# 111. Identiteitscrisis + afscheid nemen van een oude identiteit.

IN THE POCKET PODCAST with Lou Niestadt

Hey daar lieve luisteraar, Lou hier. De zgn IDENTITY DESTABILISATION OF THE OLD REFERENCE SYSTEM.

Oh lieve luisteraar, Lou hier. Vanuit Miracle Town in Costa Rica. Rise UP!

Episode 22 of Matt Likes Beer focuses on one of Matt's all-time favorite beer styles: the Strong Bitter. The featured beer is Trooper, the iconic Iron Maiden collaboration brewed by Robinsons Brewery in Cheshire, England, a beer Matt has been drinking—and defending—for years. Matt opens by clarifying a common misconception: while many drinkers refer to beers like this as “ESBs,” that name is technically reserved for Fuller's ESB. Under BJCP guidelines, Trooper is properly evaluated as 11C Strong Bitter, the strongest subcategory within the British Bitter family—though still very much a low-ABV, balance-driven beer. The episode explores Matt's long history with Trooper, including how its rarity and style alone made it an instant purchase when he first encountered it years ago. That history leads into a fascinating discovery: the vast global Iron Maiden beer lineup, brewed with multiple partners worldwide and spanning everything from lagers and IPAs to stouts, sake pilsners, and imperial beers—far beyond the single Trooper label most fans recognize. Using BJCP 11C Strong Bitter guidelines, Matt conducts a full judging breakdown, highlighting the beer's brilliant clarity, deep copper color, caramel-forward malt profile, restrained earthy hop character, and deceptively dry finish. While the beer hits many stylistic markers, excess sweetness and slightly muted bitterness hold it back in competition terms, resulting in a final score of 34 out of 50 (Very Good). As with many episodes, Matt emphasizes the distinction between judging to style and drinking for enjoyment. Despite the lower-than-expected score, he makes it clear that Trooper remains a beer he will gladly continue to drink whenever it's available. The episode then delivers a collection of savage one-star reviews, ranging from stale malt complaints to over-the-top Iron Maiden insults, providing some much-needed levity.

In this episode, we discuss recent developments at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil (ESB) following the deaths of Pupy and Kenya, the sanctuary's two female African elephants, in 2025.As we have seen in recent weeks, we are living in a time that is exposing a troubling side of our society — one where false and negative claims are more readily accepted than positive truth, and where it often seems easier to believe accusations of manipulation and corruption than to accept that honesty and integrity exist. In this conversation, we examine how anti-sanctuary narratives and the temporary suspension of ESB's license to bring in new elephants have emerged in this climate — and why the impact extends beyond elephants, affecting wider wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts. At the same time, we explore why this difficult moment may also present an opportunity: to bring clarity through evidence-based review, and to highlight the vital — and too often misunderstood and ignored — responsibility sanctuaries around the world take on when they accept elderly, chronically ill, and end-of-life elephants into their care.We urge supporters to sign and share our petition calling for fair, transparent, and equal standards — ensuring that Elephant Sanctuary Brazil and zoos in Brazil are assessed by the same regulatory criteria. What we know so far about Pupy & Kenya's passingTransparency and Accountability for AllThe episode transcript can be found here.Email: We'd love to hear from you podcast@globalelephants.orgWho we are: Global Sanctuary for Elephants exists to create vast, safe spaces for captive elephants, where they are able to heal physically and emotionally. Join me on a journey deep into the reaches of the Coal Patch, following the anthracite trail to...Shamokin! I didn't think I'd do a coal country episode when I started the podcast, but Shamokin kept coming up (mostly because listener Jay Zalewski kept telling me about things in Shamokin), and here we are. But don't worry; Jay was right, this is a town worth a visit.  I interviewed Eric Kuijpers, a Dutch native who's been in the US for many years, and now owns and runs the Covered Bridge Brewhaus. We'll talk about his love for Dutch and Belgian beers, his micro-scale distilling, and why his flagship beer is named Ho-Butt.  We make other stops: the other brewery in town, Lost Mine-D,  and have an ESB. You know I love a good hot dog, like they have at the Coney Island Lunch, opened in 1918! I filled my cooler at Fisher's Boston Pierogi, and picked up some meaty snacks at Masser's Farm Market and Irish Isle Provisions. I met up with Jay and had drinks at Oliver's Cigars and Spirits, and the Heritage Restaurant & Pub, then enjoyed some pizza and camaraderie at James' Pizza, an old-time corner bar and pizza joint.  I learned a lot about the Coal Country, and I'll share it with you. But you really should go yourself, and meet the friendly inhabitants. Good bunch! What else? Well, What I'm Drinking Today is another Tröegs beer, their Dark Lager, but I'm doing it for a cause (and because it's really good!). The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about a winter jewel in the crown of Centre County, Black Moshannon State Park, where you can skate, ski, fish, and even go ice-boating; that's a wild ride! I don't talk about my new book, American Whiskey Master Class, for the first time in four months! Time we both took a break, eh?  Next episode? I don't know. Yet. I have one interview I can do, and I've got a couple I might do, and it's going to be one of those. The suspense is killin' me.   See you in two weeks! Until then?

