Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - It is only two weeks until President Donald Trump decides whether to impose 25% tarrifs on Canada and Mexico. There is some question whether he will follow through. Trump was initially going to impose the tarrifs on February 4, but the previous day Wall Street's three main indices fell sharply over concerns about the global economy. The stock market recovered that afternoon after Trump announced he would postpone the tarrifs for a month. However Canadians are preparing for the worst and, on the local level, one of the topics discussed at yesterday's Strathcona Gardens Commission meeting is impact Trump's proposed tarrifs could have on Campbell River's $130 million REC-reate Strathcona Gardens project. Commissioner Cal Grunerud raised the question: “ What's happening with America.” Commissioner Ron Kerr stressed, “This is a tariff that is definitely going to raise our costs.” Wolfgang Parada, Senior Engineering Manager with the Strathcona Regional District, assured the Comissioners that steps are already being taken to minimize any impact. “The first thing is looking at the contracts, what type of contract the general contractor has with the trades. It's under the duties and taxes, basically the trades are only responsible for those duties and taxes when they bid for the project. Anything extra will be billed to the general contractor. The general contractor will pass it to us.” “We need to work carefully to minimize the impact to the project and the first thing that we have done is we asked the General Contractor to compile a list of materials and equipment coming from the States.” “This is very preliminary right now because if the tariffs are implemented to Canada, that doesn't affect the project. It will only affect the project when Canada retaliates and put tariffs on the States, if those tariffs are related to some of the materials that are coming for this project. That list is being developed at this point. We need to understand what suppliers we have here in Canada, if there are alternatives. We need to look at the status of the solutions.” “This is not an easy process. When we hire a trade, that trade needs to submit shop drawings. Those shop drawings are approved. They need to procure the equipment. Once they buy the equipment, they ship the equipment from the States. Once they cross the border, that's when they pay the tax.” Parada explained they are trying to assess which materials can be brought into Canada before the tarrifs are implemented. They are also trying to identify Canadian alternatives for some products. “I'm happy to provide an update as soon as I have more information, but we know it's critical. We're ahead of the game and we're hoping that the project budget and as well as the schedule doesn't get impacted by the tariffs.” David Leitch, CAO of the SRD, added, “If there's going to be a negative impact, we're going to let our MP, MLA and the province know because they will be hurting us.”

On today's episode we talked with Eric Scouten, Senior Engineering Manager at Adobe, who has been working for the last four years on solving content authenticity. What does that mean? We'll get into it in the episode, but suffice it to say that it's an effort to bring trust to content online. Was the pope really photographed in that puffy jacket? Was the photo of a war zone really taken this week, or is that from several years ago? And we'll get into how to identify the identity of the individual or business behind the content, in a privacy-preserving way.We talk about adoption of the C2PA standard, how the content authenticity initiative recruited so many of the most influential tech and media platforms, and how Adobe built the conviction to ship the first versions into production despite a cold start problem. We also talk about the user experience of content authenticity, both from the creator side and consumer side, and some thornier issues including potential for censorship and deceit. This is a fascinating episode into an emerging standard that I believe will be an important part of all our lives over the coming years, and example of incredible innovation coming from a large technology company. You can learn more about the Content Authenticity Alliance at https://contentauthenticity.org/ and you can find more about the C2PA standard at https://c2pa.org/Subscribe to our weekly newsletter for more announcements related to the future of identity at trinsic.id/podcastReach out to Riley (@rileyphughes) and Trinsic (@trinsic_id) on Twitter. New data published by LinkedIn to coincide with Engineers Week provides insights into the Irish software sector derived from software engineers in Ireland who are active on LinkedIn. It reveals what Irish software professionals value most when evaluating new job opportunities. Almost seven in ten (69%) software engineers in Ireland ranked flexible work arrangements as the biggest motivating factor when switching jobs, higher than salary and benefits (61%). The third most important factor signalled by the research participants is a healthy work-life balance, flagged by 61% of respondents. Demand for software engineers in Ireland