Dave Jackson is a podcast consultant who helps people plan, launch, grow, and monetize their podcasts. He began podcasting in 2005 and launched the School of Podcasting, which has more than 2.7 million downloads. He's the author of the book Profit From Your Podcast and is a featured speaker at events. In 2016, Dave joined Libsyn, which is one of the largest podcast hosting companies.    In today's episode, we're going to discuss Dave's journey to podcasting and three of his key strategies to hosting a successful podcast.   Dave's Journey to Podcasting    Dave began his journey as a teacher and taught in the corporate world for about 20 years. “The great thing about being a teacher is you get to help people all the time,” Dave said.    While he loved teaching, he wanted to find a new way to help people beyond the corporate world. A friend told him about podcasting, so he googled it to find one and a half pages of results. Podcasts weren't big at the time, but as he continued to do his research, he realized the shift towards podcasts was going to be a tectonic shift in the future.    Dave went back to school to get his degree and started a podcast, while also working other side jobs to help support himself until he could build a big-enough audience to make money with his podcast. What really got him hooked on the idea was his first voicemail from an audience member. Someone from Germany reached out to him to let him know how inspired he was from his podcast. That's when Dave realized he could teach through podcasts and help people from around the world.    “I got to help people, and I [thought it was] the best thing ever,” Dave said. “That's when I decided I was going to launch the School of Podcasting. I just knew if I waited long enough, it would catch up.”   Since then, podcasting has grown exponentially with more than two million active podcasts and more than 48 million episodes as of April 2021 (Source: Podcast Insights).    In 2016, Dave joined Libsyn where he helps customers with questions about building their own podcast. He'd been a customer for Libsyn for 10 years when he gave them a call. He told them he had bad news and good news. He was out of a job, but it meant he was available to work for them. He also told them about his podcast, School of Podcasting.   His podcast wasn't just a way for him to make a profit or to help his listeners. It also helped him get a job. He has been hired three times because of his podcast. His podcast gave him an opportunity to show people he knew what he was talking about. “Our podcast isn't, in many cases, our business, it's our business card. It's what allows people to get to know you without making a giant commercial,” Dave said.    While Dave works at Libsyn, he continues to host his own podcast at the same time. With years of experience in the podcasting world, he has learned many lessons and key strategies we should implement in our own podcast. Here are three of them.    Focus on a Specific Niche   The biggest mistake Dave sees podcasters make is trying to be everything for everyone. People often want to start a podcast with a very vague goal in mind. For example, someone may start a podcast with the idea to interview people with interesting stories. But what are those interesting stories? What is going to make someone want to listen to us over others?    If we don't bring in an audience, we don't have a podcast. Generic and wide-ranging goals don't work 99% of the time. If we want to host a successful podcast, we need to focus on a specific niche audience.    Dave said that people often come to him with a goal to get sponsored, but sponsorships only happen if we have a large audience and can get massive downloads. And we only get massive downloads, if we are speaking to a specific group. We want to appeal to the needs and wants of a target audience. If we aim to meet the needs of everyone, we will end up meeting the needs of no one.    Even if we host a great podcast with a specific audience in mind, it can still be really difficult to get enough downloads to actually make money off a sponsorship. Instead, Dave recommends going even further and directing our podcast to an ever-smaller audience. “You don't have to have a ton of listeners if you have a hyper-niche show,” Dave said.    If we have a very direct, niche audience, we can get sponsored by other companies who have a similar audience to us. They will choose to sponsor us over others because we have such a specific audience that their product or service will resonate with.    For example, Dave had a client who ran a podcast called Special Mouse, a guide to the Disney Parks for guests with health issues and special needs. She didn't even have a thousand downloads in an episode, and yet she got a sponsor. Why? Because there was somebody in Florida that specialized in transporting people with special needs. The sponsor knew Special Mouse would reach their audience because it was such a hyper-niche.    Get Personal   In our podcasts, we should get personal.    Dave explained that one of the biggest business tectonic shifts that have happened over the last decade is the shift towards podcasts. Podcasts have become easier and easier to create. Technology exists that allows anyone to create a podcast. This is both good and bad. While podcasting has gotten easier, it also means the number of podcasts out there has increased. We can find a podcast on just about anything so why is someone going to choose to listen to our podcast over the millions of others out there?   “Why are you doing this? How are you going to be different [from] the other people you know?” Dave asked. “You have to have [something] that's going to set you apart, that is going to make a difference. You have to share a little bit about yourself if you really want people to connect with you.”   This doesn't mean we have to reveal our darkest secrets or tell our audience everything that goes on in our days. It means we have to show our personality. We have to show what makes us unique. Sometimes this means sharing our hobbies or a funny story that happened during our day, but it has to be something that relates to the topic of our episodes.    “If you can share stories about your life that help accentuates whatever point you're trying to make, you do two things: you make your point, and you allow your audience to get to know you. You start to build that relationship,” Dave said.    Talk to One Person   We should talk to one person when we talk on a podcast. This means referencing our listeners as “you” instead of referencing a group of people as if we are speaking at a live event.    