Ireland's ambitions to strengthen female leadership across its technology sector have taken a leap forward with the launch of NOVA - Women in Tech Leadership Programme, designed specifically for the top tier of emerging female tech leaders. Created by Technology Ireland Digital Skillnet in partnership with Connecting Women in Tech (CWIT), NOVA will focus on combining human-centred leadership with the advanced strategic technology and AI-enabled capabilities expected of senior tech leaders in the years ahead. For the Technology Ireland Digital Skillnet, the NOVA programme builds on a decade of impact on women in the technology sector, through its multi award winning women tech returner programmes, bringing over 900 women back to the tech sector, and impacting on gender balance across the sector. The initiative will see over 20 professionals from 25 CWIT member companies advance their leadership journey when the first cohort commences in January. Máire Hunt, Director of Technology Ireland Digital Skillnet, said: "As a sector we must continually find new ways to attract, retain and promote women. Particularly in the age of AI, women can be disproportionately affected. The NOVA programme is a high-performance accelerator specifically designed for women leaders who can shape the future of technology in an AI driven world. It equips participants not just to take a seat at the table, but to shape it." Women are often underrepresented in tech and AI leadership roles, which can influence how AI systems are developed and implemented. If AI systems are developed without diverse perspectives, they may perpetuate biases that disproportionately affect women. Una Fitzpatrick Director of Technology Ireland, said: "Women in Technology already excel in their technical domain. However, they are under-represented at more senior management positions. Companies across the sector are looking for a sector driven, development pathway that prepares female leaders to make an impact in an AI driven world." Technology Ireland Digital Skillnet partnered with CWIT for the pilot NOVA programme, which was formally launched on Friday last. Maire Hunt added: "CWIT exists to help women thrive in the tech industry, so they were a natural partner for the first NOVA programme." The inaugural intake in January includes 25 female leaders across domains such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, fintech, AI services, semiconductors, and enterprise technology. Companies such as Ergo, ADM, HPE, Workday, Kerry Group, ESB, Mastercard, Salesforce, BT, Accenture and Microsoft are represented. Commenting, Sabrina Staunton of Mastercard and CWIT, said: "CWIT exists due to the power of the network to attract, retain and promote females to thrive in the technology space in Ireland. We are excited to launch the first-of-its-kind development program to address the challenge of female talent retention across the Irish technology industry, through the power of partnerships built on our collective power to empower." NOVA includes modules on strategic thinking, future technologies, emotional intelligence, AI-enabled decision making, high-impact communication and personal leadership identity. Combining live workshops, one on one coaching and a leadership impact project, the NOVA programme blends in-person and virtual sessions, one on one coaching and practical insights. Held over a six-month period it is designed to build skills progressively and embed new leadership habits. Individual companies can also deliver the programme in-house for groups of female leaders. Version 1 is one example where the programme is contextualised for a fast-growing AI driven organisation. Ireland's technology sector employs more than 170,000 people across global multinationals, high-growth Irish companies and a vibrant start-up ecosystem. As businesses continue to adapt to AI-driven transformation, programmes such as NOVA that develop strategic awareness, adaptability and leadership presence will be in de...

