In this gloriously unprofessional episode, the Bros and special guest Ty Rambo attempt a blind tasting showdown between high-end and low-end whiskeys — and chaos absolutely ensues. Featuring pours from Pappy Van Winkle, Old St. Nick, Booker's, E.H. Taylor, Buffalo Trace, Early Times, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond, and Longbranch — the night spirals into intense debates about tasting notes, trash talking, philosophical reflections on drinking culture, and the official coronation of our audience as The Unprofessionals. Some whiskeys soared, some legends crumbled... and at some point, microplastic cleanse theories and heated debates over driveway weeds somehow entered the chat. If you've ever wondered whether taste, price, and reputation actually matter—or if you just want to hear grown men nearly come to blows over cinnamon notes—this is your episode. Dead bottles everywhere. Reputations nowhere to be found. “Take the next step, whatever that might be.” Fr. Mario Amore joins Men of the Hearts hosts Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Mabee to talk about his journey to the priesthood. His path was full of twists and turns, with stops in altar service and music ministry. After applying to Sacred Heart Major Seminary and subsequently delaying enrollment for two years, Fr. Mario finally took “the next step” to answer God's call. (0:26) Hosts Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Mabee introduce their guest this month, Father Mario Amore, Director of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship for the Archdiocese of Detroit who also serves as a priest in solidum for the Resurget Cineribus Family of Parishes, which includes St. Aloysius, Old St. Mary's, and the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Fr. Amore reflects on his last few months, including Christmas and the annual SEEK conference. (6:55) Fr. Mario is no stranger to podcasts, having previously hosted the Archdiocese of Detroit's I AM HERE podcast in support of the National Eucharistic Revival. Our hosts join Fr. Mario in a discussion about some of the beautiful stories shared through that effort. Fr. Mario also shares his experience hosting the Certifiably Catholic podcast alongside Mary Wilkerson and Mike Chamberland, current hosts of Archbishop Vigneron's Eyes on Jesus podcast.(12:25) Fr. Drew and Fr. Craig reflect on their last few months. Fr. Drew has been “learning the lay of the land” at his assignment in Novi and recently had dinner with his brother and a longtime friend. Meanwhile, Fr. Craig has been encouraged by increasing attendance at Sacred Heart Major Seminary's recent Discernment Weekends. The group also talks about the significance of altar serving to encourage vocations to the priesthood.(20:12) Fr. Mario shares his vocation story. He attended Catholic school as a child and attended Mass every Saturday evening with his family, “doing whatever I had to do to embarrass [my parents].” Still, he remembers his maternal grandfather predicting that he would become a priest one day. He started serving the parish as an altar server before taking a detour into music ministry as a teenager. Ultimately, his interest in theology led him to explore taking classes at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, which he calls his “first foot in the door” of discerning the priesthood. (33:11) Fr. Mario recalls attending a discernment weekend at Sacred Heart. He was already familiar with the academic experience of the seminary, having taken classes since high school, but his discernment weekend affirmed for him that he could find joy in the brotherhood and community of Sacred Heart. After working in a parish for two more years, Fr. Mario finally decided to apply to become a seminarian—but waited and discerned another two years before officially entering the seminary.(44:53) Fr. Mario talks about his time as a seminarian at Sacred Heart, his ordination in 2015, and celebrating his first Mass at St. Pius X in Southgate on the anniversary of his baptism at the same church. He also touches on what it's like to serve both as a parish priest and Detroit as Director of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship for the Archdiocese of Detroit. He then offers his advice to men considering the priesthood: “Take the next step, whatever that might be.” The episode concludes with a prayer and blessing.

Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt explore the treatment of time and place in Here, a 2024 drama film depicting the events of a single spot of land over time. They discuss how this unique perspective, and the non-chronological order in which events are shown, mirrors the omniscience of God, who is similarly outside time. They also consider the passage of time in real life, and the significance of nostalgia and memory in the Christian life. (0:28) Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt open the episode by discussing some of the movies they've seen recently, including Whiplash (2014), Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024), and Didi (2024). Then, they introduce the movie being covered in this episode: Here, a 2024 drama film depicting the events of a single spot of land over time. (6:48) Our hosts discuss the unique format of Here, which is shot from a single, fixed camera angle to show a single spot throughout time, from when dinosaurs roamed the area to the present day. The stories are shown in non-chronological order, allowing the viewer to identify parallels between different experiences in this spot over time. Fr. Brian provides the example of the film's depiction of the Spanish flu alongside the COVID-19 pandemic.(13:42) Fr. Brian talks about one of the main storylines in the film, the lives of a couple played by Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The hosts also discuss how the plot's focus on time echoes the way time contributes to conflict in classical Greek tragedies. Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt then discuss the significance of sacred time and sacred places. (19:02) Fr. Matt talks about the idea of time passing and changes taking place at his parish, Our Lady of the Rosary on Woodward Avenue in Detroit near Wayne State University. While the parish's ministry today is mostly focused on campus ministry, around 100 years ago the pastor was known to ride his white horse to parishioners' homes for sick calls. Similarly, while Old St. Mary Church is located in a neighborhood called Greektown, its stained glass windows feature the names of German donors who lived there when it was predominately a German neighborhood. Our hosts then talk about how the perspective of the movie—a single camera angle viewing events over time—mirrors the omniscience of God, who is outside time.(25:02) Fr. Brian mentions that the director of Here, Robert Zemeckis, has notably worked on a number of other movies that deal with the passage of time, including Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and Cast Away. The hosts then turn to the topic of nostalgia and memory in the Christian life, and how the climax of the film shows us that it's in the ability to remember that we see things from different perspectives. (33:40) Fr. Matt and Fr. Brian share some of their critiques of the movie, most notably the aging and “de-aging” technology used to alter the actors' appearances. They then rank the film using their “seeds of the word” rating, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story. Before concluding the episode, Fr. Matt invites listeners to send in their feedback—including which movies they'd like to see covered next—to cinema@aod.org.

What books do you recommend for someone who is really just beginning to learn and understand the Catholic faith? I don't feel comfortable receiving from Eucharistic Ministers. Is it wrong to avoid that line? How can Catholics best avoid "conforming to the world?" Can you please explain why the church permitted cremation, and why it's important for Catholics to not cremate and to preserve the physical body at the time of death? Is veiling a devotion or a requirement for women attending the traditional Mass? I have read that if one doesn't veil, she is NOT sinning - is this correct? Did the Blessed Virgin Mary have any brothers or sisters? Would St. Joseph have shown physical signs of affection for Our Lady such as hugs or kisses? Can you explain why I might feel more spiritually fed at the Latin Mass as opposed to the Novus Ordo? Is it proper or not to ring the bells at the very start of mass, or is it up to the priest's discretion?   Visit the show page at thestationofthecross.com/askapriest to listen live, check out the weekly lineup, listen to podcasts of past episodes, watch live video, find show resources, sign up for our mailing list of upcoming shows, and submit your question for Father!

With Christmas coming up, you're likely in the full holiday swing of things — decorating your tree, eating certain foods, listening to particular music, and buying and wrapping gifts. But did you ever stop to think about why it is you're taking part in this slate of often weird-but-wonderful traditions?Brian Earl has traced the backstories of our Christmas traditions in his podcast and book called ChristmasPast. Today on the show, he shares some of those backstories with us, and explains how many of our seemingly fated and timeless traditions actually came about in fluky and fortuitous ways and are a lot more recent than we think. He first unpacks how Christmas went from being a small religious observance to a huge cultural celebration and how our idea of Santa Claus evolved over time, with our current conception of Old St. Nick being less than a century old. We then discuss how it is we ended up taking evergreen trees inside our houses and decorating them, the origins of the most recorded Christmas song in history, why fruitcake became the butt of jokes, and why hardly anyone roasts chestnuts anymore, on an open fire or otherwise. Brian shares what new Christmas traditions he's seeing emerge and which classic ones are going away, and I offer an important PSA to future parents about Elf on the Shelf. We end our conversation with Brian's tips for getting into the Christmas spirit if you haven't been feeling it.Resources Related to the EpisodeAoM Article and Video: How to Roast Chestnuts on an Open FireAoM Article: Be a Scrooge This Year — Reflections From A Christmas CarolThe evolving image of Santa ClausPew Research study on the changing ways Americans celebrate ChristmasVintage Flintstones Fruity Pebbles Christmas commercialVintage McDonald's Christmas commercialAoM Article: 11 Ways to Get Into the Holiday SpiritConnect With Brian EarlBrian's Website and Podcast