Most people don't listen to podcasts with others. It's often an independent activity. They don't sit down with a group of friends on a couch to listen to an audio-only file while staring at the wall. They listen to podcasts while they're driving, cleaning, or they slip in headphones and listen to a podcast while they are at the gym.    64% of podcast listeners listen to podcasts while on the road (Source: Semrush Blog) and 76% of Americans drive to work alone every day (Source: Brookings.edu). 59% of people listen to podcasts while doing housework or chores, and 87% of podcast listeners said podcasts are enjoyable because they can listen to them while doing other things (Source: Semrush Blog). This means, when someone is listening to our podcasts, they are often alone. Our podcast episodes can feel a lot more personal because of this as it will feel like we are talking directly to the listener.    “When you do a solo show, number one, do not follow the advice of a YouTuber and start off with ‘Hey guys,'” Dave said. Instead, we should talk to the listener as if it is a one-on-one conversation with them. At the end of the podcast, we can thank them for listening, not “thanks, everyone.”   “I have people tell me all the time, ‘I always kind of feel like you're talking to me' and I would say, ‘It's because I am,'” Dave said. Podcasts are a great way to connect with our listeners since it is such an independent activity. We can take advantage of this personal “conversation” and make sure we talk to them specifically, not a general group of people.    Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Dave for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   Our podcast isn't just our business, it can also be our business card. If we want to host a successful podcast, we need to focus on a specific niche audience. We don't have to have thousands of listeners to be successful if we can really narrow down our target audience and serve them well. In our podcasts, we should get personal. There are millions of podcasts out there so we need to find what makes us unique and share it so our listeners will choose us. We can share stories about our life to help get our point across and allow our audience to get to know us and connect with us. We should talk to one person when we talk on a podcast. This means referencing our listeners as “you” instead of referencing a group of people.   Connect with Dave   If you want to learn more about or connect with Dave, you can: Find him on LinkedIn Listen to his podcasts School of Podcasting or Profit from Your Podcast    Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer?   Please follow these channels to receive free digital monetization content:   Get a free Passion Marketing ebook and learn how to be a top priority of your ideal customers. 312. We Maybe “A Million Miles Away” but Fighting for Frequency Brings Us Together with Their Music

Music is their weapon, will you join the fight? We've got three gentlemen to visit today in New Orleans. That's three out of the five members – the guitarist, the keyboardist, and the bassist of the band. We're going to talk about guitars, songs, gigs, New Orleans, touring, and anything else that we can think of with Fighting for Frequency! Fighting for Frequency's origin is a tale of amazing timing, one about the universe conspiring to bring musicians together in a serendipitous way. Chris and Dave had been long-time friends and had played music together in the past. Chris had given up on music years before, but when he moved into Dave's neighborhood around 2016, Chris and Dave realized they had the itch to write music again. At nearly the same time, Adam who is Dave's childhood friend moved into the neighborhood literally in the house behind Dave's. Knowing Adam was an excellent musician and songwriter that had played in several melodic metal bands, Dave invited Adam over for a listening party that engendered mutual respect for each other's songwriting skills, leading to ideas and aspirations being shared. A gate was built in the fence to transport gear from Adam's to Dave's. Adam also brought in a close friend as a drummer, and Fighting for Frequency was formed, with Adam utilizing his production skills to mold F4F into a more anthem-style arena rock sound partnered with high-energy shows. Within a couple of performances, the band grabbed the attention of a dedicated group of local rock fans, F4F's freaks! Soon after, Randon moved to New Orleans from Shreveport. The first live music show in New Orleans that he attended happened to be a Fighting for Frequency show. He showed up looking to network with other musicians. Getting friends with F4F and with his background in metal, Randon proved he was a phenomenal guitarist and brought a killer new approach to the band's sound. He was asked to fill in on guitar for a show while Dave was out of town. While Dave was away, he sends F4F videos of him playing their songs on piano for social media content, prompting the idea of Dave playing keys since he has played piano most of his life. With Dave expressing interest in playing keys and Randon having great chemistry with the band, it was the catalyst for the further growth of F4F. Due to the demands of F4F's touring schedule, the previous drummer moved on, but during the recording of the second F4F album, the guys brought in-studio drummer Brody. An absolute monster drummer, they asked him to join the fight, and he has infused hard-hitting new life into the rhythm section of F4F. Forged in the fires of rock and brought together by a series of fortuitous events, the formidable five members of Fighting for Frequency are determined to share their passion for rock with their fans, bringing rock back to its former glory. Music is their weapon. Join the fight! Quotes: 03:48 "... we are sort of fighting through the media clutter. There's a lot of artists out there, and there's also just a lot of peanut butter, it's hard to get heard in the 21st century. So, we're fighting for that space, that frequency within music and just within the industry in itself. We felt that it was appropriate, both on a symbolic level and also on the literal level of as musicians, we are fighting for that space." -Chris 29:19 "We try to bring that vibe, but we're having a good time on stage. If we're having a good time, I think the fans will too. It's sort of infectious to see people playing music and doing something they're passionate about." -Chris 30:24 "I think people generally associate rock with anger, but that's not really us." – Randon 34:22 "I think specifically during the pandemic, we spent a lot of time focused