And so we're back from outer space (or wherever it is Indieventure hosts like to go on holiday). Yep, after our little recording hiatus – seamlessly covered for with pre-recorded Pokémon chat, bet you didn't even notice that was a weird one – your intrepid trio is back together for the first time in a month, and naturally we all have one question on our minds: what have we all been playing while we were apart? Of course, two-thirds of the group were on dream holidays and thus didn't play a whole lot, but there's still plenty to talk about, between all the cool indies that launched in April/May and all the awesome games that have been sitting in our backlogs waiting for exactly this kind of downtime! So Rebecca (who is the only one who hadn't been on her holidays yet at the time of recording) dusted off some intriguing older one-shot indies in the form of 2:22AM and Babette, as well as falling down the Forbidden Solitaire rabbit hole. Rachel made the most of about one week with her PC, also playing Forbidden Solitaire as well as Wax Heads, Phonopolis, and a frankly unbelievable amount of other games given the short time she was home. Liam has only really played one indie game all month, but since it's Mina the Hollower he's certainly not short of opinions to share with the group. We end as ever on our latest round of hyperfixations, and Rachel currently thinks there's nothing better in this world than a sweet little TikTok remix about a cat named Serafino (and she's probably right!). Liam proves that South Korea is still completely dominating the Netflix original programming market with Culinary Class Wars, a cooking competition made extra special by the contrasting personalities of the two hosts. And Rebecca is finally ready to talk about The Saint of Steel series by T Kingfisher, the series singlehandedly responsible for turning her opinion of romantasy on its head. This week's Story Quest takes us into space! Living on the colony planet Calder Minor, Orin Hale struggles with the "loud" silence of being alone until he is gifted an old deck of solitaire cards. At four critical moments, specific cards seem to "help" him find his voice, courage, and way home. Orin eventually realizes that the cards are a reminder that even when playing a game by himself, he is never truly alone.
Join us as we do another Take It or Leave It episode, this time comparing the tracklists of From a Page (remastered) and Fly from Here (2011), the album that could've come out in 2011 and the album that did come out in 2011. We will each share what we prefer between the different versions of tracks that are on both, and we will also state our preferences in track match-ups as we list them side by side. It's a bit trickier this time, but here are the match-ups:“To the Moment” vs “Overture” & “We Can Fly”“The Man You Always Wanted Me to Be (Alternate)” & “From the Turn of the Card” vs “Sad Night at the Airfield”“Into the Storm (Alternate)” vs “Madman at the Screens”“Aliens” vs “Bumpy Ride” & “We Can Fly Reprise”“Hour of Need (Alternate)” vs “The Man You Always Wanted Me to Be”“Words on a Page” vs “Life on a Film Set” & “Hour of Need”“The Gift of Love” vs “Solitaire” & “Into the Storm”
What's actually going on?We dig into Cozy Florist by Rift Sky Games — the Western counterpart to "My Garden Tale," which is already doing $10M/month in China. The game is a remarkably polished Farmville without the annoying resource puzzle, with stacked cores including flower-merging mechanics, Solitaire-association customer orders, gacha-style flower rarities, social raids, and TikTok Live integration baked into the metagame. But the puzzle is the creative volume. 4,000 ads in 30 days is Forex-scale UA output. In this insightful discussion on leadership and employee development episode, Stop Losing Your Best Employees Now, Tim Staton and Sharyn Abbott explore how growing smarter—not just working harder—drives unstoppable success for individuals, teams, and organizations. Sharyn Abbott, a seasoned speaker, author, and founder of Ultimate Business International with over 30 years of experience training entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 teams, shares proven strategies for developing executives and fostering sustainable growth. Drawing from her personal journey overcoming stuttering, dyslexia, and a challenging family background marked by abuse, Sharyn learned to deeply understand human behavior. Her 20+ years in the printing industry, including sales roles with companies like Hewlett Packard and Varian, gave her a front-row seat to observe diverse management styles and their real-world impact on employee engagement. Examples of Impersonal Leadership Styles and Their Consequences Sharyn highlights how modern leadership has increasingly become impersonal, contrasting it with heart-centered approaches backed by Institute of HeartMath studies showing greater profitability, productivity, and employee retention. Impersonal leadership examples include a manager threatening an employee's job over a family Thanksgiving trip or the mass layoffs during the 2008 downturn, which eroded loyalty and left workers feeling disposable—prompting many to seek more appreciative environments, such as Tesla opportunities in