In the 18 months since our first podcast with True History, a lot has changed for the Toronto Lords of Lager. Adam and Matt joined Cee and Nate on the pod to catch up on the haps, including their partnership with their in-house, authentic Austrian food program (Beisl), their approach and brand voice on social media vs newsletters, their friendship with the Mellön boys, how their Canadian Pilsner Project came about, why Adam doesn't do tasting notes, how valuable their co-sign is, their Gold Star brand and why it's different from other True History beers, how they work with their maltster in the US, the difference between an Italian Lager and Italian Pilsner, their fun serving methods (including the hot poke stick), and their dope events. They got into a half dozen TH bangers - Gold Star Premium Lager, The Canadian Pils from The Canadian Pilsner Project, Something Italian Italian-style Lager, Beisl Beer Modern Vienna Lager, Mild Lockout Helles Lager, and The Governator Doppelbock. This was hilarious and informative - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Ever heard the term Agrihood before? Fox Point Brewing is more then just another San Diego Brewery, it's part of a whole echo system in Encinitas called Fox Point Farms. Yes, tucked away within a stones throw away from the 5 freeway is a farm, coffee roaster, market, farm-to-table restaurant, apothecary and brewery. This week we get to know Greg and Brian from Fox Point over a few beers and first up is a tribute to the boss, a Vienna Lager that takes it's name from the city they founded themselves in, Little Oaks.
On this episode we try Von Trapp Brewing's incredible variety pack which includes the Vienna Lager, Pilsner, Dunkel, and Helles! We pop into each amazing brew while discussing why the hills are alive with the sound of beer, the hurkey, wearing only a cummerbund and a bow tie, pink dingleberries, Kyle's Viennese accent, sticking your nose in a crusty loaf of bread, driving in VT, leaf peepers, we've got a podcast your mom needs a podcast to listen to, 5 years of podcasting and new clamps, gimmeeabeer, Capital B beer, the evolution of a beer drinker, and the risk Von Trapp is taking. P&C drink and review Crabtown Classic, a local Vienna Lager from Jailbreak Brewing, then discuss Julian Assange. The Assange case brings out the contrast between freedom of the press and national security. Assange had a libertarian streak and was suspicious of authority -- especially governmental authority. He believed information should be free, particularly when it exposes the misdeeds of governments. Many believe Assange was supporting whistleblowers, and that his case was a test case for freedom of the press. Some of the things Assange revealed allegedly betrayed "sources and methods" and compromised national security. Assange's prolonged legal battle over extradition from the UK to the US raises concerns about fair trial standards, the potential for politically motivated charges, and the treatment of whistleblowers and journalists under international law. Is Assange a whistleblower deserving of protection, or a criminal who recklessly endangered lives? The debate is central to the case and reflects broader societal questions about the ethics of leaking classified information.
Prince Edward County, an island on a lake in Ontario, is one of the most picturesque places in the province that just happens to have an impeccable craft beer (and wine) scene. Nestled in the quaint town of Bloomfield, Matron Fine Beer have really made a great home in PEC. Co-Founder and Head Brewer Justin joined Cee and Nate to chat about his brewing history in Ottawa and Kingston, the difficulties in making a great lager, why they chose Prince Edward County, the PEC beer world, their recent financial struggles and how the community is helping them overcome it, his fave packaging sizes, their summer LCBO drops and the future of Matron. They crushed six bangers: Yeasayer Lagerbier, Dapper Vienna Lagerbier, Muff Darkbier, Janky IPA, Bobo Farmhouse Wheat, Olde Pals Cream Ale (collab with Beyond The Pale). A very special spooky cast with the always lovely Kailey Tedesco! Author of a new book of poetry about the mother of the Jersey Devil, Kailey picked an incredible cast for us. We chat childbearing, birth control, loss, and that weird time when She and Him dominated the airwaves.
