There is only one perfect Father, and that is God Himself, the Everlasting Father. But because God is our perfect Father figure, human fatherhood should seek to reflect the fatherhood of God as best as they can. Biblical, Spirit-filled fatherhood is an “endangered species” in our society. But one of the most vital ingredients to a strong family, church and society is the need for biblical, Spirit-filled fathers. Biblical, Spirit-filled fatherhood is regarded as archaic and irrelevant in “today's culture” (whatever that means!). Sadly, even within the church, biblical, Spirit-filled fatherhood has been replaced by extremes of legalistic authoritarianism or flat out, no involvement and absenteeism leaving wives and mothers to “fulfill” a role that God never intended them to fulfill. Today's message is a call for the fathers and grandfathers of Koinonia to step up and accept our God given roles of fatherhood, in spite of how we feel or what society says. Men, our families need us to be Spirit filled men of God. Listen to this griping story: In 2003, Hurricane Isabel slammed into the East Coast of the United States, leaving 16 dead and cutting power to six million homes. The edges of the hurricane passed through Washington, D.C., prompting the president and members of Congress to find safer quarters. That was not the case at Arlington National Cemetery, where guards stood vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns at the time, just as they had done every hour of every day since July 1, 1937. When the hurricane hit, the soldiers remained at their posts even though they were given permission to seek shelter. That's what a soldier does. He acknowledges the storm, but he doesn't give in to it. He stands firm. Biblical manhood and fatherhood is under attack by today's society and the liberal church.Like these soldiers, Christian men, young or old, are called to stand and do our duty while staring down the very storms of a God forsaken culture that is pressuring us to neglect abandon our biblical posts as heads of our families. When men abandon this pursuit of Christ like, Spirit filled headship or when this responsibility of leadership is usurped by their wives or simply taken away from them... CHAOS ENSUES in the home, in society and in the church. For the glory of God, I pray that Almighty God pour out His Spirit upon each and every father here today. SELAH

I was asked to watch the Memorial Day celebration in Washington, DC on saturday night. It was very moving and the stories of sacrifice and loss of loved ones for the sake of our Nation was sobering at the very least. I proceeded today on Memorial Day to watch another Memorial Day celebration of sacrifice at Arlington National Cemetery where the President and Vice President of the United States gave very moving speeches and recognized many families who had lost loved ones. In student ministry, these soldiers are mostly still in our wheelhouse of ministry between the ages of 18 to 25 years of age, which is still adolescence.   I felt God's move in me saying, "Get in touch with those you know whose life were almost lost serving our nation" and I was able to reach one of them. Clark Blake was a Recon Marine that served in Vietnam. This means he was the toughest of the tough! I asked Clark to tell his story and he graciously did thouroughly in this interview. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday in May, echoing the words and sentiments of the proclamation of General John A. Logan of the grand Army of the Republic in 1868 who stated:“Memorial Day is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion (the Civil War) and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet, church yard in the land.”So it is that the primary purpose of Memorial Day is to strew with flowers literally and figuratively the graves and memories of America's daring defenders. They the fallen died for freedom, liberty, for America, for us, for YOU AND ME. We were asked to remember those who died in the great American Civil War, but the day to remember now incorporates all who have given lives in defense of our country. Far too many wars, my fellow Americans, and far too many fallen defenders by the millions who believed in America, and in its fundamental principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all mankind. How grateful we should be.We are descendants or contemporaries of patriots, men and women who cherish freedom and were willing to fight and die to defend it if necessary. These warriors lived by the words of Patrick Henry who said:GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH.Our nation was formed in the fight for freedom for there was no life worthwhile without it. There came our great Constitution and our incredible BILL OF RIGHTS, the rights and freedom amendments which are the finest in the history of mankind. But no matter the origin, it seems as though in so many ways the passion for freedom may have been lost today as they once had it. We seem to take for granted what they died for. And the courage they the fallen had seems lost today in so many ways and the change in our country, produces in so many ways an America in decline, at least politically, philosophically and certainly passionately. Our ancestors fought for the Constitution, for the Bill of Rights and the freedoms those now 27 Amendments allow us. They were ready to die for them, but we the current people allow them to be watered down, interpreted away and often ignored without the fight or conviction to protect and defend them. Perhaps the freedoms of Patrick Henry are giving way to a slow but sure death. Perhaps we have failed to meet the challenge of Ben Franklin who told us that the Republic they created for us was a marvelous way of government IF we could keep it. I wonder if we can.So, in the midst of barbeques and baseball, it is so healthy to look back andremember. Remember a George Washington, a general, a leader, a President, awarrior, a patriot. Or a Paul Revere who rode the land warning that the enemy wascoming, sounding the alarm. It seems as though we need more Paul Reveres, warningus