3 Books is a completely insane and totally epic 15-year-long quest to uncover the 1000 most formative books in the world. Each of the 333 chapters discusses the 3 most formative books of inspiring people such as Judy Blume, David Sedaris, Dr. Jen Gunter, Malcolm Gladwell, or the world's greatest Uber driver. 3 Books is hosted by Neil Pasricha, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Awesome series, The Happiness Equation, and Two-Minute Mornings. 3 Books is recorded in a special "two-ear" format so you are in the middle of the conversation and the show is released on the lunar calendar with every chapter dropping on the exact minute of every single new moon and every single full moon up to September 1, 2031. 3 Books is an Apple "Best Of" award-winning podcast and 100% ad-free, sponsor-free, and commercial-free. For more info check out: www.3books.co Dr. Andrea Sereda graduated from Schulich Medicine in 2007. She provides care through the London Intercommunity Health Centre in London, Ontario. Dr. Sereda is a family physician who practices street outreach medicine, caring for people living in homelessness, women working in the survival sex trade and people who inject drugs. Dr. Sereda is an avid harm reductionist who has pioneered Canada’s first oral take-home Safe Supply program, which provides prescription opioids to people at risk of death from the fentanyl contaminated street drug supply. Safe Supply challenges the paradigms of how the healthcare system interacts with people who use drugs and is saving lives by dismantling the harms of drug prohibition. Dr. Sereda also provides primary care for “Street Level Women at Risk” (SLWAR), a Housing First model of care that strives to rapidly house women while concurrently addressing a woman’s physical health, mental health and substance use problems. SLWAR is a program unique within Canada, bringing together a team of women supporting women. SLWAR is seeing profound successes in their work of housing and caring for chronically homeless women. In 2018, Dr. Andrea Sereda was recognized as one of Canada’s top 40 under 40 Chapter Description: Today we sit down with Dr. Andrea Sereda at the Sherbourne Health Centre on the east side of downtown Toronto, an area of the city sometimes known for its challenges with drug abuse. Who is Dr. Andrea Sereda? Dr. Andrea Sereda is a family physician who practices street outreach medicine. She provides care through the London InterCommunity Health Centre in London, Ontario and works with the emergency safer supply substitution program to prescribes hydromorphone, an opioid used by injection drug users to reduce the risk of contaminated street drugs. Wait! What? Yes, on the face of it, Dr. Andrea Sereda ‘gives drugs to drug users but there is a lot more to the story. We are going right to the front lines of the opioid epidemic which, even before the end of this conversation, will take 10 lives in North America alone. (To illustrate the issue more deeply, 8,048 Americans died of opioid related drug overdoses in 1999. What about now? Well, the number was 47,600 in 2017, which is the most recently available data.) It will take ingenuity, creativity, and passion to address this issue. As you’ll hear, Dr. Andrea Sereda offers all three in spades. Her views are often provocative, sometimes controversial, and she will argue that drugs should be decriminalized and why we should indeed give drugs to drug users. What about the challenges to these ideas? The critics? The controversies? We get into that, too. And we are fortunate enough to use Andrea’s three most formative books as a launchpad into this conversation. I am so grateful to Dr. Andrea Sereda for sharing so much of her life, her journey, and her practice with all of us. I find her and her work incredibly challenging, intriguing, and inspiring. I hope you do, too. Let’s go! What You'll Learn: Why should drugs be given to drug users? Should drugs be decriminalized? Why or why not? What is actually more harmful -- the drugs themselves or the quality of drugs? How can we reduce stigma on people in our communities living with mental illness, drug addiction and homelessness? Can drugs be considered a ‘basic need’? You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/49 Leave us a voicemail. Chapter Description: Have you ever developed a relationship with your local corner shop owner? Maybe you pop into a convenience store every day to grab a drink or you walk into the same coffee shop every afternoon. Leslie and I have developed a relationship with Soyoung Kim, a beautiful, kind, Korean woman who has run the corner store by our house for years. My wife Leslie has long trained me to buy her fresh flowers every week. And I always buy them from Soyoung’s shop. Soyoung reads 50 books per year and credits them to helping her form her identity and better understand English when she first emigrated to Canada. I asked Soyoung to come on 3 Books to share her three most formative books and we grabbed two milk crates and sat down in the garden center at the side of her store. I hope you enjoy this talk with Soyoung Kim as much as I did. