Make it make sense. Known pedophile, child porn distributor and trafficker Randy Volar is arrested by police in Kenosha, Wisc., in 2018. Hundreds of abuse videos of underage Black girls are found in his possession. He is released the same day without bond. Two months later, one of his victims, Chrystul Kizer, kills him. She's 17 and has been trafficked since she was 16. Last month, a Wisconsin judge sentenced her to 11 years behind bars. Her story is one of failures on all levels by society, adults and a system that did nothing to protect her. After we tell Chrystul's story, we welcome on Kelly Diane Galloway, president and founding director of Project Mona's House, the only restorative shelter for survivors of human trafficking in the U.S. located in Buffalo, NY. This amazing woman has so much insight into helping us understand what what wrong here and why society is misunderstanding the nuances of trafficking. Because Chrystul is not alone — Cyntoia Brown, Pieper Lewis, Maryanne Atkins and just a few of the victims who chose to protect themselves from horrible men and were punished as a result. As we mention in the episode, if you want to send your support to Chrystul, she's serving time at the Taycheedah Correctional Institution. You can send her letters to the address below, or visit penmateapp, which offers a few other options for sending mail to an inmate, like directly from your phone, for a small fee. For years, Preston Shipp served as an appellate prosecutor in the Tennessee Attorney General's office. While serving as a volunteer and teaching college classes for a conservative Christian College in Tennessee prisons, he became good friends with many people who were incarcerated, one of whom he had actually prosecuted. These relationships caused Preston to wake up to the many injustices that are present in the American system of mass incarceration In his book, Confessions of a Former Prosecutor: Abandoning Vengeance and Embracing True Justice, published in April 2024, he discusses meeting Cyntoia Brown. The amazing part of this start is that he had been the Attorney General who argued (successfully) against her appeal. But that all changed as she joined his class. Listen to this remarkable story of transformation as Preston Shipp walks us through how his thinking changed and how we went from a tough on crime prosecutor, to a crusader for reform.

Since her release in 2019, Cyntoia Brown Long has been able to travel the U.S. speaking about her experience within the criminal justice system where she was tried as an adult and placed in a womens' prison at the age of 16. Her story started long before her arrest, however, and long before she found herself fearing for her life in the home of a man who offered to pay her for sex. Cyntoia shares about her journey out of early childhood foster care and into a loving adoptive family–a journey that was still weighed down by crises of identity and belonging. Her story is one of resilience and faith, and shows how the prison system in the United States should evolve in order to consider the trauma histories of children in the courts. ... When things aren't working out, most of us white-knuckle the wheel and believe we can think our way out of the problem. This episode's guest is teaching you how to surrender. Cyntoia Brown-Long shares her UNBELIEVABLE testimony of being convicted of murder, trying to THINK her way out of prison, and then finding a level of spiritual surrender few of us ever reach. After 15 total years behind bars, she walked out of prison a free woman in a totally IMPOSSIBLE situation where every door had closed. Her attorneys were baffled, but Cyntoia was not. She always knew she would be set free. How the heck did that happen? In this episode Cyntoia details a remarkable story of LETTING GO and LETTING GOD. Get ready for the unapologetically spiritual and inspirational conversation we all need right now.

Many people know the verse "to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). But what does living out that verse look like in dealing with a convicted murderer who has turned her life around? In this episode, Ray Notgrass discusses a real-life case when a state governor tried to apply that verse in one of the most difficult situations of his administration. In his last month in office, January 2019, Governor Bill Haslam of Tennessee announced that Cyntoia Brown would be freed from prison on August 9, 2019, 15 years to the day from when she took a man's life. Haslam had several reasons for his decision. Fifteen years was by then a typical sentence for a juvenile in such a case. In addition, the circumstances in Cyntoia's life, the context of the crime, had been horrible. Most importantly, Cyntoia had come to faith in Christ. Governor Haslam decided that Cyntoia would do more for society out of prison than she would spending decades more in prison.Watch a video interview with Cyntoia Brown Long and explore more resources at Homeschool History: https://app.homeschoolhistory.com/search?q=EHP028

