(NSFW) Join Ed, Chris, and Nate in this episode as Ed returns from Spain and shares his discoveries about the local craft beer scene—or the lack thereof. Ed recounts his visit to a single craft beer bar and a memorable drinking session with some Irish lads. The conversation shifts to Wisconsin, revealed as having the drunkest counties in the US, leading to a discussion about binge drinking and whether the hosts themselves are binge drinkers. Nate surprises the guys with his newfound love for barrel-aged stouts from Wren House, despite the hefty price tags. And his history of hating on them. They also discuss an article from Hop Culture titled "2024 is the Year of the Dark Lager," reflecting on the popularity of Czech lagers last year and debating whether dark lagers will dominate the scene this year. The team lists some of the best dark lagers to try, making this episode a must-listen for beer enthusiasts! Hop Culture - Rise of the Dark Lagers Article Support US! Buy Us a Beer! Beer People John and Richie return for a new episode format in which we discuss the state of the beer industry over the past year. John's now into the second year of running The Daily Beer Bar, after gigs at Hop Culture and Cool Material, and Richie's making BIG career moves after leaving Victory Brewing. Their unique perspectives on the industry shed light on 2023's style trends, economic competition in the beer market, non-alcoholic beer, whether we've *finally* reached the year of the lager, and more. We end with each person's hot takes for 2024, and a couple wish list items, too. IG handles: The Daily Beer Bar, John, The Brewedat Podcast, Richie Follow us on Instagram and check out our website. Like most of my beer friends, I first met Chantel Columna on Instagram. Our online conversations eventually led to an in-person meeting when a work trip brought Chantel to Atlanta in 2021. We enjoyed beers while diving into a conversation about the beer industry and life at large. Last year, my husband and I traveled to Denver. I knew I couldn't leave the city without visiting Novel Strand Brewing Company, the brewery Chantel, along with her husband, Tamir Danon, and Ayana Coker, opened in 2018. Again, this meetup led to a deep conversation about culture and life. With a great selection of beers and a focus on Tamir's Israeli and Chantel's Dominican culture, it's no surprise to me that last year, Hop Culture named the brewery the best in the country for those very same things and more. Novel Strand doesn't shy away from injecting their culture into thei r brewery. I was reminded of this passion when I ran into them at this year's Craft Brewers Conference, and we continued our easy flowing conversation over incredible Lagers. After sharing great talks with Chantel, it was hard for me to keep her compassionate and endearing energy from you. In this episode, we'll talk about the business of beer with a key focus on her work as general manager for Novel Strand. How does she approach this role? What's a North Star that guides her in work and life? We also share our experiences with entrepreneurship and what we've both learned along the way.
Kenny Gould (Founder) and Grace Weitz (Sr. Content Editor) of the legendary Hop Culture Magazine talk about how it all got started, the Queer Beer Box, hosting beer festivals, Kenny's upcoming fantasy novel, and bringing to life Grace's vision for Beers Without Beards. You might be looking for a punchline here but you won't find it. In Episode 24 ATB went to Lorenzo's to sit down with Esker Hart and Hazeboiz...in other words, Dan went to Scott's to sit down with Bobby and Rob. Bobby was nice enough to bring his new stout, Hibernation, to share with the group and let everyone know how they can possibly score a bottle. The third segment features Rob, Dan and Scott weighing in on Hop Culture's "new" list of "55 Beer IG Accounts to Follow". There are some real gems in this segment...not to be missed. Last and certainly not least, local and national releases. A lot of fun and some hard hitting journalism in this one. Thanks for tuning in and we hope you all enjoy!

This week, we're talking to arguably the most jovial soul to ever come out of the Steel City -- Kenny Gould!Kenny has a wild story, laced with the entrepreneurial themes we absolutely love. He got his start as a writer for Gear Patrol, all while nursing a growing love for beer on the side. He decided to take the next logical step and open a free online digital publication called Hop Culture, which itself quickly morphed into largely a niche craft beer festival organizer...obviously. Kenny then sold this company to the parent company of Untappd, Next Glass (which also owns Beer Advocate), of which he is now creative director. Obviously. We get more into the nitty gritty of business than is the norm, and it was an absolute blast. Listen to our conversation with this galaxy diamond of a man, available everyone now! ......... ................... ......................... Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill
A conversation with Hop Culture co-founder Kenny Gould about Untappd, Beer Advocate, and Next Glass’s plans for the future. We also discuss our mutual love of Pittsburgh and its distinctive beer scene.
