Kristján Kristjánsson stýrir kröftugri umræðu um þjóðmálin. Í þessum þætti: Þjóðernishyggja/alþjóðamál Guðmundur Hálfdánarson, prófessor í sagnfræði Guðmundur ræðir um þjóðir og þjóðerni, hvað er það sem myndar þjóð, ógna fólksflutningar hugmyndum um samstöðu og samkennd og hvaða áhrif hefur vaxandi þjóðernishyggja, m.a. hér á landi. Evrópumál Helga Vala Helgadóttir, varaformaður Evrópuhreyfingarinnar Hjörtur J. Guðmundsson, blaðamaður Helga Vala er einlægur Evrópusinni en Hjörtur er einn talsmanna Heimssýnar sem berst gegn aðild að ESB, þau rökræða aðild að Evrópusambandinu. Stjórnmál/tollamál Diljá Mist Einarsdóttir alþingismaður Dagur B. Eggertsson alþingismaður Þau Diljá og Dagur ræða tollamál í kjölfar þess að bæði ESB og USA hafa lagt eða hyggjast leggja tolla á vörur framleiddar á Íslandi, hagsmunagæslu okkar og stöðu í framhaldinu. Vinnumarkaður Sólveig Anna Jónsdóttir, formaður Eflingar, Sólveig Anna bregst við hugmyndum dómsmálaráðherra um þrengri reglur fyrir veitingu dvalarleyfa fólks sem hingað vill koma til starfa.
Andrés Magnússon og Stefán Einar Stefánsson slá á létta strengi og kæta landsmenn með nærveru sinni í hlaðvarpi þjóðarinnar. Rætt er um einbeittan (brota)vilja ríkisstjórnarinnar sem vill troða okkur inn í ESB, óljós skilaboð utanríkisráðherra í samtölum við erlenda miðla, þögn forsætisráðherra um tollamál, rugludalla sem vilja skerða akademískt frelsi, stöðu flokka í könnunum sem og önnur málefni líðandi stundar.
Heiðar Guðjónsson og Sigríður Andersen kíkja í Þjóðmálastofuna í aðdraganda verslunarmannahelgarinnar og fara yfir allt það helsta. Við ræðum um möguleikana á olíuleit, ummæli Heiðars um að mögulega væri hægt að fella niður alla skatta á Íslandi, áherslur ríkisstjórnarinnar á sterkari tengsl við Hamas og ESB á meðan málin hér heima bíða, nýja tolla sem ESB ætlar að setja á Ísland, hvort að forsætisráðherra sé í raun að leiða ríkisstjórnina, neikvæða umfjöllun í garð ferðaþjónustunnar, gjaldmiðlamál, hvort að vinsældir ríkisstjórnarinnar séu tímabundnar eða varanlegar og margt fleira.
Last week the government said it was set to spend €100bn over the next 5 years on infrastructure. Most of that will go on housing and water but the urgency on expanding the electricity grid was highlighted when Amazon walked away from a giant project because ESB networks couldn't guarantee the power for it. Now the energy suppliers Pinergy say that demand for electricity will grow by 66% by 2050 and based on the current trajectory and that demand won't be met with adequate supply. Enda Gunnell chief executive of Pinergy joined Joe Lynam on the show.
