Learn how Twisted Hippo recovered from a devastating fire and found a way to thrive while brewing their unique beers. Karl and Marilee Rutherford, co-founders and owners of Twisted Hippo, share the story of their humble beginnings from a homebrewing beer kit from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, to opening a brewery. They explain how they recovered from a devastating fire in 2022, after which the Chicago craft brewery community rallied around them to help them get back on their feet, and the innovative way they found a way to maintain a physical presence at District Brew Yards. After the beer break, Karl and Marilee delve into the brewing techniques and flavor profiles of their honey-infused cream ale and award-winning Golden Lasso beer and talk about honey as an adjunct in beer. They also discuss the importance of embracing individuality in brewing and the significance of water chemistry in beer production. Plus: a whimsical look at their mascot, Pinky, and insights into balancing innovation with financial sustainability. After investing around $30,000 into a beer-making hobby, José Lopez, alongside his brother Javier, knew it was time to turn his passion into a full-fledged business. And we're so glad he did. The Hermosa native's Casa Humilde Cerveceria Artesanal has quickly become one of the most exciting spots to enjoy craft beer in town. Casa Humilde originally started in the Lopez brothers' childhood home in Chicago, but their operation has grown significantly since then. They joined District Brew Yards in 2019, and recently, they expanded to a new location in Forest Park. With the new location, Lopez has seamlessly integrated his Mexican heritage into nearly every aspect of the business, from the music and food to the beers themselves. He comes to the studio to tell us about his journey, from finding music as a kid to sourcing ingredients from Mexico for new beers at the brewery. Join us as we talk: the tricky business of making hard seltzers, the best session beers, establishing an identity amidst crowded craft beer market, and so much more.

Brad picked up these cans of Raptor Snacks from District Brew Yards and felt like it was just what they needed: a classic IPA. This beer doesn’t disappoint and is a good reminder of the tasty beer coming out of District Brew Yards all the time. As the guys crush a few cans, Nik shares a little about his recent trip to Cider Summit.Having issues listening to the audio? Try the MP3 (36.3 MB) or subscribe to the podcast on Spotify.
In this episode, we celebrated the 100th episode of "Draught Politics" at the District Brew Yards. We had a lively chat with special guest Carl Rutherford from Twisted Hippo who gave a deep-dive on the state of the beer politic world and its struggles, including the stalled direct-to-consumer laws and overall impact of the pandemic on lesser-known breweries. Our chats ranged from serious global events to the importance of supporting local breweries and creating sustainable growth within the sector.
Now somewhat relegated to an occasional fall seasonal from breweries, the Amber style is essential to the history of American craft beer as we know it. So we're pumped to see five local breweries dabble in amber ales and lagers, and we fall in love all over again (with the beers, not each other). Also, Craig has an unexpected pet, we accidentally have a moment of real beer talk about wilds and sours, Ryan vetoes an obvious 311 reference, and we are bringing our own ludicrous drinkware to the District Brew Yards until someone tells us “no.” Whoa-oh. Beers Reviewed Casa Humilde Cerveceria - Alba (Mexican-Style Amber Lager) BuckleDown Brewing - Alien Avatar (Amber Ale) Maplewood Brewing - Amberana (Amber Ale conditioned on Amburana wood) Off Color Brewing - Beer For Huddles (Amber Ale) Burnt City Brewing (?) - Titan Walls 5 (Amber Lager)
Artists from across the globe have gathered in Chicago this week for Titan Walls, the city's 5th annual mural festival. Festival goers can enjoy food and drink while watching more than a dozen artists paint murals on the walls of District Brew Yards in the West Loop. Reset talks about the ins and outs of public art with Chicago-based muralists.
Welcome to the Chicago Beer Pass: Your ticket to all the great beer events happening in and around Chicago. On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White are on location in Wheeling, Illinois at the newest District Brew Yards location. This location features five breweries and one of those is Twisted Hippo who also recently joined the Chicago location. The guys were able to catchup with Twisted Hippo's owners Marilee and Karl Rutherford on the patio during the first week of the soft launch. Recording outside comes with some traffic noise, so sorry for those audio listeners. They all spoke a bit about the fire at the brewery earlier this year as well as future plans for Twisted Hippo beyond District Brew Yards. The official opening date for the Wheeling District Brew Yards is October 28th and the space is fantastic! Brad and Nik highly recommend making the trip out to the burbs to check it out.Having issues listening to the audio? Try the MP3 (41.4MB) or subscribe to the podcast on iTunes!

