On October 2nd, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Guardian Angels. This day is also the anniversary of the founding of Opus Dei. To celebrate, we are sharing a reading from Volume 7 of the In Conversation with God series.
What if the reason you've never really “heard God” isn't because He's silent—but because you've been approaching the Bible the wrong way? In this episode, I share the simple mindset shift that turned Scripture from silent ink on a page into real conversations with the living God. Each episode, I walk you through practical questions to ask while reading that unlock intimacy, clarity, and the sense that God is actually speaking back. If you've ever wondered, “Why doesn't God talk to me?”—this podcast may change everything. This guide will help you turn every Bible reading into a real conversation with God. After thousands of years, Michael Cohen finally snagged the Mea Culpa guest of a lifetime, the one and only God. In a wide-ranging divine conversation, Cohen and God confront America's growing epidemic of political violence after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Trump's reckless push to federalize local police, and the escalating dangers of authoritarianism. God doesn't hold back on Trump's lies, Republican scapegoating, or the toxic weaponization of faith for political gain. From school shootings to immigration crackdowns, they explore how fear and division are tearing the country apart, and what moral lessons are being ignored in the process. Equal parts sobering and darkly funny, this episode proves that even God is worried about the state of American democracy. In honor of Labor Day, Father Edward Hathaway, the Rector of the Basilica, reads a meditation from the book by Francis Fernandez-Carvajal called “In Conversation with God: Meditations for Each Day of the Year,” Volume 4, weeks 13 to 23. This particular meditation is called “Loving our Daily Work: The Example of Saint Paul.”
Prayer is not a quick voicemail to God but a real, ongoing conversation with our Heavenly Father. The Bible teaches that effective prayer is fervent, passionate, sincere, and heartfelt, not routine or casual. For our prayers to be powerful, they must align with God's will, and the Holy Spirit helps guide us when we don't know what to ask. God invites us to make our requests known, not because He needs the information, but because prayer deepens our trust and relationship with Him. When combined with thanksgiving, prayer becomes truly effective, unlocking God's answers and transforming our lives.
Today, August 6th, we celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration with an excerpt from In Conversation with God, Volume 7.
Fr. Bill has an unexpected conversation with God about the Lord's Prayer. Readings at this Mass: Gn 18:20–32 | Col 2:12–14 | Lk 11:1–13
Have you ever been religiously kidnapped? If it were to happen to you, would you even know it? This Sunday we'll study a passage in Colossians that lays out the warning signs of religious "captivity" and points us to the path of true spiritual freedom. If you want to live free, join us Sunday to find out how!
For this third lesson in our series, Stéphanie Rousselle invites us back into the book of Malachi, exploring its lively conversation between God and the Israelites. She likens the dialogue to a "ping pong, tennis match" that embodies a series of question-and-answer exchanges, both from God and His people. This format inspires reflections on the nature of prayer as an honest and open dialogue with God. You are invited to purchase the workbook that contains everything you need to take your experience of the Book of Malachi deeper! For each of the six lessons, you will find a complete listening guide, questions to go deeper (on your own, with a friend, or a group), as well as a worksheet to study further themes. Go to https://www.gospelspice.com/malachi for more. The book of Malachi teaches us about the depth and authenticity required in prayer. It challenges us to ask hard questions, ones that reveal our true desires and convictions, paralleling the Israelites who inquire about justice and God's presence in difficult times. This lesson focuses on understanding these questions within the context of Malachi chapters two and three. A key point discussed is the Israelites' question about justice, "Where is the God of justice?" This is a pivotal inquiry situated within a broader narrative of self-awareness and repentance among the Israelites. They grapple with topics such as their faithlessness, particularly in the context of divorce, which Scripture frames as a profound societal betrayal within their culture. Stéphanie draws connections between the book of Malachi and other Old or New Testament teachings, such as those found in Micah and Romans, highlighting themes of justice, grace, and God's redemptive love through Christ. The Israelites, through their treacherous actions towards one another, reveal a deeper spiritual unfaithfulness to God. The prophetic role of Malachi points to John the Baptist, the latter of whom prepares the way for Jesus, the ultimate messenger. We are invited to consider our own calling as modern-day messengers of God, akin to John the Baptist, as we share the gospel and prepare for Christ's return. Stéphanie discusses the contrast between justice and grace, illustrating that while justice, in its purest form, would condemn us, it is through grace, offered by Jesus, that we are saved. This grace is of utmost importance in the spiritual life, echoed through Scripture and the personal prayers of faith leaders like King David. Closing, in prayer Stéphanie asks for a renewed sense of gratitude and reverence for God's grace and for guidance to be faithful messengers of His word, underlining a central message of the book of Malachi: finding the God of grace in Christ and extending His message of redemption to the world. Details and registration here: https://www.gospelspice.com/prayer There are a few things in our Christian life that we know we should do more, or at least better – and prayer just might top the list. Prayer is a mystery. Why would a conversation with a human have any influence on God's eternal, sovereign plan? It defies logic, and beckons love. How can God, the Almighty Lord of Hosts, be this close, this personal? It defies understanding, and beckons involvement. But, lack of time, inspiration, and discipline, combined with the ruthless tyranny of our busy lives, push prayer to the periphery, to the “one day I'll get to it” pile. And yet, we can excel at what we endeavor to undertake. So, why isn't prayer more of a spiritual priority? Could we develop a mindset around prayer that made it attractive, inspiring, even maybe delightful? What if we attuned our spiritual ears to listen to God, and our spiritual eyes to see His provision? As an unassuming student, I'm going to humbly offer to share the little I have learned from others about the joy of prayer. I will give us theology, practical tips, and useful resources, sharing what works for me as we, together, learn to pray. If you find prayer