Episode 135 : The Dinner Party Alex and Nick are back for a week where we kind of stay on topic. We start by talking about winter! From there we discuss the reopening of America and shout out Trace Brewing for opening for on-site consumption this week. We touch on Zelienople's troubles with open alcohol containers on borough grounds. We go in-depth with our favorite Food Network shows and what we love about food competition shows. Nick talks about Shubrew's can club. Alex talks about his experience at Eleventh Hour. Fueled by Hops takes over the conversation with #waxwednesday and #TIPAthursday and then we get into a very important discussion on glassware. Alex learns some things about glassware and the glassware community. After glassware, Nick introduces a segment about what you bring to dinner at a friend's house and this basically drives the rest of the episode. Obviously we lean on the “craft beer” aspect but this conversation keeps us guessing the whole time. We wrap up this episode with a shoutout to Hop Culture. (Juicy Brews 420 coming soon!) We wrap with the normal shoutouts and a good ole cheers! Thanks for listening! This week’s guest invented one of the most impactful things in American beer history —but it’s not a beer style, or a recipe, or a festival, or a piece of equipment—it’s an app. Untappd grew from a side project for Greg Avola and his partner Tim Mather—one that they moonlighted for on weekends—to a leading social experience for beer geeks in a very short amount of time. Basically you try a beer, you log the experience, and it keeps track of your history. You can share that experience with others, rate it, post pics, tag bars and breweries where you enjoyed it—each little interaction creates a massive web of crowd data over time. Some producers find it fascinating and valuable. Others are haunted by it and think it’s ruining beer. Or maybe already has. But it’s surely, like any software, largely what we make of it. But what is Untappd itself made of? This interview follows on co-founder Greg Avola’s recent exit from his role at the company—after it was acquired by Next Glass a few years ago, Greg’s role became less of a product engineer and tweaker, and more of a creative director, working across a lot of other roles, outlining new strategies, and integrating with the ecosystem of follow-on acquisitions like Beer Advocate, and most recently Hop Culture. With the intent to build a B2B and B2C ecosystem that enabled the rating, tracking, promotion and purchasing of the beers people find most interesting. Basically leveraging content to create a new sort of tier in the 3-tier system. But it’s not without its challenges, both personal and professional. In this conversation Greg talks a lot about what it’s like to be a founder of a small tech project that goes big. The burden that places on the individual, and how evolving in an acquisition environment is fraught with personal challenges. But it also outlines how the scope of Untappd is shifting. Their numbers are down in the U.S. but growing rapidly abroad. Not unlike what happened with one of its predecessors, Ratebeer. And the other acquisitions, like Beer Advocate, haven’t really panned out the way it was imagined, leaving most of the creative and strategic onus on Untappd itself, a challenge it seems to have met with some renewed focus on content, events, and overall community-building in the past year. In Greg’s open letter about his decision to step down, he was uncommonly transparent about his rationale, experiences, and hopes. And that’s the catalyst for us talking today—from one start-up founder to another. I think it’s critical that more people openly share the nature of the sacrifices people like Greg make to see their idea grow.
John A. Paradiso, managing editor at Hop Culture magazine, joins the pod to talk about the publication, being an influencer, and a lot more. It's a supersized episode!
Over the past few years, one organization has dominated the conversation surrounding diversity and inclusion online. Beer Kulture, founded by Dom and Latiesha Cook in 2017, has been unapologetic in their approach to ensuring BIPOC have a voice in craft beer. With features in Bloomberg, Forbes, Vinepair, Brewbound, Hop Culture, Good Beer Hunting and of course, BAOS Podcast, the world is truly taking notice. Converting to full non-profit status earlier this year, Beer Kulture's mission has only intensified, with scholarships, food and clothing drives, and an active industry job board making up only some of their activities. Cee and Tiff finally sat down with Latiesha after a long online friendship to share some beers (Tiesh rocked Beer Kulture's two Cloudwater collabs, a Festbier and a Märzen, while Cee and Tiff got into Doom Boy from Town Brewing and Black Is Beautiful from Sir John x Weathered Souls) and laughs. This is a fun one, enjoy! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Fresh off a bottling run of a fruited spruce beer, the guys begin with a back-and-forth about the merits of one of Maine’s few indigenous adjuncts. Then things pivots to the upcoming trip to Los Angeles, with a discussion of their favorite LA movies, the food and beer they’re most excited to enjoy, and their first experience at the Comedy Store. This leads Matty to share a previously-withheld, albeit long-standing resolution: to perform standup! He spends the rest of the episode in extreme discomfort, but in trying to change the subject, drops what just may be the funniest story involving airport security and prescription cough syrup you’ve ever heard.