Texas. These impersonal leadership styles destroy trust, fuel disengagement (as seen in the Cisco example where 21 employees played Solitaire at 9:30 AM), and create high turnover. Benefits of Flexible Talent Programs for Employee Engagement To counter these issues, Sharyn strongly advocates for flexible talent programs that invest in people from day one. By matching employees to roles aligned with their unique personalities and learning styles—whether kinetic, visual, or auditory—companies can boost excitement, productivity, and long-term commitment. This tailored approach, far superior to rigid training manuals, significantly reduces turnover costs and builds a more engaged workforce. Delegation and Addressing Conflict: Building and Eroding Trust A core theme is building and eroding trust through effective delegation and addressing conflict. Ownership issues often prevent delegation, as managers claim credit for team ideas, breeding resentment and an “us vs. them” culture between departments. Sharyn recommends open-door meetings, leveraging natural team leaders, and clearly explaining the “why” behind decisions to resolve issues like mandatory overtime. Her personal philosophy—starting with 100% trust and allowing it to adjust based on actions—encourages leaders to avoid carrying past baggage into new relationships. Evolving Leadership & Ethics with Sharyn Abbott's “Growing into Leadership” Sharyn introduces her book Growing into Leadership, which guides the transition from entrepreneurship to corporate roles while emphasizing evolving leadership & ethics. The focus is on instilling trust and respect without fear, helping managers bring others up through the ranks by recognizing individual strengths and avoiding authoritarian pitfalls. Self-Care for Leaders: Essential for Sustainable Success Finally, a critical message for busy executives is self-care for leaders. PRP 007 Mini-Broadcast: Episode 9– Live and Let Die (With Robbie Sims) Since the beginning of the show, Brian has done his best to strong-arm discussion of Agent 007 into as many podcasts as he could. Finally he convinced Sarah to embark on a new mission: the Permanent Record Podcast 007 Mini-Broadcast! This occasional series from your friends Brian & Sarah started with "Dr. No" and will work its way up to the most recent Bond adventure, and on the way, it will discuss and critique all of the 007 theme songs and other relevant recordings. It's a dream come true for one of the hosts - and for Bond fans everywhere! Speaking of Bond fans everywhere, they will no doubt be delighted to learn that Robbie Sims, author of the delightful book Quantum of Silliness: The Peculiar World of Bond, James Bond, can once again be found co-hosting this installment with Brian and Sarah. Episode 9 in the series brings us up to the 1973 film Live and Let Die. It's Roger Moore's first appearance as the MI6 agent, and it's also the first Bond movie to feature a rock song for the theme. The song was written by Paul and Linda McCartney, performed by Paul and his band Wings, and produced by George Martin. George Martin also ended up providing the score for the film. Our three hosts discuss how Paul McCartney and George Martin became a part of the 007 universe as well as what led erstwhile Bond composer John Barry to be uninvolved with the franchise's eighth film. The trio talk about the chart success of the theme song as well as the other awards and accolades it received. George Martin's score is discussed, with some speculation over how John Barry would have done with the score for this film that covers some different thematic territory than other Bond movies. While discussing the movie, Robbie, Brian, and Sarah also talk about the fact that the theme song is performed in the film, and Brian has an impromptu trivia session with Robbie and Sarah about Bond theme songs being heard during other Bond movies. And of course, each host reveals where "Live and Let Dies" falls in their personal ranking of Bond themes. There's talk about the current state of affairs in the Bond universe, and Robbie is put to the test again with a series of Bond trivia questions. And Brian and Sarah talk about their encounter with Solitaire! It's an episode full of excitement, fun, and laughs that you won't want to miss! The Big Year Podcast April 1, 2026 It is April 1, 2026, I'm Robert Baumander and welcome to season 4 of The Big Year Podcast. My 4th season? Really? So glad to be back again. Miss me? It's been an exciting journey and this season promises to be the best ever. Maybe. Or not. I'll let you be the judge, when it's all said and done, but boy am I looking forward to some of the guests I've already lined up. In addition to Big Year birders, you'll get to hear from a real live astronaut, who is involved in bird conservation and a paleontologist who will educate us on which of the dinosaurs that survived the great meteor impact became the birds we know and love today. Last time you heard my voice, I was settling in for winter, and beginning work on my book, The Trans-Canada Jay Highway. I was planning to stay local for the winter, focus my ADHD brain on just writing, and this podcast, but word of an amazing rarity in Montreal Quebec hit the birding world