Email overload! This week's quiz: On 24 August, I told you a story about a sign I saw on a French highway this summer. On most highways across France, there are illuminated signboards that tell you if there's an accident ahead, encourage you to take a break from driving, or remind you of the speed limit. The messages change according to what information is deemed necessary for drivers.During the Olympic games, the signs said: “Remember: 130 kilometres per hour ... speed is for Léon”. You were to write in and tell me who Léon is, and why the French said speed was OK for him.The answer is: Léon is that French human fish, Léon Marchand. He won four Gold Medals in swimming this year … the 200-meter medley, 200-metre breaststroke, the 200-metre butterfly, and the 400-metre medley. He became the sixth Olympic swimmer to win four gold medals at a single Games.Léon Marchand is the world record holder in the long course 400-metres individual medley; the Olympic record holder in the 200-metres butterfly, the 200-metres breaststroke, and the 200-metres individual medley; and the French record holder in the long course 200-metre individual medley, 200-metre butterfly and 200-metre breaststroke. The young man is fast – watching him swim was incredible. See why the French government would tell us to be careful with our speed, but Léon could go as fast as he wished? In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by Hans Verner Lollike from Hedehusene, Denmark: “The Paris 24 Olympic Games are over, but if you had a chance to win a Gold Medal, in which sport would it have been?”Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us! The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Alan Holder from the Isle of Wight, England. Alan is also this week's bonus question winner. Congratulations, Alan!Saleem Akhtar is a winner this week. Saleem is the president of the RFI Seven Stars Radio Listeners Club in District Chiniot, Pakistan.Pakistan! Congratulations on your amazing javelineer, Arshad Nadeem. Nadeem made history for Pakistan by becoming the first Pakistani to win an individual Olympic gold medal. The fire that killed 101 people and destroyed much of the town of Lahaina on Maui Island left financial, environmental, and emotional damage in its wake that will require years and significant resources to overcome. Not least on the list is a mountain of toxic burned debris that residents and officials are having trouble finding a suitable place for. Officials are studying whether the charred landscape will harm the delicate coral reef just offshore. Somewhere in the country, a new wildfire appears at least once a week during the most active season, and many of those leave lasting implications for tribes and residents. GUESTS Dr. Andrea Kealoha (Native Hawaiian), assistant professor of oceanography at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Don Gentry (Klamath Tribes), natural resources specialist for and former chairman the Klamath Tribes Bodie Shaw (Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs), deputy regional director for the Northwest Region of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Blaze Lovell, reporter for the Honolulu Civil Beat
The Northern and Western Regional Assembly (NWRA) is urging the government to fast-track the delivery of 13 major infrastructure projects in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland after a new study found that the region is now on par with the least well-off areas of Europe in terms of infrastructure. New research by the NWRA has revealed that investment in transport, health, education, housing and energy infrastructure in the Northern and Western Region is languishing far below that of its counterparts in Ireland and across the continent - with transport infrastructure ranked the 17th worst of 234 European regions. To address these infrastructure deficits, the NWRA believes a policy of "Positive Discrimination" is needed to deliver regional equality across Ireland and to take pressure off an ever-expanding Greater Dublin Area. Such a policy would involve creating a Ministry for "Regional Development", which would have a significant budget for delivering key infrastructure priorities across the regions. Many countries - such as Australia, Canada, Japan, France and Brazil - have created ministerial roles specifically focused on addressing regional development inequities. The organisation's 'Regional Infrastructure Tracker has, for the first time, harnessed data from public and private sources to reveal that, since 2016, the Northern and Western Region of Ireland has received less than 10% of the nationwide total investment in infrastructure projects worth more than €1m, and just 5.7% of investment from infrastructure projects worth more than €20m, despite accounting for 17.6% of Ireland's population. In contrast, the Eastern and Midlands Region of Ireland received 66.5% of investment from projects worth more than €1m, and 75% of those worth more than €20m. As the Eastern and Midlands Region accounts for less than 50% of the population of Ireland, the NWRA believes the figures reveal an obvious bias towards the Greater Dublin Area. The NWRA is one of three regional assemblies in Ireland and represents counties Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Sligo, Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway. The Northern and Western Region of Ireland is officially classified as a "Transition Region" as it has a GDP per capita between 75% and 100% of the EU average, the only region in Ireland to hold such a status. However, the NWRA's research has found that, in terms of competitiveness, the Northern and Western Region of Ireland ranks below some regions categorised as "less developed", which are regions with a GDP per capita less than 75% of the EU average. To bridge the growing infrastructure deficit, the NWRA is demanding that the government ringfence more than half of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the Northern and Western Region of Ireland and prioritise 13 infrastructure projects for the region. These include the delivery of the Donegal T-Ten road projects and the N17 Knock to Collooney Road Scheme, as well as the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor from Athenry to Collooney. The report estimates that the total capital cost of delivering these 13 priority projects would range from €4.8 billion to €6.8 billion, which would deliver transformative benefits in areas of climate action, regional development and the all-island economy, while costing considerably less than the overall cost of the Dublin Metro. The report's other key findings include: The Northern and Western Region ranks 218th out of 234 NUTS 2 regions in terms of transport infrastructure. Its Regional Competitiveness Index score is like 'less developed' regions in Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. Patients presenting at Emergency Departments across the Northern and Western Region of Ireland are waiting longer to be admitted or discharged than the national average, with more than half of attendees at Galway University Hospital (51%) waiting more than 12 hours. Some 6,950 households on the waiting list for social housing supports from the North...