Episode 72 : Homecoming and City Hopping Nick and Jake are back this week. Nick recaps Juicy Brews: Homecoming! Jake played golf. Nick was blown away by Dewey Beer Co's Secret Machine and he was really impressed with Hightower Brewing from Rayland, OH (South of Steubenville, not Youngstown like he said on the podcast). We talk about Hop Culture's festival model and our thoughts on how these fests keep operating at a high level of fun and excitement. After Juicy Brews, Nick and Jake touch on the Steel City Beer/Couch Brewery beef from last week. We take a neutral stand because we are friends with both sides and we support the craft beer community and we stand with local craft beer everywhere. Nick says “at the end of the day” way too many times this episode. To wrap up Juicy Brews: Homecoming, Nick gives his top 3 from the fest. Dewey Secret Machine Triple Double takes the top spot, Secret Machine Blackberry Coconut Vanilla was #2 and Eleventh Hour BYS (Burn Your Suit) took 3rd. Sour series become the focal point after that along with hard seltzers and lactose beers. We wrap up this week pretty abruptly. Cheers! Beer We Drank: Spy Dolphin - Dancing Gnome (DIPA - 8.5%)

Podcast 29 : Spooky Brews and more! In a tough weekend for Pittsburgh we want to extend our deepest condolences to all those effected by the events at Tree of Life in Squirrel Hill. Getting back to normal form we discuss beers we're drinking and events we went to this week. Beer #1: Mashmellow - Hitchhiker Brewing (Cereal Stout with Count Chocula - 7.3% Stout) Alex and Nick really enjoy this version of this beer. We've had it before but really feel like they perfected the style and it tastes like the milk left at the end of a bowl of cereal. In our first segment of the week we all discuss our top 5 emojis. There's no way to convey how stupid this conversation got, but listen along to figure out which ones we're actually talking about. If you read this, post your favorite emoji or your top 5 in the comments on Instagram. Jake went to Hop Culture's Spooky Brews on Friday. He gave us a full review of the event and the beers that he had. Beer #2: Mike - Magnify/Dancing Gnome collaboration (Ginger and Orange IPA - 6.5% IPA) Way too much ginger really blew out the palette on this one. Better in the can than at the Birthday Party. Glad we got to try it but it was not for us. Jake listed his 3 favorite beers and we discuss beer festivals in general and rehash some Birthday Party stuff, but overall Jake had a good time and had his complaints kept to a minimum. We get into some more nuances in beer styles and bash the Sour IPA trend. Beer #1 (From Jake) : Hyperfocus - Aeronaut (New England IPA - 6.8% NEIPA) Fresh and hazy, enjoyable if you're drinking a couple of them. Sara joined us toward the end of the cast and gave us her top 5 emojis and gave her thoughts on the final beer of the night. Jake's favorite costume of the night was the Cards Against Humanity couples costume. “How do I keep my relationship status?” - “Lumberjack fantasies”. Thanks to Hop Culture for putting on great events that we can discuss at length on these podcasts. We wrapped up with social media shoutouts and the King ShuBoo release. Thanks for listening!