We also share how Kenya is doing after the sudden and heartbreaking loss of her companion, Pupy.As the year draws to a close, we turn to our end-of-year fundraiser, which kicked off on GivingTuesday, 2 December. This year's campaign is made up of two parts: the GivingTuesday goal of USD 150,000 (including a USD 75,000 match), and a second year-end goal of another USD 150,000 (with a USD 75,000 match). In total, the combined goal is USD 300,000, with USD 150,000 of that coming from matching donations. This campaign supports the major expansion of the Female Asian Habitat: an additional approximately 200 acres, bringing the total area for the girls to around 280 acres. The new area is one large, undivided landscape with natural vegetation, hills, streams, and endless opportunities for exploration — offering Maia, Rana, Mara, Bambi, and Guillermina even more freedom, choice, and room to heal.*For scale: 280 acres ≈ 1.13 km², or about 159 soccer fields, 212 American football fields, and roughly one-third the size of Central Park in New York City. The next podcast airs on Tuesday, 30. Rætt er við Heiðu Njólu Guðbrandsdóttur verkfræðing og forstöðumann hjá Icelandair um þann gríðarlega kostnað sem fellur á íslensk flugfélög í formi umhverfisskatta- og gjalda, en hún er sérfræðingur í margs konar kerfum sem sett hafa verið á flugfélögin í nafni loftlagsmála. Heiða Njóla útskýrir í þættinum hvernig ETS viðskiptakerfi Evrópusambandsins með losunarheimildir virkar og hver þróunin hefur verið og fer yfir plönin framundan. Annar vaxandi kostnaðarliður í rekstri flugfélaga er SAF eða sjálfbært eldsneyti og hefur ESB sett reglur um að notkun á því skuli margfaldast á næstu árum. Þá er einnig til kerfi á vegum ICAO Alþjóðaflugmálastofnunarinnar sem kallast CORSIA og heldur utan um losun gróðurhúsalofttegunda í alþjóðaflugi, svo eitthvað sé nefnt. Öll þessi kerfi þýða marga milljarða króna kostnað á ári fyrir félag eins og Icelandair og útfærslan þýðir að Ísland ber langhæstu kostnaðarbyrðar allra landa Evrópu í formi loftlagsskatta. Núverandi plön og regluverk gerir ráð fyrir að þessi kostnaður muni bara hækka á næstu árum og það verulega. Áhugavert og upplýsandi viðtal um stöðu flugsins í þessu samhengi.

Hagsmunagæsla utanríkisþjónustu Íslands og Noregs í tengslum við verndartolla Evrópusambandsins á járnblendi var ein sú víðtækasta sem ráðist hefur verið í. Reyndar þótti embættismönnum ESB framganga vera slík að þeir sáu ástæðu til að kvarta undan henni. Konumorð eru ekki framin í tómarúmi, skrifar Sara Hendriks, framkvæmdastjóri Stefnumótunar Sameinuðu þjóðanna í málefnum kvenna, heldur eru þau oft endapunktur á löngu, samfelldu ofbeldisferli sem getur byrjað með drottnunargirni, hótunum og áreitni, þar á meðal rafrænni. Kynbundið, stafrænt ofbeldi gegn konum er einmitt það sem athyglinni er sérstaklega beint að á alþjóðadegi gegn ofbeldi á konum að þessu sinni. Árið 2025 verður gott ár í íslenskum sjávarútvegi og markmiðið sem fyrr er að reyna að fá sem mest verðmæti út úr hverjum fiski sem veiddur er. Jónas Gestur Jónasson, löggiltur endurskoðandi og meðeigandi hjá Deloitte, fór yfir afkomu í sjávarútvegi á Sjávarútvegsdeginum sem haldinn var í dag. Það eru stórar tölur í uppgjörum fyrirtækjanna, milljarðavelta og umræðan á þá leið að þarna græði menn á tá og fingri.