Today on Consuming the Craft, I welcomed two of the driving forces behind Green Man Brewing Company: Joe Summers, Managing Director, and Matt Peyton, Director of Brewing. We dove deep into the world of legacy beer styles, the ebb and flow of trends in the craft beer scene, and how Green Man keeps pivoting and thriving even as the industry gets more crowded and competitive. From war stories about hay-infused brews and pumpkin beers arriving way before the harvest, to the real-world logistics of steering a brewery battleship in the wake of ever-shifting consumer preferences, this conversation was packed with insight, laughs, and a couple of surprise bottles (including some soju in a plastic liter bottle). We explored everything from experimental IPAs to the comforting return of classic ESBs and sessionable lagers, not to mention what it will take to bring Asheville's South Slope back to full vibrancy. Joe Summers has nearly two decades of experience in the beverage industry, steering Green Man Brewing through thick and thin as Managing Director. Matt Peyton, whose background is in civil and environmental engineering, has spent almost every waking moment of the last twelve years climbing from delivery driver all the way up to Director of Brewing. Both are passionate advocates for beer brewed with balance, intention, and a healthy respect for tradition—even as they chase after the occasional trend or wacky adjunct. "Brewery is not an F1 car, it's a battleship. And it takes a long time to turn it and move it in a direction." ~Matt Peyton Today on Consuming the Craft:· Trends in the craft beer industry are cyclical; legacy beer styles, such as ESB, IPA, and Porter, are making a comeback as trends shift from fads to classics.· Steering a brewery toward a new trend requires years of planning, from label approval to production schedules; you can't just pivot overnight.· The “haze craze” and IPA experimentation are still very much alive, but there's growing consumer interest in sessionable, lower-ABV beers and clean lagers.· Legacy brands, dependable classics consumers know and trust, help breweries stay resilient when distributors prioritize trendier items like hard seltzers.· Economic uncertainty means more people are reaching for tried-and-true classic beers, rather than taking a chance on expensive new releases.· The Asheville craft scene is recovering after a tough year, and both breweries and locals are eager to welcome back visitors and celebrate a return to normal.· Experimentation isn't dead, surprise tastings during the conversation included a robust Armagnac and a surprisingly smooth (and subtle) Korean soju.· Food, beer, and community remain at the heart of what breweries like Green Man do, whether its chili made with porter or a scotch egg and a pint at Jack the Wood. A listener has reached out to the show to express their frustration over ongoing delays to the move-in date for a newly purchased home in Sligo. Their experience raises questions about the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders, such as ESB, Irish Water, developers and estate agents in setting, and repeatedly missing, realistic delivery timelines…Peter and Fiona join Andrea to discuss.

Við segjum fréttirnar með okkar lagi á Samstöðinni, klukkan sjö þegar engar fréttir eru í Ríkissjónvarpinu. Magnea Marinósdóttir, alþjóðastjórnmálafræðingur og Jasmina Vajzovic stjórnmálafræðingur ræða uppgang hægri öfga hópa á Íslandi og Evrópu, meðal annars Skildi Íslands. Dóra Magnúsdóttir samskiptastjóri, Magnús Árni Skjöld Magnússon prófessor og Klemens Ólafur Þrastarson fyrrverandi starfsmaður ESB og blaðamaður, einnig þekktur sem tónlistarmaðurinn Klói, allt ákafir Evrópusinnar, segja okkur frá hvers vegna Ísland ætti að ganga í Evrópusambandið. Í lokin heyrum við í mótmælendum við utanríkisráðuneytið þar sem félagið Ísland-Palestína mótmælti aðgerðarleysi íslenskra stjórnvalda frammi fyrir þjóðarmorðinu á Gaza.
Offshore wind farms play an increasing role in Ireland's transition to a zero-carbon economy. But what effect do they have on wildlife? The ESB has developed a dedicated Marine Mammal Observer programme and Terry Flanagan went to meet Jo Green (observer) and Niru Dorrian (Senior Ecology Co-ordinator) in Dublin Bay.

A new mobile app, ESB Networks AR: The Story of Electricity, developed by Walton Institute at South East Technological University, was recently launched during the annual ESB Networks' Apprentice Network Technician of the Year. This innovative app offers an interactive, educational experience that brings the history and infrastructure of electricity in Ireland to life using cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) technology. The app also allows users to explore the ESB Networks Training Centre's live field in Portlaoise through a guided AR tour. Onsite visitors can use the app to access multimedia content, presented by a virtual tour guide, that explains the real-world electrical equipment and infrastructure they see around them. For those accessing the app, ESB Networks AR offers a rich multimedia journey through the evolution of electricity in Ireland - from generation to transmission, distribution, and final delivery to homes and businesses across the country, both urban and rural. The project was delivered through a research and development collaboration between the ICS Technology Gateway at Walton Institute and ESB Networks. Stephen Barnes, Senior Project Manager of the Extended Reality (XR) team at Walton Institute, said: "We're delighted to launch an app that combines education, storytelling, and technology. It's an exciting new way to engage people with the story of electricity and the important work ESB Networks does every day. As a former electronic engineer, I hope that this will not just give users a better understanding of the great work done by ESB Networks but also inspire the next generation of apprentices." David Harrington, Training Design and Systems Manager at ESB Networks, added: "This app reflects ESB Networks commitment to innovation and education. It enhances how we engage with visitors, apprentices, and the public, offering a hands-on, immersive understanding of the infrastructure that powers Ireland." This app is more than a tour. It serves as an educational tool that demystifies the fundamentals of electricity and showcases the vital work of ESB Networks. Schools, training centres, and colleges can also benefit from its use as an engaging introduction to electrical systems and infrastructure. One of the standout features is a virtual tour guide, created using advanced 3D scanning and facial animation technologies. Users can also experience immersive 360° footage from a technician's climb up a transmission tower, offering a unique and thrilling perspective on the work carried out by ESB professionals. The ICS Technology Gateway Programme is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27.