on social media and trying to expand our social media presence as well, just because it was the easiest way to get the word out and get the frequency out during that time." -Dave 53:09 "Don't get frustrated, keep on plugging along and sometimes trust the process. You might be impressed where the journey takes you." -Chris 55:04 "You just got to get out there and you got to pursue it. You know, you can't sit in your room and just play riffs and hope that being talented will be enough to get you somewhere, you got to put yourself out there, you got to get uncomfortable, and you got to meet people." -Randon Timestamps: 01:30     Introducing Fight for Frequency 02:19     What is the story behind the band's name: Fighting for Frequency 05:06     How does the writing process start for Fighting for Frequency 09:42     How was the transition phase of Dave when he changed from guitar to keys 12:39     Listen to “A Million Miles Away” by Fighting for Frequency 17:54     How did “A Million Miles Away” came together? 19:28     Fighting for Frequency shares how they work their way during the pandemic? 24:51     Talking about New Orleans – where they are, and the support they are getting 27:34     Fighting for Frequency shares the wide spectrum of their fanbase 30:55     Where are their gigs happening? 33:16     How do F4F communicate with their fans, and how do they keep them up to date? 35:38     Listen to “Fast Forward” by Fighting for Frequency 42:43     The gears and setup that Fighting for Frequency is using. 46:08     What are Fighting for Frequency's aspiring for this 2021. 51:30     Any food for thoughts, advice, or anything that they would like to say to younger singer-songwriters and bands who are just starting to develop their craft? 56:18     Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor   Spotify Playlist: Want something to listen to? Join Scott and Mark with their guests Dave Sarra as they chat about comedy club stories, conspiracy theories, and the age of shitty sequels. Dave Sarra is a stand-up comedian, podcast host, Twitch streamer, and Youtuber known for the most random types of humor. Today, he shares his thoughts on comedians, politics, adult sites, and Antarctica. There’s a lot to unpack, so stay tuned and enjoy the episode! Comedians and Connections In this episode, Dave shares countless stories about comedy clubs and how most of them nowadays are just there to get your name out. Back when Kill Tony was still a thing, it was a way for most up-and-coming comedians to enter the scene. But, more often than not, newer podcasts trying to emulate Kill Tony only want to bring on big names like Joe Rogan, which Mark pointed out that podcasts are not about connecting with more prominent comedians but with an actual audience. After all, an audience is what makes a star and not just the people you know. Funny enough, Dave made the same point later on, saying that it is not about fame but about having fun with the audience and your peers. Unfortunately, while Joe Rogan’s ideology that all comedians are peers, Dave Sarra believes otherwise because if it were that simple, then it would not be difficult for aspiring comedians to enter the stand-up industry. While Dave made an attempt and failed, he still tries to connect with other comedians because he genuinely enjoys the company of others like him. In the end, the connections that matter are the ones where you have the most fun. Conspiracies on Antarctica and Giant Culture Later on, Dave is asked the usual “Is Australia real?” question, which, interestingly enough, spiraled down into a discussion surrounding Antarctica. While he immediately confirmed that Australia is real, contrary to Flat Earthers’ beliefs, he still questioned why Antarctica surrounds the Earth on all its edges. For a moment, this question confused the hosts to the point that they thought Dave was a Flat Earther. Luckily, he was not, but that does not waver his concerns around Antarctica. Now, when he was asked what his favorite conspiracy theory is, to the hosts’ surprise again, Dave did not answer Antarctica but rather Giant Culture. At first, the three went on about a documentary-like show about giants, spiraling down once again into how redheads and dinosaurs prove that giants could have existed. While numerous studies have either debunked or proven it, giant culture remains a conspiracy that will always pique Dave Sarra’s interest. Outline of the Episode: [01:18] Dave talks about what he does and how he met Kelsey Hudgins. [06:50] How podcasts like Kill Tony were a way for up-and-coming comedians to be seen. [08:22] Dave’s experience being on Kill Tony and how much he sucked the first time. [10:55] What comedy bars are open in Los Angeles, and which ones charge too much. [44:02] Their answers to Dave’s question of “If you’re stuck on an island, which pornstar’s entire videography would you have with you?” [46:01] Dave’s countless experiences in his younger years and how some of them still turn him on. [53:02] Dave Sarra’s answer to “Is Australia real?” and his question of “Why is Antarctica surrounding the earth in all edges?” [57:29] Dave’s favorite conspiracy theory and why he loves Giant Culture. [01:00:27] Why Dave is concerned about Antarctica’s existence and how conspiracy theories around ‘child pornography’ are often dismissed. For complete show notes and for the full premium experience with video, visit our YouTube channel at CryptoNewsAlerts.net The pseudonymous Bitcoin trader who made the accurate call that BTC will fall by over 40% last year is back with another Bitcoin price prediction. This time, he says Bitcoin may be on a long-term path to $540,000. Dave the Wave relies on a chart shared by on-chain market analyst Willy Woo to illustrate that Bitcoin (BTC) is still in the earliest stage of the adoption life cycle. “If the current market represents 2.5%, then that would put price at 500K with 100% adoption/ full capitalization. This is the S curve.” According to Dave, Bitcoin’s growth in terms of market share is just getting started as those buying the number one cryptocurrency over the last 11 years are considered innovators which make up 2.5% of the total addressable market. Using the S-curve, Dave predicts that Bitcoin’s value will skyrocket to $540,000 as it captures a bigger percentage of the market share in the next decade or so. While Dave sees the possibility of Bitcoin meteorically rising 4,900% from its current value of $10,800 as extrapolated from the S-curve, the crypto strategist remains a skeptic of the stock-to-flow model (S2F) as he doesn’t expect Bitcoin to hit $100,000 by December 2021.

