A conversation with Yelena Shkolnik, a partner at Jump Capital, a venture capital firm with growing interest in legal tech companies. Yelena shares her journey from investment banking and entertainment finance to the world of venture capital, highlighting her focus on identifying transformative technologies. The conversation delves into Jump Capital's investment philosophy, particularly their thematic approach and focus on Series A and B funding rounds. Yelena articulates what makes a legal tech company attractive to Jump, emphasizing the importance of demonstrated traction, a strong team dynamic, and a deep understanding of the specific challenges and opportunities within the legal industry.  Yelena provides a nuanced perspective on the billable hour model and the potential for technology, including AI, to reshape legal workflows and access to justice. She also shares her thoughts on the necessity of legal background for founders and whether legal tech will eventually just become "tech". Key Takeaways: A deep understanding of the legal industry's nuances and specific problems is crucial for attracting legal tech investment. While AI presents significant opportunities, the entrenched nature of law firms and the complexities of legal workflows require thoughtful and targeted solutions. The rise of legal operations within enterprises is driving demand for technologies that enhance efficiency and manage risk. The consumer side of legal tech holds significant potential for expanding access to justice.

In this episode, I tackle one of the biggest decisions you'll face as your design business grows: when to move out of your home office and into a dedicated studio space. Learn the key signals that it's time to make the move, how to budget for this significant investment, and why a studio space can transform both client perception and team dynamics.Hope you enjoy the episodeBeth xxEpisode NotesThe Home Office Reality CheckWorking from home has its perks—comfy clothes, coffee on hand, and efficiency. But there comes a point where your dining table setup or spare bedroom studio no longer supports the business you're building.Let's be honest, working from home has its perks. You're in comfy clothes, coffee is always on hand, and it can feel incredibly efficient. Until it isn't.Signs you might be outgrowing your home office include:• Constantly rearranging or working around home life• Hesitating to host client meetings in your space• Needing to hire team members with nowhere to put them• Wanting to create a more professional brand experienceThe Emotional ShiftMoving to a studio space isn't just a logistical decision—it's an identity shift. You're not just moving locations, you're stepping into a new identity as a business owner. One who is investing in space, presence and scale. This transition brings up big questions around confidence, money, team structure, and what kind of studio you're creating. The Financial ConsiderationsStudio space isn't cheap, and it's not just rent you need to consider:• Internet and utilities• Furniture and fit-out costs• Insurance and security• Cleaning and maintenanceI recommend looking at this decision through the lens of revenue per square meter: What will this space help you generate? Could it allow you to bring on another team member, raise your fees, or streamline your workflow so you take on more projects with less stress? Also consider the tax implications—office expenses are deductible, and separating your business from personal life can help with tax clarity. The Perception FactorA studio space tells clients, suppliers, and collaborators that you're established, trustworthy, and in it for the long game.It becomes part of your brand story. Clients are walking into your curated environment. They're experiencing your process before you even open your mouth and that elevates everything—your confidence, your pricing, and your position in the market.Team Dynamics and Studio CultureIf you're planning to grow your team, having a studio can be a game-changer:• Creates clear boundaries between work and home• Allows for real-time collaboration• Builds a studio culture where people feel aligned with your values• Attracts talent who want to be part of something biggerPerhaps most importantly, it creates a studio culture. One where people feel proud to come in, aligned with your values, and invested in the long-term success of your business.Practical Tips for Making the LeapReady to consider a studio space? Here's some practical tips:• Start small—you don't need a huge space in the trendiest suburb• Think about client flow from parking to signage to meeting space• Do a cost-benefit review with your accountant• Get support from designers who've made this transition beforeA small, well-located, beautifully styled space can be incredibly impactful. This episode is essential for interior designers who are feeling the limitations of their home office and considering the next step in their business growth. Whether you're ready to make the move now or planning for the future, these insights will help you make a confident, informed decision. Want to work together? What's the difference between a successful freelancer and one who struggles with feast or famine? It's not how good you are at your craft, but how you position yourself to clients. Amy Posner is a seasoned online entrepreneur and business coach who helps digital creative freelancers build breakthrough businesses. Over her 30-year career, she's launched six successful businesses (five of which are still in business today) and mentored thousands of freelancers to success.  