This sermon addresses the pervasive fear of standing out and the resulting tendency to compromise one's convictions, drawing parallels to Peter's denial of Christ and the need for bold witness in a world increasingly hostile to the gospel. It emphasizes that fear can paralyze believers, hindering the proclamation of truth and leading to a culture of silence, while highlighting the transformative power of embracing a courageous stance, even amidst opposition, and magnifying Christ in a hurting world, ultimately urging listeners to overcome 'square peg phobia' and embrace their calling to boldly share the message of salvation.

And it is this that drives her passion today for educating others about wine in an approachable and entertaining way.  As well as working as a consultant across the wine industry and judging for awards, including co-chairing the International Wine Challenge, Sam hosts corporate and private tastings, which are often focused on her wine flavour tree.  The tree forms the basis for her debut book, The Wine Flavour Guide, which shows readers how to pick the best wine for any occasion. Listen in to find out who Sam's favourite English wine brands are, who she'd choose to share her favourite bottle of wine with and the reason she has some Veuve Clicquot branded wellies in her closet. Jason Edwards, CEO & Founder of Alternatives.pe, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. Lawyer to Founder & VC: Jason recounted his legal career at Baker & McKenzie in Australia and Hong Kong. Due to the Asian Financial Crisis, he focused on financial restructuring for distressed firms (many of whom had borrowed heavily in US dollars) across Bangkok, Singapore and Asia. He later moved into private equity with Clearwater Capital Partners ($1.2B AUM) and venture capital by co-founding Qualgro VC. He later founded alternatives.pe - an accurate data and insights platform for private capital market professionals looking for best-in-class coverage across Southeast Asia and Australia. The platform is now used by the majority of Asian funds including Square Peg, 500, Temasek, Sequoia, Tiger Global, Warburg Pincus, KKR, Vertex, GIC and Softbank. 2. Alternatives.pe Regional Capital Insights: Jason discussed the current shift of VC attention from consumer-focused (B2C) to business-focused (B2B) models, due to a faster route to profitability across diverse linguistic and cultural markets. He observed strengthening investment discipline focused on capital efficiency and strategic scalability.  Jason also elaborated on the complex dynamics of negotiation and asset recovery in the region. He pointed out that Asian businesses usually hold most of their value intrinsically, which complicates asset recovery efforts when entrepreneurs have been at the helm for extensive periods, sometimes spanning decades or generations. He emphasized that a successful recovery strategy involves not just enforcing rights as per the norm in Western jurisdictions, but also cooperating with the original business operators to maximize value extraction. This nuanced approach highlights the importance of balancing 'stick' enforcement strategies with engagement and collaboration, underscoring that aggressive takeover tactics are seldom the best route to preserving or enhancing a business's value in Asia. 3. January Capital Venture Debt Strategy: Jason explained the rationale and timing for launching January Capital's venture debt services to fill the regional market gap. He detailed the methodical structure of their venture debt deals, typically around $15 million, targeted at growth-stage companies that find traditional venture capital or equity financing too dilutive or misaligned with their financial strategies. He elaborated on how this approach is particularly opportune given the current high-interest rate environment and lower valuations, which would allow venture debt to provide capital without excessive equity sacrifices. Jeremy and Jason also talked about his personal experience of the Asian Financial Crisis and ensuing layoffs, the importance of accurate and timely data for VC dealmaking, and personal reflections on entrepreneurial risk-taking. Autism Identification Should Come with a Warning Label (Including Autistic Burnout)   There are things that happen to most autistic people once they identify as autistic, and there should be a warning label! If you're late diagnosed, and high masking, there's a good chance you are, or will be in autistic burnout. There's also skill regression, and not being able to push through anymore. This can be confusing and distressing. I bring you up to date on my health journey, and where I'm at with autistic burnout, and I provide a few resources.   