While Dave's CHASIN' THE BIRD has been delayed until October, you can still get your Chisholm fix with this earlier chat with Greg from March 17, 2017. Dave Chisholm may not have been in the comics industry long enough to achieve the 'rock star' status of someone like Jim Lee or Paul Pope, but in terms of creating both comics AND music, he's a band apart from just about every other creator out there. Because when you write and draw your own graphic novel (Instrumental from Z2 Comics), compose/perform a companion soundtrack to be released simultaneously WITH that graphic novel, AND have another full-length album of music from the band you front being released around the same time (Talking Under Water self-titled debut album on April 28th, 2017) . . . what other label is there? Decide for yourself after listening to this interview, where Greg talks with Dave about process both musical and sequential, the difficulty of getting the essence of sound across a silent medium, and more. Where else could you hear talk about Frank Quitely, Kevin Nowlan, and Brian Eno in the same discussion? And if that wasn't enough, you can hear of clips "Celebration" and "Death and the Narrator" (from "Instrumental"'s upcoming score) in the episode itself, PLUS the full "Celebration" track from the Multiversity Comics episode post page! BONUS: Here are the two other non-"Instrumental" pieces of music mentioned in the episode: "Tossing and Turning" from the Tossing and Turning EP by Talking Under Water   "Calligraphy" from Calligraphy by Dave Chisholm  Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. Jetpack Workflow is a company that helps accounting firm owners track down all the recurring debts and due dates to avoid losses. Dave Cristello, The CEO and founder of Jetpack Workflow realized that many accounting firms have numerous customers. However, they lacked an efficient checklist management system. The ideal Jetpack Workflow customer is any accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and tax firm in different parts of the world.  What You Will Learn How Dave launched Jetpack Workflow  How Dave identified the pain points that accounting firms face Why did Dave start interviewing the accounting departments of various companies? How Jetpack Workflow bagged its first customer How Dave invested in website development How Dave navigated the industry with zero software experience Why accounting firms should upgrade from using spreadsheets Which platforms did Dave go searching for a technical co-founder? Why entrepreneurs should know how to pitch their ideas Find out why Dave opted to raise money The impact of well-written words on your website How businesses can benefit from summarizing podcasts into a blog post or even a book In this Episode Many accounting firms have a proper project management system. However, if they cannot keep track of deadlines, customer data, and due dates the system becomes irrelevant. Jetpack workflow helps accounting firms standardize their operations.  Dave gives Geordie a comprehensive breakdown of the pain points that Jetpack Workflow strives to solve. Jetpack strives to eliminate pain points that accounting firms face to ensure they can beat deadlines.  While Dave did not have a job before starting Jetpack, he had a strong feeling that he wanted to build something. Dave went ahead and approached different companies. He says that he began interviewing the accounting departments of these firms through trial and error. Dave wanted to establish the most time consuming, tedious, and painful problem the departments were facing daily or even weekly.  From the responses he received, Dave was able to get reflection points. Listen in as he narrates the challenges he faced when developing a website. He also tells Geordie about the expenses they incurred. During the development process, Dave was working as a marketer and channeling all his earnings to the developers. The first year Jetpack managed 600 MRR, but Dave says their product was horrible.  What kept them going is the fact that the earliest adopters appreciated the product because it solved their pain points. When Jetpack workflow was at 5,000 MRR, Dave was experiencing a crazy relationship with his developer. He also felt that his product was terrible, even though some people were still using and appreciating it.  Many competitors were beginning to get into the market as well. To scale his company and stay ahead of competitors, Jetpack’s early investors advised Dave to bring onboard a technical co-founder. Listen in to find out how challenging finding a co-founder was. At some point, Dave’s advisors told him to hire somebody to drive the company, failure to which it would tumble down.  Dave narrates to Geordie how he managed to raise money to hire a professional in 2016 who is still with the company to date. During one of the meet-ups with other entrepreneurs, Dave noticed that nearly everybody was talking about the importance of Facebook ads. He decided to invest some money in Facebook ads just to see the outcome.  Listen as Dave narrates his journey with Facebook ads and how he pumped in more money on the project. In his opinion, Dave says companies that identify a reliable channel have a high chance of accelerating growth. However, he is quick to mention that there are downsides that come with accelerated growth.  Between Jetpack’s 5,000 to 30,000 MRR, Dave’s product was doing well. They were deleting some features and doing everything they could to clean their website. The company was enjoying some visibility, Dave managed to post content consistently, and they even launched a podcast. The team was also writing blog posts, sharing content, doing webinars, and running ads to market the company.  