This week we hit up Hop Butcher to discuss some wild politics over high ABV beers. We chat about travel stories from Hawaii and Australia, dissect the NSA's Signal chat debacle, and dive into Trump's revenge tour against universities and law firms. Good thing these beers are strong - it's been a heavy week!

Like some sort of softball-sized, hairy drupe falling from a tree to knock us on the head, within this lineup of four beers is a surprise that almost completely brings the show to a grinding halt. But otherwise, it's a fun little exploration of our relationship with coconut as an adjunct in barrel-aged stouts, and there's no suntan lotion to be found here. Also, 3 Floyds is normal now, Disney is entering ill-advised music territory, Head & Shoulders should sponsor this episode, and Ryan explains why the result of this show is like checking for a cockroach in your shoe. (It'll all make sense, later, we swear.) Thanks again to Dan Roemer for help in procuring the Phase Three! Beers Reviewed 3 Floyds Brewing - Cocomungo (Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels w/ toasted coconut and maple syrup) Hop Butcher for the World - Steel (Bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout w/ vanilla beans and coconut) Phase Three Brewing - Eunoia Batch 2 (Barrel-aged imperial stout w/ coconut and Saigon cinnamon) Half Acre Beer Company - Double Barrel 2x4 Benthic 2023 (Double bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout w/ toasted coconut, vanilla, and coffee)

It's been almost three years since the announcement that Hop Butcher for the World would be taking over the original Half Acre brewery space, and it's been a year since the rebranded taproom opened. So we take time to sit down with co-founder and co-owner Jude La Rose for a long chat about the present and future of his brewery that was recently named Craft Beer & Brewing magazine's top Small Regional brewery in the country. We dive into formulating recipes, developing a lager program, releasing periodic barrel-aged stouts, and giving a defined purpose to every hazy beer they release. We also reminisce about the early days and what it means to take over such a legendary Chicago beer location. In addition, we also review four Hop Butcher beers of different styles, get curious about that kief, and somehow fall into old sitcoms. All that and a shout out to the late Stas Bulanda. #BringBackFirkinFridays (Hit the GoFundMe for Nick Segura if you can help in any way.) Five years into cold IPA, the arguments still aren't settled, but one thing is certain—strategic brewers have embraced the style for the unique counterpoint it can provide to more ester-driven IPAs, and the focus on light body has struck a chord with beer drinkers who increasingly want strong hop notes in ever-paler beers. We thought it was time to revisit the subject with three brewers who are no stranger to the podcast, and who each have contributed to the evolution of the style in their own way. Sam Tierney of the Firestone Walker (https://www.firestonebeer.com) Propagator in Venice, California has helped develop some pioneering cold IPAs for the California brewery, like core brand Hopnosis. Jude La Rose of Chicago's Hop Butcher (http://www.hopbutcher.com) brews plenty of hazy IPAs, but continues to explore what hops can also do within the context of clear and light-bodied cold IPA. And Kevin Davey of McMinnville, Oregon's Heater Allen (https://heaterallen.com) and Gold Dot created the cold IPA style while at Wayfinder, but today is just starting to brew them again after focusing on lager for most of the past year. In this episode, the three brewers look at where IPA has come since those earliest days and what it looks like now, with topics that include: creating the counter-trend to hazy IPA by pushing bitterness alongside low finishing gravity finding cleaner, more “crystalline” hop expression by fermenting with lager yeast achieving additional package stability in cold IPA through lower FAN varying dry hopping temperatures and techniques managing sulfur production in cold IPA fermentations blending modern, classic, and Southern hemisphere hops in cold IPA pushing the lightest of color through ultra-pale malts and adjuncts controlling oxygenation to avoid overstimulating the lager yeast why they continue to focus on the style now And more. Luck number 13, that was the episode that todays guest originally joined us back on September 6th, 2016. In that episode we discuss their business model called an Alternating Proprietorship. He also joined us again on October 17th, 2017 as part of our series on Beer & Baseball. A 3-part series that looked at what is involved in developing a relationship with a local professional sports team. That episode, number 35, was entitled Good Ryes Wear Black at the White Sox's U.S. Cellular Field. The Good Ryes Wear Black, a Black IPA, was inspired by their beloved South Siders and was available in single 16oz cans at the Midwest Craft Beer Kiosk. Well, it's been a long time since we've had him on the podcast and a lot has happened since he first joined us back in 2016. But I will let you hear it all from him. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay on top of new episodes before they're released. And while you're on Facebook and Instagram we hope that if you like the podcasts you'll share these episodes with your family, friends and followers. If not…let's just keep that between us! Listen in as I chat with Jeremiah Zimmer, Co-Founder of Hop Butcher for the World located in Chicago, Illinois, as he brings us up-to-date on everything at Hop Butcher. Cheers!

Since throwing open the doors to their Lincoln Ave. taproom just a few months back, Hop Butcher has worked to offer some draft variety by stepping outside of the style(s) for which they're most recognized. For this episode, we got our hands on four cans that are not IPAs to see how well one of the country's best haze producers can make something for the hop-averse. Also, we say hello (and goodbye) to Winter Break Ryan which opens an unclosable rift between the hosts over crewneck sweaters and turtlenecks. We also consider the missed opportunity of an Italian Pilsner show; Ryan bores the bartender with his old man shit; Craig's got a bizarre preference with beer and pizza; and we have a bold new marketing plan for HBFTW and the White Sox. Last week on the podcast Nik ran down his adventures while Brad was in Italy, this week the tables turn. Although Nik wasn’t in Italy he took a break this week and let Brad explore the city. Brad shares about his week hitting up Half Acre, Cruz Blanca, Begyle, Dovetail, and Hop Butcher. Things are getting busy this holiday season, so be sure to keep an eye out for some fun episodes and videos on YouTube. Cheers!Having issues listening to the audio? With nearly 10,000 breweries in the US, and countless thousands more around the world, it can feel next to impossible to figure out where to go. That's where the Beer Travelers podcast comes in. Each episode we'll take a deep dive into a local beer scene, highlighting its best breweries, taprooms, and local wonders. And I hope we'll leave listeners feeling as if they're locals equipped with a plan of where to have their next pint. We've all spent enough time at home on our couches ticking off new beers; it's time to get out and explore the greater world of beer. On the first episode of the new Beer Travelers podcast from All About Beer, we start where it all began for our host Andy Crouch, his hometown of Chicago. And Andy has two of the best to help guide our exploration. Nik White and Chalonda White represent two of the freshest voices in craft beer. Chalonda, better known as Afro Beer Chick on social media, is a force of nature and her husband Nik is an old school Chicago beer guy who co-runs Chicago Beer Pass. Together, this dynamic husband and wife team are about as knowledgeable about their local scene as anyone we can think of.We discuss all the great Chicago breweries, where to get the best lagers, IPAs, and sour beers. Kate and Emily take the mic! It's that time of year again- when our wives have yet again so graciously agreed to sit down and talk with us about money after we wrestle the kids down for naptime, while we're away at the beach! Specifically during this episode we fielded some questions from the Facebook group and the ladies answered what their current splurges are, thoughts on moving our families to the burbs, ways to keep the grocery budget down, when we got financially naked, how to match different levels of risk tolerance, what it looks like to include kids in our family money conversions, and plenty of other nuggets of wisdom! During this episode we enjoyed A Plume of Many Hues by Hop Butcher for the World! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! Jude La Rose of Hop Butcher has a passion for hops. Today, he sits down with Chris and Mike to try to draw a line from the origins of pale ale to the ultra hoppy IPAs of today that have come to define craft beer.