Welcome to the Chicago Beer Pass: Your ticket to all the great beer events happening in and around Chicago. On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White open cans of Dreamweaver from Around The Bend Beer Co. Around The Bend is located inside District Brew Yards and Brad made a stop in this past week to pick up this Vienna Lager and chat with Dan Schedler, the Founder/Brewer of ATB. As the guys crush this Lager they chat about their adventures this past week which included trips to Whiner, Pilot Project, Goldfinger, and Afterthought. Nik was out at Goldfinger for their Dark Lager day festival and although it felt strange to be at a beer fest again it was a nice welcoming feeling. Welcome to the Chicago Beer Pass: Your ticket to all the great beer events happening in and around Chicago. On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White have Afro Beer Chick joining them. Having a few beers with people is rare during these Covid days and it’s especially nice when we can try a new offering from Around The Bend. It’s seeming like Brad and Nik have a District Brew Yards beer on most episodes lately but the fact you can try something from four different breweries in one place is a treat. As the three of them crush a couple cans, they talk about the evolution of beer events and how the digi fest is going to become a larger part of the beer scene moving forward. If you’re interested to see what a digital beer fest looks like then check out the Oak Park Microbrew Review happening this weekend.Having issues listening to the audio? They also touch on some AB news and fill in a few bits of the Finch story that they missed on the previous episode. You’ll likely see Brad or Nick picking up beer or even whiskey but both of them are still keeping it pretty low-key during the pandemic, good thing there’s plenty of great beers to drink at home.Having issues listening to the audio? Welcome to the Chicago Beer Pass: Your ticket to all the great beer events happening in and around Chicago. On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White are finding themselves back at home continuing to practice social distancing. Now that we’re moving into the holiday weekend with most of the bars and restaurants opening in Chicago and across the state, there are a lot of choices for where you can go grab a beer. For now, both Brad and Nik are going to continue picking up beer from their favorite breweries but even if the guys aren’t out drinking there are still a lot of beers getting released that are worth picking up. A beer that was released from District Brew Yards this past week was the Hibiscus IPA, where all proceeds will be donated to Chicago hospitals’ Covid-19 relief funds. Not only is it important to support your favorite brewery, it’s even better when you can also support a worthy charity. As the guys sip on their fresh pickups for the week, they chat about the event Solemn Oath is having coming up this weekend. They also discuss some of the places that have closed due to the pandemic as well as issues with staff/management. It’s never good to hear these stories from places you enjoyed but having them addressed is incredibility important in order to correct the problem. Enjoy the holiday and if you go out to drink, be sure to wear a mask whenever possible!Having issues listening to the audio? Try the MP3 (64.7 MB) or subscribe to the podcast on iTunes!
Welcome to the Chicago Beer Pass: Your ticket to all the great beer events happening in and around Chicago. On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White continue following the rules and shelter-in-place. But just because you might be staying locked away doesn’t mean everyone is and doesn’t mean there still isn’t a lot happening in the Chicago beer world. To give the guys an update on what’s happening with them and District Brew Yards is the husband and wife behind Bold Dog Beer Co. The two of them have had a wild year with District Brew Yards opening, having a baby, brewing with Sam Adams and now being forced to deal with these strange times we have entered into. It’s nice to hear that they are still brewing at District Brew Yards and currently selling a lot of beer from the brewery as well.If you are leaving your home for supplies, please be sure to support your local breweries as well. Most of them are doing delivery and payment on the internet.Having issues listening to the audio? Try the MP3 (42.5 MB) or subscribe to the podcast on iTunes!
It was a hell of a week in politics and EJ and Steve are here to give you the rundown from the District Brew Yards. This week Warren got to enjoy her favorite hobby, eviscerating rich guys from Wall Street. Meanwhile Trump decided to pardon a few of his buddies including our very own Rod “It's F**king Golden” Blagojevic.

Smoked Meats and Beer Talk. You can't really beat that. With 40 taps to choose from, DYB is a sweet little spot to have a beer and kick it. I got to sit down with the owners of all 4 breweries that dwell within DYB. Its a long one but damn was it entertaining. We got technical, we got comical, we sang, we drank, but more importantly, we learned how and why they started this whole thing.
The Fall season brings Fall beers. It also marks the return of the "Chi Beer Guy" Brady Potts as Pooch's guest co-host on the program. Highlights include: * A Seinfeld Oktoberfest - Pooch takes you along for the ride as he celebrates at The Open Bottle in Tinley Park, IL * What's Hoppin? - Utah's ABV limit gets a bump, World Series double fisting fame, and the District Brew Yards add a fourth * Pints Up? Pints Down? - The guys give their thoughts on a quartet of beers, including a couple from the Tavour delivery service (Southern Tier's Cold Press Coffee Pumking, Left Hand's White Russian Nitro, Adroit Theory's Fiend Without A Face, & Anchorage's Expel). Which ones were treats and which ones were tricks? * 99 Bottles - The guys discuss the growing trend of TV networks pulling some of their most popular properties from the big streaming platforms (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.) in favor of exclusivity on their own individual streaming apps. What could it mean for our pockets? * Here's To You! - In a segment typically reserved for industry folk, Pooch makes an exception to celebrate his cousin as he tries to hunt down craft beer at his wedding. Stout season is upon us and FOBAB is in the air! As the temperatures begin to drop, the ABV's only go up from here. Please stay sufficiently hydrated and make sure your bellies are full BEFORE consuming this episode. CHEERS!
In a very special season finale, Lindsey and Stephanie sat down with the crew from District Brew Yards for Drunk & Uncultured's first ever interview episode. Without revealing much, we covered everything from where the idea for District Brew Yards came from to stories about trips and meeting soap opera stars. A very big thank you goes out to Dan from Around the Bend Beer Co., Ben and John from Burnt City Brewing, and Jerome and Shari (they spent their 2 year wedding anniversary with us!!) from Bold Dog Beer Company for sitting down with us. Another thank you goes out to Lacey for setting this up with us!
It's April, fools! Spring has sprung! During 'What's Hoppin?' we learn about District Brew Yards and the Dixie Highway Brewery Trail. For 'A Guy Walks Into A Bar' we welcome Loyola University's Allen Green to the program as our special guest co-host. In our 'Pints Up? Pints Down?' segment the gang reviews beers from Revolution, Hop Butcher, Open Outcry, and Breckenridge. The taste testing continues into the triumphant return of '99 Bottles' where the team tees off on some of their pet peeves. And in a double dose of 'Here's To You!' we interview the finalists of our 2019 AWD "Craft Madness" Tournament, Clint Bautz of Lake Effect Brewing (runner-up) & Vince Turrise of MyGrain Brewing (champion). Now sit back and drink it all in. CHEERS!
