"Take Five and Breathe" is a dharma talk on the unique timing signature of life. We want life to be in 4/4 time, but life is a jazz musician, and will throw in 5/4 time whenever it gets the urge. Luckily the Buddha taught us to flow with whatever quirky timing life threw at us. This talk invokes everything from Dave Brubeck to Sleep Token, from Tron Legacy to The Little John Beecher Orchestra and more, all in the name of helping us handle the vicissitudes of life a little better. The great Afro-American poet Langston Hughes was a pioneer in Jazz Poetry, so it is appropriate that managed to finish this piece for International Jazz Day and the last day of National Poetry Month:  a performance of a short poem of his about Jazz, "Cabaret." The Parlando Project combines various words (mostly literary poetry) with original music in differing styles. Alexandra (Alex) Ridout is a young jazz trumpeter from the UK, now residing in New York City. In this episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, she lays out her journey as a musician, comparing the experiences and educational backgrounds between the UK and the US. Ridout recalls her time at the Royal Academy of Music in London and Manhattan School of Music, emphasizing her family's influence, especially her jazz musician parents. Highlighting her musical achievements, the conversation includes her participation and victory in the BBC Youth Competition, winning at 17 years old. She talks about her association with renowned musicians and mentors, including trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, now Dean of Jazz Arts at the Manhattan School of Music, and her involvement with the all-female group, Artemis. As with many women in the jazz industry, the topic of women's growing strength emerges. She also addresses the challenges and realities of the recording industry today, stressing the importance of patience and genuine passion in pursuing a music career. The conversation culminates with her upcoming performance on International Jazz Day and a surprise familial discovery. Alexandra Ridout generously allowed me to record portions of the show she and her quintet performed at their concert, hosted by A Tribe for Jazz as part of their 2024 International Jazz Series for International Jazz Day. This episode provides two tracks from the show and one from her Remote Duets EP that can be found at Bandcamp.com. Lee Morgan was many things: a brilliant trumpeter, a hard-bop messenger, a cultural hero, a cautionary tale. He was also a proud product of Philly, and in recent days and weeks we've seen the city truly herald him as its own. On April 30, International Jazz Day, a historical marker in Morgan's honor was unveiled at the corner of 52nd and Chancellor Streets — former site of the Aqua Lounge, where he played his final hometown gig. We were there for the ceremony so we could bring you this report, including remarks from saxophonist Billy Harper, who played in Lee's last band, and his nephew Raymond Darryl Cox, who came bearing the master's flugelhorn. He has presented jazz workshops, teacher-training seminars, and jazz "informances" worldwide with such renowned artists as Ambrose Akinmusire, Don Braden, Bobby Broom, Dave Brubeck, Gerald Clayton, Robin Eubanks, Herbie Hancock, Antonio Hart, Ingrid Jensen, Sean Jones, Delfeayo Marsalis, Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, and Steve Wilson.Prior to his current position at the Hancock Institute, Dyas served as Executive Director of the Brubeck Institute where he implemented its College Fellowship Program, Brubeck Festival, Summer Jazz Colony, and Jazz Outreach Initiative. Before that, he served as Director of Jazz Studies at Miami-Dade College – one of the nation's largest and most multi-cultural colleges, and New World School of the Arts – Miami's award-winning performing arts high school.Throughout his career, Dyas has performed across the country, designed and implemented new jazz curricula, directed large and small ensembles, and taught various jazz courses to students at virtually every level of musical development – age seven to seventy, beginner to professional, learning-challenged to prodigy. He has conducted jazz and tune-learning clinics, adjudicated high school and collegiate jazz festivals, and presented numerous jazz seminars throughout the United States and in Australia, Canada, Columbia, Cuba, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Russia, and Turkey. He also teaches Jazz Pedagogy at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is on the faculty of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, and serves as an adjudicator for the Annual GRAMMY Music Educator Award.Additionally, Dyas has written for DownBeat magazine and other national music publications, presented clinics, and performed at a number of International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) and Jazz Education Network (JEN) Annual Conferences, co-founded the International Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Competition, served on the Smithsonian Institution's Task Force for Jazz Education in America, and contributed the chapter “Defining Jazz Education” to the biography, "David Baker - A Legacy in Music." She's a published author, painter, Le Cordon Bleu graduate, and cookbook author. Currently, she's the Founder/CEO of Issei, a food innovation company that launched Issei Mochi Gummies exclusively with Whole Foods Market in the U.S., quickly selling out in multiple stores. Issei represents the heritage of first-generation Japanese immigrants and aims for significant growth with new product lines in development.