"It was just a day of horse racing" explains Andreas Krenmair, Beer Author and Historian and most recent guest on Beer Me, as he describes the first Oktoberfest. Austrian-based Andreas has done significant research on the Vienna Lager style and Austrian and German beer & brewing history. Most recently he joined the Beer Me podcast to begin to scratch the surface of Oktoberfest history. He explains how a city-wide celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen where the main attraction was a horse race has grown into the massive celebration of Oktoberfest. This year, the 188th Oktoberfest kicked off in Munich, Germany September 16th and ended on October 3rd. A celebration that draws numbers in the millions with additional celebrations worldwide. (Check out this recent episode to see how Jack's Abby celebrated). The progression is fascinating to look back on, from the different attractions throughout the year to the actual beer served. Andreas guides the listeners through his studies in the evolution of the world-famous celebration. A detailed map from 1843 shows the 22 publicans that served beer from Munich and the surrounding towns. These include some well-known producers, including "Hackerbräu, Pschorrbräu, Löwenbräu... Maderbräu, Knorrbräu, Oberkandler, Unterkandler, Singlspielerbräu" explains Andreas.Andreas also explains how the regulations on which beer can be served shifted throughout the years. Oktoberfestbier has even achieved PGI (Protected Geographic Indication) status in the EU.With 188 years of celebrations, Andreas was only able to scratch the surface of Oktoberfest history, but a worthy topic to tap into! This week it the return of Skull Session Vienna Lager, our tribute beer to the best damn band in the land.
We visited a new spot in town, Mission Brewing in the neighborhood of Kensington in San Diego, CA. It's a tasting room and is a complete 180 from the previous owner of the place. We brought with us an Oktoberfest beer "Vienna Lager" 5.4%. Yes, is that time of year. Almost two years doing this and it's our 1st Oktoberfest beer on the show, Ja. Breaking News! The Hard Root Beer is back at Mission. Also, ever heard of Trappist beer? Listen and find out. Cheers. IG @beerbellysocietyEmail beerbellysociety@gmail.comTikTok @beerbellysociety
As everyone knows, the three great lager-brewing regions are Bavaria, Bohemia, and Austria. Wait, Austria? Sure it was famous in the last century for Vienna lager, but what has it done lately? We have Franz Hofer on the show today to answer this very question. Franz splits his year between Oklahoma and Vienna and writes about the lager-lands on his website, Tempest in a Tankard. Austria is, no kidding, a truly special place where one of the world's major styles whets the whistles of a nation—while somehow staying hidden from the rest of the world. Find Franz at his website: https://tempestinatankard.com/ Music: Herbert von Karajan, "Austria: Land der Berge, Land am Strome"

Following a seven-week ‘summer' sabbatical, the Bums are finally back in the rail yard, with Episode 0061. The top begins dark, with a triad of dead motherf*ckers to include Vin Scully, Bill Russell and Len Dawson (with Virginia McCaskey waiting for her wings); NFL chatter returns as Deshaun “Sexual Assaulter” Watson takes several shots in the face, leaving a permanent scar; most of the smoke hits the Cleveland Browns, the NFLPA, and well, everyone; MLB post-season baseball starts to take shape as Chicago fans look down at their empty cups; the Padres are on a buying spree (where's the dough coming from); Stuntman and Ringworm expert Fernando Tatis Jr. gets taken to the woodshed; the trials and tribulations of Pete “Super Creep” Rose continue for the worse; Serena hangs up her racket, closing a once in a generation career; before closing the top with talk of the “new” Big Ten (which no longer has any meaning). The bottom half kicks off with another world-famous beer review, as SuperFan McD donates another creation out of Bean Town in the form of Lamp Lighter Brewing's Vienna Lager, “Barley Smalls” (ABV 5.1%); Eddie walks his family junket to Lisbon, Portugal (as suitcases may or may not have been chock full of sardine/fish tins); Rocky, Nicky Fish Hooks and company survive the Alaskan outback and coastal grizzly bears; before closing with special Paddy birthday surprise for the ages. All of this and a tin of sardines. Tune in for the low down!Recorded on August 25th, 2022 at B.O.M.'s global headquarters, Paddy's Southside Cave, in Chicago, IL USA.

