What happens when you choose to step away from mainstream expectations and reclaim your family's destiny? Mary Wainwright's journey from conventional life to intentional living offers a roadmap for those feeling trapped in industrial systems.Mary returns to share insights from her new book "Taking Back My Life," which chronicles her radical transformation across every aspect of family living. She takes us through the stark contrast between her traumatic hospital birth and her subsequent empowering home births, revealing how this experience catalyzed her entire lifestyle shift. Rather than presenting her choices as the "right way," Mary simply illuminates alternatives many families never consider. The conversation explores how modern society has systematically disconnected us from fundamental knowledge in just one or two generations. From growing food to understanding natural remedies, we've surrendered our self-sufficiency to systems that often prioritize profit over wellbeing. Mary shares practical steps anyone can take - starting a small garden, learning to make bone broth, or questioning medical interventions - that gradually build toward greater independence.Perhaps most powerful is Mary's reflection on community building. She describes creating a "tribe" where families barter skills, share resources, and collectively raise children. This interdependence makes sustainable living not just possible but deeply fulfilling, addressing the isolation that drove many women away from traditional roles decades ago.The conversation continually returns to fear as the controlling mechanism that keeps us compliant within industrial systems. By recognizing this pattern and making intentional choices about time, education, health, and community, Mary demonstrates how families can create lives aligned with their deepest values rather than external expectations. Her parting question resonates: "Are you living the life you want your children to replicate?"Ready to reclaim aspects of your family's life? As an educator with over 22 years of experience, Jacqueline Ackerman shares her teaching and learning knowledge in an engaging, relatable and friendly way. She believes all learners can make progress. A high school teacher for 17 years and examiner for 15, Jacqueline established her own tutoring business. Remembering what it was like to be thrown into homeschooling when her son was very ill, she realized the main thing she wanted to do was help parents who were in this position when their child was in their teens. She has enjoyed supporting families through their often-unexpected homeschooling journey and most importantly helping them prepare for exams. Her work as an examiner is still very important to her and she is now Principal Examiner for International History iGCSE. Jacqueline also visits schools, both home and abroad, running courses that aim to help delegates understand the assessment of the qualification they are teaching and how to prepare their students for specific units. In this episode, Jacqueline discusses how her personal experience of homeschooling her son due to his illness led her to a new career path. She explains that Ackerman Home Learning offers a mix of one-on-one tutoring services, helpful online resources, and plans for a future membership community aimed at providing support and guidance to parents suddenly thrust into homeschooling. Samson Shelton, the former teacher and professional wrestler who admitted to attempting to murder 17-year-old Ashley Reeves in 2006, has been released on parole after serving about 17 years of his 20-year sentence. The Illinois Department of Corrections confirmed his release this Monday, April 22, marking the end of a case that captured national attention and was later depicted in a Lifetime movie. In 2006, Shelton, then a 26-year-old driver's education teacher and known in wrestling circles as "The Teacher," became infamously linked to the brutal attack on Reeves, who had once been a student at the middle school where he taught. The incident occurred after Shelton and Reeves, who had been involved romantically, got into an altercation while he was driving. According to reports, Shelton choked Reeves and broke her neck before discarding her body in a wooded area of Citizens Park in Belleville. Reeves was found barely alive around 2 a.m. on April 29, 2006, after a 30-hour search initiated when she was reported missing. Miraculously surviving the attack, she endured significant brain trauma and underwent a painstaking recovery process to relearn fundamental skills such as swallowing, walking, and talking. During his incarceration, Shelton was housed at Illinois River Correctional Center, beginning in June 2007. His early release on parole, scheduled to last until April 2027, has reignited discussions about justice and rehabilitation. The case garnered extensive media coverage due to the shocking nature of the crime and Shelton's dual life as an educator and wrestler. His confession and the subsequent discovery of Reeves alive were pivotal moments in the investigation, which revealed the extent of his betrayal. In a recent interview, Reeves, now in her 30s, shared her ongoing recovery journey and her determination to move forward. "It's been a long and challenging road, but I'm focused on my future and continuing to heal," she told KSDK. As the community reflects on Shelton's release, many continue to be haunted by the severity of the crime and its impact on a young student. The case remains a profound example of survival and the complex questions surrounding sentencing and parole in the criminal justice system. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
This morning Gov. Tim Walz posted on X, “Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what's possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school.” He has compared moments in politics to the start of school before. It is a reference to his career as a high school teacher. MPR News reached out to a couple of his former students to find out what they might be thinking now that someone who taught them history is making it into history books himself. Laura Muhm, a small-business owner in White Bear Lake, and Noah Hobbs, a former Duluth City Councilmember, joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to share their memories of Walz as Mankato West High School Students — and their takes on him as a VP candidate.