that enemies to our Constitution and way of life are coming, and in fact are HERE.We the people should be ever mindful of the threats and sound the alarm as he did,like those who energized our country once before, THE BOSTON TEA PARTYPATRIOTS and the revolution their courageous acts energized and inspired. They tooka stand against taxes and so must we. Ours continue to rise, and rise to the point ofconfiscation and nothing but nothing destroys freedom like taxes. President JohnAdams reminded us that the two killers of liberty are slavery and debt. The debt ofconfiscatory taxation strangles freedom and that is happening at an incredibly rapidpace today. Shame on us.It is hard for us to think back and remember the early days in America when slavery,slavery was a way of life in America to our great shame and embarrassment. We themoderns find that inconceivable, and the practice of slavery of any kind abhorrent, dowe not? Right-thinking men and women fought and fell to rid America of the scourgeof slavery, God bless them.And to rid the world of despots like Hitler, evil to the core, Mussolini and those who inwar would destroy the freedom and liberty of all. God bless them.There can hardly be a family anywhere in America which has not laid a son ordaughter on the altar of freedom. So many fought and fell, lives given willingly for usin war after war. And there were those who supported those who fought. We honorthem. Many of our warriors and defenders came home hurt and damaged in body ormind perhaps for a lifetime. On Memorial Day, we honor these veterans of wars, theseHEROES, these wounded warriors who gave us our freedom:WE OWE THEM!A debt we can never repay. Take time today to remember those who sacrificed Memorial Day is a U.S. holiday that's supposed to be about mourning the nation's fallen service members, but it's come to anchor the unofficial start of summer and a long weekend of travel and discounts on anything from mattresses to lawn mowers. Iraq War veteran Edmundo Eugenio Martinez Jr. said the day has lost so much meaning that many Americans "conflate and mix up Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, July Fourth." Social media posts pay tribute to "everyone" who has served, when Memorial Day is about those who died. For him, it's about honoring 17 U.S. service members he knew who lost their lives. "I was either there when they died or they were soldiers of mine, buddies of mine," said Martinez, 48, an Army veteran who lives in Katy, Texas, west of Houston. "Some of them lost the battle after the war." Steve Merando, who has marched in Cold Spring's Memorial Day parade since he was 10 years old, agreed. "People forget that Memorial Day is supposed to be a memorial to those who were killed in action while serving their country," said Merando, who served with the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1969 to 1973, including in Vietnam and Thailand. He played Little League baseball with Keith Livermore, one of three Philipstown residents killed in the Vietnam War. In Memoriam: Philipstown and Beacon Here is a look at the holiday and how it has evolved: When is Memorial Day? It falls on the last Monday of May, which this year is May 26. In Cold Spring, a parade will begin at 9 a.m. at Stone and Main streets and progress to Cold Spring Cemetery in Nelsonville for a ceremony. Hot dogs and refreshments will follow at the American Legion. Rain or shine. In Beacon, a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at 413 Main St. It will include the dedication of a plaque to mark the 100th anniversary of the Veterans Memorial Building, which was completed in 1925. Why is Memorial Day celebrated? It's a day of reflection and remembrance of those who died while serving in the U.S. military. The holiday is observed in part by the National Moment of Remembrance, which encourages all Americans to pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence. What are the origins of Memorial Day? The holiday's origins can be traced to the American Civil War, which killed more than 600,000 service members - both Union and Confederate - between 1861 and 1865. The first national observance of what was then called Decoration Day occurred on May 30, 1868, after an organization of Union veterans called for decorating war graves with flowers, which were in bloom. The practice was already widespread. Waterloo, New York, in Seneca County, began a formal observance on May 5, 1866, and was later proclaimed to be the holiday's birthplace. Yet Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, traced its first observance to October 1864. And women in some Confederate states were decorating graves before the war's end. David Blight, a Yale history professor, points to May 1, 1865, when as many as 10,000 people, many of them Black, held a parade, heard speeches and dedicated the graves of Union dead in Charleston, South Carolina. A total of 267 Union troops had died at a Confederate prison and were buried in a mass grave. After the war, members of Black churches buried them in individual graves. "What happened in Charleston does have the right to claim to be first, if that matters," Blight told the Associated Press in 2011. When did Memorial Day become a source of contention? As early as 1869, The New York Times wrote that the holiday could become "sacrilegious" and no longer "sacred" if it focused more on pomp, dinners and oratory. In an 1871 Decoration Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery, abolitionist Frederick Douglass said he feared Americans were forgetting the Civil War's impetus: enslavement. "We must never forget that the loyal soldiers who rest beneath this sod flung themselves between the nation and the nation's destroyers," Douglass said. His concern...

The narratives of valor from the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-female Women's Army Corps unit to serve overseas during World War II—have been stripped from view. Even the stories of pioneering women such as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and World War II combat photographer Marguerite Higgins have been erased.​
