The Smartest Dog You Can't Keep: The Real Story of the Border Collie

The Border Collie tops every "smartest dog" list on the internet. It learns commands in under five repetitions, obeys on the first try, and can learn the names of over a thousand objects. That is not an exaggeration. A Border Collie named Chaser did exactly that, under controlled scientific conditions, published in a peer-reviewed journal. The intelligence is real. What the headline leaves out is the other half of the sentence. That intelligence was built for a job. The Border Collie was forged in the hill country between Scotland and England to move sheep across open terrain all day, reading the flock, making split-second decisions without being told, running on a brain that was never designed to sit still. When you take that brain and put it in a home with no work, it does not turn off. It finds something else to do. That something is usually your furniture, your kids' heels, or the shadows on the wall.In this episode of The Dog Behind the Human, Coach Francis breaks down the full picture. The real history of the breed from Old Hemp in 1893 to the founding of the International Sheep Dog Society. What Stanley Coren's famous intelligence ranking actually measured, and what it missed. The genetic conditions every prospective owner needs to know before they commit. And the specific reason Border Collies flood rescues, not because they are bad dogs, but because someone saw "smartest dog in the world" and thought that meant easy. The dog is always right. We just have to learn to read it.

In this tail-wagging, brain-boosting, and totally paw-some episode of Wow in the World, Mindy, Guy Raz, and the WOW crew dive into the surprising science of label learning! At the Dog Vocab World Championship, label learning takes center stage as some of the smartest pups on the planet show off their incredible memories. And as Mindy and Guy discover, label learning might help explain how dog vocabulary works and why dog vocabulary in certain dogs can be way more impressive than you'd ever expect! When Mindy and Guy Raz arrive at a giant stadium to commentate the annual Dog Vocab World Championship, Mindy is mostly focused on one thing: finding a snack. Unfortunately for her, she ends up in the dog toy line instead of concessions and barely has time to figure out what's happening before she and Guy are rushed on air. Once the lights go up and the crowd starts barking, cheering, and howling, Mindy realizes this is no ordinary dog show. This is a high-stakes battle of memory, focus, and fetch. The competitors? A trio of elite canine superstars: the polished Professor Lex, the rebellious fan-favorite Noodle, and the reigning champion Banjo. One by one, the dogs are asked to retrieve specific toys from a big pile on stage, including avocado, monkey, racecar, airplane, and more. To win, each dog must remember which word belongs to which toy and fetch the correct one without making a mistake. It's like a spelling bee, a memory game, and a sporting event all rolled into one very fluffy package. But amid all the excitement, Mindy and Guy uncover the real WOW: a fascinating new scientific study from researchers in Budapest suggests that some dogs may not only learn words through direct teaching, but also by simply overhearing humans talk to one another. That means a dog might be able to learn the name of a toy even when no one is talking to the dog directly! In the study, researchers worked with special dogs that already knew lots of toy names. Then, instead of repeatedly teaching a new word face-to-face, the dog's owner and another person casually talked about the toy together while the dog watched and listened. Later, many of the dogs were able to fetch the correct toy, proving they had learned the word just by overhearing it.Scientists call this process label learning: understanding that a word belongs to a specific object. It's something human babies do too, by listening to the people around them talk. And it turns out some dogs, especially highly attentive breeds like Border Collies, may be able to do something surprisingly similar. That makes these pups true outliers in the animal kingdom, with some dogs able to recognize hundreds, and in rare cases even over a thousand, words. With live commentary, dramatic toy fetches, barks from the crowd, and an unforgettable championship showdown, this episode is packed with laughs, suspense, and an incredible look at how dogs learn.

This week on Animal Party with Deborah Wolfe, listener questions spark a fascinating and funny deep dive into the minds of our pets—featuring special guest Stanley Coren, author of The Intelligence of Dogs. Can dogs really have OCD? Are we over-labeling our pets with human psychology—or are science and behavior more connected than we think? From Prozac for pups to the surprising truth about breed instincts, Deb and Dr. Coren explore how genetics, lifestyle, and training shape behavior. You'll also learn why a bored Border Collie might redecorate your house, how to choose the right breed for your life, and whether 21 days is really enough to break a bad habit (spoiler: not even close!). The Poodle has a reputation problem — not because of what it does, but because of what we decided it looked like. For most people, the word triggers pom-poms, bows, and a dog that rides in a handbag. That image took root in the French aristocracy of the 18th century and never fully left, even as the dog underneath it remained one of the most capable working breeds ever produced. Its name comes from the German Pudelhund — splashing dog. It was a cold-water retriever built for the marshes of Central Europe, diving into freezing rivers to retrieve waterfowl. The iconic Continental Clip was originally field engineering: shaved hindquarters to reduce drag, fur left over joints and organs to protect against hypothermia. Function disguised by centuries of fashion. In 1994, Stanley Coren ranked 138 dog breeds by working and obedience intelligence. The Border Collie placed first. The Poodle placed second. It learns new commands in fewer than five repetitions and obeys known commands at a 95 percent or better rate. That same intelligence is the source of its most common behavioral problems. A Poodle in an under-stimulating environment doesn't get bored — it gets anxious. It reads the emotional state of every person in the room, amplifies what it finds, and fills any vacuum of structure with behavior the owner didn't ask for. This episode also covers the Poodle's hidden role in the designer breed industry — how the genetics that everyone wants in a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle came from a breed people still dismiss as too fancy — and what it actually takes to give a Poodle the life it needs in a Manila condo, a Batangas heat wave, and a household run by a yaya who may not know what she's looking at.