HIGHLIGHTS Summary In this episode, Patricia provides a personal update on her health and discusses the challenges of identifying as autistic. She shares her experiences with navigating the healthcare system and dealing with health issues such as vestibular neuritis. Patricia also explores the impact of autistic burnout and trauma, as well as the need for positive male archetypes in her life. She discusses the lack of reciprocity in relationships and the importance of self-compassion and rest. Patricia concludes by encouraging listeners to embrace all parts of themselves and share the podcast with others. Autistic Burnout Autistic burnout is a phenomenon experienced by many individuals, characterized by extreme exhaustion, mental fatigue, and sensory overload. It often results from prolonged periods of masking, camouflaging, and trying to fit into neurotypical expectations, leading to a depletion of cognitive and emotional resources. Autistic burnout can manifest as difficulty in functioning, heightened sensory sensitivities, emotional meltdowns, and a sense of overwhelm. Recognizing the signs of autistic burnout is crucial for individuals to prioritize self-care, seek support, and make necessary adjustments to prevent further exhaustion. Strategies to manage autistic burnout may include setting boundaries, practicing sensory regulation techniques, engaging in self-soothing activities, and seeking therapy or counseling. Creating a supportive environment that accommodates sensory needs, communication preferences, and individual differences can help prevent and alleviate autistic burnout. Educating employers, educators, and healthcare providers about autistic burnout can lead to more inclusive and accommodating environments for autistic individuals. Understanding one's neurodivergent traits can help individuals recognize their limits, advocate for their needs, and navigate challenges related to autistic burnout. Building a support network of understanding friends, family members, therapists, and fellow neurodivergent individuals can provide emotional support and validation during periods of autistic burnout. Benefits of having an autism diagnosis (either self-diagnosis or formal diagnosis) for myself Self-identification and diagnosis in the autistic community are helpful in understanding one's unique neurodivergent traits and needs. It helps individuals access appropriate support, accommodations, and resources tailored to their specific differences and strengths. Self-identification empowers individuals to embrace their identity and connect with a supportive community of like-minded individuals. Diagnosis provides validation and a sense of relief for many individuals who have long struggled with feeling different or misunderstood. Understanding one's autism can lead to better self-awareness and self-acceptance, promoting mental well-being and confidence. It allows individuals to advocate for themselves in various settings, such as education, employment, and healthcare, ensuring their needs are met. Diagnosis can help individuals navigate social interactions, sensory sensitivities, and other aspects of daily life more effectively. Early diagnosis in children can lead to early intervention and support, improving long-term outcomes and quality of life. It helps dispel misconceptions and stigma surrounding autism, promoting acceptance and inclusion in society. Self-identification and diagnosis contribute to a more accurate representation of the diverse autistic community, highlighting the spectrum of experiences and challenges individuals may face.   Takeaways   Identifying as autistic can come with challenges and a range of emotions, including anger, grief, and frustration. Navigating the healthcare system can be difficult, especially when seeking a diagnosis or specialized care. Autistic burnout is a real phenomenon that can lead to skill regression and a decreased ability to function. Self-compassion and rest are essential for managing autistic burnout and maintaining overall well-being.   Chapters (please adjust for the addition of the introduction)   00:00 Introduction and Personal Update 01:15 The Challenges of Identifying as Autistic 02:08 Struggling with Health Issues 03:32 Navigating the Healthcare System 04:36 The Impact of Vestibular Neuritis 05:59 Autistic Burnout and Trauma 07:15 Grief and Anger in the Autism Journey 08:31 Childhood Experiences and Identity 09:50 The Need for Male Archetypes 11:19 Seeking Support and Advocacy 12:42 The Lack of Reciprocity in Relationships 13:54 Navigating Small World and Limited Energy 15:14 Accepting Where You Are 16:33 The Impact of Autism Diagnosis 17:54 The Complexity of Autism Presentation 19:46 The Validity of Self-Diagnosis 20:21 The Illusion of Neurotypical Functioning 21:31 Embracing Autism as a Disability 22:35 Understanding Autistic Burnout 23:46 The Impact of Medical Appointments 25:17 The Harsh Inner Critic and Self-Compassion 26:12 Fear of Not Functioning 27:05 The Lack of Recognition for Autistic Experiences 28:11 Observing Reciprocity in Relationships 29:07 The Importance of Rest and Self-Care 30:00 The Impact of Autistic Burnout on Work 31:06 Embracing All Parts of Yourself 32:20 Conclusion and Call to Share the Podcast Additional Takeaways Seek consent and ask for permission before sharing personal reactions or opinions in conversations. Abbey's middle school Bible teacher was a square peg. An introverted goth, artist, musician, and long-term Christian school educator. He never followed the “normal” path in life, which made him an outsider in his own religious community. Abbey gets the dish on how he landed in this conservative environment, and how he survived it. And she asks an important question: “Was I your most annoying student?”