Cyntoia Brown was a troubled teen who got a raw hand in life. In fact, she was at a disadvantage before she was even born, due to her mother drinking heavily throughout her pregnancy. Eventually, Cyntoia found herself in the youth criminal justice system where she escaped and began to get pimped out by a real P.O.S that went by the name of Kutthroat. One night her already miserable existence took a turn for the worst when she met 43-year-old Johny Michael Allen. Allen was a youth minister who allegedly liked to diddle kids. When he met Cyntoia in the parking of a Sonic, he allegedly propositioned her for sex. What happened next is up for debate. What we know for sure is that at some point Cyntoia popped Allen in the dome, ending his diddling days for good. Cyntoia would be arrested, tried as an adult, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison at only 16. It would be almost a decade later when her story went viral thanks to the help of celebrities like Rhianna and Kim K. She would eventually be set free and, by all accounts, she has been killing it since then! But was the killing in self-defense? Or was it just the poor choice of a very troubled teen? And how much did Cyntoia's race affect the outcome of her trial? What about the fact that Allen was a respected Christian in the Nashville community?Join the Boyz this week as we take a look at Cyntoia Brown's life and her controversial case!!

Cyntoia's path to prison was a tragic story of a young girl heading down the wrong path. It was a game of survival that turned into a loss that landed Cyntoia behind bars without parole for 51 years. That is until God's hand reached down and made her a promise through her future husband that she would soon be released against all odds. As her case unexplainably re-opened, she found hope when all signs pointed to hopelessness. In 2019, Cyntoia Brown Long's story captured our collective interest. Fifteen years into a life sentence for killing a man when she was 16-years-old, advocates ranging from Kim Kardashian and Rihanna to lawmakers to the general population advocated for her release. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granted Cyntoia clemency calling her situation a "tragic and complex case" involving sex trafficking and mandatory sentencing laws. Cyntoia joins Patrick in the Leadership Lab to discuss what she has learned about leading herself, investing in others, and working to make a difference in the world. Don't miss this powerful and informative conversation.

This survivor story episode covers manipulation, grooming, societal pressures, and broken expectations. Cyntoia Brown is a name you may have heard in 2019 when social media hashtag #freecyntoiabrown was shared by Kerry Washington and Kim Kardashian while Cyntoia served a life sentence for killing a man who had purchased her for sex when she was 16. Cyntoia has been on 20/20, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Today Show, her story has been featured in a Netflix documentary, and she even wrote an autobiography. You can learn all of the details about her case and trial with a Google search. Cyntoia will share about • Her transition out of prison • How trafficking became a part of her story • How she didn't identify as a trafficking victim at first • How she came to realize she was trafficked while in prison. There are so many parts of her teenage experience that are incredibly important when we seek to understand how youth vulnerability plays a huge role in trafficking and how to work to prevent it. As always, we want to hear from survivors about hope and what's next for them. Since 2019, Cyntoia has gotten married, has started the JFAM Foundation, which has spurred The G.L.I.T.T.E.R. Project and The Y.E.S. Council, both of which you'll hear more about in this episode. We were blown away by Cyntoia's strong faith in God, despite all the difficult parts of her personal history, and the ways in which her completely unique experience has so many parallels to those of the youth Marissa works with daily.
Cyntoia Brown had a tough life from day one. She's the key player in Kerri's story that's all about rape, robbery and murder. And the worst part is that it all happened when she was still a minor. Donna's story starts at 53:44, she tells us about the Hanover Haunting. Deanna Simpson found her dream home in Hanover, just outside Gettysburg. But it soon transpires that everything is not as amazing as Deanna first thought. When you think college football, you probably think Alabama. It's their claim to fame. If you're old enough, you might remember when Minnesota had a claim to fame in the sports world. You might also remember when Cyntoia was convicted, eventually leading to some very heated discussions considering the circumstances. At the age of 16, she was arrested for killing a man who had picked her up for sex, after she had been forced into sexual slavery as a child. She was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder for shooting the man who bought her for sex when she feared for her life. Today Cyntoia Brown-Long joins us to share her experience, what has happened in the 15 years she was incarcerated, and how she won her release. In an incredible development, after a years-long campaign to win her freedom, Cyntoia was granted clemency in January after former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam commuted her sentence. She was released from prison in August. We spend the hour discussing her experience as she recounts in her memoir, published this week, “Free Cyntoia: My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System.” The post Sentenced to Life in Prison as a Teen, How Cyntoia Brown Survived Sex Trafficking & Won Her Freedom appeared first on KPFA.
This week on we go over the complete case of Cyntoia Brown, a woman convicted of the murder and robbery of Johnny Michael Allen. Brown said that Allen had paid her $150 to have sex with him, and that she feared for her life during their encounter, leading her to shoot him. We also cover the eerily similar case of Chrystul Kizer 17, of Milwaukee charged in connection with the death of a Kenosha man whose body was found in his burning home, but there is a lot more to the story than meets the eye.
