Reverse Cycle PT for Heat Acclimation with MAJ Christian Wardynski

We first became aware of the story at the heart of this episode over three years ago. Details were scarce at the time, but we knew that heat casualties had been a major issue for units at Defener Pacific... except for one company that was completely unaffected. And as it turned out, that company had been doing afternoon physical training to deliberately prepare for the heat (plus leveraging H2F experts to optimize the training). Our guest for this episode was the commander of that company at the time, and he provides a ton of insight into how good training management left his company with zero heat casualties while the battalion experienced 45. MAJ Christian Wardynski is an Instructor of Economics in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy at West Point, which he also graduated from in 2014. After graduating Engineer BOLC, Chris served in the 54th BEB, 173rd IBCT in Vicenza, Italy as a Light Equipment PL, Sapper PL, and BN Air Officer. Most recently, he served as the Company Commander for Bravo Company, 37th Engineer Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from West Point, a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Chicago where he also served as a fellow at the Pearson Institute. Chris and his wife, Jackie, have four daughters. He also provided a bunch of clarifying notes that we'll share here:He said the DoD vs. VA alignment is a Principal-Agent Problem, but as he described it, it would probably fit the definition of a negative externality better - the DoD's decisions to "overuse"/ or under-rehabilitate soldiers impose uncompensated long-term healthcare costs on the VA (and thus the taxpayer); same for the current commander not considering the cost savings of proper rehabilitation/physical resiliency of soldiers for the next commander. Regardless, both principal-agent issue and externality issue apply. You can tell by this correction that he's a true econ instructor...For additional context on the heat acclimation they started in May 2021, they had Company STX the second week of June and he initially started reverse cycle PT to see if it'd help soldiers with performance during the STX event. They executed 9x ESB-style lanes focused on individual soldier and engineer tasks, and covered over 30 miles under load in 24 hours. As a bit of risk management for the event, he mandated that all soldiers had to eat at least the main meal of the MRE and a side, or three sides total if not eating the main meal, as well as the entire salt/electrolyte packet every four hours during the event. If they found any soldier who ate less than the required amount, it would result in a summarized article 15 (if there were no extenuating circumstances). It was on the TLs to decide if they needed to eat more frequently and if they wanted to eat on the move or not. Team leaders led their own teams movement through all the lanes and to each station. This provided a great opportunity for them to exercise some initiative and leadership. Surprisingly, zero heat casualties during this crucible event for the ~80 soldiers that completed it, despite a peak ~95 degree heat index in that timeframe. Regarding Defender Pacific, when he arrived to his company assembly area after the jump, his soldiers looked utterly unphased and appeared completely fresh. The BN TF, however, had about 45 heat casualties by that time. After the BN TF mission was complete, they had a 7 mi ruck to the training area where they'd rest overnight, and his soldiers handled the movement without any issue whatsoever. He did note that they did not have a very hard follow on mission, whereas most other companies in the BN TF had some pretty physically arduous movements/follow-on missions.

