Abbie and Adrian talk about bridging the gap between what can be measured and what truly matters in communications and public relations. They discuss how the phrase "what gets measured gets managed"—often wrongly attributed to Peter Drucker—can be misleading since not everything that truly matters can be quantified and counted. Abbie shares her experiences from earlier in her career, reminiscing about the era of clip books, where the success of PR campaigns was measured by the volume of media coverage, rather than the content or its impact. They conclude that while measurement tools and technology have certainly advanced, the core challenge remains: identifying the right metrics that resonate with the client's goals and demonstrate the value of a campaign in achieving business success. Read the transcript and notes for this episode on our website. Key Takeaways Effective PR measurement requires aligning communications strategy with overarching business goals to accurately assess impact and success. Modern tools and analytics enable the measurement of various aspects of PR campaigns, but there is still a challenge in capturing intangible impacts like brand awareness. PR & communications professionals must align their measurement strategies with the actual business objectives to demonstrate real value to clients. Misalignment between client expectations and PR outcomes can result from failure to ask the right questions at the start of a campaign. Continuous dialogue between PR agencies and clients is crucial for demonstrating value and securing long-term partnerships. The 2025 Comms Report by Cision and PRWeek highlights the significant impact of AI on the PR industry, touching on both the opportunities and concerns AI presents.Abbie and Adrian discuss how AI is becoming an integral part of their workflows, while also addressing fears about job security and budget impacts. They emphasize the importance of adapting to these changes by equipping oneself with AI knowledge to enhance professional value and ensure a place at the decision-making table in future communications efforts.Read the transcript and notes for this episode on our website. Key Takeaways AI serves as a powerful tool in PR for brainstorming, research, and content creation, but it should complement rather than replace human professionals. There's a growing trend in the industry towards developing proprietary AI tools tailored to specific needs, rather than relying solely on off-the-shelf solutions. Embracing AI requires upskilling, with an emphasis on understanding and leveraging technology to retain competitive advantage in PR. PR and communications pros need to leverage AI as a tool to enhance their skills and add value, rather than viewing it as a replacement for human expertise in the industry. Despite concerns about budget impacts due to AI capabilities, effective communication professionals must demonstrate how they can integrate AI while maintaining the human element essential for strategic insight. Systemic biases are pervasive, and acknowledging personal biases is essential for fostering more inclusive spaces. Real progress requires open, honest, and sometimes tough conversations about race, equity, and inclusion in society. Abbie and Adrian talk about the 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer report, which reveals rising global grievances and declining trust in institutions. They explore how businesses, governments, and NGOs can rebuild trust amidst economic and social challenges. Read the transcript and notes for this episode on our website. Key Takeaways The Edelman Trust Barometer reveals a global decline in trust across institutions, with grievances rising significantly. A high-profile legal battle has erupted in Hollywood involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, following allegations of sexual harassment during the production of the film It Ends With Us. Abbie Fink and Dr. Adrian McIntyre talk about the complexities of reputation management in the public relations field, raising ethical concerns around the tactics used by both celebrities and their representatives. They discuss how these cases reflect broader issues in public relations, particularly the manipulation of media narratives and the potential misuse of reputation management strategies to damage opponents. The implications of this case extend beyond the individuals involved, touching on the ethical responsibilities of PR professionals and the impact of public perception on personal and professional lives.Key Takeaways The unfolding legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni raises ethical concerns for public relations practitioners. The recent $15 million settlement between ABC News and President-elect Trump has sparked significant concern about the future of objective reporting and press freedom. Adrian McIntyre and Abbie Fink discuss the implications of this case, exploring how such legal actions can influence journalistic integrity and the delicate balance between business interests and the truth. They talk about the evolving role of media as both a watchdog and a business, particularly in an environment where ownership is increasingly concentrated among a few powerful individuals. As the media landscape becomes more fragmented and audiences self-select into echo chambers, the challenge of maintaining impartial reporting intensifies. This raises critical questions about the responsibility of journalists to uphold their mission while navigating the pressures of a changing industry.Key Takeaways The settlement between