Geordie sought to find out what worked for Dave out of all the strategies he was using. However, he (Dave) was unable to pinpoint a single strategy that worked comprehensively. Instead, he says the company posted results from using a combination of all the strategies. Dave highlights the fact that he and his team were generating lots of content in a bid to develop a database. He is happy that this strategy worked to attract organic traffic to the website. His breaking point was when he discovered Facebook ads. Listen as Dave speaks about his breaking point at depth. Dave’s mantra is, “believe in yourself, and you will be able to achieve anything you want.”  Resources Dave Cristello Linkedin Dave Cristello Twitter Jetpack Workflow

But this episode is really special because we've got Dave Ebert (HBO, TruTV, MTV) on and he's one of the best in the industry at his craft and at giving advice! Dave is an amazing actor, director, and hustler! We discuss early jobs he had working in daycare and theater, to booking major national commercials and selling a TV show. While Dave is humble and very realistic about his accomplishments, he's also a HUGE DISNEY LOVER (nerd). This comes in handy as we call Timmy Dubz (yes that's a handle) and discuss how he's not going to work because of Covid and decides to take his family to Disney World instead. 44: Dave Kunst – Walk Around the World – Part 1

Ultrarunning History

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2020 34:25

By Davy Crockett  Who was the first person to truly walk around the world? If your search the Internet the answer that come back is: Dave Kunst, an American who claimed to do it in 1970-1974.  Dave Kunst, originally from Minnesota, claims that he is “the first person verified to have completed circling the entire land mass of the earth.” The previous parts of this series have hopefully taught the reader to be very skeptical of such claims. Is his claim true? Did he really walk around the entire world in 1970-1974? Was he the first? Was it truly independently verified, and how? Well, with any such bold claims there are problems with it, even if Guinness was at some point convinced to include it in their record book. The Kunst tale must be told and it will be covered in two parts. He was not the first to walk around the world. Konstantin Rengarten of Belarus and Latvia was the first in 1894-1898. (See Part 3). But I believe Kunst was the first to walk around the "world" in the modern, post-war era. His walk had the usual route and verification issues as other globetrotters before him. Kunst published a 1979 book about his walk, that is difficult to read. I will tell the tale primarily from the hundreds of newspaper articles published between 1970-1974, and I chose to not use addition tales from his book that were not mentioned in the newspapers. Dave Kunst’s walk inspired and entertained hundreds of thousands of people who witnessed it, read about it in the newspapers, and heard about it on television and radio. But sadly, the walk left within its wake, tragedy, death, heartbreak, deception, and betrayal. Thousands around the world thought the purpose of the Kunst walk was to support a humanitarian cause and they freely financially supported him. But actually, the walk was motivated by a man with a huge ego and with selfish intentions. The truth eventually came out and it surprised and disappointed many people with a shocking ending. Nevertheless, the walk happened, and in the decades that followed, Kunst would inspire thousands of youngsters to dare to fulfill their dreams. Before the walk Kunst family in 1940 census David William Kunst was born on July 16, 1939 at Caledonia, Minnesota where he was raised. His parents were Aloysious “Al” Kunst (1919-2010), a salesman, and Augusta Onstad Kunst (1921-2007). The family was longtime Minnesota residents. Dave’s grandfather, Frank Kunst, immigrated from Germany and was a harness maker. Dave’s mother’s family, the Onstads, immigrated from Norway. In his early years, Dave’s family lived with his Kunst grandparents in Caledonia. While Dave was young, his father Al served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was deployed to the Philippines. On his return he managed lumberyards and then became a salesman. Dave's father, Al Kunst Dave was raised in the Catholic faith and attended a private Catholic school which certainly exposed him to a greater level of rules from authority figures that influenced his later attitudes. He also participated in the scouting organization. He had two younger brothers, Pete and John. Dave said, “My mom had an adventurous spirit, and she instilled that in me during my Caledonia years.” His mom would at time drop him off to go hunting for three days in the woods. At times on those trips he wouldn't hunt but would cover 20-30 miles exploring. He would always come back in a good mood. Jan Wabner Kunst In 1959, Dave married young, at age 19, to Janice “Jan” Wabner, who became a very important figure in the walk story. In her senior yearbook it was written of her, “She can live without poetry, music or walking, but she can’t live without talking.” She was active is Chorus and Drama. Dave went to work for the local county and eventually led a team of surveyors that worked on the highways. In the 1960s the Kunsts had three children, Daniel, Debra, and Brad. In 1970, the Kunst family lived in Waseca, Minnesota.

