We're celebrating International Women's Day with our friend Charolette (@charolettebeerme). We sit down with Charolette to talk about her career in beer, how she got into the industry, the beers she's made, her event planning initiatives like Lager Lounge with the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild (@ilcraftbeer), and fun shirts we should make We also got to be a part of a really cool project Charolette led in Chicago. More than 100 women in all facets of the Chicago beer industry (including your favorite beer podcast) got together to brew Vibes Since 1920. The beer pays homage to the history of women in Chicago whose unified efforts to champion equality for all, inspire change in their communities, and leave the world a better place than where they found it have paved the way for generations to come. Charolette dreamed up this opportunity as a way for women in the beer industry to connect, learn from each other, and create a network of support. Vibes Since 1920 will be distributed by Solemn Oath's brand Hidden Hand. $2 from every 4-pack, $1 from every pint, and a portion of wholesale sales will go to the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild's Illinois Diversity in Brewing Scholarship. We may be biased because we helped brew this beer, but it rips. It's an extremely drinkable classic Pale Ale, with Citra, Amarillo, and Wakatu hops. There's a really nice tropical brightness and a malty dimension from the Briess Caramel and Vienna malt. We're so proud to have been part of this project, and we hope you enjoy the beer! Today's guest, if we're speaking in beer years, is a lifelong friend. But what feels like a lifetime really only started around 2011 in Chicago when Good Beer Hunting, at the time just a personal hobby of mine, was basically unknown outside of a small community in Chicago. At the time, Paul Schneider was still a history teacher in the burbs homebrewing and volunteering at small start-up breweries around the area.  We met at a Goose Island First Thursday event, which was a loosely defined monthly occasion where fans got together in the Seibel Institute room in front of the Clybourn Brewpub. We would share dark Goose Island beers, home-brews, and other sought after bottles. It was truly the glory days of the 2nd wave of craft beer kind of thing.  The timeline is too full of milestones between then and now, but here's a quick look at Paul's career in craft beer: after volunteering around town, he got his first real gig at Solemn Oath in Naperville—as one of their first employees.  he went on to fill a broad role there between operations, special creative projects, some brewing and marketing he left to sign on as a founding brewer as a partner in a brewery in Pittsburgh that he initially consulted on and then was offered the role once they realize the multi-faceted talent and experience he brought that led me and Paul to work together in an official capacity for the first time, as GBH signed on to the project to help define the brand and trajectory of the brewery with Paul and the Warden family, for what would become known as Cinderlands  Since then Paul has become a brewer's brewer, making precise Lagers, exquisite Saisons, as well as crowd-pleasers like their sought-after Tartshake series.  Paul's unique perspective as a brewer, and also a student and former teacher of history, gives him a view on humanity and how beer fits into it that is uncommonly balanced. There's an auteur in him of the finer elements of brewing. But there's also the practical business person who knows better than to push back against the demands of the market. In fact, rather than be mutually exclusive as so many small operators often see these seemingly opposing forces—he seems to elegantly align the two to create opportunities for himself and others that are truly satisfying as a creator.  And that's not to say that holding that line is easy. It's a position that's maintained through a constantly shifting, reflective, informed effort to navigate a very human marketplace that can be both high-minded, hype-driven, and incredibly fickle at times.  The history of beer is like the history of all things fashionable. And the present is no exception.  Paul was in town for a collaboration release with his friends at Solemn Oath, and a bit of a homecoming. So we took the moment to catch up on some of these threads and open some bottles for friends and peers at the studio. We were also finalizing plans for our latest collaborative project—Cindi's Hard Mountain Tea—which is launching at PNC park in Pittsburgh as I speak.

In Hebrews 6, the writer proceeds to establish an independent, and greater consolation and comfort for us in Christ's priesthood, based upon God's Solemn Oath to the Son, appointing Him a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. That oath by God to Christ is first recorded in Psalm 110.--God showed the heirs of the promise the immutability of His counsel to bless and save us, by confirming it by His oath.--God's counsel is immutable. It never changes. It is decided by God forever.--The purpose of God's disclosing His immutable plan of redemption, and promising redemption, and swearing by Himself to redeem His people, is declared to be our strong consolation, our comfort by God, that He will surely perform that which He determined beforehand to do for us, in saving us by Christ.--It is impossible that God should lie about His counsel and His oath to save us---Those who have believed God's Word, have laid hold of an anchor to our souls, which is embedded in the One that has entered behind the veil of the Holiest in glory. Our anchor is buried in Christ our sacrifice and our high priest, Who is now seated in the heavenly places for us.--The reason these things are our strong consolation and comfort from God is, that God cannot lie about or change His eternal counsel to save us, nor can He go back on His solemn oath to do so.--But God's oath is not primarily to us. The writer of Hebrews focuses more upon this- that the immutable oath of God to carry out His immutable counsel to save His people, was made to Christ Himself---God determined to save His people by the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus as our high priest, and He has confirmed this by His Own oath to His Son.

