Today on CRU, Nancy Grace and Sheryl McCollum dive deep into the shocking murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was killed while attending a conference in New York City. They discuss the latest details of the case, including the unique choice of weapon—a whale rod with a silencer, the killer's odd behavior, and the engraved shell casings with the words 'deny,' 'defend,' and 'depose.' Nancy and Sheryl also discuss potential motives tied to the insurance industry and the suspect's methodical, yet flawed, execution of the crime. Show Notes: (0:00) Welcome! In July 2008, a seemingly ordinary Greyhound bus ride through the Canadian prairies turned into a nightmare that would shock the world. Tim McLean, a young man returning home after a long day's work, became the tragic victim of a brutal and senseless attack by fellow passenger Vince Li. What followed was a chilling standoff that left authorities and onlookers questioning how such a horrific event could happen. In this episode of Crime at Bedtime, we dive deep into the mind of Vince Li—a man plagued by severe schizophrenia—and the terrifying events that unfolded on that fateful bus ride. We explore the mental health struggles that led to the crime, the police response, and the lasting impact of a case that raised haunting questions about justice, mental illness, and public safety. Tune in as we unravel the story of The Greyhound Bus Horror—a journey into madness. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Für unser Sommerspezial 2024 sind wir für Euch tief ins Archiv gestiegen und haben die besten Folgen der letzten Zeit zu einem Kessel Buntes gerührt. Oldies but Goldies.

This week, Drewby and Yergy pay a visit to our neighbors to the north to discuss the case of Timothy McLean, a young man who enjoyed a nomadic lifestyle as a carnival worker. While aboard Greyhound Bus 1170, Timothy was attacked and killed by Vince Li, an undiagnosed and untreated schizophrenic. But what Vince did to Timothy's body in the aftermath of the attack caused onlookers, first responders, and Timothy's family unmeasurable trauma... and caused one RCMP officer to later take his own life. Episode 39 opens with Marty Gold telling his personal stories of 3 people who have recently passed away- Maggie Roulette of Amaranth, Dr. Monte Kowall, and former newsman and voice of Assiniboia Downs, Jim Farrell. 15:30 Part 2- Guest Kelly Ryback has his own Jim Farrell story to tell before we pick up on his previous interview on Episode 37. 18.30 Ryback tells about the impact of bike lanes on parents and working families needing to use a car, but worse, how they also interfere with emergency vehicles. He says it's an example of "an ideology that doesn't work". Ryback springs the news that yet ANOTHER fire station- in the core area!- would be handcuffed by a marginal pet project of the bike lobby. More proof there's no consultation with EMS or hospital officials and "no consideration about the businesses in place, again eliminating parking. The idea everybody's going to take the bus or take their bike, it's not going to happen." A listener reminded us of one of the first bike lane inventions in 2010, in Lord Roberts, so stupidly planned the South Osborne Residents Group and the fire department forced the city to change it. Are one-sided plans being approved because councilors fear displeasing the small army of bike acolytes? Their own voters feel shunned. 26.10- CBC had the nerve to claim a report enthusiastically endorsing safe injection sites and "safe supply" was independent. You'll hear the proof that was a lie. Ryback, who's a supporter of the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre, says politicians make big promises but cannot get a grip on hunger, addictions, and poverty. Despite the rah-rah in the report, he explains how safe injection sites have been closed because of the disorder and crime the locations can attract. The discussion turns to the need for rehab on one side, and effective crackdowns on criminal dealers and distributors. Although the NDP government says "safe supply" isn't on the table, the enabler faction in health care isn't going to take no for an answer - despite the failure in BC where ODs and crime have skyrocketed. We tell of a BC MLA that the RCMP tried to stifle, after she figured out that half of drug seizures were free drugs the government gave out- some with forged subscriptions. Then there's vending machines. Coming to Winnipeg? * Comments/ news tips/ Interac donations- Email martygoldlive@gmail.com 42:00 Part 3 - More about the quality of life in your community. Ryback insists all revenue from government pot should be going to treatment. Bottom-priced hard drugs created a flood of addicts with hazardous behavior that threatens cops, first responders, and innocent neighbours. He believes bail conditions and drug sentences are far too lenient but reducing addictions and crime won't go down without enforcement. 48.30- The Jets owners are looking into transitional housing plans for downtown. Should it go near a safe injection site? How about the Market Lands across from City Hall? The discontinuance of Greyhound Bus services, CFT cutting kids loose when they turned 18, have placed vulnerable people in peril. Ryback goes through the city poverty rates- and children are double the national average. Aboriginal and First Nations communities needed special attention- But former Mayor Brian Bowman didn't want to hear of it. 1:02:52 BONUS AUDIO- In Ryback's previous interview, he said the attitude problem of some councilors towards delegations presenting briefs contradicting their views was poisoning civic engagement. One of our listeners relayed that they had similar bad treatment from Councilor Rollins but was doing something about it- and had filed a formal complaint with the Integrity Commissioner. In this overtime segment, Ryback responds to hearing the news about the ruling being sought: Are delegations allowed to publicly inform councilors of proven methods to supervise contracts and monitor spending? Or, can they be silenced by councilors wielding their political sword?
When the odds seemed stacked against him, John Rock Wehner emerged from Carrick with little more than a Greyhound Bus pass and the support of his grandmother, stepping into the limelight of professional baseball with stories that resonate with the heart of Americana. His voyage is a testament to the power of perseverance, and we're thrilled to share his candid recollections with you. From the culture shock of an empty college dormitory to the pressures of a major league debut, John peels back the curtain on the transformative moments that define a ballplayer's journey.Navigating potholed fields and overhanging fences, the city athlete's ingenuity takes center stage as Rock reminisces about the rough charm of urban baseball. His tales of homemade field maintenance and unconventional gameplay underscore the resilience and mental toughness needed beyond natural talent. In this episode, we get an intimate view of how pivotal a player's intelligence and adaptability are when facing adversity, and why these attributes often carry more weight than the stats on a player card. Finally, we celebrate the strategic ballet of baseball with a nod to its unsung heroes—the mentors who guide players like John through the nuances of the game. We reflect on the evolution of coaching, the nuances of outsmarting defensive shifts, and the significance of tactical decision-making. It's a journey through 13 professional seasons, culminating in a profound love for the game that shines in every anecdote, from the thrill of rookie excitement to the pride of a major league at-bat. Join us for an episode that captures the essence of baseball and the undying passion that fuels those who play it.CHAPTERS0:08Journey From Carrick to Indiana7:25Urban Baseball Field Stories18:05The Importance of Mental Toughness22:30The Lost Art of Baseball Strategy33:55John Wainer's Baseball JourneyTHANK YOU FOR LISTENING!!!!www.holdmycutter.com