intimidating, or if your lack of prayer makes you feel guilty or “less than,” then this is the place for you! If you have been a student of prayer for many years, this is the place for you too! If you have breath in your lungs, then prayer can become one of the deepest joys of your day. Don't miss out! A PERSPECTIVE ABOUT PRAYER To pray is to believe that God not only hears, but that He responds. It is to stand in the gap for a broken world, wielding the authority of Christ, empowered by the Spirit, and trusting in the goodness of the Father. The question is not whether prayer works, but whether we are willing to pray the kinds of prayers that invite God's Kingdom into the darkest places of the earth—and of our own hearts. We may never fully understand the mechanics of prayer, or how it intersects with God's sovereignty, but we are not called to understand everything. We are called to be faithful. And faithfulness means showing up—in prayer, in persistence, in expectation. So today, let us pray not only for the comfort of our hearts, but for the transformation of the world. Let us take our place as image-bearers, co-laborers, and co-heirs. Let us believe that God is still listening—and still acting. Because He is. There's only one way to find out what might happen when we truly pray like this. Let's begin. THE MINDSET BEHIND THIS COURSE Before we begin, let me tell you the obvious: I don't really know how to pray. I'm a humble student and absolute beginner at the holy endeavor that is prayer. So, this course isn't really about what I've learned, or any wisdom I might have gathered. But, I've sat at the feet of many prayer warriors over the decades, through books and teachings. So, I'll share what I learned from them. Humility is going to be our primary heart posture! With each lesson, I will offer a few thoughts, practices, and ideas – with much humility, and not taking myself too seriously. I will also share her favorite books and resources about prayer. FInally, I will introduce you to some of the most influential prayer warriors of our history as the Body of Christ. Most importantly, I will invite YOU to pray! Learning to pray comes from praying. Our humble ambition is to inspire you to pray, and to give you a few tips on how to do that. Then, it's up to you! Prayer is a lifelong endeavor. Let's make it delightful together! "It was terrifying. The effect was paralysis. I was fully conscious, in pain, but unable to move, speak, or see. I could not even open my eyelids. The only one I could truly communicate with was God." ---------- What if the only thing you could do was feel pain—and hear? That became Robert Koonce's reality after an autoimmune attack left him completely paralyzed. He couldn't move, speak, blink, or even clear his throat. All he could do was endure—and pray. In this episode, Robert, a man of deep faith, working within the Diocese of Cleveland, recounts his yearlong journey through suffering, silence, and supernatural encounters. Unable to interact with the world, his only true conversation was with God—and that dialogue went deeper than ever before. From spiritual consolation to demonic deception, Robert's story reminds us that even when the body is bound, the soul is free to rise. ---------- Share Your Story If you have a Touched by Heaven moment that you would like to share with Trapper, please leave us a note at https://touchedbyheaven.net/contact Our listeners look forward to hearing about life-changing encounters and miraculous stories every week. This week, we're so excited to welcome Adam Miller and Rosalynde Welch to talk about their brand-new book, Seven Visions. This book is an exploration of seven visionary experiences in the Doctrine and Covenants—moments where heaven and earth meet in powerful and sometimes surprising ways. Through these visions, Adam and Rosalynde invite us to consider how we engage with scripture and revelation in our own lives. In this conversation, we explore what it means to truly see God's face and hear god's voice and that so often, revelation comes by paying attention to what is closest to us—the relationships and experiences that challenge us, stretch us, and ultimately transform us. Adam and Rosalynde suggest that rather than treating scripture as something fixed and unchanging, we can approach it as an active, unfolding conversation. As Rosalynde put it, “The meaning of scripture is not fixed inside the covers of the book, but it unfolds in the space between the reader and the text.” We love their insights about passages of scripture that feel unsettling. Could our discomfort itself be a catalyst for revelation? And could the very questions we feel most compelled to ask be what expands our capacity to recognize Christ as He truly is—and to see the world more as He sees it?This was such a rich and expansive conversation, and we hope it gives you a new lens for engaging with scripture and revelation. And with that, here's our conversation with Adam Miller and Rosalynde Welch.Affiliate link: https://amzn.to/44mK4Qa

I was listening to Fr. Mike Schmitz talking about the five second rule in regard to food on the floor. But, at the same time I was reading a book about a different five second rule that can literally change your life, in five seconds. ---------- Hi there! Trapper Jack here. You are familiar with the five second rule, right? It's when you drop a piece of food on the floor and proclaim, ‘five second rule,' and it now becomes OK to eat. But there is another five second rule. While talking to Jenny, a God incident occurred, and a reference to a book called the Five Second Rule. Jenny heard something that she needed to hear to change her prayer life and deepen her relationship with God. It's one of those Touched by Heaven moments that's within the Touched by Heaven Podcast. It's always so cool when it happens. And it happens more than once in this episode. Amid all of this is Jenny's story. We see the hand of God in finding her husband. We see the hand of God in Jenny's dreams. We once again see how our angels protect us and help guide us. I love this conversation Because everything we want and pray for is right there at our fingertips … In about five seconds. Today's reading comes from Volume 1 of In Conversation with God for Wednesday of the third week of Advent.
In this episode, Malcolm K Nair describes his negative life path which led to him having a drug-influenced car accident. While clinically dead, he was able to leave his physical body while watching the scene play out from above himself and the paramedics. He describes having foreknowledge and being able to see multiple people from different regional points, entering a dark void, then light, and coming in contact with spiritual entities and God as well. He also describes his own physical rehabilitation and how he now harnesses the powers he returned with to help others.
To celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States, we are sharing the Thanksgiving meditation from In Conversation with God. The reading is found before the November entries if you are looking for it in your copy.