In this week’s episode of Recovering from Reality, we get to hear from Dave, the host of the Dopey podcast. Dave and Alexis talk about his recovery journey, if AA is still “anonymous”, and what Dopey is all about. Dave is an awesome guy that has a way of turning the darkest experiences into the funniest stories.   His show Dopey is the perfect mix of discussion and debauchery, and has become one of the best recovery podcasts out there. At least we think so! I mean, he had Jaime Lee Curtis as a guest, how much better can you get? Recently, the show’s shift from silly to serious came with Chris’ tragic death. Dave has had to find a happy medium between laughter and mourning the loss of his friend. But it’s this vulnerability about his struggles that resonates with listeners the most. Back in the early days of Dave’s AA experience, he found himself shying away from the identity of “former addict”. There is still such a stigma around addiction, that he knew it would be hard to find work if he came out about it. This stigma is one that ordinary people face every day. And it is where the “anonymous” in Alcoholics Anonymous comes into play. Anonymity helps protect the people that are trying to get their lives back on track. Yet unfortunately as a public figure, Alexis didn’t have much of a choice in this department. She was recovering in the public eye, and everyone watched her struggle. Now after much growth, Alexis embraces her sobriety and her ability to speak out. She is out and proud about sobriety! And without people like her and Dave, the stigma will never end. Dave had a slightly different experience with anonymity. He attributes the program to his sobriety now, and took his anonymity very seriously in the beginning. An old sponsor told him that if he opened up and then relapsed while recording Dopey, he would be giving the 12-step fellowship a bad name. An old boss of his even said, “Once a junkie, always a junkie.” Sure, Dave was afraid of relapse and the risk of coming out about his issue, but after Chris’ death, he truly realized being vulnerable is really important to helping others. Chris was someone who knew all too well how important sobriety is, yet he couldn’t defeat his demons. He was 4 years sober when he relapsed, and died quickly after. Dave was in shock, and soon began to realize that not everyone recovers. This is what motivated him to continue with Dopey. The message of death is the strongest he could send to his listeners. And fighting through the mourning and grief and coming out with joy on the other side is truly inspirational. Remember, Alcoholics Anonymous is not the only method of healing. While AA helped Alexis in early recovery, she discovered her spiritual practice and holistic approach to be most helpful. But both Dave and Alexis agree that whatever works for you is what’s most important. Now that the whole world knows their story, Dave and Alexis have to share it with those most important to them: their children. While Dave’s 9-year old is too young to know all the details, she does know that her dad is sober and that he goes to meetings. Likewise, Alexis’ 6-year old daughter knows that her mom and dad don’t drink and they help other people stop drinking at Alo Recovery Center. Keeping things light and matter of fact with children is key. When Dave got clean, he realized he was doing the best he could do on drugs for 41 years. Now, he wants to see what his best is without them, in the next chapter of his life. If it weren’t for his desire to be a good father, he wouldn’t have gotten clean. He knew getting sober was the only way. Finally, Dave appreciates the adventure of sober living. He sincerely enjoys his life, and showing his genuine self to the world. “We spend so much time here on earth, frustrated about the highs and lows of living and expect life to be a certain way. But if everything was on a straight path, wouldn’t it be so boring?” It would feel more like death than life. “If you were happy all the time, there would be no happiness. Because you can’t compare the feeling to anything else.” We have to feel the lows to know the highs, and being sober allows you to check in with those emotions instead of check out from them. Instead of just living “bleh” life on drugs, you can live a beautiful life full of all the feels! With Dopey, Dave uses his voice to help others, because so many people helped him along the way. He spreads the message that if you are addicted to something, there IS joy on the other side. …And that looking back and laughing at our old, crazy selves can bring the greatest healing of all! #ANDSOITIS If you or someone you love needs help, please go to alorecovery.com

In this episode we welcome back long time community member Dave (alias in chatroom, “SuperDave”). Like some trader’s goals, Dave wants to eventually quit his full time job so we can work from home and be his own boss as a full time trader. While Dave has not yet accomplished the goal, he is well on his way and has actually cleared a key hurdle – that being, going from “full time hours” at his job to now only “part time hours”. How did Dave know when to make this jump? How will he know when it’s wise to make the move to “full time”? We talk about this and much more. Whether you are looking to also quit your job to become a full time trader or just want to pick up some nuggets of wisdom, this conversation has something for everyone. Let’s get to it! Notes: Today we speak again with community member SuperDave. To recap, Dave joined the community first to test the waters. During his earlier times here, he recalls being called out for trading without a true proper education or background. This led him to step back and reevaluate what his overall goal in trading was. After opening and closing 3 different accounts, Dave decided to focus on only trading SPY because it is extremely liquid and presents trading opportunities almost every day. He would use his account value to determine the amount of contracts he needed to trade. Dave started slow and steady one contract at a time and now is able to trade quite a bit larger. Dave had an ideal time frame in which he wanted to transition away from his job, retire, and trade for income. He missed his first two targets due to personal and family events but has maintained his longer term plan regardless. He has a strict routine and criteria for trading which he utilizes daily. It is this amount of seriousness that has set Dave up for success and why he is getting very close to his longer term goals of full time trading. Quotes: I knew right away that I was being called out because I didn’t really know what I was doing. It’s all about controlling your emotions. You’ll figure out a trading style fairly quickly but then you have to discipline yourself to stay with it and trust it. I don’t take a lot of risk with my money. Now is not the time to take on risk… now is the time to take on growth. Over time, things change and you become more comfortable from looking at it over and over. It becomes much more predictable. I’ve had some pretty large losses that were hard to swallow. Wondering why I was still in there and letting it go further and further. Links: https://claytrader.com/podcast/episode055/