Ákvörðun Evrópusambandsins (ESB) um að leggja verndartolla á kísilmálm frá Íslandi og Noregi markar þáttaskil í samskiptum EES-ríkjanna. Þrátt fyrir áratugalangt samstarf og aðild Noregs og Íslands að innri markaði Evrópu í gegnum EES-samninginn var hvorugt landið undanþegið tollunum sem eru undir hatti svokallaðra verndartolla. Dr. Carl Baudenbacher, fyrrverandi forseti EFTA-dómstólsins, gagnrýndi ákvörðunina harðlega í viðtali við Morgunblaðið. Hann segir verndartollana gróft brot á EES-samningnum. EES-samningurinn er án nokkurs efa einn mikilvægasti alþjóðasamningur sem Ísland hefur gert. Við Íslendingar lifum á alþjóðaviðskiptum – lífskjör okkar byggjast á greiðum aðgangi að erlendum mörkuðum. Þegar Evrópusambandið tekur einhliða ákvörðun um að útiloka samstarfsríki og gengur gegn grunnhugsun samningsins ætti öllum að vera ljóst að undirstöður EES-samstarfsins eru ekki jafn sterkar og við höfum talið okkur trú um. Og það þjónar ekki hagsmunum okkar að gera lítið úr málinu og tala um hliðarspor, eins og forsætisráðherra gerir eða gefa til kynna að lausnin liggi í því að Ísland gangi inn í Evrópusambandið, líkt og utanríkisráðherra lætur liggja að. En auðvitað kemur það ekki nokkrum manni á óvart að þegar glíma þarf við vandamál eða leysa verkefni sé lausn Viðreisnar alltaf það sama: Evrópusambandsaðild.