ABC News and President-elect Trump raises concerns about journalistic integrity. As media organizations face financial pressures, maintaining objective reporting becomes increasingly challenging. The relationship between media ownership and editorial independence is becoming more complicated in today's landscape. The rise of cheap conspiracy theories highlights the high costs of funding real investigative journalism. Abbie Fink and Adrian McIntyre discuss the phenomenon of "news deserts," areas devoid of reliable local news sources, drawing on a comprehensive study by Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media and Integrated Marketing Communications that tracks the scale and impact of shrinking local journalism. Adrian and Abbie underscore the consequences of losing local media outlets, such as decreased civic participation, increased political polarization, and the loss of accountability from local governments and institutions. Abbie emphasizes the need for news literacy, educating communities on the importance of diverse news sources and equipping them with the tools to discern credible local reporting from passive consumption of national clips. Supporting local journalism goes beyond subscribing to local newspapers. It involves participating actively in local media by reading, sharing, and financially supporting credible journalism. Despite the grim outlook, Adrian points out the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit driving new digital journalism initiatives, including nonprofit organizations like States Newsroom and newsletters like the Arizona Agenda and Tucson Agenda. Key Takeaways The decline of local journalism and the diminishing number of local news outlets has created "news deserts" across the United States. Research shows that more than half of the nation's counties have little to no local news coverage. Local news is critical for civic engagement; its absence correlates with lower voter turnout, reduced civic participation, and increased political polarization. Consumers must support local publications to ensure diverse voices and accurate reporting. Investing in local journalism through subscriptions and active engagement is essential to maintain informed communities and foster public understanding and civic responsibility. Is a large public relations agency better than a small one? Several factors come into play because each agency will have different strengths. I like to say that the perfect public relations agency is a bit like perfect love—it doesn't exist. But there is certainly an agency that is made for you! How do you find it? I suggest four tracks that will help you in your search for the perfect public relations partner: Flexibility and adaptability Feels like they have known you for a long time Always finds time for you Resembles you Flexibility and adaptability A bigger public relations agency has more human resources, contacts, and important tools. But a medium-sized agency willing to become your partner will provide you with the flexibility you may need at this stage of your business development. An agency willing to regularly review its objectives and openly analyze its results with you will be a faithful ally. Feels like they have known you for a long time You know this instant connection that makes you feel confident from the first few minutes. In over 20 years of service at NATA PR agency, virtually all these collaborations have been successful. So don't hesitate to continue the exchanges with an agency that makes you feel confident and gives you the impression of knowing them for a long time. It's an excellent start! Always finds time for you Smaller public relations agencies can be more flexible, and reactive, and offer a more personalized service. They won't hesitate to reschedule appointments to accommodate you and connect with you. With smaller teams, agency leaders and experts can be more involved in each project. You won't have to start from scratch whenever a young account executive leaves the agency. Resembles you Medium-sized agencies can also specialize in specific domains or industries, which can be an advantage if you're looking for specific expertise. They resemble you and can become your public relations department. So, does size matter? Is bigger better? It's important to note that the size of an agency doesn't necessarily guarantee its quality or its ability to meet your needs. It's essential to consider other criteria such as experience, references, specific skills, the agency's culture, values, and ability to understand your company and industry. The best public relations agency is undoubtedly one that already knows you. If you wish to continue the conversation on this subject, please contact me. You are in search of the best public relations agency and wondering how to navigate through all these agencies that, from the outside, seem similar and offer similar services. Of course, nothing beats a recommendation from a third party that you know, but even then, be cautious as the recommended partner may not be suitable. I have experienced this several times. The best agency for you is not necessarily the most expensive, prestigious, or award-winning one. No, the best public relations agency is the one that: Offers you a customized planKnows your industryHas served clients similar to youDevelops Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) based on what is valuable to you The best PR agency offers you a customized plan Many agencies propose the same approach to all their clients. Yes, it may generate results, but