Jetpack Workflow is a company that helps accounting firm owners track down all the recurring debts and due dates to avoid losses. Dave Cristello, The CEO and founder of Jetpack Workflow realized that many accounting firms have numerous customers. However, they lacked an efficient checklist management system. The ideal Jetpack Workflow customer is any accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and tax firm in different parts of the world. What You Will Learn How Dave launched Jetpack Workflow How Dave identified the pain points that accounting firms face Why did Dave start interviewing the accounting departments of various companies? How Jetpack Workflow bagged its first customer How Dave invested in website development How Dave navigated the industry with zero software experience Why accounting firms should upgrade from using spreadsheets Which platforms did Dave go searching for a technical co-founder? Why entrepreneurs should know how to pitch their ideas Find out why Dave opted to raise money The impact of well-written words on your website How businesses can benefit from summarizing podcasts into a blog post or even a book In this Episode Many accounting firms have a proper project management system. However, if they cannot keep track of deadlines, customer data, and due dates the system becomes irrelevant. Jetpack workflow helps accounting firms standardize their operations. Dave gives Geordie a comprehensive breakdown of the pain points that Jetpack Workflow strives to solve. Jetpack strives to eliminate pain points that accounting firms face to ensure they can beat deadlines. While Dave did not have a job before starting Jetpack, he had a strong feeling that he wanted to build something. Dave went ahead and approached different companies. He says that he began interviewing the accounting departments of these firms through trial and error. Dave wanted to establish the most time consuming, tedious, and painful problem the departments were facing daily or even weekly. From the responses he received, Dave was able to get reflection points. Listen in as he narrates the challenges he faced when developing a website. He also tells Geordie about the expenses they incurred. During the development process, Dave was working as a marketer and channeling all his earnings to the developers. The first year Jetpack managed 600 MRR, but Dave says their product was horrible. What kept them going is the fact that the earliest adopters appreciated the product because it solved their pain points. When Jetpack workflow was at 5,000 MRR, Dave was experiencing a crazy relationship with his developer. He also felt that his product was terrible, even though some people were still using and appreciating it. Many competitors were beginning to get into the market as well. To scale his company and stay ahead of competitors, Jetpack’s early investors advised Dave to bring onboard a technical co-founder. Listen in to find out how challenging finding a co-founder was. At some point, Dave’s advisors told him to hire somebody to drive the company, failure to which it would tumble down. Dave narrates to Geordie how he managed to raise money to hire a professional in 2016 who is still with the company to date. During one of the meet-ups with other entrepreneurs, Dave noticed that nearly everybody was talking about the importance of Facebook ads. He decided to invest some money in Facebook ads just to see the outcome. Listen as Dave narrates his journey with Facebook ads and how he pumped in more money on the project. In his opinion, Dave says companies that identify a reliable channel have a high chance of accelerating growth. However, he is quick to mention that there are downsides that come with accelerated growth. Between Jetpack’s 5,000 to 30,000 MRR, Dave’s product was doing well. They were deleting some features and doing everything they could to clean their website. The company was enjoying some visibility, Dave managed to post content consistently, and they even launched a podcast. The team was also writing blog posts, sharing content, doing webinars, and running ads to market the company. Geordie sought to find out what worked for Dave out of all the strategies he was using. However, he (Dave) was unable to pinpoint a single strategy that worked comprehensively. Instead, he says the company posted results from using a combination of all the strategies. Dave highlights the fact that he and his team were generating lots of content in a bid to develop a database. He is happy that this strategy worked to attract organic traffic to the website. His breaking point was when he discovered Facebook ads. Listen as Dave speaks about his breaking point at depth. Dave’s mantra is, “believe in yourself, and you will be able to achieve anything you want.” Resources Dave Cristello Linkedin Dave Cristello Twitter Jetpack Workflow
This week’s episode of Good Girls Get Rich is brought to you by Uplevel Media CEO and LinkedIn expert, Karen Yankovich. In this episode, Karen shares how to use your birthday as a way to build meaningful relationships. Relationship-based marketing is more valuable than sales-based marketing, and your birthday provides you a valuable opportunity to grow relationships. #GoodGirlsGetRich We want to hear your thoughts on this episode! Leave us a message on Speakpipe or email us at info@karenyankovich.com. About the Episode: Many people on LinkedIn don’t understand why they should add their birthday to their profile. After all, LinkedIn is for business, right? But don’t forget, you should be focusing on relationship-based marketing, not sales-based. And birthdays are the perfect opportunities to build relationships. LinkedIn and Your Birthday If you include your birthday on your LinkedIn profile, LinkedIn will notify your connections when it’s your birthday. And that’s cool! It’s nice to receive birthday wishes. But the real value is in the opportunities to build meaningful relationships. The Fortune is in the Follow-Up How do you build meaningful relationships on your birthday? The fortune in the follow-up. Because LinkedIn birthday messages are all private, start a personal conversation with the people who wished you a happy birthday. Don’t just say, “Thanks,” or send a thumbs up and end the conversation. Have a meaningful conversation like, “Hey, remember when we…” or “I heard you’ve been doing…” or even “It’s been a while since we’ve met up.” As they reply back, don’t let the conversation end. Keep genuinely communicating until you’re able to get on the phone with them. Be Intentional Keep in mind, however, that you don’t want to have these intentional conversations with just anybody. Take your time to look over their profiles. Are they someone you’d want to do business with? Would you be able to mutually help each other? If so, go for it! If not, just be grateful and thank them for their birthday wishes. You don’t want to burn yourself out building relationships that won’t go anywhere. Keep this in mind, and as your next birthday comes around, try using this birthday technique. You’ll be amazed at the business that’ll roll in. Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: Many of the companies I have worked with this year want to make their product development and management capability more agile. They sometimes express their current process is too linear, rigid, and heavy as well as not providing the shorter time-to-market they want. Most often they are using something that is of a stage-gate nature, but being more agile doesn’t mean throwing away a stage-gate framework. However, it does mean adopting agile philosophy and processes. This is what our guest, Mike Cohn has been doing for more than 20 years — building high-performing software development teams and organizations through the use of agile and Scrum. He’s worked with startups and some of the largest organizations in the world and has valuable experience to share with us.