in January. It was a very unlikely visitor from across the pond, a European Robin. Wowzers. That was a bird I wanted to see. I waited a few days; one, to make sure it was sticking around and more importantly, for a good weather forecast that wouldn't have me driving through a blizzard or looking for the bird in minus 40 temperatures. After a seven hour drive, including a slow trek through Montreal construction traffic in the rain, I arrived at a quiet, snow covered neighborhood, to find a small group of excited birders who had just found the robin. Everyone in the neighborhood was welcoming to all of us who came to see their celebrity bird, including one woman who was putting seed out for the weary traveller. When another birder showed up shortly after I arrived we both looked at each other, with the merest glimmer of recognition, but couldn't quite place from where. It was Josh Gant who figured it out. Josh was a guest on this very podcast, talking about his New Jersey state Big Year. He also drove 7 hours to get to Montreal. We arrived within minutes of each other and got to celebrate this amazing once in a lifetime bird, together and with other birders who had made the trek to Montreal. None of us, however, had travelled as far as the European Robin. European Robins are not related in any way to our American Robins. European Robins, I discovered, are in the Old World Flycatcher family and American Robins are thrushes. Our robin's name was given only because of their similar red breast. Many birds that are known as robins also sport this feature. A better name for our robin would be Red-breasted Thrush. So, the European Robin is not a thrush and the American Robin is a thrush. And don't get me started on all the other “robins”. Moving on. Today is not just an exciting day for bird lovers, and lovers of birding podcasts, but also space exploration. Artemis II is on the launchpad, with four astronauts, including Canadian Jeremy Hansen, and is scheduled to blast off at 6:24pm this April 1. As someone who is old enough to have watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon and is nerdy enough to build NASA Lego sets, including the Artemis, this is an exciting day. As for this episode, my guest is Josh van der Meulen. You might know him, might have birded with him, but may not know his Big Year story. If you remember back to last season,(and if not, why not? I urge you to go back and take listen), I spent an hour or so talking to Andrew Keaveny. Back in 2012, Andrew and Josh were doing Ontario Big Years. I was a birdy-eyed beginner doing an ABA Big Year. I relied on both of them to help me find birds when I was birding in Ontario, while they competed for Ontario Big Year supremacy. I likened their competition to that of Kenn Kaufman and Floyd Murdoch's 1973 Big Years. Though it was a competition, Andrew and Josh kept things civil between them and even birded together and helped each other along the way. I was on the scene when Andrew missed the Townsend's Solitaire and found the only Red Knot of my Big Year, thanks to Josh. 14 years later, both of them are good birding buddies, who I'm always glad to run into, usually when stalking a rare bird. So, now that we're all caught up, let's once again travel back in time to 2012, which seems to be the nexus of modern Big Year birding, and get on with the show.

We start with childhood TV, back when watching a show meant knowing exactly what time it came on and being in front of the television when it did. If you missed it, your only option was to hear about it later from someone who might get the details wrong. Families built evenings around what was airing, using the TV schedule as a kind of household clock. From there, we get into medication commercials, where everything begins with a cheerful scene and ends with a list that takes a hard turn. You’ll hear about dry mouth and dizziness in the same breath as something that sounds like it requires immediate attention. The delivery never changes, which makes the contrast between the smiling people and the list even harder to ignore. That leads into sleep machines, which are supposed to help by playing sounds like rain or waves. The idea is simple until you realize you’re lying there paying close attention to whether this particular version of rain sounds right. Instead of falling asleep, you’re evaluating the loop and wondering why the ocean seems to repeat every few seconds. We then move to solitaire, where every move feels important right up until you run out of options and realize the deck had other plans. That small-scale decision-making sits next to Dwarf Fortress, where every action connects to several others and the system keeps track of all of it. One has you flipping cards and hoping for a red six; the other has you managing layers of outcomes that build on each other. We also get into actors’ heights and how they’re adjusted on screen, especially in portrayals of dwarves, where camera angles and positioning do most of the work. Across TV schedules, side effect lists, looping rain sounds, card stacks, and dense game systems, we keep running into the same situation: you follow the setup, and then something in the details refuses to behave the way it’s supposed to.