ESB is once again running guided tours at Ardnacrusha Power Station in Co Clare this summer, offering the public a rare opportunity to explore one of Ireland's most significant engineering landmarks - free of charge. School group tours will take place from 22 May to 30 June with public tours beginning July 1 through to 5 September 2025 (weekdays only). Each tour provides a fun, engaging and informative experience, tracing the story of electricity in Ireland from the station's origins in the 1920s to ESB's modern-day commitment to renewable energy and reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2040. Brendan Shine, Plant Manager at Ardnacrusha, said: "All the staff working here at Ardnacrusha are delighted to once again open the gates of the station to school groups and the public so they can get an insight into the workings of our great station, and the contribution it has made to the country's economic and social history. Our guides will ensure this is a memorable experience for all and we encourage anyone interested to book early." Visitors on the 90-minute guided tour will learn how Ardnacrusha revolutionised life in Ireland and continues to play a vital role in ESB's sustainability strategy. Participants will also gain insight into some of the cutting-edge renewable energy technologies being adopted by the organisation. Ardnacrusha Tour Details: School Group Tours: 22 May - 30 June 2025 Public Tours: 1 July - 5 September 2025 Days: Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) Duration: Approx. 90 minutes Group Size: Up to 30 people Bookings are essential and can be made at www.esb.ie/ardnacrushatours, where visitors can also find accessibility information and check available dates. Commissioned in 1929, Ardnacrusha was the centrepiece of the Shannon hydro-electric scheme - a visionary project that symbolised Irish independence and industrial ambition. Constructed by 5,000 workers over four years, the scheme cost over IR£5 million, the equivalent of 20% of Ireland's GDP at the time. With an initial capacity of 86 megawatts, it was enough to power the entire country. Today, Ardnacrusha remains operational, contributing around 2% of Ireland's total electricity supply. Visitor Feedback: "I'm a mom of three kids - 14, 11, and 6 - and we all found the tour incredibly interesting. We were actually disappointed when it ended - we wanted it to go on longer! The guides were very knowledgeable and answered every question with ease." "A great tour. Very informative, guides are very knowledgeable on all aspects of the tour. Witty, funny, and interactive. There was a wide diverse age group on our tour and all was catered for. It starts on time, don't feel rushed throughout the tour. Highly recommend this experience." "Bitter" Truths, Big Beers, and Bold MovesThis week, we crack open a triple dose of hop-fueled commentary, brewery gossip, and World Beer Cup bombshells. We even got a little salty—literally. In Beers of the Week we pay tribute to a fallen Georgia brewer with Jekyll Brewing's Big Creek Kölsch. Jekyll, a longtime staple with both supporters and haters, is set to shut down all locations on Mother's Day. We dove deep into their history, rise, Kickstarter roots, and the harsh economics of brewery expansion in a post-industrial park taproom era. Then came the ESB talk. What the heck is an ESB anyway? Brian broke down the style—medium malt, medium hop, and no, it's not actually that bitter. We dug into the surprising World Beer Cup win: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale taking gold in the American ESB category. Wait, what? Pale Ale is an ESB now? According to the new guidelines, apparently so. The lines blur, styles evolve, and Brian drops knowledge.Speaking of the World Beer Cup, Georgia showed up big: 6 breweries, 9 medals. New Realm, Bold Monk, Wild Heaven, and others brought home serious hardware. We raised a glass to our local heroes and called out a few surprise absences (no Creature Comforts?).Economic chatter followed, and for once, the news wasn't all doom and gloom. The U.S. beer industry contributed over $470 billion in 2024, thanks to jobs, taxes, and of course, your favorite six-packs. But challenges remain—Tilray teeters on delisting, and even success stories sometimes mask hard decisions behind closed taproom doors. And finally, Tecate went weird: a salty light lager made with Gulf of Mexico water, available only on a floating bar off the Yucatan. No, really. So whether you're crushing cream ales with bourbon chasers, debating beer style semantics, or lamenting your favorite brewery's closure, this week's episode has you covered. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! The European Green Deal was launched in 2019 to make Europe the world's first climate neutral and resilient economy, and to decouple economic growth from resource use. Six years later, the ambition has become even more important for Europe, and for the world, but the global context has considerably changed. In his address to the IIEA, Director General Vandenberghe explains the relevance of the Green Deal and how it will be taken forward, in Europe and internationally, amid rapidly changing and increasingly volatile global circumstances. This event is part of the IIEA's REthink Energy series, organised in partnership with ESB. Speaker bio: Kurt Vandenberghe was appointed Director General of DG CLIMA in January 2023. From December 2019 to January 2023, he was the Green Deal and Health Advisor to President Ursula von der Leyen. Previously, he was Acting Director for Research & Innovation Outreach, Director for Policy & Programming, and Director for Climate action and resource efficiency at DG Research and Innovation. He also served in the Cabinet of Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin (1999-2004), and as Head of the Cabinet of Janez Potočnik, who was Commissioner for Research and Innovation (2004-2009) and subsequently for Environment (from 2010). Mr Vandenburghe joined the European Commission in 1996 as co-ordinator of the Commission's Intermodal Transport Task Force and of the Transport Research Programme. Before entering the Commission, Mr Vandenberghe worked as a manager at Ernst & Young Association Management, where he set up, managed and represented international trade associations. He holds a degree in French and Italian literature from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), a degree in Public and International Affairs from the University Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), and a MA in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Ohio educators want professional development opportunities that give them the tools to be the best educators possible for their students. But, too often, school districts prescribe PD that doesn't feel like a valuable use of anyone's time. Ohio's Educator Standards Board set out to change that by making the state's Professional Learning Standards more user-friendly and more useful. Educator Standards Board member Eugene Mach walks us through the process and the changes that are in the pipeline for educators around the state.SEE THE CURRENT STANDARDS | If you'd like to look at the previously adopted Standards for Professional Development to see how they compare to the new Professional Learning Standards as proposed, click here to read the full document. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE NEW STANDARDS | The Educator Standards Board voted to move their newly developed Professional Learning Standards forward to the State Board of Education for consideration in March. The Professional Learning Standards document is not on the agenda for the State Board of Education's April meeting. Check the State Board of Education's webpage to keep tabs on when the document moves forward and to see the latest version of the document under consideration. Please note, the Educator Standards Board voted on March 7, 2025, to move forward this version of the Professional Learning Standards without the words 'equity' or 'inclusion,' despite the objections of several ESB members, including Eugene Mach, who is featured in this episode. A Decade After the Paris Agreement: Global Progress and Challenges in Clean Energy Transitions