Cush Jumbo is the award-winning actor known for her roles on the stage and screen, from The Good Fight to Macbeth. She joins Clare McDonnell to discuss starring in - and executive producing – the new crime thriller series Criminal Record. Cush stars as DS June Lenker, a police detective locked in a confrontation with an older detective, played by Peter Capaldi, over a historic murder conviction. For the first time, Royal Mail has dedicated set of stamps to a female pop group, to commemorate 30 years since the Spice Girls formed in 1994. Lauren Bravo, a culture journalist and author and DJ Yinka Bokinni joined Emma to talk about it.Last week on Woman's Hour we heard the candid admission by the former Labour MP and Government Minister, Dame Joan Ruddock that she was ready to end her terminally ill husband's life using a pillow in a bid to end his pain. Her husband the former MP Frank Doran had been suffering from end stage bowel cancer in 2017, and she struggled to get him pain relief medication in the hours before he died. She is now calling for a free vote in the Commons to legalise assisted dying. The public debate around the subject has been revived in recent months by leading figures such as Esther Rantzen - who revealed that she is considering travelling to a Dignitas clinic in Switzerland if her cancer worsens. But others such as Baroness Ilora Finlay, a cross bench peer in the House of Lords and a palliative end of life care expert, are cautioning against a law change. She believes improved access to care and pain relief is the answer when people are dying rather than the taking of lethal drugs. She joins Clare McDonnell to reflect on the new push for a law change.Shere Hite - a name many people will remember, but some may not know. She was a pioneering feminist sex researcher who published her ground-breaking book, The Hite Report: A National Study of Female Sexuality in 1976. The book was seen by many as radical, changing prevailing notions about female sexuality. Shere went on to write and publish several more books, but endured intense and lasting criticism in the US, and eventually moved to Europe and renounced her American citizenship in 1995. She died in 2020. Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated Director, Nicole Newnham felt that despite how influential Shere had been in life, that she has since been forgotten. So Nicole produced the documentary, The Disappearance of Shere Hite, which is released in UK cinemas on January 12th. She joins Krupa to discuss it. As the number of pupils missing a significant amount of their education is about double the level it was before the pandemic, Clare is joined by Ellie Costello, the executive director of Square Peg, a not-for-profit which helps families that struggle with school attendance.

Our guest this week is James Bowe, the Co-Founder of OwnHome alongside Tim Harley. With shelter as a fundamental human need, OwnHome aims to transform access to homeownership in Australia, allowing aspirational homeowners to enter the property market without a 20% deposit, helping them get there for just 2% upfront.    With enviable and impressive resumes and backgrounds across consulting and consumer tech with the likes of Bain & Company, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Macquarie, Wise Ltd, and Herbert Smith Freehills between them, James and Tim were driven to start OwnHome after reflecting on some of the biggest challenges they personally face (financial security being at the top of the pile) and how they want to spend the brief period of time they have left on this planet.    After participating in Commonwealth Bank's accelerator program from overseas, working their day jobs during UK day time and the accelerator program from 10pm - 4am, they finished in the top spot for the accelerator and received $150,000 funding. Now armed with little to no excuses to jump into OwnHome full time, the pair returned to Australia, and raised their seed round while in hotel quarantine in Sydney. Own Home has since received backing from Entrez, Global Founders Capital, Square Peg, and Commonwealth Bank's X15 Ventures and recently raised $31 million in their series A round.    OwnHome combines technology and human services for a seamless experience. Through OwnHome, aspiring homeowners can wave goodbye to renting forever and forgo intergenerational support as the only avenue to owning a home. Their offer allows those with just 2% deposit on the home value access to a licensed buyer's agent, split loan structures, choice of home loan and comprehensive support through the process. Over the past two and a half years, they have received well over 20,000 applications and supported 50 families in becoming homeowners. Across the next 12 months, OwnHome aspired to support $500 million of property purchases in the next 12 months.    Quickfire Round  Book: Amp It Up!, Frank Slootman & Black Belt, Joseph HealyPodcast: All-In Newsource: The Economist, Twitter App: Twitter Productivity Tool: Siri CEO: Jeff BezosTV Show: SuccessionTEDTalk Topic: Solving the challenges of housing affordability in Australia  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