Daar gaan we eens induiken. Daar doken twee economen in.
DP Energy has partnered with ESB to develop Lyra Wind Farm in Co. Mayo, a renewable energy project with the potential to generate up to 100MW of clean power. Located approximately 7km southeast of Westport, 2.2km southeast of Aghagower Village and 9.5km west of Ballintubber Village, the proposed area of development is situated in the townlands of Cordarragh South, Corveagh Upper and Teevinish West. The majority of the proposed turbine area is located at an elevation of between 100m and 200m above sea level and will generate enough energy to power up to 70,914 homes on an annual basis. The design of the proposed project is at an early stage and is following an iterative approach that will be guided by any potential environmental impacts, as advised by third-party technical experts. The wind farm, once operational, will only occupy a small portion of the overall site area - approximately 4% - allowing many of the existing land uses, such as farming and biodiversity management, to continue alongside the project. DP Energy has collaborated with ESB previously to develop Cappawhite Wind Farm, a 51MW onshore wind project in Co. Tipperary, located at the southernmost extent of the mountain range known as Hollyford Hills. DP Energy also previously sold its operating and pipeline projects to ESB in 2008. Simon De Pietro, Director and CEO at DP Energy Group, says: "We are delighted to be working alongside ESB to develop Lyra Wind Farm. This project has the potential to deliver substantial benefits to the local community while fostering local employment and enterprise. Having previously achieved excellent results working with ESB, we look forward to building on this strong partnership and using it as a foundation for future projects across Ireland and the UK." Jim Dollard, Executive Director, Generation and Trading at ESB, says: "At ESB, we are progressing a pipeline of projects and acquisitions, including initiatives with our trusted partners, to deliver our Net Zero by 2040 strategy. Building on our previous successes, we are delighted to partner once again with DP Energy on the proposed Lyra wind farm in Co Mayo. By leveraging our shared values and combined expertise, we believe the Lyra project will deliver significant benefits for the community, the environment and Ireland's net-zero energy commitments. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure the project is a success." Visit the Lyra Wind Farm website for more information on the project.

ESB is supporting Ireland's offshore wind ambitions by rolling out its third consecutive bespoke Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) training programme. MMOs are specialist environmental consultants responsible for monitoring marine megafauna such as whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and basking sharks, during industry operations. They assist developers comply with environmental regulations and guidelines, while the data collected by MMOs aids in evaluating the effectiveness of mitigation measures. The aim of the programme is to support the development of marine ecology education and skills, helping successful applicants at the early stages of their careers in the marine environmental profession. It is open to graduates, final-year undergraduates and postgraduate students who are studying or working in marine science or related disciplines. Since its inception in 2023, 11 participants have successfully completed the programme. Speaking about the success of the programme to date, Niru Dorrian, Senior Offshore Ecology Coordinator at ESB, said: "Offshore wind will play a crucial role in helping Ireland achieve its climate targets, and we need to invest in people now to ensure we have the right skills and expertise for all elements of our projects. As leaders in the transition to clean energy, it is important for developers like ESB to support the marine industry, and in particular, future MMOs. Collaboration is key to a net-zero energy future, and we are grateful to the academic and industry organisations supporting our programme." The programme is endorsed by The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the Marine Mammal Observer Association (MMOA). The training comprises a mix of both classroom and field training over the course of three months which includes an offshore survival course at the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) in Cork. Thomas Power, a 2023 programme participant, says the initiative has helped his career: "The ESB MMO training programme was the perfect first step to a career in marine mammal and environmental mitigation. It opens the door in what can sometimes be a difficult career to start out in. The initial training and certifications required for MMO work are costly, and the ESB funding allowed me to commit fully without the financial worry often attached. I would absolutely recommend this programme to anyone thinking of a career in marine mammal mitigation, and if awarded to fully utilise the amazing opportunity this programme offers." Interested applicants should contact mmotraining@esb.ie for more information.