Ten years after the historic climate agreement reached at COP21 in Paris, considerable progress has been made in areas ranging from energy efficiency and renewables deployment to electric vehicles and heat pumps. However, this progress is well below that required to deliver on the goals in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, and investment in clean energy remains uneven. As political headwinds increase, Brian Motherway considers what the past decade has taught us in terms of global engagement on climate and clean energy, and what we have learned in terms of engaging citizens and societies in the vital project of clean energy transitions. This event is part of the IIEA's REthink Energy series, organised in partnership with ESB, Ireland's state-owned electricity company. Speaker bio: Brian Motherway is Head of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Inclusive Transitions at the International Energy Agency. He oversees analytical and outreach programmes supporting energy efficiency globally. He also leads IEA's work with governments on people-centred policymaking, addressing issues such as skills, inclusion and fairness in clean energy policies. Prior to joining the IEA, Brian was Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.

A recent survey highlights strong parental support for STEM education, with 80% of parents willing to back their child's participation in extracurricular STEM activities. In addition, over half (54%) of the surveyed parents actively encourage their children to pursue an interest in STEM subjects. These figures are part of a survey conducted by Red C Research and released by ESB to mark the start of ESB Science Blast 2025. The first showcase events are taking place in RDS Dublin from Monday 3rd to Thursday 6th March 2025. ESB Science Blast, an RDS led initiative, is a free educational programme which actively encourages child-led investigation and scientific discovery. This non-competitive initiative aims to address inequities in STEM education by ensuring equal access for all students, with a 50/50 gender participation and a core focus on DEIS schools and Gaelscoileanna participation. Parents attitudes to STEM In the survey, almost half (48%) of parents with primary school-aged children stated they are satisfied with the STEM learning opportunities in the classroom. A regional disparity does exist as 40% of parents based in Dublin feel their child's school offers adequate STEM support compared to 33% of parents outside of Dublin. Overall, STEM ranks third in importance among school subjects, underscoring the need for greater awareness and advocacy in this area. STEM Career Opportunities and Understanding of STEM The survey also sheds light on perceptions of STEM career opportunities. Three-quarters (74%) of adults believe that a career in STEM would offer good job prospects. Yet only 35% are familiar with the career opportunities associated with STEM. There is a gender divide in perceptions of equal career opportunities in STEM, with 53% of men and 44% of women agreeing that such opportunities exist regardless of gender. The survey also reveals a gap in understanding regarding the term 'STEM', with 58% of participants admitting they do not have a clear grasp of the term. Commitment to STEM Reaffirming their commitment to fostering STEM education, ESB and the RDS today announce a five-year extension to their partnership of ESB Science Blast. Since 2019, ESB Science Blast has engaged over 70,000 pupils from all 32 counties, inspiring primary school pupils to explore the world around them and develop skills for the future, such as communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and curiosity. Commenting on the survey results and sponsorship renewal, Marguerite Sayers, Deputy Chief Executive, ESB said: "ESB Science Blast has been a transformative experience for thousands of students across Ireland. Supporting ESB Science Blast is one way we help nurture a diverse talent pool and encourage children to see the endless possibilities a career in STEM can offer. We are proud to extend our partnership with the RDS and continue our mission to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders, "The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the students is truly inspiring. Every year, the vast array of projects highlights the curiosity of primary school children as they investigate the science behind simple but intriguing questions. We look forward to welcoming students and their teachers to ESB Science Blast 2025". The positive and significant impact of ESB Science Blast is evident in the positive feedback from both pupils and teachers in an external evaluation study conducted by RDS. An impressive 71% of pupils reported improved teamwork skills, while 86% of teachers noted enhanced presentation skills in the classroom. The programme has also sparked a greater interest in STEM careers, with 65% of pupils expressing a desire to pursue a future in the field. Commenting on the partnership, Niamh De Loughry, Deputy Chief Executive Foundation said: "ESB Science Blast exemplifies our unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and addressing critical societal needs. As a cornerstone of our Science and Technology programme, this initiati...

