Great Lakes (https://www.greatlakesbrewing.com) in Cleveland is an American craft beer institution—a brewery that got its start in the late '80s, when the concept of smaller breweries still seemed foreign to most drinkers. Now, 36 years later, the scale is much larger than it was in those early days on the seven-barrel pub system—yet some of those early brands persevere. While those beers inevitably evolve amid shifts in scale and tastes, the core ideas that inform them haven't changed. In this episode, longtime brewmaster Mark Hunger and co-CEO Steven Pauwels, the former brewmaster at Kansas City's Boulevard, talk about that evolution as well as new developments in hop-forward beers. Along the way, they touch on: brewing lager with proprietary yeast for a signature brewery flavor using pressurized fermentation and warmer temperatures for faster lagers using automation while double-checking with human testing adding a touch of dryness and drinkability through sparge pH adjustment using sulfur as a tool for flavor and shelf stability Oregon-grown Mt. Hood hops for American lager character evaluating Munich malt for their annual Oktoberfest beer using public variety hops such as Triumph, but not Centennial, in Midwest-style IPA brewing filtered, clear IPA with London Ale III yeast And more. Now somewhat relegated to an occasional fall seasonal from breweries, the Amber style is essential to the history of American craft beer as we know it. So we're pumped to see five local breweries dabble in amber ales and lagers, and we fall in love all over again (with the beers, not each other). Also, Craig has an unexpected pet, we accidentally have a moment of real beer talk about wilds and sours, Ryan vetoes an obvious 311 reference, and we are bringing our own ludicrous drinkware to the District Brew Yards until someone tells us “no.” Whoa-oh. In this episode Bob and I talk about yet another great lager style beer. This week it is the American/International Amber lager. A widely available, sessionable craft beer style that showcases both malt and hops. Amber lagers are a medium-bodied lager with a toasty or caramel-like malt character. Hop bitterness can range from very low to medium-high. Brewers may use decoction mash and dry-hopping to achieve advanced flavors. Style examples: Examples of this style: 1. Rhinegeist Brewery – Antelope 2. Dos Equis – Amber 3. Terrestrial Brewing - Erie Dusk ABV: 4.5-6.0% IBUs: 8-25 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: For darker lagers, like Vienna-style, Oktoberfest or Marzen-style lagers, and amber lagers, you'll want to go slightly warmer, in the 45 to 50 range. Stronger lagers, like a dunkel or doppelbock, would do well at 50. Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI Drink representative selection of the week: GLBC Eliot Ness Amber Lager 6.1% and 27 IBU. Beer as described by brewer: Admittedly, it's a bit of a paradox to name our Amber Lager for history's most famous agent of prohibition. But it's a smooth, malty (and dare we say, arresting?) paradox. Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. Living overseas can give you an interesting perspective on American beer culture. Although I’m originally from California, I’ve lived in the Czech Republic for almost 20 years now. While I miss many of the beers and breweries from back home, I really fell in love with Czech beer, dedicating a lot of my time to researching, writing about, and drinking it. In recent years I’ve been glad to see North American beer lovers develop much more interest in Czech beer. Since then, many U.S. and Canadian brewers have reached out to me with questions about recipes, equipment, and processes. I can tell that for a lot of people back home, Czech brewing is still rather weird and unknown, whether it’s the “black magic” of a triple-decoction mash, or the strange pours like the šnyt and mlíko, or our rarely spotted “yeast beer,” Kvasnicové Pivo. One of the standout U.S. brewers who actually gets Czech beer is Chris Lohring of Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts. Chris came through Prague himself, in 2012, doing research on how Czech beers are brewed, served, and drunk. I met up with Chris during that trip, and so did my friend and colleague Max Bahnson, who writes under the name Pivní Filosof. Chris got to visit Czech breweries; drink Czech beers; and observe the Czech process, approach, and culture. Since then, Notch Brewing has emerged as one of the leading proponents of Czech-style beers in North America. Not only does Notch make a Czech-inspired Světlý Ležák, or Pale Lager (aka Pilsner), but it also makes Tmavé Pivo, or Dark Lager, and Polotmavé Pivo, which means “half-dark beer,” or Amber Lager. At the Notch taproom in Salem, those beers are served from a Czech side-pour (or side-pull) faucet, into a Czech dimpled, half-liter mug. My Czech friends who have visited the Notch taproom said it’s the closest thing to a Czech beer experience you can get in the U.S. In this episode, I catch up with Chris Lohring when on his return to Prague, along with Notch Brewing’s production manager, Brienne Allan. They were both on a trip that included several hands-on brew days at different Czech breweries. I wanted to ask Chris and Brienne about the differences between Czech beer culture and American beer culture, as well as the differences in Prague since Chris’ last visit seven-plus years ago. I wanted to find out what beer drinkers in the States understood about Czech beer, brewing, and how we drink, and I wanted to know if there were any common misconceptions. Our meeting takes place over a few beers in a busy Prague café around the corner from my apartment, so there’s a fair amount of background noise—sorry about that. It was recorded in mid-February, 2020, about three weeks before the coronavirus closed off the Czech Republic and made travel here impossible, at least for now. The observations about Czech brewing and beer drinking made by Chris and Brienne, however, feel pretty timeless. Here’s Chris Lohring and Brienne Allan of Notch Brewing in Salem. Listen in.