Can we fight fire with fire? The American Lung Association has released a report suggesting that this is a healthy way forward, and our Native communities have used ceremonial burns on our lands for generations. I wanted to talk to someone who lives at the intersection of all of this. For this episode, I was honored to be joined by Bodie Shaw. He is a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, and previously served as the national wildland fire director for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and has worked as the acting Chief of the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, ID. He is a veteran of the US Air Force, and previously taught at Oregon State University. He has lectured widely on tribal interests as they pertain to natural resource management. In 2008, Shaw was the first to participate in an international exchange program between the U.S. and Australian governments and lived Down Under with his family from August 2008 to March 2009 while developing a new trilateral wildland fire/bushfire agreement between the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. He currently serves as the Bureau of Indian Affairs deputy regional director of Trust Services for the Northwest Region. Today, we talk about balancing the perils and the promise of prescribed burns in wildfire-prone areas. To Do Got to Firewise.org to learn how to protect your home and family. Learn more about health impacts from prescribed burns from the ALA report “Can Prescribed Fires Mitigate Health Harm.” Tell your representatives how important it is to ensure a professional and well-funded, year round proactive approach to decreasing the risk of catastrophic wildfire. Learn more about the health of our wildland firefighters and outdoor workers by listening to “The Health of Our Heroes” episode from Season One. Learn more about the impact of wildfire smoke and how to keep you and your family safe during smoke events by listening to the “Our Health in Wildfire Season” episode from Season Two. Coty Raven Morris Coty and I met at an ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) conference and immediately connected. We both were new to the Portland area, but that wasn't why we connected - I'm not sure either of us realized we both lived in Portland when we met in Spokane, Washington. We've become good friends and this episode is two friends having a conversation over lunch (actually it was before lunch). Now, we both serve on the Northwest Region of ACDA board together and we have so much to talk about!! Friendship, choral music, balance, building healthy relationships, personal responsibility and social justice are the themes of this episode. About Coty Raven Morris Coty Raven Morris is a proud alumnus of Texas State University- San Marcos where she studied with Drs. Lynn Brinckmeyer, Jonathan Bacock, and Joey Martin. She received her Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University in the Spring of 2020 under Drs. David Rayl, Jonathan Reed, and Sandra Snow. She is currently the Visiting Assistant Professor of Choir, Music Education, and Social Justice at Portland State University. Prior to this, she was the Director of Choirs at Crosby High School in the Houston area and has served as the Outreach Choir Director at the MSU Community Music School and Music Director at Grand Ledge United Methodist Church. Her choirs received consistent Sweepstakes & Division I ratings at UIL and choral festivals. Morris was the recipient of the Hays CISD Linebarger Academic Recognition Award for 2013 & Galena Park ISD's Dazzling Diamond Award in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 for outstanding mentorship and leadership in her field. She is the Northwest Choral representative for the National Association for Music Education as well as the Community Choir Chair for the Northwest region of the American Choral Directors Association. A newly published author and composer, Morris is a sought-after clinician and speaker across the country. She has recently served as the Clinician and Headliner for Florida ACDA, Washington MEA, and Minnesota ACDA as well as the Keynote speaker for the city of Lake Oswego's Juneteenth festival. Her future engagements include the Alaska All-State Treble Choir and the Oregon Middle School Tenor Bass Choir. Morris has been a choir member of the South Texas Vocal Artists and Mirabai and has devoted over a decade of summers to working as a camp director at the Texas State, Northeastern and Lamar University summer camps. Coty Raven Morris the Founder of Being Human Together, a budding community rooted in music education striving to normalize difficult topics in our field through conversation and connection. BHT seeks to discuss traditionally taboo topics like mental health, systemic oppression, diversity, and inclusivity. Here are the takeaways Intentional relationships lead to authentic relationships that can expand, grow and evolve together If you are in relationship with someone who isn't growing and evolving - or if you aren't growing and evolving - the distance between you will continue to grow We can be a toxin to ourselves by maintaining relationships that no longer serve us whether that's a job, a friendship or a romantic relationship Delayed obedience is disobedience. What you don't correct, you give permission to Lean into dissonance - there is beauty there Trust your gut. If you won't listen to your own compass, it's difficult to trust yourself in a relationship Compromise can be a form of assimiliation. Be careful what you compromise on. Guilt is the body's way of asking for a time out Choir and arts give you community of people who look out for you Don't leave DEI efforts for someone else. Get involved. And do not expect people to advocate for themselves. It takes all of us. Social injustice occurs when boundaries are violated. If someone asks you to or to not do something, listen. Homelessness / houselessness doesn't look a certain way Arts has always and will continue to save humanity It is your responsibility to set aside time to be creative so that you have the freedom to create Contact Coty Website: https://www.cotyravenmorris.