Interview by Kris PetersNothing More are a band on the rise. And rapidly.Since the release of their seventh studio album, Carnal, last year, Nothing More have become the darlings of the hard rock scene, with three songs from that album already taking out top position on Rock Radio. And what does a band worth their promotional dollar do when they strike gold on a release? Yep, you guessed it, re-release the album as a deluxe special and draw in a whole new bunch of fans while placating existing lovers of their music. While more often than not such a move reeks of cashing on for the sake of it, with Carnal Deluxe, Nothing More have expanded on the quality provided the first time around, plus added a new song to keep diehard fans happy.HEAVY spent some time with frontman Jonny Hawkins earlier this week to go over Carnal Deluxe and why it is superior to the original version. We start by asking if Carnal was received as well as the band hoped."We knew this was going to be a strong album," he affirmed. "We felt a lot of confidence in our bones about this one. It just had good songs, and when we put it out, it performed as good as we had hoped, if not better. We have three number ones in a row, and now we have the song Freefall that will be climbing the charts, and we're - knock on wood - but we're hoping for a fourth number one."We ask if the anticipation and excitement levels are the same for a Deluxe release as opposed to the initial album."I'd say typically not," he smiled honestly. "Deluxes are fun little ways to kind of boost the album and push it back up to the top of people's streaming platforms. But that's the main goal, I think, is just reminding people and getting them to stream it again. I mean, for us, we did have a feature on a song called Freefall with Chris Daughtry. So that was kind of cool, because we hadn't released that version of the song yet.And then we had some cool remixes and stuff that were like good workout tracks or things to drive fast to that we didn't have on it before."In the full interview, Jonny spoke more about Carnal Deluxe and the value of being able to release upgraded versions of an album. We ran through each of the five bonus tracks individually, and Johnny told us more about each song and the new versions available. We spoke about K9s For Warriors and the organisations success in dealing with mental health and why Nothing More chose to help them, working with David Draimen from Disturbed, the band's pleasure at having Chris Daughtry on one song, the new song We're All Gonna Die and how it came to be on the album, touring plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Show SummaryOn this episode of Behind the Mission, we feature a conversation with Carl Cricco, Chief Executive Officer of K9s For Warriors, the nation's largest provider of service dogs for veterans. About Today's Guest Prior to joining K9s, Carl worked at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum as a senior vice president of marketing, ensuring the stories from that day were never forgotten. Living just blocks from the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, that day left an indelible mark, as it did for many. He has spent much of his career ensuring Americans never forget 9/11, and at K9s For Warriors, he is committed to ensuring those who fought in conflicts resulting from that day and others, are also not forgotten. Before taking on the role of chief executive officer, Carl was the chief marketing and development officer at K9s for two years, effectively sharing the incredible impact of the K9s mission on both veterans and dogs — also increasing revenues by 70% in a one-year period. Carl has spent the last ten years in executive leadership, primarily in marketing with previous work featured by the Wall Street Journal and Advertising Week.Early in his career, Carl worked at leading media companies, including ABC News. Cricco holds a B.A. from New York University and an M.B.A. from New York University Stern School of Business, where he specialized in marketing. He was born and raised in Hoboken, NJ, and although he misses his local Italian deli and not needing a car to get around, he wouldn't trade the Florida sun to get those things back. He is a family man, spending much of his free time with his two-year-old son and amazing wife Emily.Links Mentioned In This EpisodeK9s For Warriors Web SitePsychArmor Resource of the WeekThis week's PsychArmor resource of the week is the PsychArmor course, How to Interact with Assistance Animals. I Kissed Alcohol Goodbye: Let’s Break Up With Booze Together!
Happy Fall, Sober Family, and huge thanks to all of you who joined the IKAGB community over the past few months during Season 2... Normally I have Owl by my side in the studio at home, but I'm recording this trailer for Season 3 just outside Jacksonville, Florida — I'm spending the bulk of October here training with my new PTSD service dog, Spruce, who decided to launch himself into my lap during the trailer! Shout out to www.k9sforwarriors.org, the phenomenal non-profit which has been providing military veterans like me with service dogs for over a decade — if you want to donate to a worthy cause and know your money will be put to good use, K9s For Warriors is a great option for your end-of-year giving. From November through January, I'm going to be interviewing more fascinating sober guests, including a former Marine and MMA fighter, an award-winning British actor/writer/producer, fellow sober podcast hosts, and many others, including the one and only Kayla Lyons, one of the OGs of the Instagram sober community and founder of both the 1000 Hours Dry movement and more recently the JoinSoberish organization. Reminder that all episodes are available on my YouTube channel of the same name — you'll get to see Spruce! Since this is the podcast for newly sober people learning to love ourselves instead of booze, the question every guest will get at the end of each episode in Season 3 is: “How do you love yourself in sobriety?” This is an especially important question during the holidays, because while we're all trained to focus on everyone else's needs with gifts and visits and other kinds of supposedly fun but all-too-often stressful stuff, we can easily be more hard-pressed than usual to find and make time for ourselves, let alone to figure out how to love ourselves. This is also when the “easy button” of alcohol