About This Episode: Aaron Quinonez (Sgt Q) endured a rough upbringing before becoming a proud Marine right out of high school. He was trained to fight the enemy and was prepared for war. When he volunteered for a combat tour in Iraq, little did he know his real battle would be fought in his mind. After eight years of military service, Sgt Q suffered from depression, anger, and panic attacks and was diagnosed with PTSD. He nearly ended his own life in the parking lot of a church, where later he was redeemed by Jesus Christ, who gave him a new life. Sgt Q traded the battlefield for the mission field and found healing and purpose through building homes and churches, feeding children, and supplying precious hope to struggling communities worldwide. God then called him to form QMissions, a pathway for veterans—Sgt Q's fellow warfighters—to replace the battle scars of their minds with the joy of serving. Now, Sgt Q is the award-winning author of Healing Thru Service originally aimed at struggling veterans, which also offers help for anyone in crisis and may be one's ticket to a more fulfilled life. He went from being homeless and on the brink of suicide to starting the multi-million dollar company with over 100 employees, Reliable Commercial Cleaning, founding the veteran non-profit, Q Missions, and the health-tech startup, Q Actual 2.0. This week on Beers, we finish off our saga with Alex. This episode is centered around his struggles his faced after the charm of being separated from the military wore off. As I mentioned before, this show was created to help sailor, potential sailor and sailor who are considering separating from the navy. Durk shares with us the anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts he faced daily after his separation. This episode is to let other out there who are struggling with the same thoughts and problems, that you are not alone and that it is ok to get help.
For many Veterans, readjusting to civilian life after leaving the military can be difficult. That's what Aaron Quinonez found when he left the Marine Corps, as he soon faced divorce, homelessness and the inability to secure a long-term job. Over time, his mental health steadily deteriorated as PTSD ravaged his mind. For Quinonez, life seemed to always get worse, and on one July 4th afternoon, he parked in an empty lot, pulled out his SIG Sauer and prepared to end his life. In this week’s episode of Borne the Battle, Quinonez shares his journey from being homeless and on the brink of committing suicide to becoming an entrepreneur, sharing how he developed new programs and a mobile app to help Veterans suffering from PTSD and suicidal thoughts.
Today’s podcast is a Veterans Day special episode. Vanessa Rios Gomez talks with Marine Corps veteran Michael Boscia, who is one of the coordinators for Irreverent Warriors, an organization committed to helping veterans survive the darkest moments in their lives outside of military service.
This Episode was originally supposed to be recorded on April 28th from various locations. Due to logistical issues, it was moved back a couple weeks. The Usuals are joined tonight by Steve Taylor (Canyons 100K) in Foresthill, CA and John Carreiro (Dunes 100 Miler) in Jupiter, FL. They both give their professional and vivid race recap of both events which took place on the same weekend - April 27th and 28th. Josh Milich and Brian Tjersland are ultrarunners who want to run for more than a belt buckle, a medal, or an ice cold finish line beer. Next November they are planning on running the 500 miles from Massachusetts National Cemetery to Arlington National Cemetery to bring awareness to Mission 22, a foundation established in support of all veterans after their service to our country. 500 miles is a lofty goal. But it's a lofty goal with PURPOSE, and having a higher purpose can help us accomplish anything we set out to do. These two guys are normal every day ultrarunners. They aren't professional athletes, just two dudes who love ultra running and pushing their limits, who are setting out to do something incredibly difficult. This purpose WILL push them through the difficult moments of this challenge, including training for something this intense. That's why I love this story and their mission. In this episode, you will hear how and why they came up with this goal. We also hear stories from Brian's experiences running Badwater and Western States, along with Josh's first attempt at a 24 hour race a few weeks ago. I really hope you enjoy this episode and support Josh and Brian's project! Today we are honoring our Veterans in appreciation for all that they've done for us, and we'll also be discussing some of the detrimental challenges that they are faced with. Today is Veterans Day, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which brought World War I to an end in 1918. We are dedicating this show to all of our Veterans for their gracious service to us all. Not only will we be reflecting on the incredible strength of our active duty military members and veterans, but we will also be discussing the challenges they face and what we can do to help. My first guest, Devorah Gottesman, has a robust music career that has spanned the globe, entertaining hundreds of thousands of music fans. She shares her story of the true American spirit of kindness, inclusiveness, and ingenuity that opens the heart to celebrate freedom and joy with the sole purpose of unification. Devorah also shares the song that she wrote and sang coast to coast during one of her bicycling fundraising events for non-profits serving Veterans. Rob Wittmier, U.S. Army Veteran and Founder of the National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide, was shocked when he first learned of the statistics on Veteran suicide. Today he joins us to discuss the stigma around suicide and mental health, and how these issues are being addressed a lot more today. Rob shares how his non-profit helps to create a community for Veterans so that they're never alone, regardless of their military branch or era of service. Colonel Chris Richie, who is a career Aviation Command and Control (C2) officer, also joins us today to help wrap up this show celebrating our Veterans. He shares some positive insight into what's going on with our military today and discusses the incredible impact of providing those that are struggling with the power of hope. We Discuss: Ending Veteran suicide in our nation through education, resources, research and community The impact of the stigma and discrimination that often surrounds mental health How the National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide is addressing suicide deaths among Veterans Visit: VoicesofCourage.us