Tucker recounts first meeting Kyle in Nevada and discusses overcoming nerves by being proud of who he is and willing to approach strangers. The conversation focuses heavily on working cow dogs—Border Collies and Kelpies—contrasting practical ranch dogs with trial dogs, and explaining how dogs extend a crew's effectiveness when gathering and trailing cattle. Tucker describes leading a crew at age 22 on the 450,000-acre, unfenced Arapaho Ranch, dealing with extremely wild, feral cattle and dangerous bulls, sorting and shipping slick bulls and old steers, and the challenges of management from the office. He explains how cattle are "trained" through regular handling and trailing, then shares his approach to making money riding outside horses while saving, staying debt-free, and aiming to eventually own land.   Topics 01:45 Meeting Kyle First Time 03:29 Making Friends Fast 05:42 Kelpie Power Talk 08:45 Favorite Dogs And Tools 12:08 Dogs On The Job 16:31 Using Dogs With Crews 19:34 Cowboy As Storyteller 22:19 Cow Boss At 22 23:49 Wild Arapaho Ranch 31:46 Culling Feral Bulls 34:45 Training Cattle Year Round 39:52 Better Handling Cattle 41:25 Range Roping Wreck Story 46:48 Horsemanship Life Focus 48:00 Making Money Riding 48:42 Saving and Self Reliance 52:32 Work Ethic and Growth 54:21 Animals Over Drama 56:40 Stay Green Stay Humble 01:00:24 Family Roots and Mom 01:06:50 Five Year Cowboy Plan 01:11:31 Favorite Horse Loss 01:14:46 Getting Horses to Tucker 01:16:56 Closing Reflections

Border Collies are often described as “high-energy dogs”, but in reality their behaviour is usually shaped by something much deeper: whether their core needs are being met.In this episode, I talk about the five needs that I believe are essential for Border Collies to feel balanced and fulfilled. These include their need to use their brain, their need to run and move freely, their need to properly switch off and rest, their need for social connection, and their need for routine and predictability. When one of these needs is missing, behaviour often starts to wobble. What many people interpret as “too much energy” is often simply an unmet need.In this episode, I break down each of these five areas and explain why understanding them can completely change the way you look at your dog's behaviour and daily life.If you live with a Border Collie, this episode will help you better understand what your dog may actually be missing.Join My New Class Here:https://thatlldoacademy.newzenler.com/courses/training-skills-for-busy-brainsJoin the Collie Club with Crufts Discount:https://thatlldoacademy.newzenler.com/courses/the-collie-club?coupon=CruftsCollieDiscountLearn More About The Collie Club:https://thatlldoacademy.com/online-academy/To follow me on social media:Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/ThatllDoAcademy/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/martina_bordercollie_geek/

A Dog's Life with Anna Webb

With Crufts just three days away, we're so excited to be chatting to Naturaw's Founder, Jess Warneken, on the company's sponsorship of the Flyball team, Junkyard Dogs. Competing at this year's most prestigious global canine event, we're also joined by the team captain, Cheryl Quinn, who discusses why the pressure is on! She explains the training involved - and that's not just for the dogs - and why it's such a community driven sport and highly competitive. Teaching the dogs to remain focused, takes time and commitment with weekly training sessions.  Cheryl believes any dog can enjoy Flyball, but at a high competition level, the dogs are chosen for their commitment to their team spirit, and for their individual skills. Some have more speed to gain time, whilst others have others combine speed with accuracy that's needed to prevent any faults. Every Flyball team must incorporate at least one pure bred dog , which in Junkyard's case is a Border Collie, others can be any cross breed, with Lurchers being firm favourites.Naturaw is thrilled to support Junkyard Dogs! As the sport requires dogs to be in peak condition to win with speed and precision, the  team is fed Naturaw for this reason. Helping to fuel them for optimum health from the inside out.No matter what,  it's about having fun, the dogs have been acclimatised to the atmosphere , the roar of the crowds and the many distractions - sights , sounds and smells  that can overwhelm many dogs. Andrew shares how he turned dog walking into a full-time career, how he races with both his own dogs and client dogs, and why he films mushing events across the US and Canada. Robert and Andrew talk about dog behavior, non-traditional mushing breeds, building a camera rig for racing, and what it takes to produce high-quality videos from 20 terabytes of footage. Andrew also gives insight into the community, the races he attends, and his philosophy on putting dog welfare first.