The annual awards recognise the contribution and excellence of project management in Ireland, showcasing the best innovation and talent in the profession. This year, 10 awards were presented at the black-tie event hosted at PwC's Dublin office on Thursday 6 November. From a workforce management transformation project in the retail sector to a telehealth programme, the event celebrated a variety of projects across numerous industries and demonstrates the growing influence and success of project management in Ireland. Lidl was celebrated in the special "Future of Work Excellence" category for Ireland's first net zero energy supermarket. Based in Maynooth, the store is net zero in both operational and embodied carbon. Furthermore, the supermarket's design promotes wellbeing and productivity among employees by incorporating natural light, landscaped surroundings and low noise systems. Government-backed not-for-profit Business For Biodiversity Ireland has opened up its membership for 2026 to Irish businesses now and said there is no time to lose for the private sector to start factoring nature into decision-making to maintain a sustainable society and economy for Ireland. BFBI is partnering with global experts Business For Nature, Deloitte WorldClimate and KPMG Sustainable Futures Teams as they deliver a Nature Strategy Accelerator Programme, including an online information hub, step-by-step guidance and workshops to help Irish businesses of every size and sector to be prepared and understand the steps they should be taking regarding nature-related risk. Nature initiative for Irish businesses to boost biodiversity BFBI Executive Director Dr Maria Fitzpatrick said: "It is clear that 'business as usual' is not an option anymore, as the 2025 WWF Global Risks Report warns, four of the top 10 risks in the 10-year forecast are environment-related risks. With our Nature Strategy Accelerator Programme, we support our members to understand the risks ahead, build resilience in the face of those challenges and find ways to adapt to what's in store." BFBI offers expert guidance and peer support, with long-term members including Bank of Ireland, Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail, ESB and SAP Landscapes involved since soon after BFBI's founding in 2021, with seed-funding support from National Parks and Wildlife Services and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. "Their feedback as they navigate the evolving sustainability reporting landscape has helped shape the BFBI Nature Strategy Accelerator Programme which incorporates international best practice, leading science-based frameworks and updates to help businesses to stay abreast of ESG regulation. "The members currently in our Strategy Track have been working closely with us since close to our inception and have been developing and honing their Nature Strategy and feeding back to us in workshops about the challenges and opportunities involved in navigating stakeholder engagement, environmental reporting and monitoring and assessment of their biodiversity actions in an ongoing, iterative process. Their testimonials feature on our website and our new brochure, available at businessforbiodiversity.ie" Many more businesses are joining each year, and BFBI has been undertaking research and educational collaborations with Irish institutions including Trinity College Dublin and Bord Iascaigh Mhara, and fellow initiatives including Horizon Nua and Go Nature Positive, and now various local authorities as they lead the movement to a Nature Positive Economy for Ireland. Maria adds: "We are collaborating on an upcoming free webinar with Waterford City & County Council. The overall aim of all our work is to support businesses in the move to a Nature Positive Economy for Ireland. This is a concept that emerged as a global goal, via a collaborative forum of business and nature institutions of which BFBI is a member, which aims to ensure, put simply, more nature in the world in 2030 than in 2020 and continued recovery after that. We advocate for ensuring that all of our economic and policy decisions are made with this goal in mind." BFBI has also collaborated with National Parks and Wildlife Services on the Biodiversity Duty for Public Bodies - a guidance document on how to assess and report on their biodiversity impacts and actions, launched earlier this year by Minister for Nature Christopher O'Sullivan, Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage. What is the Business For Biodiversity Ireland Nature Strategy Accelerator Programme? The Nature Strategy Accelerator Programme consists of four stages to progress through at the businesses' own pace. Discovery Track: The free introductory 10-step Discovery Track is a great way to swiftly learn how to make the business case for nature with access to online resources and webinars. At ESB, we cannot deliver our goal of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040 alone, so the ideas presented throughout the week were so important as innovation is at the core of what we do at ESB. "Our hosting of the Grand Finale event further demonstrates our commitment to work with our partners to deliver on this purpose. The high-quality pipeline of innovation, new technologies and learnings that were on display throughout this year's programme will help advance clean energy initiatives around the world. We congratulate AssetCool on winning this year's programme and to all the start-ups that took part." Commenting on their win, Niall Coogan, Co-Founder & CEO, at AssetCool, said: "We are incredibly proud to win this year's Free Electrons programme. It is an outstanding achievement considering the quality of the other finalists and the fact there were 877 applicants at the beginning. The Grand Finale event hosted by ESB in Dublin has been a great way to end this year's competition. We would like to thank all of the start-ups we have shared this experience with and are now looking forward to continuing to work closely with partner utilities to bring our ideas to life that we hope will help power a more sustainable world." Budget Must Offer Tax Support for Green Energy Innovators

