Episode 115 Joan Webster25 year-old Joan Webster was a second year architecture student at Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1981 and had a bright future ahead of her. But on November 28th of that year, Joan vanished. She had just arrived at Logan Airport in Boston after flying home from NJ to see her family for the Thanksgiving holiday. As a cab driver helped began to load her suitcase into his taxi, an unkown man stopped Joan and told her that they shouldn't take that taxi. Joan told the cabbie that she was with the man, and picked up the suitcase and walked away with the man to a nearby car parked in the taxi row. The bewildered cab driver dismissed the incident, and looked for his next fare. Joan Webster was never seen alive again. When her boyfriend, a fellow student at Harvard realized Joan hadn't come back to school following the holiday, he called her parents. That's when they realized Joan was missing, and reported her as such on December 2, 1981. That same day, Joan's red purse and her wallet - with about $100 in cash missing - were found, 14 miles north of Logan Airport. A man found them in a marsh - a known dumping ground for criminal elements - in Saugus, MA. Her tote bag, which she carried her credit cards and checkbooks in, as well as her suitcase were still missing. On January 29th, 1982 Joan's suitcase was found in a Greyhound Bus terminal. Extensive searches of the areas around the airport turned up no signs of Joan herself. Over the years, Joan's parents where called multiple times by people demanding money for information they supposedly had about Joan. One caller urged the authorities to look into another murder and named a suspect in the murder, but it failed to lead to Joan. Finally, in 1990, almost a decade after she vanished, Joan's remains were found along a creek area off Chabacco rd in Hamilton, Massachusetts, almost 30 miles north of Logan Airport where Joan was last seen. She was found nude; the victim of a homicide with evidence of head trauma. Due to the passage of time, and exposure to the elements, not much was apparently found in the way of physical evidence, and the case remains unsolved. The best clue in the case is the mystery man seen by the cab driver with Joan at Logan Airport. He never came forward, and was not identified. If you have information about Joan's case, please call the Hamilton, MA police at 978-468-1212Joan's sister-in-law Eve Carson, who has written 2 books on Joan's case joins me in this episode to discuss the mystery of what happened to Joan. It was a brisk April morning in 1990 when a woman walking her dog stopped cold in her tracks. She reeled back from something strange and disturbing blocking the drainage tile: a human skull. Forensic examination showed that it was the remains of Joan Webster, the 25-year-old Harvard graduate student whose disappearance had rattled the community and stumped investigators for the past eight and a half years. The prosecutors had a suspect, Leonard Paradiso, who was tried and convicted for the murder of another local woman. The only similarity between the entangled crimes was that both victims had long dark hair. Assistant District Attorney Tim Burke was obsessed with proving Paradiso guilty of both murders. However, between the lack of evidence and ever-changing stories, the circumstances of Joan Webster's death remains a mystery to this day.Hope is not lost as Joan's sister-in-law, Eve Carson, continues to fight for justice. Simple, Safe & Secret divulges the diabolical details and dysfunctional system that has denied and obstructed justice in solving Joan Webster's murder case. The messy truth of the botched investigation and a wrongful conviction may be darker than the story of Joan's murder itself. SIMPLE, SAFE & SECRET: The 1981 Murder of Joan L. Webster-Eve Carson

Tonight's special guest is Eve Carson from Indianapolis, Indiana, a true crime author and whistle blower, who's recent book is "Mommy's A Mole," the story of the still-unresolved 1981 murder of her sister-in-law, Joan Webster. Our show will focus, however, on how Eve's own children became abuse victims right under her nose! "Behavioral changes in my children were the first sign of trouble," she says. Family counselors involved with the family fragmented communication and complicated the issues. After the discovery of her daughter's written allegations of sexual abuse by her father, numerous professionals and law enforcement were involved. The system failed the victims. A mother trying to protect her children, Eve became a victim herself, alienated from her children by the paternal family. She'll discuss the dysfunctional system and the difficulty to identify abusers. False reports of abuse in our society leave real victims vulnerable and deny them the proper support for healing. The tendency to shun and vilify someone coming forward compounds the abuse for the children and the alienated parent. Eve learned the behaviors, not words, of the alleged offender and the victims are the key to understanding the truth. She writes, "Being vocal is critical to help victims of abuse. I look forward to working with you and continuing to bring awareness to a problem that scars so many lives. There are so many silent victims." She continues, "I want that part of my experience to be out there. When the system failed, it left my children without the love and support they need. It also opened my eyes to the patterns of abuse in the family. Support groups need to be better educated." See her BLOG

Karen Wolfe Churgin walked her dogs on April 18, 1990, on her remote wooded property on Chebacco Road. The veterinarian spotted a white sphere obstructing a drainage ditch.  When she reached to dislodge it, she reeled back in horror. She immediately called the police. “I saw something in the woods that looked like a punched-in volleyball,” Karen told the Beverly Times on April 25, 1990. “I looked closer and it was a human skull. It had suture-like zigzagged lines. Those are unique to human skulls.” Officer Hatfeld was the first to respond, and the initial conclusion determined the discovery was, indeed, a human skull. Hamilton Police Chief Walter Cullen arrived at the scene next and photographed the find. The Massachusetts State Police Crime Prevention and Control Unit, CPAC, dispatched Cpl. Dennis Marks to take charge of the crime scene. Local police sent the skull and a nearby black boot to Hunt Memorial Hospital to examine, but nothing else surfaced in the initial cursory search of the surrounding area. Notices went out to departments to assist the resident force, and names poured in to compare the cranium to known missing persons. Joan Webster’s name appeared on the list, but the resting spot was more than thirty miles from the long-speculated crime scene at Pier 7 in Boston. “Of course, it’s being checked out, but the location doesn’t seem to correlate. Circumstances pointed to her being taken out in a boat and dumped at sea. MOMMY'S A MOLE-Unraveling The Joan Webster Murder and Other Secrets in a CIA Family-Eve Carson