Today's episode is a preview of a festival coming up in Pittsburgh on July 30th called Mixed Culture. GBH is intimately involved as partners on the branding and content side of the festival—and that's in large part because the people behind it are both clients and long-time friends of ours at Cinderlands Beer Co. This festival is a sort of “coming of age” moment for their whole crew. On the back of so many big wins—launching their second and third locations, reinventing the Foederhouse to make exquisite wood aged and mixed culture beers, and taking a medal this year for Gregg, their saison, I couldn't be more proud of what these folks have accomplished. And their brewer Paul Schneider is a personal friend of mine and we both fell into beer around the same time in Chicago going to bottle shares and tagging along at breweries until we could get our foot in the door. Of all the brewers who we worked with for our Uppers & Downers festival, no one took the assignment more seriously than Paul did when he was brewing at Solemn Oath in Naperville, Illinois. He's probably made more coffee beers than any other brewer on the planet.

After first jogging with his mom in the cornfields of Indiana, he found his passion for racing and started working at a run shop in high school. After walking on to the IU Cross Country Team, he eventually graduated with a degree in marketing, and became a brand ambassador for Cliff Bar. Always heeding the call to adventure, he bought the Universal Soles Running shop from his buddy in 2008, and proceeded to create a loyal community around fun run events. With online shopping and Amazon starting to eat into his profit margins, he eventually closed the shop in 2017 and turned Universal Soles into an event based organization. The annual Burgers and Beer Fun Run was so loved by locals that it gradually took over Soldier Field, and this year has pivoted to a Twilight Trail Run edition that will take place on August 7th on the Palos Trails outside of Chicago, with big grills & partnership with craft beer company Solemn Oath. America was birthed out of a hunger to Worship God Freely and the formation of America was predicated upon the Right to do so. Matt Van Wyk is Brewmaster and Co-Founder at Alesong Brewing & Blending in Eugene, Oregon. He drops some knowledge on what it takes to use barrels as the fifth ingredient in his beers. He goes from science teacher to brewing on the side to award-winning brewer. We talk a lot about family, work ethic and the relationships that sustain us. In a first, we get to talk to one of Matt's #UnsungHospitalityHeroes, Andrew Mason, who was a middle school student of his, then an assistant brewer, now a trusted confidant. Website: alesongbrewing.com Facebook: /alesongbrewing Instagram: @alesongmatt @alesongbrewing Twitter: @alesongmatt @alesongbrewing Where were you born / raised? Wilton, Iowa First job in the industry? When, where, how old? 2001, Glen Ellyn Brewing Company. I was 28. I had been volunteering there for two years, off and on Proudest moment of your career? It has to be the 2006 World Beer Cup awards when I earned silver behind Rodenbach Crand Cru and ahead of Dogfish Head's Festina Lente. I mumbled something unintelligible to both Rudi and Sam. I'm still star struck after 20 years in the industry. Two things most people don't know about you? 1) I have two degrees in teaching and spent 6 years in education. 2) I spent much of my childhood watching Julia Child, Jaques Pepin, and Martin Yan on PBS and I think it affected my eating habits and my brewing philosophy. Food and/or drinks staples in your house? Beer, wine and Bourbon are always available, naturally. Eggs are eaten in mass quantities in my household. Words to live by? "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." and "be kind to others" Tell us about one of your #UnsungHospitalityHeroes Andrew Mason, most recently of Solemn Oath Brewing, previously at Three Floyds Brewing and prior to that, my assistant brewer at Flossmoor Station from 2005-2009. Andrew was a student in my Middle School science class and later in a HS Astronomy class. We became close with he and his family when a science fair project went awry in 1997 and it led to me homebrewing with his dad. He contacted me after college looking for a job in the industry and I had an open position. He learned professional brewing with me and that led to him later being the production manager at both Three Floyds and Solemn Oath. Not only is he a great brewer but he's one heck of a grillmaster. His family in the early days, and Andrew now, are known to host 'meat parties'. To me, the Mason's were foodies before it was cool to be a foodie. Matt Founded Alesong Brewing and Blending along with Brian and Doug Coombs in 2016. Alesong is a producer of artisan barrel aged beer and is located in wine country of the Southern Willamette valley of Oregon. Prior to founding Alesong, Matt did stints at Oregon's Oakshire Brewing and several breweries in the Chicagoland area, including Flossmoor Station Brewery where he earned Small Brewpub Brewer of the year at the 2006 at the Great American Beer Fest. When not dabbling with barrels he chases after his wife Jenni and two kids, Nick and Ella in the Mountains and Coastal region of Oregon.