will it be suitable for you, and will you achieve your desired goals? Feel free to ask the agencies how their proposal differs from what they offer to all their clients. The best PR agency knows your industry Even if the agency you wish to work with appears competent, if they are not familiar with your field or industry, whether it's agri-food or beauty, they will struggle to: Understand youWrite press releases using the appropriate technical terms for your industry correctlyDevelop a contact list they do not already possess. Are you hesitant to work with an agency that already represents multiple brands in your sector? Well, if that agency is not working with your direct competitor, there are several advantages to considering a closer partnership: The agency knows the journalists/influencers who will be interested in your company or product. The agency will quickly know how to make you shine in the eyes of journalists, capturing their attention and generating publicity for you.In certain sectors such as fashion, luxury, and beauty, you will benefit from the synergy of other brands in your industry and gain more visibility. The best agency will develop useful KPIs Why did you decide to hire a public relations agency? You want magazines and newspapers to talk about your product - so ask your agency to set a target number of features (e.g., 5 magazines, 10 websites, 3 newspapers, 2 podcasts, etc.).You want to increase the number of visitors to your website - set a percentage increase goal, for example, 5%, 10%, etc., depending on what makes sense.Cost per thousand impressions, etc. What matters here is determining your expectations and adjusting along the way. No one knows the future, so setting goals and KPIs helps direct efforts in the right direction. It's about the trajectory, not just the end result. Ultimately, the best public relations agency is the one that is passionate, listens to you, and supports you in your growth and journey towards recognition. The best PR agency will make you shine, and most importantly, they will love your company almost as much as you do. Feel free to reach out to us if you would like to continue this discussion with us. “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some hire public relations officers.” – Daniel J. Boorstin Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, sits down with Paul Furiga, President and Chief Storyteller of WordWrite. In this episode, Paul shares decades' worth of knowledge on Public Relations, such as various PR concepts, how to use PR to gain success, and his take on the difference between Advertising and PR. Tune in until the end and gain free access to a chapter of Paul's book! 3 KEY POINTS: A well-shared story syncs the brains of the storyteller with the listeners. Explain your story in layman's terms to attract those outside your profession. Tell people how your unique value is going to change their lives. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: He spent about 20 years in Journalism, wrote about 10,000 stories, and edited another 10,000. Along with his Journalism experience, he learned the value and skill of Storytelling. Paul worked in his friend's PR Firm. He said it was similar to getting an advanced degree in marketing and PR. He started his own Public Relations Firm in 2002, where he used everything he learned about Storytelling, Journalism, and working with great brands. Advertising vs Public Relations analogy: Advertising is when you come into the office the morning after your big date and you tell everybody how great you were. PR is when you come into the office the morning after your big date and your date tells everybody how great you are. With a well-shared story, the storyteller's and listeners' brains sync up in terms of brain activity. Paul and his company practice a 21st Century practice abbreviated as P.E.S.O. - Paid, Earned, Shared, Owned. Every healthcare client Paul works with needs these four categories of content to gain success. You may have an idea for a story, and your Public Relations Agency will tell you if that's a good idea or not and help you make an idea, that's not as great as it could be, better. Pitching is the Psychology of "When is the right time and right place for the right story?" Three categories of measuring Public Relation success are Outputs, Outtakes, and Outcomes. Press Releases are good for SEO. When you put a Press Release on the internet, write it in plain, easy-to-understand English that can be understood by those outside your profession. You only need to spend a large amount of money if you are making a major national announcement. For regional announcements, there are much more affordable regional distributions. The best way to reach Paul would be through www.wordwritepr.com TWEETABLE QUOTES: "If you can tell the story of why their life is going to be better or different because of the unique value you bring, you're going to have the best success possible." – Paul Furiga "Don't ever measure impressions. What stereotypes have you had or experienced as a South Asian woman? In this episode of the Naughty Bites Podcast I explore the personal and social impact of stereotypes “you must be really smart”, and “you will probably become a lawyer, doctor, or engineer” through honest confessions with Mandeep Kaur Nijjer. As a Chief Executive Officer at her Global Influencer Talent Marketing and Public Relations Agency, we discuss how influencer marketing has become a hybrid phenomenon, merging the advertising logics of celebrity endorsements with social media's engrossment with ‘authentic' and self-generated consumer content. We reflect and re-evaluate how aspiring influencers and industry professionals can face barriers to participation and success, including systemic inequalities of gender, race and class, infrastructural inequalities in digital/media in terms of access to influencer agencies, and social media visibility.Find Naughty Bites on:Instagram (@anishamistryfernandez) Hosted on Acast. Jon Goldberg is the founder and chief reputation architect of Reputation Architects Inc., a strategic communications and risk management advisory firm focused on building, protecting and restoring reputations in a world of evaporated trust and unprecedented stakeholder engagement. Over the years, Jon has helped clients in virtually every industry build reputational equity, inoculate against crises and transform adverse situations into opportunities to demonstrate leadership and integrity. His experience spans everything from government investigations, public health emergencies, activist attacks, labor disputes, employee matters and unanticipated executive transitions, to cybersecurity incidents, corporate and executive misbehavior, product safety and risk communication issues, complex litigation, corporate reorganizations, workplace violence, chemical and environmental catastrophes and natural disasters. Before founding Reputation Architects, Jon was partner and leader of the Corporate Affairs and Reputation Risk Management practices of Porter Novelli, the international communications consultancy. When Instagram was purchased by Facebook for one billion dollars in 2012, the world's collective jaw dropped to the floor. Traditional business analysts couldn't imagine that a relatively young company with only 13 employees, who's sole product was a a picture sharing app, could be that valuable. Fast forward ten years and Instagram is, for many in the 18 to 45 year old set, the undisputed champion of social media apps. Every day, people are posting millions and millions of pictures--carefully curated, of course--of their lives, their products, their work, etc. In this episode, Abbie Fink and Dr. Adrian McIntyre talk about Instagram's place in business communication today and what the future might hold for the world's favorite photo sharing app. Read Abbie Fink's blog post for this episode: https://hmapr.com/grow-your-brand-with-instagram/ ("Grow Your Brand with Instagram") If you enjoyed this episode, check out the https://www.prgnpodcast.com/ (PRGN Presents) podcast, hosted by Abbie Fink, featuring conversations about PR, marketing, and communications with members of the https://prgn.com/ (Public Relations Global Network), "the world's local public relations agency.” Additional Resources https://hmapr.com/tip-for-tuesday-how-to-boost-engagement-on-tik-tok-and-instagram/ ("How to boost engagement on Tik Tok and Instagram") by Autumn Jarrett https://hmapr.com/how-to-maximize-instagram/ ("How to Maximize Instagram") by Autumn Jarrett https://hmapr.com/instagram-hashtags-less/ ("Instagram Hashtags: Less Is More") by Breanne Krager Need to hire a PR firm? How does your organization define success? Better than average profits? Support of local nonprofits? Great customer feedback? The best way to achieve any of these or other ways you measure success is to ensure your employees are as committed to the success of your organization as you and the other leaders are. No one will be as strong of a brand advocate as the people that work for you. So how do you cultivate that? Since employees play a critical role in an organization's success, effective internal communication is key. It is extremely important to measure your communication effectiveness and especially the link between communication initiatives and business results. In this episode, https://hmapr.com/team/abbie-s-fink/ (Abbie Fink) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrianmcintyre/ (Dr. Adrian McIntyre) talk about visual storytelling with Paul M Bowers. They discuss the nature of the relationship between the creative and the agency, choosing a creative person who is invested in the success of the agency as well as their own gig, and building an ongoing understanding over time. They also talk about the "secret sauce" in a photo or video shoot: the ability of the photographer to coach and create an environment of safety for subjects with whom they're working, how to direct, how to create the best “performance” from the subject, especially those for whom photography/video is uncomfortable. Common sense is increasingly uncommon. And when it comes to the media, there's a lot of common nonsense that circulates all too easily, making it harder and harder for ordinary, well-intentioned folks to find reliable sources of accurate information about the issues we face today. “Media literacy” is more important – and more elusive – than ever. When a company has a problem, a breakdown, a crisis -- something goes wrong and the whole world is talking about it -- it's often said that they have a PR problem. In this episode, https://hmapr.com/team/abbie-s-fink/ (Abbie Fink) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrianmcintyre/ (Dr. Adrian McIntyre) discuss the pitfalls and possibilities of social media for marketing and corporate communications in 2021. Someone posed the question the other day—are you really a business if you don't engage on social media? Good question. Social media connects us with the world at large. Social media can replace email. For many people, social media is their only source of news. And it is no doubt a