In this episode of the Talking Transformation Podcast we change our geography considerably, from a South African context, to the Arabinan Peninsula and Persian Gulf region. Our guest is Mahmood Al-Wahaibi an urban planner, ethnographer and academic who heads up OTU: the Oman Think Urban. The OTU is a Think Tank that blends urban ethnography and planning methodologies to support community engagement and research impacting on a number of the major planning initiatives in Oman. It comes at a time when Oman is looking to transition its economy away from a heavy emphasis on oil and commodities to a more diverse economy where tourism and emphasis on service sector industries are championing that transition. Based out of Muscat, the Capital City of Oman, Mahmood and I met in person a year ago when we both supported the Greater Muscat Structure Plan (GMSP). The GMSP is a fascinating case study in addressing a sprawling, low-density capital city that is bracing for significant changes in its spatial, economic, social and environmental character. It doesn't seek to address the transition and growth in the manner and style of Dubai or Dohar. Muscat's is arguably a more humble approach, that seeks to balance, on the one hand, the preservation and celebration of the heritage of an ancient city with the ambitions, on the other hand, to meet the demands of a modern and competitive economy and metropolitan city. The implications for mobility modes, migration patterns and existential issues of environmental and sustainability issues have been key considerations in the GMSP. Mahmood was the consummate host in a country and region I knew nothing about. I was curious about the region, the history, the opportunities and the transitions that were driving change in his home town and country. Many of the challenges we face here in South Africa are echoed in the GMSP but these are being tackled in a different way and with very different expectations and resourcing for infrastructure and partnerships. I hope you'll enjoy the conversation and reflections from the episode. William Harries Graham released his latest EP Plainfield Tapes this past summer, the follow-up to the beautiful St. Claire LP that came out at the start of 2021. Like his 2016 debut Foreign Fields, they show the Austin-based artist pushing beyond Americana into a more fluid, ethereal and intimate atmosphere, a mystique within hushed […]

‘Productivity’ is a term that gets tossed around a lot: you should be more productive at work; the nation needs to be more productive in general... But what does it actually mean? There are only so many hours in the day - are there really life hacks that can help us make better use of the limited time we have to boost our output in the workplace AND lead happier lives? One man who knows is Chris Bailey - in a series of experiments upon himself, he spent a year trying out productivity techniques such as goal-setting, meditation and early rising, and measured the actual outcomes to devise a system for managing his life. In this interview with Olly, he reveals his top productivity tips, dismisses the industry of ‘productivity porn’, and speaks up for the positive role of caffeine. Elsewhere, Ollie Peart fills The Zeitgeist with news of the new metrosexual: the spornosexual; predicts the welcome demise of shared plates; and celebrates the trend for non-confrontational reality TV. Meanwhile, in The Foxhole, Alix Fox has bad news for frequenters of notorious London sex-sauna Rio’s, and some tips for a listener whose wife wants to watch porn with him. A band Maz adores, Foreign Fields stopped by to take him through the gap between their debut and second record, live plans and introduce a track they love.
The Memory Palace is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX. Music * Up top, looped, is the first bit of the great, Foreign Fields, by Kacy Hill. * Then we hear some of Sun Will Set, by Zoe Keating. * The song on the radio is Sonny Thompson’s Long Gone, as heard on the Mellow Blues album. Notes * You can read all of the 1948 Green Book (and the rest of the Green Books) at the New York Public Library’s fantastic digital collection.
It was Joe Jordan's goal - a diving header against Czechoslovakia in 1973 - which helped Scotland qualify for their first World Cup finals in 16 years. That he went on to score in three World Cup finals - West Germany 74, Argentina in 1978 and Spain four years later - is yet another indicator of his elite talent. It seems hard to believe these days that Scotland had a team of such pedigree in the 70s that they travelled to World Cup finals with expectations rather than just hope. In part two of this interview, Joe reflects on Scotland's World Cup campaign in 74, when they went unbeaten but missed out on goal difference and returned home on the first plane. He talks passionately about his immersion in Italian football, first with AC Milan - where he became a cult hero and caught the start of Franco Baresi's career - and then with a spell in Verona. There's insight into his relationship with Harry Redknapp, who he assisted at Portsmouth, Spurs and Queens Park Rangers, and his thoughts on working with...