Episode Notes Episode 66: Barrel Brothers Brewing Co’s Por Que No Mexican LagerIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time again where we take on that massive craft brew aisle to find the hidden treasures waiting for us there. This week we’re taking a look at Por Que No Mexican Style Amber Lager from Barrel Brothers Brewing Company in Windsor, CA. Why shouldn’t we give this one a shot? Let’s find out!Por Que No is a pale amber in the glass. The scent is very, very light. Overall it’s malty with some sweet spice and a little bit of breadiness. But what about the taste? There’s way more flavor to this one than I anticipated. It’s very subtle, though. That bready, fruity stuff from the scent comes through loud and clear here and there’s a really lovely bitterness that makes a showing right at the end. But none of these flavors are overpowering and the whole is light enough to remain refreshing but interesting from beginning to end. I also have to make a special note of the consistency of the beer. It feels good in the mouth without ever becoming thin or watery—a place where many other Mexican style lagers tend to fall apart in my opinion. This is a very nice, clean drinking beer. It’s the kind of beer that you’ll want food with, so pick some up and make a stop at your local taqueria for a pairing. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. It’s also a nice, tame 5.3% ABV, so you can enjoy a couple while you’re munching on those delicious tacos. That’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as we take a look at Dream of Perfect Beauty New American Hoppy Ale from Foreign Objects Beer Company. Why? Will this beer whisk us away to the ultimate experience of bliss? We’ll find out next week. Don’t forget to let us know what you’re drinking and what you’re thinking about the show. Vienna-Style Lager (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)Named after the city in which it originated, a traditional Vienna Lager is brewed using a three step decoction boiling process. Decoction Mashing is a way to conduct multi-step mashes without adding additional water or applying heat to the Mash Tun. It involves removing about a third of the Mash to another pot where it is heated to conversion temperature, then boiled and returned to the Mash Tun. Many brewers believe that the boiling of the mash gives the beer a flavor profile that cannot be achieved otherwise.Munich, Pilsner, Vienna, and dextrin malts are used, as well wheat in some cases. Its color reliably falls between pale amber and medium amber—there should be a reddish hue to examples of this style. Noble hops are used subtly, with the resulting beer having a crisp quality, a toasty flavor and some residual caramel-like sweetness. Vienna Lager and German Märzen have much in common. Although Austrian in origin and rare these days, some classic examples come from Mexico, such as Dos Equis Amber, the result of late 19th century brewers immigrating from Austria. -Color – Copper to reddish-brown-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Characterized by malty aroma and light malt sweetness, which should have a lightly toasted malt character.-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.-Perceived Bitterness: Low to medium-low, clean and crisp.-Body: Medium-ABV: 3.8%-4.3%-Glassware: Pilsener Glass - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass-Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)(https://www.beeradvocate.com)Samuel Adams Boston Lager | Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)Brewed by: Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams) Massachusetts, United Statessamueladams.com Style: Vienna Lager Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00% Notes / Commercial Description: Our original beer is full-flavored with a balance of malty sweetness contrasted by hop spiciness and a smooth finish.Did you know that Jim Koch tastes each batch of Boston Lager to make sure that it reaches our high standards? Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)(https://www.beeradvocate.com)Lager | Brooklyn BreweryBrewed by: Brooklyn Brewery New York, United Statesbrooklynbrewery.com Style: American Amber / Red Lager Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20% Notes / Commercial Description: In the late 1800’s Brooklyn was one of the largest brewing centers in the country, home to more than 45 breweries. Lager beer in the “Vienna” style was one of the local favorites. Brooklyn Lager is amber-gold in color and displays a firm malt center supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. Caramel malts show in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by “dry-hopping”, the centuries-old practice of steeping the beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer, smooth, refreshing and very versatile with food. Dry-hopping is largely a British technique, which we’ve used in a Viennese-style beer to create an American original.Toasted Lager | Blue Point Brewing CompanyBrewed by: Blue Point Brewing Company New York, United Statesbluepointbrewing.com Style: American Amber / Red Lager Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50% Notes / Commercial Description: Our flagship and most popular brew, Toasted Lager is the best American amber Lager you’ll ever taste. To back up that claim, we use six different grains to perfect a balanced flavor of malt and hops, and a special proprietary lager yeast to give Toasted Lager an exceptional, long-lasting smooth finish that’s meant to be enjoyed year-round. We had a listener email into the show asking for us to cover something called Czech Amber Lager (category 3c in the new BJCP guidelines). Having never had a commercial example of this beer, it was a challenge we quickly accepted! First off, though, we discuss what it means to have a commercial example ready, and how that affects the ability to understand and interpret the BJCP guidelines. After a bit of banter about the regionalism inferred by the name, we dig into the closest commercial beers we can find that may fall into the Czech Lager category.