worthwhile tool for any company that wants to engage with its customers and potential customers. Or is it? There is not a day that goes by that an ill-timed Tweet or insensitive Facebook post sends a business' social media team into overdrive, requiring them to apologize, rephrase or re-do in order to take back control of the narrative. Any business using social media must do everything it can to ensure the right message reaches the right audience at the right time—and for the right reasons. Ruthann Bowen started her career in public relations, which was a natural fit given her personality and interests. After a twenty-year hiatus to raise her children, she decided to get back into the workforce by starting her own agency. A few years in, Ruthann realized just how much the industry had changed during her absence. The daunting task of building relationships from scratch, coupled with the challenges of being a generalist, caused her to rethink her approach. During this time, her involvement with a web design project for a local school sparked a new idea for her business. In 2018, Ruthann rebranded her company as Wix DesignHer, a full-service web design and consulting business, which utilizes the Wix development platform. As her company evolved, Ruthann further refined her niche by targeting female entrepreneurs who strongly resonated with her design and communication style. By focusing her services and building expertise in one core area, Ruthann has been able to develop a recognizable brand and loyal following. And for those do-it-yourselfers out there, she recently wrote a book titled “The Female Entrepreneur’s Guide to Creating Your Own Website in a Weekend.” If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Copper State of Mind: public relations, media, and marketing in Arizona
We've all heard that it's not what you know, it's who you know. But when it comes to the media, especially in today's contentious political climate, it's hard to know who to know and even who to trust … let alone how to get them to trust you. In this episode, https://hmapr.com/team/abbie-s-fink/ (Abbie Fink) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrianmcintyre/ (Dr. Adrian McIntyre) talk about why it's important to build relationships with the media and how to do it. If you want to earn media coverage and build real relationships with journalists and editors, you need to learn what makes each media outlet unique. What kinds of stories do they publish? Does a particular journalist have a specific beat? Is there any way to make your story more interesting and relevant to them? Find out what topics they cover, and don't waste their time with ideas that aren't a good fit. Follow the journalists and media outlets you want to build relationships with on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, and other social media platforms. Read their articles, watch their news reports, and listen to them on the radio. Pro tip: use private Twitter lists to organize your feed and set up Google Alerts to get notified when relevant articles are published. Leave thoughtful, engaging comments when appropriate. Above all, be respectful of their time and their deadlines. Focus on what you can give, not what you can get. And remember that the best time to build relationship with the media is before you need them. Copper State of Mind: public relations, media, and marketing in Arizona
Is "influencer marketing" new? Do influencers make traditional public relations and marketing communications obsolete? These are questions https://hmapr.com/team/abbie-s-fink/ (Abbie Fink) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrianmcintyre/ (Dr. Adrian McIntyre) discuss in today's episode. Merriam-Webster defines influence as "the power or capacity of causing an effect in indirect or intangible ways." In marketing, the use of "influencers" existed long before the digital era. Any celebrity, athlete, public figure, or scientific expert who could influence a buyer's decision was (and is) considered an influencer. But the rise of social media influencers with their own audience or following -- usually on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc -- has begun to change the way companies and marketing agencies alike think about the marketing mix. Influencer marketing is a strategy and a tactic, not unlike other marketing communications tactics. You still have to have a good story to tell, good content to share, and a good understanding of your target audience. Read Abbie Fink's blog post for this episode: https://hmapr.com/csom-influencer-marketing/ ("Does Influencer Marketing Make Traditional Marketing Communications Obsolete?") Copper State of Mind: public relations, media, and marketing in Arizona
Giving back to the community is good for business. Whether through cash contributions, board or volunteer service, businesses that make a commitment to community will reap the benefits. Beyond the buzzwords like CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), community relations is an essential part of public relations practice -- and a key corporate strategy for "do-good programming" that is mutually beneficial for the company and the community. In this episode, https://hmapr.com/team/abbie-s-fink/ (Abbie Fink) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrianmcintyre/ (Dr. Adrian McIntyre) talk about the importance of community relations and giving back. Why should business leaders care about community relations? Is this a "nice-to-have" or a "need-to-have"? What are some best practices and common mistakes to avoid?