The message to “be the best you can be” for young girls can be a huge smack in the face as we grow older - because even though many strides have happened over the years, this message has limitations based on gender. In today’s episode I unpack the topic of ambition for women and the cultural stigma we need to overcome in order to be supported and respected for our pursuits of purpose. Your episode worksheet: Femmefluence.com/ep7 Key Points from this Episode Many women (me included) were taught at a young age that it is commendable to be ambitious and to be the best you can be. I got that message growing up. I also got the message to expect to have to have a tidy household, to make sure my husband felt manly and to be more feminine, and to not trust anyone outside of my family. Talk about confusing! Ambitious men are supported, encouraged, and recognized for their achievements. Ambitious women are often viewed negatively; their right to reach advanced status is sometimes denied, and their motives are often questioned. Ambitious women are sometimes seen as nasty, self-serving, and unlikeable. I’m certainly not immune or not guilty of this. I became a feminist who wanted to prove women wrong - weird right? What I REALLY wanted is to find a posse of women who had the ambition to change the world together. I recently went to a retreat for women where I thought I belonged. It was amazing. I gave this particular retreat a glowing review before I left. And after the fact I found out that it was not as it appeared. That person expected because they had done that at their event for me to do the same. Whenever you do something with the expectation of taking, instead of the expectation of giving, it puts a sour taste in the other person's mouth. And we tend to do that with women. High-profile successful women have a complicated relationship with ambition. Savannah Guthrie’s comment at a Real Simple/TIME Women & Success event in 2015 that she “hates the word ambition and thinks it’s impolite” is indicative of the negative nuances we as women associate with power and ambition. (I wonder how she felt about Matt Lauer as her showmate for all those years #hmm) Where does our discomfort with ambition come from? Society tends to be overly critical of powerful and ambitious women. In one New York Times Op-ed, the author notes that although women have made some progress in reaching powerful positions in the political and corporate world, “Progress is not inevitable, though, nor is it fixed. The country has a complicated relationship with powerful women: They have to keep proving themselves over and over again, being twice as good, and dragging one woman through the process doesn’t make it easier for those who follow.” Another article in Fortune speaks to how former presidential candidates Carly Fiorina and Hillary Clinton were measured against the conventional idea of female behavior with Clinton labeled as “overbearing and shrill.”

Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: Many companies have faced disruption. Of course, Uber and Airbnb are the poster children of disruption, but there are many more. Kodak was displaced by the digital camera. Blockbuster’s physical doors could not stay open in the face of Netflix’s virtual service. Borders Books failed in the wake of Amazon. Some companies have also managed to continue in the face of industry disruption, such as Best Buy and Barnes & Noble. What companies, both big and small, established and startup, can do to avoid disruption is the topic of this discussion. Our guest is Dr. Thales Teixeira, Associate Professor at Harvard Business School and research of digital disruption. He has a new book examining disruption titled Unlocking the Customer Value Chain. We discuss how value is now being created for customers.

The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: Many product managers and product marketers are using surveys incorrectly. We like surveys because they are relatively quick and inexpensive compared to other tools, such as customer interviews. While they can help us confirm what we think are the needs of customers and provide customer experience information, they are not something most customers look forward to participating in. My guest has a different experience. He creates surveys that not only have insanely high response rates but that actually create more loyal customers. Imagine that–surveys as a tool to make loyal customers. He is Matt Champagne, researcher, university professor, author, serial entrepreneur, and most importantly a survey and feedback expert. He has implemented systems in more than 600 organizations to drastically improve customer retention, learning, and performance. We discuss his 9 Principles of Customer Feedback. Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: Many medium to large organizations are adopting agile practices, such as the use of Scrum. Some are having more success with the adoption than others. Most of these organizations are also using some form of stage-gate for the development of new products. When done right, stage-gate reduces risk, reduces time to market, and increases the return on innovation investment. For the more than 80 percent of U.S. companies using stage-gate, the idea of replacing it with agile is often not warmly embraced. Instead, a hybrid agile stage-gate process is a more reasonable place to start. My guest, Colin Palombo, has been helping organizations using stage-gate to move to a hybrid agile stage-gate process and enjoying many benefits for doing so while keeping the framework they are familiar with. It’s a win-win. Colin is a managing partner and co-founder of two innovation consulting firms — Innovation Framework Technologies and Bizmotion. I met Colin at the annual PDMA conference and enjoyed his insights for making stage-gate more agile. I hope you do as well.