The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

My wife Joy is a creature of habit. She has a rule. After Thanksgiving, nobody goes to a restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner until every single piece of Thanksgiving food is gone. Magically, it always lasts right through Sunday evening. One year we went to someone else's house for Thanksgiving. Joy brought leftovers home. The next day she went to the store, came back, and started cooking. I'm thinking you've been cooking for days. You brought leftovers home. What are you cooking? She said she's cooking leftovers. She purchased a small turkey and all the ingredients to keep her routine for the weekend. Featured Story I wanted a dog that looked good in my Jeep. Got an Australian Shepherd named Levi because Border Collies are crazy and Aussies are just stubborn. Turns out I should've gotten the crazy dog because the stubborn one is exactly like his dad. I made rookie mistakes training Levi. One day my trainer said something that changed everything. For a dog, one time means all the time. Every time you let them do something new, they're just going to keep doing it. That applies to more than dogs. Joi schedules everything. I literally schedule a spontaneous Saturday date for her. I tell my wife to put in her predictable routine that we're going to be spontaneous on Saturday so she's okay with it. Don't surprise her. A couple years ago we went elsewhere for Thanksgiving and Joy had a real problem. She has a routine. When a certain time of year comes, she gets the recipes out and does the thing. Now she's not doing the thing. The look on her face when I figured out what she was doing. Cheating leftovers. She was lying to me about leftovers. Important Points For a dog, one time means all the time, and that principle applies to building habits and routines in your own life too. What makes you happy might seem crazy to someone else, but if it brings you joy, just do what you do. Respecting other people's routines and quirks is easier when you understand they need those patterns to be happy. Memorable Quotes "For a dog, one time means all the time. Every time you let him do something new, they're just going to keep doing it." "I literally schedule a spontaneous Saturday date for her. She has to know we're going to be spontaneous on Saturday." "Do leftovers make you happy? What makes you happy? Do what you do. Just do what you do." Scott's Three-Step Approach Understand that consistency creates happiness for some people, even if their routines seem excessive to you. Figure out what actually makes you happy and build those patterns into your life without apology. If you're married to someone with strong routines, just go with it and maybe hide half the Thanksgiving food so everyone gets leftovers. Chapter Notes 1:15 - Holiday season stress and choosing to be happy 2:18 - Getting Levi: wanted a dog for my Jeep 3:17 - Dog training wisdom that applies to everything 3:50 - Joi is a creature of habit and routine 4:51 - The serious nature of the leftover problem 5:53 - She was cooking leftovers that weren't leftovers 7:05 - This year's solution: double the food, hide half Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify Email: support@motivationtomove.com Main Website: https://motivationtomove.com YouTube: https://youtube.com/dailyboostpodcast Instagram: @heyscottsmith Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/motivationtomove Facebook Group: https://DailyBoostPodcast.com/facebook Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textWhen that adorable new puppy or rescue dog joins your household, the dream is harmony, but the reality often involves chaos, stress, and sometimes even conflict between your existing dogs and the newcomer. What if there was a better way?Crufts Champion, Expert Naughty but Nice Dog Trainer, Lauren Langman sits down with Linda, a competitive obedience trainer who recently introduced a tiny one-kilogram poodle puppy to her household of three Border Collies - including one particularly reactive dog who typically doesn't tolerate newcomers. The surprise? Linda reports the integration has been "simple and straightforward," though certainly requiring work and knowledge. This candid conversation reveals the stark contrast between traditional approaches to dog introductions and modern, science-based methods. Linda shares how her journey through positive training transformed her understanding of canine body language, management techniques, and the importance of advocating for resident dogs. You'll discover practical strategies like using neutral territory for first meetings, creating safe spaces with gates and crates, and managing resources to prevent tension.Perhaps most valuable is Linda's insight into reading subtle canine signals - from a Border Collie's widening eyes indicating rising arousal to a puppy's resource guarding behaviours that need gentle intervention. Her month-long integration process demonstrates that patience yields results; her once-reactive Border Collie now plays chase games with the puppy she initially feared. What's a month compared to a lifetime of positive and fun interaction?Whether you're considering adding a new dog to your family or struggling with integration challenges right now, this episode offers actionable advice that respects both the newcomer and your resident dogs. Most importantly, you'll gain the confidence to set your timeline rather than rushing based on others' expectations.Ready to transform your multi-dog household management? In this nonprofit podcast story, I share about a personal experience and then tap into the beauty of matching rescueres with rescues! I am not sure who rescues whom! I don't know about you, but I think about dog rescue as a really wonderful thing to do although it has its challenges; our dog, Molly is a rescue and I guess that she was not just abandoned, but abused, she probably had a set of puppies and we think was about 2 or 3 when we adopted her. I have never seen a dog eat as fast as Molly - you could feel the trauma in her frenzy as she inhaled her bowl of food - she's only 12 lbs and she can eat. I'm guessing because she can't talk that she's thinking this could be her last meal. She is a love & simultaneously a heartache when you witness this fear in her approach to eating and pretty much everything else. She's a challenge because she pees literally wherever she wants - hence few rugs in our house since she tends to like soft spots, but anywhere will do if she can't get herself outside, and even if she can but feels something is in the way, she will resort to a way of life that is based on having lived outside, hence eat whatever you can find and pee wherever is convenient - she is fear-based and survival-based - I can't say I blame her. She is now 12 1/2 years old and sadly, still eats as if she will never get another meal, eats whatever she can find outside, and has the most blood curdleing scream when anyone touches her backside or even when something, even a leaf brushes up against her without her knowledge- we've all gotten used to it over the years and it is only when a visitor comes over and she screeches with panic, that the visitor feels like she's stepped on her and our response is always, Molly, you're fine. I remember when we first got her and she would only go to our dog, Max, 2 years her senior - he seemed safe to her and thank goodness loved her - they became two peas in a pod and when a stranger would come by as long as Max would go up to the stranger with a sense of safety or comfort, would Molly follow. Her trauma has stayed with her and yet, I know in my heart that she is comforted by the life we've given her and that she knows she is wanted and loved - animals sense when you want to comfort them - they can be challenging when they have been in a world of pain and mistrust and we are asking them to trust us - in some ways, that's like people - the more consistent I am with Molly, the more relaxed she generally is. Yet, that loud-pitched, blood-curdling scream is something she will never give up.      My guest today will share much more, but in reading about herders, I can see why the matching process has to be so targeted to ensure both a happy foster dog and a happy foster home. Here are a few interesting things to note if you are considering fostering or adopting a herder. Herders specifically Border Collies can clear a 5+ foot fence and are known as escape artists - my guess is that they may be escaping if their owner isn't nearby as they tend to be very attached to their owners and become anxious when the owner isn't present; they have a great deal of energy and are often misperceived as stubborn or even neurotic, and difficult to train due to their sensitive nature and desire to be connected to one person versus being part of a family. Some of these reasons are why many Border Collies are abandoned at shelters and elsewhere. Hence, the need arose and was filled by 3 women who joined together to start Helping Herders Rescue. Helping Herders Rescue's mission is to match herders to humans in Southern California; they are a foster-based program dedicated to helping dogs recover, prepare for a family, and find great homes. This is particularly challenging with herding breeds, and they are often misunderstood. For more information, check out their website: www.helpingherdersrescue.org