Olivia joins Justin this week for a meaty follow-up to our EPiC review. Not only does she chime in with her thoughts and observations from her viewing experience, the duo also read and react to all of YOUR many wonderful emails, comments and submitted audio reviews of the film from TCBCast's Patreon supporters. Then, Song of the Week IS BACK, BABY!! Olivia, taking cues from EPiC, is feeling the "Sweet Inspiration," discussing the history behind the iconic hit recording by The Sweet Inspirations, its American Sound connections, and the time during the August 1970 engagement (narrowly missed by the TTWII film crew) that Elvis sang it to the Sweets, live on stage! Justin couldn't let the news slip by that Neil Sedaka had passed away, so he reflects on Elvis' 1976 interpretation of Neil's heartbreaking "Solitaire," and deliberates over whether Elvis' own preferred recording process by '76 may have accidentally led to a more claustrophobic final arrangement. They also consider the value of Bergen White's orchestrations and the thematic resonance Elvis may have felt with co-writer Phil Cody's lyrics. Thank you to all of our listeners for your support coming up on 400 episodes, and especially to our TCBCast patrons who wrote in to provide their insights and reactions to EPiC. This podcast episode features a detailed, hands-on review of the iOS game Dungeon Scoundrel, presented by Thomas Domville, also known as AnonyMouse. The episode focuses on exploring the game's mechanics, accessibility, and overall design, offering listeners a thorough understanding of how the game plays from start to finish. Thomas introduces Dungeon Scoundrel as a tactical, turn-based dungeon crawler card game with solitaire-style elements, designed for short but strategic play sessions that typically last around fifteen minutes.Throughout the episode, Thomas explains that the game is fully playable offline and emphasizes its strong accessibility support, including full VoiceOver compatibility. He walks listeners step by step through the interface, starting from launching the app and navigating the main menu to selecting a character class and entering the dungeon. He explains how each run consists of clearing a deck of cards that represent dungeon rooms filled with monsters, weapons, shields, potions, and special class-specific cards. Strategy is central to success, as players must decide when to fight monsters with bare hands, when to use weapons or shields, and when to save or consume healing potions.Thomas provides a narrated playthrough that demonstrates how combat works, how shields differ from weapons, how special abilities affect an entire room, and how fleeing a room can be used as a tactical option at the cost of health. He also explains the class system in detail, noting that there are seven classes in total, each with a unique spell or ability, and that new classes are unlocked by successfully completing runs with earlier ones. In this engaging conversation, Michael sits down with Colin MB Cooper to explore the intersection of human behavior, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. Colin shares how his lifelong curiosity for technology began at age 13 when he disassembled his father's computer, sparking a passion that now informs his work blending neuroscience and AI. Together, they reflect on decades of rapid technological change and the unique skillset Colin brings to understanding it. Declining Workforce Competencies in Younger Generations Michael and Colin discuss an emerging concern: the decline in critical thinking, curiosity, and creativity among young professionals entering the workforce. Drawing on Michael's experience hiring over a thousand employees and Colin's global hiring experience, they highlight a growing gap between what schools teach and what businesses require. Both note that increased reliance on LLMs may be accelerating this divide, raising important questions about the future of work and education. Technology Dependence and the Erosion of Critical Thinking The conversation turns to society's increasing dependence on technology. Michael shares stories from his early career teaching new hires basic computer skills and even using games like Solitaire to enhance productivity. They discuss how global internet outages could disrupt daily life and why fostering critical thinking and curiosity is essential in today's uncertain environment. AI's Rapid Integration and Its Impact on the Workforce Colin outlines the challenges organizations face as AI outpaces human adaptation. In education, technology is moving faster than teachers can adjust, and in the corporate world, AI-first strategies are leading to hiring freezes and the automation of repetitive work. He emphasizes a human-centered AI model that increases capability rather than replacing people. Real examples from healthcare and customer service highlight how AI can elevate human performance. Colin encourages listeners to upskill using free AI courses from providers like Google and OpenAI. AI's Transformational Potential in Healthcare Michael explores one of the most promising AI applications: healthcare. Drawing from his primary care leadership background, he discusses how clinicians spend excessive time on documentation rather than patient care. Colin agrees that AI could revolutionize healthcare workflows, lightening administrative burdens and improving patient outcomes, though both acknowledge the importance of safeguarding security and privacy. Technology Behaviors: From Customer Service Hacks to Alexa in Schools Michael shares a practical tip about selecting different language options to reduce customer service wait times, then recalls a story of students misusing Alexa devices to order products without permission. It's a humorous yet telling example of how quickly technology becomes woven into daily life. Generational Differences in Adapting to Technology To close the episode, Michael and Colin reflect on how older generations developed strong problem-solving skills due to limited access to support in their early tech experiences, while younger generations depend more heavily on constant connectivity. They discuss the vulnerability of this dependency, highlighted by the recent Cloudflare outage. Colin emphasizes that while technology will keep evolving, adaptability and resilience will determine how well society keeps pace.