Pazuzu Algarad was a self-proclaimed satanist who had a thing for body modifications, animal sacrifices, drinking blood, orgies, and murder. He had an unstable childhood that lead him down a path of self destruction. As an adult he changed his name to Pazuzu for "religious reasons," tattooed his face, sharpened his teeth, and stopped bathing. He started taking up weird, ritualistic habits and surrounding himself with other young, misfit adults. In his new crew he found two accomplices (who also happened to be his fiancés), and two victims. Tune in to hear about Pazuzu Algarad's house of horrors and vile crimes. Summer is coming and it's time for some Mexican Lagers Mexican Lagers are so hot right now. The CEO of Constellation brands even goes as far as saying he believes Modelo is about to become America's favorite beer. The data kind of supports that claim, with Consellation's brands (including Modelo, Pacifico, and Corona) seeing 14% growth in the most recent quarter. Craft breweries are cranking out more Mexican Lagers as well. Most are simple drinkin' beers akin to a Pale Lager / Clara. But some are going deeper into the genre with Vienna Lagers and others. To make matters even more confusing, if you look at Modelo Especial on Untappd it calls itself an American Lager, then description says it's a Pilsner. This thing has quite the identity crisis going on. Either way, Brian enjoyed this one but I thought it was a bit too sweet, especially if they are claiming it's a Pilsner. Corona brought by memories of drinking in my younger days and I'd still crush several of these by the pool or on the beach if that's what's available. For some craft representation we sampled Tactical Brewing's collaboration with Cholo Dogs - El Campéon. This elote-inspired lager is brewed with smoked malt, flaked corn, tajin, and limes and was much more enjoyable than I expected. As the temps heat up many of these beers are perfect for cooling down. No matter if they are America's favorite or not they're nice to pack in the cooler. Correction:We mention in this episode that Modelo is poised to take the top spot in American beer sales Although this claim was made by Constellation's CEO, the data reflects sales for all Constellation brands and not just Modelo. We apologize for lying to you like that and we'll do better in the future. Silver Bluff Brewing is passionate about Mexican Lager Jeff Coyle loves Mexican lagers. So much so that he wrote a detailed article to help others understand the style. If you think Corona when you think of Mexican beers, you should definitely read the article. But first, make sure to listen to our interview with Jeff and his brother Kevin Coyle. The duo are part of the team behind Silver Bluff Brewing Co. Their Mexican lager is a hybrid of sorts. Riding the line between the Clara (Corona) and another traditional Mexican style, the Vienna Lager. Right, Vienna Lager, traditional Mexican beer. Seriously. Locals went crazy for their take on this refreshing brew and it's their top selling beer now. If you're looking for something else they've got plenty of other beers on tap. As we talked they had just brewed a Dry Irish Stout to get ready for St. Patrick's Day, making us realize the holiday is closer than we realized. The Brothers Coyle love their community almost as much as they love beer and making a place where people could gather over a well-made, approachable pint is something their most excited about at Silver Bluff. If the beer and beer garden don't reel you in maybe the coastal scenery of Georgia's Golden Isles will. Maybe both? For now, their beer is distributed in a fairly small area but they are making more beer and hope to expand even further soon. If you brew it, will they drink? Textile Brewing is just a few miles from the Field of Dreams. My clever mind thought of the "if you brew it" line as soon as I heard this fact. Of course, it's the same line that everyone thinks of. Great minds, right? I managed to hold off for most of the show on making the "joke," but it is a fun fact about the brewery. Another fun fact, founder Tom Olberding had no brewing experience when he decided he was going to open a brewery. To compliment his skills he hired Nick Ashton as his assistant brewer, who also had no brewing experience. Lack of experience aside, Textile is offering up some really tasty beers. We sampled a Blonde Ale, Vienna Lager, IPA, and a coffee-pumpkin ale and all were damn good. Cheers to the new guys. If you find yourself in Dyersville, IA stop in and find out for yourself. We hear their beer pairs great with a Canadian bacon and sauerkraut pizza.

In this episode Pete catches up with Braden Beggs at Project Brewing. A keen homebrewer with a mechanical and process engineering background, Braden is living two dreams by building and running a small brewbar in a suburban industrial estate while holding down a ‘real' job to keep his family fed. But, as you will learn, this is no part-time hobby but a well-planned work-life-passion balance involving good time management, plenty of long hard hours and presumably a good deal of patience from the mother of his five kids. We spoke in the weeks before Melbourne returned to Stage 3 Covid Restrictions and chatted about the pressures of adjusting to the reduced operating conditions and the opportunities that those same restrictions presented. We also look at Project Brewing's core range and between us delight at the fact that two favourites among loyal regulars are the Vienna Lager and, wait for it – the Hefeweizen. Our discussion highlights how our beer preference is framed by our individual beer experience and possibly influenced by our beer prejudices. It makes us realise that while someone is discovering a Hazy someone else is discovering a Witbier. There's plenty in this chat to interest homebrewers, start-ups and those with breweries in planning so grab a Hef, pull up a barstool and enjoy the conversation. In this episode, we're hanging at one of the OG spots in LA: Smog City Brewing. These guys kill it on pretty much every type of style they do..and for this episode, we're drinking something a little new. They retooled their Hoptango IPA into something, well, hazy! That, and they just released an awesome Vienna Lager. Tune in and see what they are all about!