26,000 premises across Clare remain without power as extensive restoration efforts continuing across the county. At the peak of Storm Éowyn, 44,000 premises were left in the dark, with ESB crews able to restore power to 14,000 homes by this morning. Its's hoped that a further 4,000 restorations will take place by nightfall, with customers in Scariff, Kildysart, Ballymaley, Barefield and Corofin expected to see power return this evening. Outages are expected to seen into early next week and have had knock on effects countywide with both water and broadband supply impacted. ESB Technical Manager, Michael Sammin, says the extensive damage caused by the storm has significantly hampered attempts to restore power.

Cleanup efforts are continuing across Clare following Storm Éowyn. Last night over 30,000 homes, farms and businesses remained without power for a second day following one of the most severe weather events the county has seen. At the height of the storm, Shannon Airport recorded gusts of 137 Kilometres an hour, while over 44,000 premises in Clare were left without electricity. At lunchtime yesterday as the weather alert expired this number reduced to 37,000 and as of this morning power has been restored to 14,000 premises. ESB crews were out again at first light this morning with the assistance of helicopter crews to identify major damages and outages. ESB Technical Manager, Michael Sammin, says additional crews have been deployed to help restore power to priority areas of the network, which will aid in wider restoration efforts which will continue through the weekend.

I love beer flights. One of the things that makes craft beer so much fun is its sheer variety of styles, interpretations of those styles, and ways of using those styles for flavor experimentation. A flight is an opportunity to explore. A flight board might have an Abbey Dubbel, a Munich Dunkel, an ESB, and a Biere de Garde, taking you on a sensory trip to Belgium, Germany, England, and France a few ounces of beer at a time. Flights aren't without their critics—and valid criticisms—but at their best they represent curiosity, excitement, and joy, all qualities craft beer needs right now as it weathers its current market challenges. Why am I talking about flights? Because today we're talking with the king of beer flights, Joel Geier. Joel runs the @brewery_travels Instagram and Twitter accounts and is the author of the new book Flights Across America: A Brewery Lover's Journey, chronicling his beer adventures to over 1,300 breweries across all 50 states. That's an incredible number, meaning Joel has probably visited one in every six or seven breweries in the entire country. And at as many of those breweries as allow it, he's ordered a flight. In the book, Joel gives tips on beer travel, provides hundreds of brewery recommendations, and reminds us how much fun beer is supposed to be.In our conversation, Joel and I discuss our love of flights, how he keeps track of his journeys and the beers and breweries along the way, and some of his favorite stops from his beer voyages. There's been a lot of bad news in craft beer lately, but this conversation between two beer lovers is a chance to rediscover some of the excitement that got us into craft beer in the first place. Thanks for listening!