Budget 2026 must include tax measures to support green energy innovators, according to Hydrogen Ireland. With less than four weeks to go until October 7th, the organisation has identified supportive fiscal frameworks as crucial elements of the drive to promote emerging opportunities. CEO of Hydrogen Ireland, Paul McCormack, says the right framework of technologies and personnel with the right skillsets must be in place - and that requires support for funding now: "With the right approach, hydrogen projects could be having an impact on Ireland's energy landscape in three to five years. To achieve that, our hydrogen economy needs to be underpinned by a progressive tax strategy - one that rewards innovation, de-risks investment, and aligns fiscal tools with our climate ambition. We engage with dozens of investors and international organisations that all recognise Ireland's potential as the epicentre of the hydrogen revolution. What we need is the right support framework to convince them to invest here. We need to provide tax reliefs that will help convince people that Ireland is ready to lead the way towards a just transition, with hydrogen as a central element on that journey". Paul McCormack's comments follow the Taoiseach's comments in a letter to the EC President Ursula von der Leyen, expressing concerns about the impact of rising energy costs on semiconductor chipmakers, and calling for 'interim measures' to be taken to address the situation. CEO of Hydrogen Ireland Paul McCormack welcomed Taoiseach Micheál Martin's decision to raise the issue directly with Ms von der Leyen and sees the move as 'a strategic inflection point': "If Europe wants to lead in high tech, semiconductors, big data and AI, it must also lead in clean, affordable energy. That means coupling hydrogen innovation, grid reform, and industrial resilience into one cohesive vision. "Thanks to progress made to date, Ireland is in a prime position to harness the full potential of green hydrogen. We're calling on the government to create the kind of fiscal environment that will capitalise on the work done so far and allow innovators the space to accelerate progress towards a cleaner energy future for ourselves and our European neighbours". The global hydrogen dialogue will take centre stage at the World Hydrogen Technologies Convention in Dublin from October 21 - 23. Hosted by Hydrogen Ireland, WHTC is one of the best-known conventions in the fields of hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology. Speakers will include Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Timmy Dooley TD, Tony O'Reilly, Founder and CEO of dCarbonX and President of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, Dr Ayfer Verizoglu. Sponsors include ESB, Gas Networks Ireland and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

We dove deep into the world of legacy beer styles, the ebb and flow of trends in the craft beer scene, and how Green Man keeps pivoting and thriving even as the industry gets more crowded and competitive. From war stories about hay-infused brews and pumpkin beers arriving way before the harvest, to the real-world logistics of steering a brewery battleship in the wake of ever-shifting consumer preferences, this conversation was packed with insight, laughs, and a couple of surprise bottles (including some soju in a plastic liter bottle). We explored everything from experimental IPAs to the comforting return of classic ESBs and sessionable lagers, not to mention what it will take to bring Asheville's South Slope back to full vibrancy. Joe Summers has nearly two decades of experience in the beverage industry, steering Green Man Brewing through thick and thin as Managing Director. Matt Peyton, whose background is in civil and environmental engineering, has spent almost every waking moment of the last twelve years climbing from delivery driver all the way up to Director of Brewing. Both are passionate advocates for beer brewed with balance, intention, and a healthy respect for tradition—even as they chase after the occasional trend or wacky adjunct. "Brewery is not an F1 car, it's a battleship. And it takes a long time to turn it and move it in a direction." ~Matt Peyton Today on Consuming the Craft:·     Trends in the craft beer industry are cyclical; legacy beer styles, such as ESB, IPA, and Porter, are making a comeback as trends shift from fads to classics.·     Steering a brewery toward a new trend requires years of planning, from label approval to production schedules; you can't just pivot overnight.·     The “haze craze” and IPA experimentation are still very much alive, but there's growing consumer interest in sessionable, lower-ABV beers and clean lagers.·     Legacy brands, dependable classics consumers know and trust, help breweries stay resilient when distributors prioritize trendier items like hard seltzers.·     Economic uncertainty means more people are reaching for tried-and-true classic beers, rather than taking a chance on expensive new releases.·     The Asheville craft scene is recovering after a tough year, and both breweries and locals are eager to welcome back visitors and celebrate a return to normal.·     Experimentation isn't dead, surprise tastings during the conversation included a robust Armagnac and a surprisingly smooth (and subtle) Korean soju.·     Food, beer, and community remain at the heart of what breweries like Green Man do, whether its chili made with porter or a scotch egg and a pint at Jack the Wood. Contact Green Man Brewing Company: Website: https://www.greenmanbrewery.com/ Locations: 27 Buxton Ave, Asheville, NC (plus additional taproom info online) Resources Mentioned: Green Man Brewing Company beers: ESB, Porter, Damn Fine Pilsner (currently on draft) East Village Grill (offering Green Man's “Easy Drinking Pills”) Sierra Nevada Brewing (new pilsner noted for excellence) McConnell Farms This episode is brought to you by… McConnell Farms - Taste the Way You Remember.