Staðan á Gaza og aðgerðir Evrópusambandsins var umræðuefni á ráðherrafundi EES ríkjanna í Brussel í dag, þar sem Kaja Kallas utanríkismálastjóri ESB var meðal þátttakenda. Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir tók þátt í þessum fundi; hún segir það ánægjulegt að aðildarríki ESB séu að ná samstöðu um harðari aðgerðir gagnvart Ísrael. Viljayfirlýsing um nánara samstarf á sviði utanríkis og öryggismála var einnig staðfest á þessum fundi. Björn Malmquist fréttamaður ræddi við Þorgerði Katrínu í Brussel í dag. Peningastefnunefnd Seðlabankans lækkaði stýrivexti í dag um 0,25 prósentustig, úr 7,75 prósent í 7,5. Þórarinn G. Pétursson varaseðlabankastjóri segir að verðbólgan þurfi að hjaðna í sumar til að hægt verði að halda vaxtalækkunarferlinu áfram. Horfur í efnahagsmálum séu góðar en óvissa á alþjóðamörkuðum út af tollastríði gæti sett strik í reikninginn. Menningarferðaþjónusta er nú í fyrsta sinn formlega skilgreind sem hluti af ferðamálastefnu stjórnvalda enda er menning talin afar mikilvægur þáttur í ferðaþjónustu og ferðamenn sem hingað koma njóta íslenskrar menningar með ýmsum hætti um allt land.

We first became aware of the story at the heart of this episode over three years ago. Details were scarce at the time, but we knew that heat casualties had been a major issue for units at Defener Pacific... except for one company that was completely unaffected. And as it turned out, that company had been doing afternoon physical training to deliberately prepare for the heat (plus leveraging H2F experts to optimize the training). Our guest for this episode was the commander of that company at the time, and he provides a ton of insight into how good training management left his company with zero heat casualties while the battalion experienced 45. MAJ Christian Wardynski is an Instructor of Economics in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy at West Point, which he also graduated from in 2014. After graduating Engineer BOLC, Chris served in the 54th BEB, 173rd IBCT in Vicenza, Italy as a Light Equipment PL, Sapper PL, and BN Air Officer. Most recently, he served as the Company Commander for Bravo Company, 37th Engineer Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from West Point, a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Chicago where he also served as a fellow at the Pearson Institute. Chris and his wife, Jackie, have four daughters. He also provided a bunch of clarifying notes that we'll share here:He said the DoD vs. VA alignment is a Principal-Agent Problem, but as he described it, it would probably fit the definition of a negative externality better - the DoD's decisions to "overuse"/ or under-rehabilitate soldiers impose uncompensated long-term healthcare costs on the VA (and thus the taxpayer); same for the current commander not considering the cost savings of proper rehabilitation/physical resiliency of soldiers for the next commander. Regardless, both principal-agent issue and externality issue apply. You can tell by this correction that he's a true econ instructor...For additional context on the heat acclimation they started in May 2021, they had Company STX the second week of June and he initially started reverse cycle PT to see if it'd help soldiers with performance during the STX event. They executed 9x ESB-style lanes focused on individual soldier and engineer tasks, and covered over 30 miles under load in 24 hours. As a bit of risk management for the event, he mandated that all soldiers had to eat at least the main meal of the MRE and a side, or three sides total if not eating the main meal, as well as the entire salt/electrolyte packet every four hours during the event. If they found any soldier who ate less than the required amount, it would result in a summarized article 15 (if there were no extenuating circumstances). It was on the TLs to decide if they needed to eat more frequently and if they wanted to eat on the move or not. Team leaders led their own teams movement through all the lanes and to each station. This provided a great opportunity for them to exercise some initiative and leadership. Surprisingly, zero heat casualties during this crucible event for the ~80 soldiers that completed it, despite a peak ~95 degree heat index in that timeframe. Regarding Defender Pacific, when he arrived to his company assembly area after the jump, his soldiers looked utterly unphased and appeared completely fresh. The BN TF, however, had about 45 heat casualties by that time. After the BN TF mission was complete, they had a 7 mi ruck to the training area where they'd rest overnight, and his soldiers handled the movement without any issue whatsoever. He did note that they did not have a very hard follow on mission, whereas most other companies in the BN TF had some pretty physically arduous movements/follow-on missions.