This episode is a two-parter devoted to the intersection of taprooms and retailers as they increasingly find themselves in competition with each other for the limited number of customers and dollars available in their markets for craft beer. There are a number of factors that have made taprooms a newly competitive aspect of the three-tier system—or what’s left of it in some cases. Laws have been changing, the consumer experience is shifting, OG beer bars are feeling the squeeze from every bar and restaurant seemingly carrying craft beer now, and larger trends like at-home consumption, bottle shares, trading circuits, and beer tourism. It’s hard out there for a retailer right now, and it’s kind of becoming taprooms versus everybody. The purpose of this two-part series was to dig into that tension and determine if there’s a concrete principle at play, or if, like most things in craft beer, it’s more of a loose relationship-based thing where some competition is welcome, and some isn’t. Most of all: how are we going to be thinking about all this in the future? Because I think we can all agree that competition that works in the drinker’s favor is generally a good thing, but if we start losing great bars in the process, then maybe we’re not all getting what we want in the end. Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville, Illinois is the catalyst behind these episodes. As a small production brewery making right about 8,000 barrels, with an expanded taproom and a new one opening in the city of Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood, they were starting to feel the pushback from some key retail accounts who see them as competition. So they took the bold step of reaching out, inviting those accounts to brew a beer called Taproom Exclusive, and serving it anywhere but. They asked us to come along and lead a discussion around how we can maybe sort all this out productively and gain some perspective. Bavarian Lodge and Hopleaf joined in—both accounts that have carried Solemn Oath over the years, but who have been vocal about how they don’t like where things are heading. Kudos to everyone for being willing to come the the table—both figuratively and quite literally—over a beer and dig into the issue. This episode is recorded at the Hopleaf, and I’m joined by: Michael Roper, proprietor of Hopleaf Peter Rock-Tiernes of Middlebrow, who just owned a taproom in Logan Square Jay Jankowski of Maproom, just down the street from Middlebrow and Solmenn Oath’s future second taproom Eric Hobbs, sales director at Solemn Oath This is Taprooms Vs. The more of the beer world I’ve seen during my travels, the more dots I’ve been able to connect between certain kinds of breweries. Not just with the kinds of beers they make, like a Hazy IPA brewery, or a sour brewery, but broader than that—something that sort of gets to that phrase you hear so often amongst brewers” “like mindedness.” Sometimes this phrase makes me queasy, as it sounds a bit familiar in the larger context of the monoculture that plagues craft beer. But when it’s used with intent to describe a deeper set of ideas and principles, it can do a good job of describing why some brewers find a near-instant connection with each other. Sometimes it’s the branding, or the tone. Sometimes is the design of the taproom or the part of town they’re in, even in separate cities. Every small business makes thousands of different decisions on their way to becoming a brewery, and some of those decisions are more self-aware than others. But in the end, you get a sort of gestalt—a combination of factors that add up to a vibe, or a presence. Brewers can recognize each other in a second. It’s a sort of love at first sight. More often than not, this is at the root of brewing collaborations. A consummation of sorts that helps prove that initial inkling. So it is with Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville, Illinois—longtime friends of GBH—and Holy Mountain Brewing in Seattle. There’s plenty of commonality between these two beer makers on the surface. Anyone who’s been to both taprooms will see the connection. If you’ve seen the branding, you can get that attraction, too. And so it is that these two became fast friends. The team from Holy Mountain was in Chicago, making a collaboration beer with Solemn Oath, so we got them all together, along with Solemn Oath co-founder John Barley, and dug into what these two see in each other.

Slow growth is better than no growth - and it may be even better than rapid growth, as the crew at Hop Butcher for the World proves. After nearly two years of intermittent releases of their (mostly) hoppy offerings, the demand for Hop Butcher beers has surpassed all of their local peers - and few breweries deserve it more. But now that their operation has moved down to Miskatonic’s space in Darien, the canned releases are coming with more volume and frequency while not compromising their excellent quality. For this show, the guys at Hop Butcher sent us five of their more recent releases to sample and review, and we try to balance our high standards for their beers with our usual garbage arbitrary opinions. Sometimes it feels like every small craft brewery is in constant expansion—and the numbers back up that general sentiment. More capacity, bigger brewhouses, contracting out, and bringing canning lines in—there’s an endless number of dependencies when you’re building out an expanded space in the hopes of meeting demand or chasing a growing market. And on the surface, these expansions seem obvious, almost simple. Afterthoughts in a market where success still seems inevitable for many.  But behind those expansions are a thousand tiny decisions, and a few really big ones, that add up to hope and anxiety, victories and defeats, self-doubt and over-confidence. But somehow, through all those ups and downs that any small business owner is all too familiar with, you have to have the unwavering faith that it’ll all work out.  Today’s guest is John Barley of Solemn Oath. I was there when they first fired up the brewhouse in 2012. I’ve been there alongside their many phases of growth over the subsequent few years. And today, I want to bring you a story about the project that pushed them, the entire team really, to their limits. Over the past year, they’ve replaced the brewhouse, their cold storage, brought in a canning line, and even mundane things like the boiler, condenser, all the behind-the-scenes infrastructure that makes the expansion possible—an expansion that, for a while, looked like it might be too much.  But here he is, on the other side. Not unscathed, but perhaps appropriately scathed. And better off for it.