Dr. Oumar Ba of Cornell University visits the Hayseed Scholar podcast. Dr. Ba grew up in Senegal, attending his first school at an early age near the Senegal-Mauritania border. He developed an interest in politics in high school and at his first university (Cheik Anna Diop in Dakar) where he pursued Geography. Oumar moved to the United States in early 2001, taking a Greyhound Bus from New York to Ohio. Following a series of jobs, including one at an auto manufacturing plant, he would return to academia pursuing a Master's in International Affairs and Political Science at Ohio University. It was there he worked on his thesis, exploring topics in International Law under the guidance of Professor Andrew Ross. He then went to Gainesville to pursue his PhD, and where he met friend of the pod Professor Aida Hozic. Dr. Ba reflects on his time at Morehouse College, an HBCU where he worked in his first tenure track job, and the interview (during the pandemic) and then recent move to Cornell. He reflects upon his experience of his book being the subject of the 2019 ISA-Northeast circle, discusses his approach to writing ('chaos'), and what he does to recharge and unwind. Dr. Ba and Brent conclude with a discussion on the World Cup.

Episode 115 Joan Webster25 year-old Joan Webster was a second year architecture student at Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1981 and had a bright future ahead of her. But on November 28th of that year, Joan vanished. She had just arrived at Logan Airport in Boston after flying home from NJ to see her family for the Thanksgiving holiday. As a cab driver helped began to load her suitcase into his taxi, an unkown man stopped Joan and told her that they shouldn't take that taxi. Joan told the cabbie that she was with the man, and picked up the suitcase and walked away with the man to a nearby car parked in the taxi row. The bewildered cab driver dismissed the incident, and looked for his next fare. Joan Webster was never seen alive again. When her boyfriend, a fellow student at Harvard realized Joan hadn't come back to school following the holiday, he called her parents. That's when they realized Joan was missing, and reported her as such on December 2, 1981. That same day, Joan's red purse and her wallet - with about $100 in cash missing - were found, 14 miles north of Logan Airport. A man found them in a marsh - a known dumping ground for criminal elements - in Saugus, MA. Her tote bag, which she carried her credit cards and checkbooks in, as well as her suitcase were still missing. On January 29th, 1982 Joan's suitcase was found in a Greyhound Bus terminal. Extensive searches of the areas around the airport turned up no signs of Joan herself. Over the years, Joan's parents where called multiple times by people demanding money for information they supposedly had about Joan. One caller urged the authorities to look into another murder and named a suspect in the murder, but it failed to lead to Joan. Finally, in 1990, almost a decade after she vanished, Joan's remains were found along a creek area off Chabacco rd in Hamilton, Massachusetts, almost 30 miles north of Logan Airport where Joan was last seen. She was found nude; the victim of a homicide with evidence of head trauma. Due to the passage of time, and exposure to the elements, not much was apparently found in the way of physical evidence, and the case remains unsolved. The best clue in the case is the mystery man seen by the cab driver with Joan at Logan Airport. He never came forward, and was not identified. If you have information about Joan's case, please call the Hamilton, MA police at 978-468-1212Joan's sister-in-law Eve Carson, who has written 2 books on Joan's case joins me in this episode to discuss the mystery of what happened to Joan.