outstrips supply, with a steady flow of talent coming into the country. LinkedIn's data shows that the top five sources of talent for the Irish software sector are India, the UK, Brazil, Turkey, and the Netherlands, respectively. Given the level of demand for software engineers in the country, one issue that should be addressed in order to create a larger pool of talent is tackling the gender divide. In Ireland, a staggering 83% of software professionals are male, with just 17% female. Digging deeper into the data, it appears that there is a glass ceiling in the sector, with women holding proportionally more junior roles. LinkedIn's analysis shows that women's share of non-leadership roles is distinctly higher than their overall representation in the sector, suggesting that the balance could shift further in years to come - Junior Software Engineer (22%), Associate Software Engineer (28%) and Software Engineer Intern (30%). LinkedIn's data also revealed the top employers in the Irish software sector, with Workday, Amazon Web Services, Ericsson and Mastercard ranking among the top five employers of software engineers. Over the past year, the highest levels of recruitment were recorded by Workday, Mastercard and Fidelity Investments. Ireland's third-level institutions play a significant role in providing talent to the industry. The largest provider of talent is Technological University Dublin, followed by UCD, Trinity College, Dublin City University and the University of Galway, respectively. Commenting on the analysis, Deirdre Hogan, Senior Engineering Manager at LinkedIn, said: "Demand for software engineers in Ireland continues to soar. In order to bolster supply, we need to address the gender imbalance in the industry, with women only accounting for 17% of professionals in the sector. If the industry can shift the dial in this regard, then a sustainable flow of talent can be established to meet the needs of employers." "One factor which may help to address the gender divide for software engineers is hybrid working. Anecdotally our research would seem to indicate that it is a jobseeker's market for software professionals in Ireland, as flexible working is the main driver for software engineers when switching roles - in contrast to most sectors where salary remains the primary motivator. Offering flexibility can boost a company's ability to attract talent, with a work culture that accommodates people's individual needs, broadening an employer's potential pool of candidates in the process."

Magda Miu, Senior Engineering Manager at Adobe, discusses the importance of mentoring and shares her experiences as both a mentor and mentee. She highlights the benefits of mentoring, explains how she created a program at Adobe, and offers tips for others looking to organize something similar in their organization.Sign up to the Level-up Engineering newsletter! In this interview we're covering:Magda's personal experience with mentoringHow to seek mentorsMagda's mentoring program at AdobeKey takeaways from the programExcerpt from the interview:"Many people view mentoring as a one-way street, and understanding that it's actually a two-way street only comes after you've been on both sides: being a mentee and a mentor later on. As a mentee, you may think your mentors won't gain anything from helping you, but the reality is different. Being a mentor improves your communication skills, so that you can resonate with all sorts of people. You also gain knowledge, because your mentee will share stories and challenges from their industry. If there's an age gap between the mentor and mentee, it's also a chance to get new perspectives from a different age group. Last but not least, the feeling of helping others and giving back is just extremely rewarding. It's an amazing feeling to see your mentee improve in their career."

Any large organization with multiple products faces the challenge of keeping their brand identity unified without denying each product its own charisma. That's where a design system can help developers avoid reinventing the wheel every time, say, a new button gets created On this sponsored episode of the podcast, we talk with Demian Borba, Principal Product Manager, and Kelvin Nguyen, Senior Engineering Manager, both of Intuit. We chat about how their design system is evolving into a platform, how AI keeps their brand consistent, and why a design system doesn't have to solve every use case. Episode notesTreating a design system as a platform means providing a baseline of tokens—colors, typography, themes—and allowing developers to deviate so long as they use the right tokens. Alongside a company-wide push towards greater AI usage, Intuit's design system team is beginning to leverage AI to help developers make better design decisions. As an example, they're including typeahead functionality to suggest possible solutions to design decisions. The team is using a Figma plugin to manage a lot of the heavy lifting. Their presentation at Config 2022 built a lot of excitement for what's possible. Congrats to RedVelvet, who won a great question badge for The most efficient way to remove first N elements in a list?Find Kelvin and Demian on Linkedin.

