This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Kettering, Ohio, to discuss the case of Erica Baker, a 9-year-old girl who had her whole life ahead of her. On February 7th 1999, Erica set off to Indian Riffle Park with her Shih Tzu, Jamie, after not being able to go to a father daughter dance that was occurring in the park's community center that evening. Hours passed, and day turned to night. Sadly, Erica never made it home that evening. What should have been just a simple outing to the park turned into one of Ohio's biggest unsolved missing persons cases in history. **CW/TW** Mentions of SA/CP and murder of a minor On February 7, 1999, Erica Baker stepped out of her small home in Kettering, Ohio, wearing her raincoat and leashed up her beloved dog. She was on her way to the local park. It was a cold, rainy winter afternoon. Little did anyone know that this would be the last time they would ever see Erica. Neighbors, family members, and investigators have searched for answers ever since that fateful day, but 24 years later, the unanswered questions remain. What happened to Erica in that park that day? Did someone snatch her away? Or did she wander off and get lost? The possibilities are endless, and the investigation still haunts the community. Erica Nicole Baker was born on June 22, 1989 and was 3'11 and weighed 65 pounds at the time of her disappearance. Erica's parents Greg Baker and Misty Baker were divorced at the time, and Erica stay primarily with her mother. On February 7th at around 3:30 PM, Erica asked her mother if she could take her dog, a Shih Tzu named Jamie, for a walk. Her mother initially said no, because it was raining and she didn't want Erica to catch a cold. But Erica persisted and promised to wear a raincoat over her Winnie the Pooh sweater. Her mother has since regretted that decision, and hasn't seen her daughter since. When Erica had not returned home after a reasonable amount of time, her mother began to worry and began to search for Erica. Her anxiety level would only increase when shortly after she began searching, Erica's dog, Jamie, was found walking in the street, with his leash still attached. Police were then called and the official search began. The search lasted thru the night and continued into the following days. Authorities even drained a 2.9 million gallon retention pond at the Kettering Rec Center in hopes of finding Erica.

9 YR old Erica Baker goes missing while walking her dog in Kettering, OH. Her body has never been found
Melissa opens Season 4 with a vexing case out of Soutwest Ohio – the town of Kettering, where on February 7, 1999, nine year-old Erica Baker took her aunt’s dog for a walk and never returned. The dog, with leash still attached, was found just an hour after Erica left the house. And this disappearance is not just frustrating and sad (as all cold or missing person cases are). It is also weird. Because even though someone was arrested and convicted of being involved in young Erica’s death, it really…wasn’t…solved. It seems that witness accounts indicated that Erica may have been struck by a van near the recreation center where the dog was found. A crack addict by the name of Christian John Gabriel who with two others had been fleeing in a van after stealing from the local Meijer store, eventually confessed that he may have hit a girl while driving the van and that he and his accomplices buried the body at a local state park. But then he changed the story – claiming one of the others – on Jan Marie Franks (now deceased) – was actually driving the van. Today he claims that all of his confessions were untrue and that he wasn’t involved at all in Erica’s disappearance. Police have spent innumerable hours and dollars looking for Erica’s remains based on Gabriel’s various confessions, but have never found anything. Eventually Gabriel and his cohorts were convicted of the Meijer robbery – and Gabriel was convicted in 2005 of gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. Gabriel served six years in prison and has been free since 2011. And through all of this, no one has actually been convicted of killing Erica Baker – and neither she, her remains nor any sign of her whatsoever has emerged. If you know anything that may lead to the truth about what happened to her – or where her remains might be found, please call the Kettering Police Department at (937) 296-2555.
February 7, 1999. Kettering, Ohio. Nine-year old Erica Baker leaves her family's home to take their dog for a walk. While a pair of eyewitnesses see Erica in a nearby park, she soon vanishes without a trace and the dog is found unattended. Six years later, a suspect named Christian Gabriel is indicted on the charges of evidence tampering and abuse of a corpse after confessing that he was in a van which fatally struck Erica in a hit-and-run accident before the responsible parties disposed of her body. Even though Gabriel recants his confession, he winds up being convicted on these charges and serves nearly six years in prison. Numerous searches fail to turn up Erica's body and following his release, Gabriel still does not divulge the location of her remains. Was Gabriel being truthful in his original confession or did something else happen to Erica? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of the most frustrating missing children's cases you'll ever hear about. If you have information about this case, please contact the Kettering Police Department (937) 296-2555. 9 year-old Erica Baker went for a walk with her family dog one February afternoon and never returned. Her sudden disappearance shook an Ohio suburb to the ground. In our inaugural episode, Mick takes Tommy through the journey of a hometown trauma, and her first experience with what these crimes can do to a community.
It took five years to identify one of the people who was with 9-year-old Erica Baker at the moment she took her last breath. But without a body, police only have only that witnesses' word about what happened - and the fact that he won't reveal the body's location suggests he might not be telling the whole story. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Music: More Than You Believe You Are, by Michael McFarland. http://michaelmcfarlandmusic.com Additional music: Audionautix- The Great Unknown, and The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch

We talk a lot about the wage gap at On The Dot because, girlfriend, it’s 2018 and it’s still a dang issue. Let’s talk about what you can do when you find out Lazy Larry in your office gets paid more than you for the same position. First, do some research about what your position is worth, including benefits and bonuses, and talk to others in your field about their compensation. Yep, that’s right, I’m giving you permission to talk about the big M word—money. Be sure to practice negotiating before asking for that raise, and most of all, believe you are worth it! Erica Baker is a Senior Engineering Manager at Patreon and has spent the last ten plus years tracking down her family tree from every source imaginable, including family, online databases, microfiche, and documents sitting in libraries. Some may look at ancestry and genealogy as a silly hobby, but for Erica, it's about filling out the story not just for her own family but hopefully someday for every other African American family as well.
Diversity advocate and Kickstarter director Erica Baker and ProDay CEO Sarah Kunst talk with Recode's Kara Swisher about the conditions that led so many venture capitalists to abuse their power over female tech founders. Kunst, who was sexually harassed by 500 Startups founder Dave McClure, says the time has come to "turn the lights on full blast" and expose bad actors rather than tiptoeing around the problem. Baker, who gained a reputation as a "troublemaker" from her efforts to make Google salaries more transparent, theorizes that harassment and exclusion have run rampant because of the cult of specialness around coding ability, and calls out tech companies that are not holding themselves accountable. Kunst also explains what's wrong with Reid Hoffman's decency pledge and why former Uber engineer Susan Fowler was the "perfect victim." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