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cotyraven/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cotyravenmorris TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@cotyraven?lang=en Being Human Together: https://www.beinghumantogether.net/ Coty's Book - "When I Grow Up" - https://fflat-books.com/product/when-i-grow-up/?fbclid=IwAR3lP8BfOJZA9K0wX7l7HYNc6lCy4uMqpzpcGU-u2FW2GgUKvqHzx41RtIk Coty's Music - https://www.brileemusic.com/coty-raven-morris Contact Brenda Website: brendawinkle.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brendawinkle/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brenda.winkle111 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@brendawinkle111 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brenda-winkle-empowerment/ Email: brenda@brendawinkle.com Free Meditation https://www.brendawinkle.com/feelbetter Free Guide and Cheat Sheet to Feel Better Fast https://www.brendawinkle.com/feelbetterfast Oregon Coast Reiki I Retreat https://www.brendawinkle.com/retreat
The Black Spy Podcast A sit down with Nazir Afzal - The first Muslim CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) Chief Prosecutor in England & Wales This week Carlton King explores the life and times of Nazir Afzal, the renowned first Muslim Chief Prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in England & Wales' (North West Region). The nearest equivalent body to the CPS in the United States is the District Attorney's office. We also learn about Nazir's tough up-bring in inner city Birmingham in the 1970's, his distrust of the police and other English institutions of state in the era and the depth of feeling this created within the young Nazir. We are made to understand why he decided to become a lawyer, rather than the doctor or engineer his parents hoped he'd become. And we learn about Nazir's journey into prosecuting on behalf of the British state. We also, discuss the all encompassing racism Nazir was subjected to from his very early life onward, to his somewhat more comfortable rise to the top of his profession. Finally, the men discuss a plethora of current and systemic problems suffered by the contemporary British state. Carlton points out that the CPS very rarely takes responsibility for its decisions and cites the Stephen Lawrence case as a prime example of this, noting that after Stephen Lawrence's murder the Met police within ten days had arrested four suspects, however, the crown prosecution service told police that in their opinion, their was not enough evidence to gain a conviction at court therefore police would have to release them! The suspects would all remain free for several years thereafter. The Met police would suffer greatly for not having arrested Stephen's murderers and were taunted as incompetent and institutionally racist. However, the CPS who prevented the four suspects taken to trial, took none of the blame or derision for the several year hiatus in bringing the very same suspects to trial of whom three would be found guilty. However, solely the Met Police have taken the blame for not closing the case quickly, when those at fault were the CPS. Carlton challenges Nazir to explain this anomaly! Consequently, as you can see, this is obviously another must hear Black Spy Podcast episode. Wildfire Safety (0:00:00) Over the last few years, we have seen an alarming increase in the number of wildfires happening in the US. In 2019 alone, wildfires burned 4.7 million acres nationwide, affecting the lives of both our loved ones and wild animal populations. And this year is no different. People living on the West Coast especially are looking up at apocalyptic, orange skies caused by the fires and smoke raging through their states. So how can we be fully prepared in case one of these fires reaches us? Joining us this morning is Daniel Leavell, an associate professor and extension forester at Oregon State University, here with us to share his expertise on wildfire safety. International Disasters (0:20:09) If you didn't hear about it, last month a large amount of ammonium nitrate exploded in the city of Beirut, Lebanon, killing over a hundred people and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Now when things like this happen in our home country, there are easy things we can do to help—volunteer somewhere, sign a petition, or donate. But when a disaster happens across the world, action seems a little more difficult. We want to help—so what can we do? Here to give us her advice is Emily Brouwer, managing director for UNICEFUSA's Northwest Region. The Dunning-Kruger Effect (0:35:46) We've all seen it—the drawn-out and poisonous debates on various social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. This polarized interaction is comprised of 2 or more users who are each convinced of their own “correctness” and the superiority of their argument. Everyone thinks they're always right. The truth is, we're all wrong now and then. However, according to the Dunning-Kruger effect, the catch-22 is that we don't recognize when we're wrong. But why? And what's the solution? Here with us to discuss the Dunning-Kruger Effect and how we can combat it is Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan, Dr. David Dunning himself. 9/11 from the Perspective of a Child (1:09:27) As we sat and watched from afar, we couldn't help but feel great pain for those close to the tragedy—the victims, the first responders, and the family members of all involved. Well today, we feel honored to speak with one of those people—someone whose life has been molded by the events of 9/11. We are meeting with Matt Bocchi, a man who was nine years old when his father died in the World Trade Center. His story begins with heartbreak and despair. But it is also full of lessons about how to find happiness and hope. We're excited to hear from him. Weekend Review (1:30:02) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from new releases coming to streaming services to the New York Times Bestseller list.