Janell Nelson became an engineer because she enjoyed the individual nature of the work but quickly found herself drawn to leadership. She accepted the challenges of working in a male-dominated field and having few women in leadership positions she could emulate. However, when she was already an experienced and successful manager and found herself pigeonholed based solely on gender, she decided to do what she could to bring more women into STEM leadership roles. Currently a Senior Engineering Manager at Canon Medical Informatics, Janell is active in her local community. She works with engineering and STEM programs for girls and young women at every stage of education, from elementary school to college. The future of STEM leadership and global competitiveness is in the hands of today's students. Key takeaways I've only had one female leader that was in the engineering side above me in my 20-year career. Changing the status quo means reaching back into the community to encourage more girls to be interested in STEM programming and showing them the career path is possible. Graduation rates for female engineers are around 18%, which makes it hard. There are just not that many young women right now who have a background or an interest. Those who are interested face challenges in an industry where they may have to fight harder than their peers and may not always fit in. Diversity is not just a matter of equality; it's critical for global success and competition. For example, if you only employ people who live in the Midwest, you only have a very small bubble of thought patterns you're pulling from. You can't be a global company if you're only focusing on how you see the world. If we all think the same way, we run into problems such that the AI doesn't recognize everybody who might use it. A classic example was AI which couldn't see the facial features of somebody who wasn't white. That's a problem. That's why diversity is not optional — it's essential. The soft skills that many women bring are also essential to creating connections and building teams. If you step back and look at the whole reality, it's never just one team that builds anything. You need to connect to other teams and the rest of the business, not just within engineering but with support teams, install teams, sales teams, and marketing teams. Soft skills are a great asset to making that happen, and that helps the whole company. Suppose we don't have women in leadership roles, being role models for the next generations and helping to influence how we hire and who we bring in. In that case, we will never be able to increase our diversity and increase the number of women within this industry. To change something as fundamental as what people want to do for their career, you make connections and go to local schools. It's hard to do it globally. Kids resonate with people who show up for them. Elementary school is the most critical time because middle school kids are heavily influenced by peer pressure, and most of the kids in STEM classes are boys. The solution is to get more girls in those classes and normalize it as a choice. I've seen it work, even with third through fifth graders who were economically challenged and going through difficulties at home. The presence of an encouraging adult may be all they need to follow through on their natural abilities and talents. Students who I worked with in elementary school are now receiving academic achievement awards in middle school and following through with STEM classes. You don't have to do it all yourself. An employee resource group is a change to influence your company's direction and make a lasting impact on children's lives and the future of our country. There are great companies out there building leaders. I worked at an Aetna company. The Aetna trainings helped me be the leader that I am today. They focused on building their female leaders, which helped me understand how I should be doing things. Quote of the show: 6:23 “If you don't have diversity in thought patterns, let's just say we're only going to employ people that live in the Midwest, you only have a very small bubble of thought patterns that you're going from. And you can't be a global company if you're only focusing on how you see the world… That's why you need diversity..." He talks about the role of engineering managers in engineer coaching and career development. https://codingsans.com/engineering-management-newsletter?utm_source=Podcast&utm_medium=platforms (Sign up to the Level-up Engineering newsletter!) In this interview we're covering: Managers in engineer coaching Daily engineer coaching Coaching engineers in their career development Steps in engineers' career development Coaching engineers to be flexible Coaching engineers when choosing tracks Challenges of the leadership track Excerpt from the interview: "The key is that you're working with people; they're not just resources. People have things that happen in their lives, within and outside of work as well. Both are important, because they determine how they feel. You must be ready to manage your team's feelings. They're humans, and sometimes they'll be more excited to be at work, and other times, they'll be more focused on their personal lives. Engineering managers can ensure that the team is able to talk about these feelings. If you're not mindful of that, you might as well have robots working with you." https://codingsans.com/blog/engineer-coaching?utm_source=Podcast&utm_medium=platforms (Click here to read the full interview!)