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Foundations of Amateur Radio The topic of how radio evolves and embraces available technology is one that describes the hobby itself. From spark-gap through AM, SSB and FM our community picked up or invented solutions to make communication possible. When the internet came along it too became a tool ripe for picking and in 1997 a connection between a radio and the internet was made with the Internet Radio Linking Project or IRLP when Dave VE7LTD, a student at the University of British Columbia, joined the UBC Amateur Radio Society. Using a radio, some hardware and a computer, you could send audio between radios across the internet. Since then this field has exploded with D-STAR, Echolink, DMR, AllStar, Wires, CODEC2, System Fusion and Brandmeister. At a glance they're all the same thing, radio + internet = joy. Looking closer there are two distinct kinds of internet radio contraptions, those where the radio is digital and those where it's not. IRLP is an example of an analogue radio connecting to hardware that does the encoding into digital and transmission across the internet. At the other end the reverse process, decoding, happens and another analogue radio is used to hear the result. This encoding and decoding is done by a piece of software called a CODEC. If we continue for a moment down the analogue path, Echolink, AllStar and Wires do similar things. In 2002 Echolink made its way onto the scene, similar to IRLP, but it didn't need any specialised hardware, any computer running the Echolink software could be used as both a client and a server, that is, you could use it to listen to Echolink, or you could use it to connect a radio to another Echolink computer. AllStar, which started life in 2008 went a step further by making the linking completely separate. It uses the metaphor of a telephone exchange to connect nodes together, which is not surprising if you know that it's built on top of the open source telephone switching software Asterisk. In 2012 or so, Yaesu introduced Wires which is much like Echolink and AllStar. There are servers with rooms, not unlike chat rooms, where you connect a node to and in turn your radio. Blurring the lines between these technologies happened when you could build a computer that spoke both IRLP and Echolink at the same time. Now you can also add AllStar to that mix. Essentially these systems do similar things. They manage switching differently, handle DTMF differently, use a different audio CODEC and handle authentication in a variety of ways, but essentially they're ways of connecting normal hand-held radios, generally FM, to each other via the internet using intermediary computers called nodes. Before you start sending angry letters, I know, there's more to it, but I've got more to tell. While Dave was busy in Canada inventing IRLP back in the late 1990's, in Japan the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications funded research, administered by the Japan Amateur Radio League into the digitisation of amateur radio. In 2001 that research resulted in what we know today as D-STAR. Two years later, ICOM started developing D-STAR hardware which resulted in actual physical radios less than a year later. Today you can get D-STAR hardware from ICOM, Kenwood and FlexRadio Systems. Unlike the other technologies where the audio was converted at a central place, in D-STAR the audio is encoded in the radio and a digital signal is sent across the airwaves. That in turn means that the software that does the encoding, the CODEC, needs to be inside the radio. Since the information is digital right from the point of transmit, you can send other information, like GPS locations and messages along with the audio. In 2005 DMR started life as a group of companies, now up to around 40, agreeing on some standards for digital audio in much the same way as D-STAR. Mostly in use by commercial users, DMR has the ability to have two users simultaneously on-air using alternate channels by having separate time slots for each channel, alternating between the two of them. They agreed to use the same CODEC to ensure compatibility. Formal interoperability testing has been happening since 2010, but because DMR allows manufacturers to build in extra features many brands cannot actually work together on the same network. For many years D-STAR and DMR-MARC, the DMR Motorola Amateur Radio Club World Wide Network, were the main digital radio systems around in amateur radio. That changed in 2013 when Yaesu introduced System Fusion. It too made digital audio at the radio, but it added a wrinkle by making it possible to have both analogue and digital audio on the same repeater. Depending on how the repeater is configured, analogue and digital radios can coexist and communicate with each other. The Wires system that Yaesu rolled out was upgraded in 2016, renamed to Wires X and now also incorporates digital information to allow the linking of their System Fusion repeaters. In 2014 at the Ham Radio Exhibition in Friedrichshafen in Germany, Artem R3ABM planned to make an alternative master server for DMR+ and DMR-MARC and the result was a German wordplay which we know today as Brandmeister. It acts as a network for digital radios in much the same way as DMR, but it's run as an open alternative to the commercially available options made by Motorola and Hytera. The story isn't complete without mentioning one other development, CODEC2. It started in 2008 when Bruce Perens K6BP contacted Jean-Marc Valin, famous for the SPEEX audio compressor and David Rowe VK5DGR about the proprietary and patented nature of low data use voice encoders such as those in use in D-STAR, DMR and System Fusion. David had already been working in this area a decade earlier and started writing code. In 2012 during Linux Conference Australia, Jean-Marc and David spent some time together hacking and managed to make a 25% improvement and CODEC2 was well under way. Today CODEC2 forms the basis of several projects including FreeDV in software, the SM1000 FreeDV adaptor in hardware and the roadmap for the future of open and free digital voice is bright. I should mention that this information is specifically brief to give you an overview of the landscape and hopefully I've not made too many glaring errors, but feel free to drop me a line if you do find a problem. Digital radio and the internet, it's not just a single mode, a whole cloud of modes, and I haven't even started with WSPR, FT8 or JT65. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

It was a short, but very entertaining week of Barstool Radio. On Tuesday we were joined by Julie Stewart-Binks to recap the weekend of college football, and got a call from Mr. Portnoy to complain about the issues his "Mr. Johnson" is having in his new underwear. Dave leaves for Boston on Wednesday to execute #OperationClownface, which unfortunately means that he missed Bar Rescue's Jon Taffer in the office. Thursday was the season opener for the Pats, and open season for KMarko. While Dave was distributing clownface towels out to Pats fans, KMarko was distributing deathblows to clowns on the internet. Also Chaps calls in to explain that he fucks weird. Friday we recap the success of #OperationClownface despite the Pats opening night loss, interview the rat fuckin' narc that is @OldTakesExposed, and pepper All Business Pete about his terrible haircut and love for murdering dogs. All this and more on Barstool Radio.