ESB is once again running guided tours at Ardnacrusha Power Station in Co Clare this summer, offering the public a rare opportunity to explore one of Ireland's most significant engineering landmarks - free of charge. School group tours will take place from 22 May to 30 June with public tours beginning July 1 through to 5 September 2025 (weekdays only). Each tour provides a fun, engaging and informative experience, tracing the story of electricity in Ireland from the station's origins in the 1920s to ESB's modern-day commitment to renewable energy and reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2040. Brendan Shine, Plant Manager at Ardnacrusha, said: "All the staff working here at Ardnacrusha are delighted to once again open the gates of the station to school groups and the public so they can get an insight into the workings of our great station, and the contribution it has made to the country's economic and social history. Our guides will ensure this is a memorable experience for all and we encourage anyone interested to book early." Visitors on the 90-minute guided tour will learn how Ardnacrusha revolutionised life in Ireland and continues to play a vital role in ESB's sustainability strategy. Participants will also gain insight into some of the cutting-edge renewable energy technologies being adopted by the organisation. Ardnacrusha Tour Details: School Group Tours: 22 May - 30 June 2025 Public Tours: 1 July - 5 September 2025 Days: Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) Duration: Approx. 90 minutes Group Size: Up to 30 people Bookings are essential and can be made at www.esb.ie/ardnacrushatours, where visitors can also find accessibility information and check available dates. Commissioned in 1929, Ardnacrusha was the centrepiece of the Shannon hydro-electric scheme - a visionary project that symbolised Irish independence and industrial ambition. Constructed by 5,000 workers over four years, the scheme cost over IR£5 million, the equivalent of 20% of Ireland's GDP at the time. With an initial capacity of 86 megawatts, it was enough to power the entire country. Today, Ardnacrusha remains operational, contributing around 2% of Ireland's total electricity supply. Visitor Feedback: "I'm a mom of three kids - 14, 11, and 6 - and we all found the tour incredibly interesting. We were actually disappointed when it ended - we wanted it to go on longer! The guides were very knowledgeable and answered every question with ease." "A great tour. Very informative, guides are very knowledgeable on all aspects of the tour. Witty, funny, and interactive. There was a wide diverse age group on our tour and all was catered for. It starts on time, don't feel rushed throughout the tour. Highly recommend this experience." "Bitter" Truths, Big Beers, and Bold MovesThis week, we crack open a triple dose of hop-fueled commentary, brewery gossip, and World Beer Cup bombshells. We even got a little salty—literally. In Beers of the Week we pay tribute to a fallen Georgia brewer with Jekyll Brewing's Big Creek Kölsch. Jekyll, a longtime staple with both supporters and haters, is set to shut down all locations on Mother's Day. We dove deep into their history, rise, Kickstarter roots, and the harsh economics of brewery expansion in a post-industrial park taproom era. Then came the ESB talk. What the heck is an ESB anyway? Brian broke down the style—medium malt, medium hop, and no, it's not actually that bitter. We dug into the surprising World Beer Cup win: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale taking gold in the American ESB category. Wait, what? Pale Ale is an ESB now? According to the new guidelines, apparently so. The lines blur, styles evolve, and Brian drops knowledge.Speaking of the World Beer Cup, Georgia showed up big: 6 breweries, 9 medals. New Realm, Bold Monk, Wild Heaven, and others brought home serious hardware. We raised a glass to our local heroes and called out a few surprise absences (no Creature Comforts?).Economic chatter followed, and for once, the news wasn't all doom and gloom. The U.S. beer industry contributed over $470 billion in 2024, thanks to jobs, taxes, and of course, your favorite six-packs. But challenges remain—Tilray teeters on delisting, and even success stories sometimes mask hard decisions behind closed taproom doors. And finally, Tecate went weird: a salty light lager made with Gulf of Mexico water, available only on a floating bar off the Yucatan. No, really. So whether you're crushing cream ales with bourbon chasers, debating beer style semantics, or lamenting your favorite brewery's closure, this week's episode has you covered. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Ohio educators want professional development opportunities that give them the tools to be the best educators possible for their students. But, too often, school districts prescribe PD that doesn't feel like a valuable use of anyone's time. Ohio's Educator Standards Board set out to change that by making the state's Professional Learning Standards more user-friendly and more useful. Educator Standards Board member Eugene Mach walks us through the process and the changes that are in the pipeline for educators around the state.SEE THE CURRENT STANDARDS | If you'd like to look at the previously adopted Standards for Professional Development to see how they compare to the new Professional Learning Standards as proposed, click here to read the full document. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE NEW STANDARDS | The Educator Standards Board voted to move their newly developed Professional Learning Standards forward to the State Board of Education for consideration in March. The Professional Learning Standards document is not on the agenda for the State Board of Education's April meeting. Check the State Board of Education's webpage to keep tabs on when the document moves forward and to see the latest version of the document under consideration. Please note, the Educator Standards Board voted on March 7, 2025, to move forward this version of the Professional Learning Standards without the words 'equity' or 'inclusion,' despite the objections of several ESB members, including Eugene Mach, who is featured in this episode. This episode was recorded before that vote took place, so discussions about those changes are not included in the conversation you hear here. Kristrún Frostadóttir forsætisráðherra ræddi í dag við forystu Evrópusambandsins um tollamál og hvernig Ísland gæti komist hjá því að lenda á milli í tollastríði Evrópu og Bandaríkjanna. On EP298 we talked about the roll JT is on. We discussed the PP, Simon Benoit's struggles and who we have the most confidence in for a game 1 start in net. Big thanks to The Liquor Planet for the ESB from Salt Spring Brewing Co
We've talked about the Super 8 Empire Strikes Back, we've talked about the Story of Empire on record, we've talked about the 70mm version, the mono version, and the 35mm version but this week we're talking about one the wildest versions of Empire ever - THE KENNER GIVE A SHOW VERSION. This is a toy slide show interpretation of ESB that takes some interesting choices on how to rearrange the story while showing off some incredible illustrations based on the film. And, to spice things up, we made a full 12-minute audio version based on the structure seen in the slides. It's an episode 3 months in the making and it'll change the way you think of Empire or at least the way you look at slide shows of Empire from 1980! So get a hose to empty out your dirty water, celebrate the love and listen today! In today's podcast, we say goodbye to Pocha, who had only a short time at the sanctuary. Her death, though sudden, was not entirely surprising, as there had been signs for a long time that something wasn't quite right. Kat and Scott take us back to October 2022 to share Pocha's final days and her passing. We also discuss how Guillermina and the other elephants reacted to her death, as well as the broader topic of elephants' capacity to mourn. Despite the sadness, there is an overwhelming sense of gratitude among Scott, Kat, and the entire team at ESB that Pocha lived long enough to witness her daughter discovering her birthright of freedom, forming new friendships, and becoming part of a herd. Pocha left this world in peace, knowing Guillermina was in the best care possible. Visit Pocha's memorial page. Email: We'd love to hear from you podcast@globalelephants.org Who we are: Global Sanctuary for Elephants exists to create vast, safe spaces for captive elephants, where they are able to heal physically and emotionally. There are elephants around the world in need of sanctuary, but too few places exist to be able to care for even a fraction of the elephants. International support is necessary to build sanctuaries for elephants in need of rescue and rehabilitation. Our pilot project is Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, currently home to six female Asian elephants.