Podcast 25: Live from the Couch! This week is a very special edition of the podcast as we were recording at Couch Brewery with head brewer Cary! Beer #1: Recliner - Couch Brewery (Oatmeal Stout 6.5% ABV) Very dark and not super heavy, we really enjoyed this one. We fired a bunch of questions at Cary and he took them all in stride. His first story was about how Couch got started. Cary explains how he and his crew balance their day jobs and the brewery. Alex asked about how Cary got into craft beer. Cary started out with a lot of imports and kind of grew into his own creations from there. Cary tells the story of how the crew got together and scouted a bunch of places in Pittsburgh to find the perfect location to sit on the couch and drink a beer. Couch is made to be comfortable and relaxed. The story of the bar is up next. Cary and the guys found this dive bar in Tarentum and they snagged the bar when the building was going to be changed over to a soup kitchen… Hilarity ensued. After the bar story, Cary had to check the beer. Beer #2: Wake Up Protocol - Dancing Gnome/Triple Crossing (NE DIPA - 8.5% ABV) Hazy as hell, really refreshing and a solid drinker. Beer #3: Nobody's Robot - Dancing Gnome (DIPA - 8.2% ABV) Very fruity nose. Alex and Sara got a bit of hop bitterness. While Cary was away we discuss the aesthetic of Couch and the furniture. We touched on some of the beers we had during DG's Birthday Party. Hop Culture threw one hell of a bash. Cary returns! Thanks to all of our listeners! From there we discuss social media and technology in the craft beer industry. One thing that stands out about Couch is that Cary and the guys built their “hot side”(where they boil the wort) from scratch and its a totally unique system that no one anywhere has it. He elaborated on the brewery business plan and how they were able to itemize purchases and time frame to develop the brewery. Cary loves welding and basically made the “hot side” from scratch. He expands on that quite a bit. We all start firing shots at Mike, who we've never met but we already love. ANNOUNCEMENT!!!! We will be running a contest on Instagram this week to give away a VIP Ticket to Pittsburgh Libations Week Kick Off Bash!!!! Cary returns! And we fired a bunch of beer questions at him. His favorite beer is Recliner. Mike likes IPAs and Darren wanted a Hefeweizen. Cary explained why they have a wide variety of types of alcohol at Couch. They have a full bar of local spirits to cater to everyone. They carry Boyd and Blair Vodkas, Liberty Pole Spirits, Quantum Spirits, McGlaughlin Distillery, Maggie's Farm Rum, etc. The orange sectional we were sitting on has a great story that Cary told. We have a great discussion on editing and curse words. Jake wanted to make an appearance so we put him on speakerphone. We play Jake's favorite game: “What questions did you already ask?” What's Cary's favorite beer and style? Jake asked the tough questions. What is the hardest part of owning a business in the service industry? Beer #4: Atomic Punk - Couch Brewery (Amber ale with fall spices - 5.5% ABV) There is no pumpkin in this beer. Cary used Atomic Clock and added pumpkin style spices to a keg that's almost kicked already! They're making more though! Cinnamon nose and the allspice and cloves come through in a light and well rounded amber ale. Cary discussed their canning process. Individually canning is extremely labor intensive. They had the whole crew on it for Atomic Meltdown. We have a quick math lesson to figure out about 13 cases of that beer were canned. #91 Kenny Gould I recently met Kenny Gould on a shoot of a TV pilot. I was playing the part of the host of the show, and Kenny, was one of my judges. A very picky judge is what he had to portray, and I soon realized that the person he was playing on the show, was not his true character. Kenny is ridiculously funny, intelligent, and down to earth. Not only that, but he is self made successful entrepreneur. Kenny Gould is Co-founder, and Editor in Chief of Hop Culture Magazine created right here in Pittsburgh, a periodical that is distributed all over the globe digitally. It has readers in every corner of the world that want to talk about their favorite subject- BEER. I myself am a craft brewer, having gotten into the process years ago. I love the process and the community that goes into brewing beer. It is so supportive. I don't brew a ton anymore because I realized I was gaining weight at a rapid pace. When you brew a 5 gallon batch of your favorite clone (Old School Dog Fish Head), you end up with about 2 cases of beer on your hands. What do you do when you have that much beer? You drink it, a lot. I had to take a step back from brewing it, but I still love to indulge in craft home brew every now, and then, and so does the general population. Craft breweries are popping up everywhere. Here in Pittsburgh, we probably have at least 20 with more "brewing" every month. Kenny and his friend and other founder Travis Smith saw that potential, and realized a magazine catered towards craft beer would be essential. So Hop Culture was born, and sprouted. They now have contributors from across the world wanting to share their stories. I had no idea Brazil had a craft beer culture, but I found out about that in this podcast. We talk about beer in this episode, but we also touch on so much more than that. Kenny is first, and foremost a writer. (Kenny, stop judging my grammar) He studied creative writing, contributing to Time Out New York, Thrillist, Table, Good Food Pittsburgh, Local Pittsburgh, and Craft Pittsburgh, among many other publications. I also found out that he has helped people in prison with their creative writing projects. It was very moving to hear about it. Another aspect of his life is yoga, which is near and dear to me. Kenny is a teaches yoga, and also discovered he could combine his two loves together- yoga, and beer into an event focused on both. It's called Ales and Ohms. Kenny teaches yoga at different breweries in Pittsburgh, and after the flow, guests get to raise a glass to each other, and quench their thirst. I can't think of a better way to drink my beer. I hope you enjoyed this episode! Hop Culture is giving away a free yoga tank top for this episode!