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why do older siblings often feel pressure to take care of the family? How can we learn to take care of ourselves when we’re responsible for taking care of others? Who should take care of us when we grow older? How can we learn to empty our minds on a daily basis? Ryan was the former Director of Marketing for American Apparel, and then went on to found his own creative agency, Brass Check, which has advised clients like Google, Neil Strauss, Tony Robbins and Tim Ferriss. Ryan lives outside Austin, Texas where he writes and works in between raising cattle, donkeys and goats. Chapter Description: Back in 2013 I stumbled on an article online called “How To Read More — A Lot More” by some writer guy on the Internet named Ryan Holiday. I started reading the piece and got sucked into it. He had a point! A great point. Many great points, actually. And he was super young. A young man telling the world to read more books? In an era where most guys read none… or, you know, like three books a year? I found Ryan Holiday to be a complete breath of fresh air. So I immediately began to copy everything he did. He launched a monthly book club. I launched a monthly book club! (With his blessings, of course.) He was talking about reading fifty then a hundred books a year. I started to read five books then ten books then fifty books a year. I started cancelling magazine and newspaper subscriptions and began to consciously put my phone away. I installed a bookshelf at my front door and cancelled cable. And, of course, I started this podcast! In a way 3 Books would not exist without Ryan Holiday. I can trace my rediscovered passion for reading all the way back to this writer guy from the Internet. But he’s not just a writer guy on the Internet anymore. Ryan Holiday has sold over 2,000,000 books (!) and essentially leads the repopularization of stoic philosophy on a mass scale. Some of his books include The Obstacle Is The Way, Ego Is The Enemy, and his brand new book, Stillness Is The Key. Ryan also runs DailyStoic.com, the consulting company Brass Check, and his newest project Daily Dad. He’s become a friend and I have definitely caught his bug. So in Chapter 38 of 3 Books I ask Ryan to share his four most formative books. (You’ll hear why on the show.) He tells us how to decide who to trust, how he got dramatically fired from his first job, and why we shouldn’t turn parenting into a job. I hope you enjoy Chapter 38 with Ryan Holiday. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why should you spoil the endings of books and movies? How do we win the war for attention? Why does the path you take toward a goal matter more than achieving the goal itself? His latest book, Talking to Strangers, was published on September 10, 2019. He has been a staff writer for the New Yorker since 1996. Foreign Policy has three times named him one of their Top Global Thinkers, and he has been named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People. He is a trustee of the Surgo Foundation and currently serves on the board of the RAND Corporation. Chapter Description: Who we are is a function of where we are. Do you agree with that? Who you are depends on where you are. We’re different people in different places, right? You’re different in the board room than you are on vacation. You’re different with your parents than you are with your kids. And, as for me, I’m different hanging with with Malcolm Gladwell in the West Village than I am sitting in my basement as I type up this blog post. And that theme is one that we get to open up in Chapter 37 of 3 Books with Malcolm Gladwell. Guys, I was so nervous for this podcast. I mean, super nervous. I couldn’t sleep for a few nights before. I read his three most formative books. I listened to his podcast Revisionist History. I got an advance copy of his brand new book Talking To Strangers. I mean, I was so nervous that I showed up for the podcast an hour early. (Who does that?) So Malcolm invites me into his place and we get settled around a table surrounded by books. Top to bottom! Floor to ceiling! And, no big deal, all hardcovers. I’m intimated but at the very end of the podcast, right after I clicked stop on the recorder … he said three words that completely chilled me out. (I’ll tell you what they were after the show.) I found him extremely down to Earth with a beautiful calming energy. We talk about raising great nerds in a world forcing us into the mean, how to find tribes where we truly fit in, who he thinks is the best non-fiction author alive, why thrillers are incredibly instructive, what his biggest advice is for aspiring authors, and, of course, his three most formative books. I hope you enjoy Chapter 37 with Malcolm Gladwell. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why should we reread books more often? Are we all simply products of our environments? What book has Malcolm read every five years since the age of 15? Which book does Malcolm call “appallingly marketed”? How do we preserve our privacy in an endlessly connected world? His blog, markmanson.net, attracts more than two million readers per month. Mark just released a brand new book titled Everything is F*cked: A Story About Hope, and will be publishing another book, Will Smith's memoir, later this year. Chapter Description: Have you by chance heard of a book called The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck? I’m guessing you have since it’s sold, oh, no big deal, over six million copies over the past three years in the US alone. Is there a bigger book in the world right now? No. There is not. And there hasn’t been a non-fiction book this big and this disruptive in a long, long time… So: Is Mark Manson a one-hit wonder? A one-trick pony? Was the success of his book a total random fluke? His fifteen minutes of fame? I’m gonna say it straight up. No. Absolutely not. Mark’s first book, and it’s meteoric success, is the ultimate product of an unbelievably large mind which has mastered the art of taking the biggest, densest books on the planet and then simmering, simmering, and simmering them down into beautifully simple, profanity-laced models and stories that hit you like a ton of bricks. The world is so loud! So busy. So full. Everything is screaming at us to buy this, buy that, do this, do that. And you know what we need in this wild crazy world? We need guides. We need clear voices. We need people to give us simple and practical advice that we can follow and put into place… Mark Manson is one of those guides for me and millions of others. So in his cramped hotel room at The Drake Hotel in Toronto, on the eve of his release of his second book Everything is Fucked: A Book About Hope (which is mind-expandingly beautiful), Mark and I go deep, really deep, on how to build trust in an era of clutter, why he swears so much in his writing, why he poo-poos self-help gurus, what is the root problem with the “advertising model”, why Mark played video games for months straight after the success of his first book, and what his writing routines and principles are… Welcome to Chapter 28 with Mark Manson. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why is it important to be selfish when it comes to your writing? Why is swearing an important form of self expression? What is the root problem with the “advertising model”? How do we make the most of our time in our short, tiny lives? How are science and spirituality interrelated? How does knowledge from ancient philosophers relate to modern psychology? How do we choose the path that’s most aligned with our morals instead of most profitable? Why is there no such thing as atheism? Why do we need to be more comfortable with quitting? According to Fast Company, Tim has “captured a level of reader engagement that even the new-media giants would be envious of.” Tim’s series of posts after interviewing Elon Musk has been called by Vox “the meatiest, most fascinating, most satisfying posts I’ve read in ages.” Tim’s TED Talk, Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator, has received more than 30 million views. Chapter Description: Pop quiz! Who’s the first person who comes to mind when you think of the word philosopher? Aristotle, Plato, Socrates … Karl Marx? If you asked me today, the first person that comes to my mind is Tim Urban. Because a philosopher is someone engaged with the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. Wrestling with the big questions! And sure, lots of folks are doing that. But I can’t think of anyone doing it better right now than Tim Urban. Tim Urban is co-founder and writer of the popular blog Wait Buy Why, which has over 1.5 million readers per month and scores of big-name fans including Elon Musk. Why? Because Tim has a beautifully simplistic way of distilling big, complex topics like artificial intelligence, picking a life partner, and, say, The Fermi Paradox, into simple language. He’s an incredible teacher, an incredible philosopher. His TED Talk on procrastination is a great example of this, which has over 30 million views. Tim’s intellectual curiosity is huge. Despite being a Harvard grad, Tim’s going against the grain of typical Harvard grads and spending his days writing long blog posts using simple words to explain big things. And we’re lucky enough to get a glimpse into how Tim’s brain works in Chapter 22. We discuss breaking convention, retaining curiosity, Stitches vs Band-aids, why you should let your children wear shorts in the winter, the difference between cooks and chefs, and much, much more.... Join us over avocado toast in the corner of Ludlow Coffee Supply in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why should you let your kids wear shorts in the winter? Why is it important to separate art from the artist? How can conservatism and progressivism work together? How can we learn to break free from normalcy and follow our own paths? How can we tell if old wisdom is still useful or if it no longer applies? What’s the difference between reasoning with first principle versus reasoning by analogy? How can we learn to appreciate children’s curiosity and tendency to ask ‘why’? If someone is remorseful of something, does that mean they deserve forgiveness?
