On this episode of the Dealership Fixit, we talk to Tim Yarborough, the National Admissions Representative for Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI). As a graduate of an automotive trade school (Wyoming Technical Institute & East Valley Institute), I get to talk about what it looks like in 2023 for the young aspiring technician starting on this journey to be a trained mechanic. We start off with learning Tim's background, which included sales, F&I in automotive and powersports dealers and General Manager at a Harley dealer before finding his home for the last 20+ years with Universal Technical Institute in their Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. A school known for churning out thousands upon thousands of trained technicians, many of which are still working at dealerships today. We go over what the ideal candidate for joining the school would look like, what to expect, and what some of the training curriculum would look like. We also dive into the many different OEMs that support the school with donation bikes, ATVs, side-by-sides, watercraft, and marine vehicles to help learn on. Did you know that after 14 months, these techs are walking out of there with an associate's degree? Diving into what day one in the workforce would look like. Typically a year and a half in of schooling, student debt, financed tools and their toolbox, they relocate to work at a new shop. Scary for some. What should dealers expect when onboarding these new techs and putting them into a mentorship with a more experienced tech or shop foreman. Continued schooling is also a big factor! The industry and the products are getting so advanced, the OEM's are pushing the limits, the techs need to learn how to fix it and get some further education. MMI has got your back on that too. Overall, I harken back to my own time going to a technical school, picking out my courses, talking to dealers, and ultimately working as a certified master technician for over 7 years. It set my course and put me in the workforce within a year. Unlike many college programs that are double and triple the cost depending on the degree, most don't end up using it anyway. Learn a trade, skills stay with you for life. Thanks again to Tim at MMI for the great conversation, we hope you find some value in this podcast. In this episode of the Real Build, I sat down with Dan Cummings, owner of Southwest Garage Doors. Dan and I talked about how a garage door makes a significant impact on the home's look and someone's lifestyle. It also is essential how a garage door functions. A garage door is most people's access into their homes. A garage door must operate correctly but also be built to last. Dan was raised in Phoenix and Scottsdale by a strong single mother. He graduated from Desert Mountain and East Valley Institute of Technology (EBIT) for welding and metal work. Dan worked on garage doors since he was a Junior in high school, and he has been captivated by it ever since. He was lucky enough to have a great mentor that gave me the tools that allowed him to grow into the Craftsman he is today. With eight years in the industry, three years of metal fabrication, and the desire to keep growing, it was only right to focus on what made him happy. He started his business with a focus on installing & fabricating custom garage door systems and top quality repair work. Critical Shortage There is a critical shortage of automotive technicians and the U.S. Labor Bureau estimates about 46,000 automotive technicians will be needed by 2026. Today’s cars have more computing power than the system that guided Apollo astronauts to the moon. The Apollo 11 spaceship had 150,000 lines of code. Google’s mobile Android operating system has 12 million and the modern car can have 100 million lines of code. Modern technicians spend as much time in front of a computer as they do under a hood. These jobs require people with tactile intelligence, education and interest in S.T.E.M. related training. They need strong technology expertise and diagnostic and problem-solving skills. It’s no longer simply about wrenches and oil. It’s a world filled with advanced equipment and technology, and it requires technicians with sophisticated, high-tech training. Resources to help TechForce Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that champions students to and through their education and into careers as professional technicians. They are a resource for students, their parents, influencers helping them find technical training, internships, scholarships and jobs. Many teens are looking to work with their hands and aren't interested in going to a four year college. These careers are New Collar, Not Blue Collar, positions and are lucrative financially. Welcome This Week's Guests! We were honored to have CEO of TechForce Foundation http://bit.ly/2LUh2wW Jennifer Maher and A.S.E. Master Technician and Automotive Instructor Cody Metcalf of one of the premier High School Trade schools in the country East Valley Institute of Technology!