At a young age, Dave’s father introduced him to fishing and sparked a lifelong passion to experience and enjoy life in the great outdoors. Growing up in Eugene, Oregon, his stomping grounds were and remain legendary namesakes such as Crane Prairie and Hosmer Lakes as well as the Deschutes, McKenzie and Umpqua Rivers to name a few. While Dave quickly discovered the thrill of having a fish on, it was the awe of his surroundings that instilled his deep passion for fishing and conservation. Dave has dedicated his professional life to the fly fishing industry and has spent the last twenty-plus years relentlessly trying to surpass expectations as a guide, outfitter owner, conservationist, and fly fishing ambassador. Dave is quick to note that he is nothing in his pursuits without his wife Natalie and daughter Nessa, who constantly remind him why he is so inspired without saying a word. In addition to co-owning and operating Emerald Water Anglers, Dave is a Patagonia Ambassador, Winston, Rajeff Sports, and Bauer Pro Staff Member; FFF Certified Casting Instructor; and widely published photographer.

You know that graduate student who gets the lucky draw to help with those “fun” summer projects? Yep, that was my role when I first met today's podcast guest. Now, to be honest, the summer project wasn't too bad. I had the opportunity to help measure the results with a new fly tag project by taking photos of cattle each week for an entire summer. There are definitely worse ways to spend Monday mornings than stalking cows around pastures with camera in tow. Thank goodness there is technology to help count the flies in the pictures or I may have really gone cross-eyed. On Episode 017 of the Agriculture Proud podcast, I am joined by Dave Thomas. He is the Dairy Insecticide Marketing Manager for Bayer Animal Health, based out of Tennessee. I was able to catch up with Dave on a recent trip to Kansas City when we sat down to talk about everything flies and fly control around cattle. I've received numerous reports of this being a particularly bad year for pinkeye in cattle, so it should be a relevant topic for many across the country. While Dave's current role focuses on fly control in dairy cattle, he has spent much of his life working around beef cattle, so we're able to touch on both sides of the conversation. It's not all fly tags and pour on. There are many options for fly control and figuring out which is best may often depend on what your situation is – on season, environment or type of animal. It's often best to use a combination of products instead of sticking with a lone fly control method. Dave Thomas fills us in on the different types of fly control options out there and what you should look for when trying to choose which type is best for you. If you have any questions on this topic, leave them in the comments section below and we'll work to get them answered. To learn more, visit with your local University Extension livestock specialists. That's right! We're actually back! Many apologies for the several month hiatus between episodes. You can mostly blame Dave (he elaborates on the podcast). Hopefully, though, we will now be putting up episodes every Sunday (and working on streamlining the post-production process so as to reduce any further delays). Anyways, thanks for sticking with us, and on with the review! As you likely deduced from the podcast title, Dave and Diane review The Hangover this week. Directing: Diane didn't have much to say, but Dave thought that Todd Phillips (director of such movies as Starsky & Hutch and Old School) did a solid job relative to his previous directing efforts. Acting: Overall, Dave and Diane both generally enjoyed the acting. Diane's favorite performance was from Ed Helms (Stu), while Dave's was Zach Galifianakis as Alan. The hosts had an "interesting" discussion of Bradley Cooper (Phil). Music: The soundtrack of this film appealed to Diane's pop-music sensibilities (with tracks such as "Who Let the Dogs Out"), while Dave appreciated its use of older tracks (such as "Joker and the Thief"). Diane generally approved of the music in the film, while Dave thought it served its purpose, but that the music was not overly great. Plot: Diane was quite a fan of the plot in this film. She said in some ways it was rather brilliant, mostly due to a very unique set of comical devices (despite a very clichéd set-up for the movie's story). Dave had similar feelings. He quite enjoyed the humor, which he said was rather smart (despite sometimes resorting to some more low-brow gags). While Dave did not overly enjoy the plot, he felt it served the humor quite well. Overall Score: Both Dave and Diane had similar feelings on this film. While it was certainly not Oscar material, the hosts thought it was a very decent comedy with plenty of good laughs. Diane gave the film a B+, and Dave gave it a B. No Dave's DVD this week! Additional Notes: Dave would like to apologize for his audio levels being a bit high (creating a few rough spots). He's still getting back into the swing of audio editing. The intro music of this episode was provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network.