Now, Amy focuses on empowering freelancers to grow the business they want by teaching them the skills they need to attract the right clients inside her Complete Breakthrough Freelancer course and on her podcast, Business Badassery. Overcoming Feast or Famine The biggest challenge for freelancers is feast or famine–a windfall of work followed by a period of little to no income. The best way to overcome this is with business systems and processes, so you always have another project in the pipeline. Amy teaches her students skills like writing proposals, selling on calls, and communicating the value they deliver. Many successful freelancers give their clients expert strategic advice, but are selling themselves as order takers–someone who does nothing more than follow orders and create deliverables. If you position yourself as a strategist, you're perceived as much more valuable.  The Difference between an Order Taker and an Expert The primary difference between order takers and experts is that experts deliver an experience, not just deliverables. It starts on the discovery call, when you first connect with the client. High-quality clients want a strategic partner, someone they can trust to give them expert advice and who is interested in getting results. Once you've landed the client, you need to deliver on the experience you've promised. When in doubt, overcommunicate and overdeliver. Again, systems and processes come in handy here. Keep the client in the loop on what's happening, especially for longer projects. Be reliable and do what you say you're going to do. Enjoy this episode with Amy Posner… Soundbytes 12:29-12:43 “I see so many successful freelancers who are giving expert advice, and they're counseling as experts, but they're selling themselves as a creator of deliverables. And you're seen in a very different light.” 18:02-18:21 “The truth is, you don't need a unique perspective. You need a perspective. If a client's going out looking, they don't care that I think the same thing you do. They care what I think. So they're not looking necessarily for originality. They're looking for a stake in the ground, that you believe in something and that you have something to say.”  Quotes “What I noticed was that you could be really great at your craft. And if you didn't have commensurate business skills, you didn't do as well as mediocre craftspeople who had the business side down.” “Nobody gets into business to sell stuff. They get into business because they love doing a thing.”  “I'm a chronic over-deliverer. I like to get invested in people and in getting results.” Links mentioned in this episode: From Our Guest Website: https://amyposner.com/ Connect with Amy Posner on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amyposnerbusinessgrowthmentor/  Connect with brandiD Download our free guide to learn 16 crucial website updates that attract more leads and convert visitors into clients: https://thebrandid.com/website-tweaks/ Ready to elevate your digital presence with a powerful brand or website? When your brand positions you as the only choice, clients stop asking how much and they start saying, “how do I sign up?” That's the power of this often overlooked brand positioner – your unique energy. When you sound just like your competitors, your audience can easily get confused. They will “price shop” or respond to the flashiest marketer. But when your authentic self shines through the noise, your brand becomes compelling and irresistible, positioning your offers to stand out because of your “secret sauce.” Today, I dive deep into the concept of differentiation and introduce what I call the fourth and most powerful differentiator – your brand energy. This isn't just about demographics or what you sell; it's about embracing your unique energetics and letting it become a powerful connection point with your audience. Many of us hide parts of ourselves, fearing they'll repel potential clients, but those deep, sometimes painful stories are exactly what can drive connection and trust. In episode 430 of the Amplify Your Success Podcast I outline the three widely recognized differentiators—who you work with, what you specialize in, and how you do it—but where real transformation lies is in your brand energy, how you're authentically you, and how you resonate on an unseen level. I'll show you how owning your signature vibe, telling emotional stories, and exposing your authentic quirks can make you unforgettable.  I'd love to hear what resonates with you and how you plan to amplify your brand's presence. Drop me a note, and let's continue the conversation on embracing your most compelling differentiator.   Key Takeaways:  00:53  The three commonly understood areas of differentiation, and why some of them have stopped working.  03:56  Discover how your unique energy can be a powerful competitive edge in engaging deeply with your audience, setting you apart in a crowded market 04:50  5 key areas of your brand energetics that set you apart.  07:04  How to deepen your emotional resonance through storytelling to create connection, and become memorable, differentiating yourself.  09:41  How storytelling moves people into action.  10:10  Discover how embracing and sharing your unique traits, like navigating health challenges, can foster authenticity and deeper connections with others. 11:23  How your quirks can become part of your brand energy and what you're known for.  12:20  The difference between your quirks and what you want to be known for, vs leaning into your wounds and your origin story as a catalyst for connection. 14:12  How to build an authentic bridge of trust from the world that your ideal clients are in and the world that you're now in by sharing your journey. 14:42  Learn how embracing a bold stance and confidently sharing your unique 'lighthouse message' can cut through the noise and attract your desired audience.  16:39  Discover how to confidently embrace and articulate the parts of yourself that feel uncertain, as well as how to leverage your unique brand energetics to attract and engage your ideal audience.   Resources Mentioned in This Episode:   Blog Post: 6 Reasons You Should Specialize As a Coach FREE DOWNLOAD: Get my proven 7 Step Framework and learn how to tap into Million-Dollar visibility streams Authority Accelerator 6 month Cohort: Discover your Lighthouse Message, and your hottest selling offer, then amplify the reach of your message by borrowing other people's audiences.