Send us a textWhat makes some dogs able to handle anything life throws at them while others crumble under pressure? The answer lies in resilience – that magical quality that transforms anxious, reactive dogs into confident companions who can accompany you anywhere.Lauren Langman and special guest Amanda dive deep into how to build rock-solid resilience in dogs of all ages. They share personal stories of their most bomb-proof dogs – from Tokyo the unflappable Border Collie who could sleep through chaos to Salty the adventurous Labrador who sailed boats and rode gondolas without a care in the world. These weren't just lucky genetic accidents but the result of deliberate, thoughtful training and lifestyle choices. The conversation unpacks the fascinating "stress bucket" concept – a model for understanding how dogs process and manage stressors. You'll discover the five critical components that build resilience: optimism, thinking in arousal, arousal control, calmness, and disengagement. Each component can be developed through specific games and management strategies that transform how your dog perceives and responds to the world around them.Perhaps most eye-opening is the discussion of "rehearsal" – how what we allow our dogs to practice becomes their default behavior. Whether it's a Border Collie working sheep, a spaniel flushing birds, or a terrier hunting vermin – understanding your training goals before allowing certain behaviors to be rehearsed can make all the difference in creating the companion you want. The hosts emphasize that resilience training isn't just for puppies. Even rescue dogs and older canines can develop these skills through patient, consistent work.Ready to create a dog who can truly share your adventures? This episode provides the roadmap to an enriched life for both you and your canine companion. As Amanda beautifully summarizes: "Resilience leads to an enriched life for your dog."Support the showIf you're loving the podcast, you'll love our NEW Sexier than a Squirrel Dog Training Challenge even more!