likes to present itself as a solution to our problems, and so if we're going to not only survive the 2022 holidays but thrive our way through them, we're going to need each other, and I'm confident that my upcoming guests are going to encourage and inspire us toward self-love, which is the ultimate gift that we can give to ourselves — and to others, for that matter. Special shout-out to my OG subscribers to the IKAGB Premium plan — to learn more about the six perks you get for just $6/month, visit www.ikissedalcoholgoodbye.supercast.com. If you know anyone who might benefit like you have from IKAGB, please serve them by sending the show information their way — and please, if there is any way that I can serve you, then you'd better DM me on Instagram @IKAGB or email me at IKAGB@gmail.com. I'm planning on releasing Season 3, Episode 1 around the first of November, so until then, stay connected with your sober family, whoever they may be. Until then, Owl (and Spruce) and I send you our best sober vibes by saying “Goodbye Alcohol, and Hello Life!” Much love to you all, and peace. :-)

The boys have a very special episode this week. In honor and in memory of Andy's younger brother, Raymond Diaz, the boys are talking about the 1997 Paul Verhoeven sci-fi masterpiece, Starship Troopers. Get ready for how the movie about bugs, violence, and totalitarianism changed the trajectory of Raymond's life. While a serious episode, the boys honor Ray in the right way, by having fun and talking about one of his favorite movies. A movie where Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico), Denise Richards (Carmen Ibanez), and Dina Meyer (Dizzy Flores) play teenagers somehow and Jake Busey (Ace Levy) plays multiple fiddles. Don't let Neil Patrick Harris in a Nazi Unifrom distract you from the fact that this movie is awesome. Consider visiting Raymond's GoFundMe page at https://gofund.me/ef95ab27 - Donations will be going to cover the costs of his funeral and final expenses. We will also be donating some of the funds to K9s For Warriors and The Wounded Warrior Project. And a small personal request from Andy: Reach out to a loved one today and tell them what they mean to you. Life is short… hold your loved ones close. More than 20 veterans die from suicide every day in the U.S. This is as wrong as it is shocking – that the men and women who will give their lives for this country come back and take their own. Jeff Simmons sat down last week with the CEO of K9s For Warriors, Rory Diamond, and Greg Wells to talk about the power of Service Dogs and the program that has led them to be the #1 Service Dog provider in the country for veterans living with PTSD, MST and/or TBI. 92% of their veteran graduates reduce or completely eliminate prescription medication when they have their prescription on four legs.

Responding Well Under Pressure (0:00:00) 9/11 was a horrific day in our country, but it was not the first terrorist attack from Al Qaeda the US has faced. Less than a year prior, on October 12th 2000, the USS Cole was bombed off the coast of Yemen. In this tragic attack, we lost 17 sailors and 37 more were injured, yet through the heroic efforts of the crew & commander they were able to save the ship and minimize further casualties. That commander was Kirk Lippold, and we are honored to be speaking with him today, in recognition of the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack. Since the event, Kirk has been all across the country teaching people how to respond well under pressure and what good leadership looks like. We are excited to hear about some of his knowledge and expertise today. Supporting Veterans (0:19:40) Army strong-we've all heard the slogan. It's the slogan of those who have dedicated our lives to supporting us and protecting our freedoms. However, many of our returned soldiers face a less than smooth transition when they return home. Our veteran population is at risk for homelessness, PTSD, and mental illness among other things. The good news is, there are things we can do to help. Here to discuss how we can be strong for the army and meaningfully support our veterans is Director of VA Northern California Health Care System, David Stockwell. Wounded Warrior Project (0:39:53) Our veterans experience things none of us could ever imagine, and we're so grateful for their sacrifice. But what do they really go through when they come home and what support do they need? Today we're joined by retired Sergeant Deven Schei who served in Afghanistan but was sent home after being injured by four 80-millimeter rockets. Since then he has gone through an intense recovery process and become an inspirational spokesperson for the Wounded Warrior Project. He joins us today to discuss his story, helping veterans, and the organization that's empowering them. K9s for Warriors (0:52:50) They say a dog is a man's best friend. And for thousands of military veterans, nothing is truer than that. At least 20 veterans who served after the 9/11 attacks commit suicide daily. To combat veteran suicide and the traumatic impact of PTSD, an organization called K9s for Warriors has been pairing veterans with rescued shelter dogs. These dogs are then trained to be service dogs for their human counterparts. Joining us today is Greg Wells, the Manager of Programs at K9s for Warriors. He joins us to talk about how these service dogs are helping veterans. Trees for Troops (1:28:42) We are quickly approaching the holidays, which means we get to spend more time with our family. However, for deployed military troops, this is not the case. Many will be away from home this season. So, what can we do to show our support and gratitude for those who serve our country and are unable to be with their family during the holidays? Well, you might consider joining with Trees for Troops and sending Christmas trees to our soldiers and their families. Here to tell us about this organization and how we can help is the executive director of Trees for Troops, Rick Dungey.
Today, we discuss tips for responding under pressure, how to best support struggling veterans, Deven Schei talks about his experience in Afghanistan, how dogs help veterans with PTSD, and making Christmas special for active military.
Tonight on the episode, host Bill Crocker opens the book to his own PTSD journey, and explores some common misconceptions about PTSD, and hopes to help you find the strength to carry on.
