Send us a textGet Ready To Groove: Why Brass Camel Is The Band You Need To Know About Right Now!#newmusic #progrock #progfunk #camel #newalbum After successfully criss-crossing Canada three times on the strength of a word-of-mouth reputation and a hard-earned live following, Vancouver-based Brass Camel return with their second full-length record: Camel. Clocking in at 40 minutes across just six tracks, the album is an unapologetic artistic statement from a band whose sound resists easy classification—equal parts progressive rock ambition and deep-pocket groove, with no shortage of swagger, surprises, and soul.Their self-styled “prog-funk” sound may raise eyebrows on paper, but as multiple Grammy-winner Fantastic Negrito put it: “They sound like a funky Rush.” Or, as Big Sugar frontman Gordie Johnson (who also guests on the record as the group's Zappa-tinged “cat whisperer”) once declared, “Brass Camel…man, they're good worldwide.”Following their 2022 debut Brass, the band doubled down—both on the road and in the studio. Camel is the result of that momentum: two 11-minute bookends, four shapeshifting shorter tracks, and zero interest in playing it safe.Website: https://www.brasscamel.ca/epkInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/brasscamelFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/brassycamelApplemusic: https://music.apple.com/ca/artist/brass-camel/1629161926Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/59HNn8uI1RIbWzmPUy5pFm?si=54e041a98f934c34&nd=1&dlsi=aa86680918574875Bandcamp: https://brasscamelband.bandcamp.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@UCx1fnIXz40ZxIBAWmmjXtjg TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCx1fnIXz40ZxIBAWmmjXtjg Thanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

The team behind the Soundcheck podcast series offers their favorite live performances from the WNYC studios this year: including Mexico City-based cellist, producer, and singer Mabe Fratti and her trio; Brazilian composer Amaro Freitas playing the piano's insides; and the soulful mambo of Cuba big band Orquesta Akokán. Plus, Norwegian punk cabaret sextet Kaizers Orchestra, Georgia singer and musician Lizz Wright, and Brooklyn-based Zelenaya with their Eastern European folk songs set to heavy metal (cough...nepotism on that last band...cough.) Also, fiery roots music for everyone by American singer-songwriter Fantastic Negrito, multi-instrumentalist Shabaka's flute-based meditative spiritual jazz, and the saucy multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser of Joan As Police Woman at the piano. The story of Fantastic Negrito is one of those stranger-than-fiction tales – born Xavier Dphrepaulezz and raised in a strict Muslim home, he had an aborted career as an R&B star under the name Xavier, a near-fatal car accident, a seven year break from music, and then came roaring back with what he called “Black roots music for Everyone.” As Fantastic Negrito, he won the first NPR Tiny Desk Concert and then three Grammys for his stomping, blues-rockin' albums. But the story has taken another unexpected twist, and that has led to Fantastic Negrito's new album, Son Of A Broken Man. During the quarantine part of the pandemic, Fantastic Negrito dug into his family's past on one of the ancestry sites. He'd found that he was the son of a “yarn-spinning” father who claimed roots in East Africa, but whose lineage actually went back several generations to a tobacco plantation in Virginia. Between the large number of siblings and the “punk rock story” of mixed marriage in his family, he uncovered a lot of inconsistencies with the stories of the past, and a whole lot of loving. Fantastic Negrito “hides behind the flashy jacket” and turns his trauma into art, playing some of his blues-stomp-and-roll music for everyone, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Devil In My Pocket 2. Crooked Road 3. I Hope Somebody's Loving You 4. Son of a Broken Man

ZZ Ward began singing at the age of 8, inspired by her father's extensive blues collection. By 12, she was already performing blues music, and it helped steer every aspect of her early career, from her musical sound to her signature Fedora. But as a professional female musician, she often felt pressured to compromise her blues roots to meet industry demands. She quickly became a buzzed-about artist, earning a major label deal and breaking into Billboard's Top 40 with her debut release. Her sophomore album hit #1 on the Billboard Blues chart, highlighted by singles featuring GRAMMY-Award winners Fantastic Negrito and Gary Clark Jr. We talk about her new album, life as a mom, touring with Slash and so much more.
Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, known as Fantastic Negrito, is an American singer-songwriter originally from Massachusetts. A self-taught musician, he was first signed in 1993 and has released seven albums since, earning three consecutive Grammy Awards as well as NPR's first ever Tiny Desk Contest. Between records, he was in a near-fatal car crash, temporarily retired from music, set up an illegal nightclub in Los Angeles, and started his family. Fantastic Negrito now calls Houston, Texas home.

GUEST OVERVIEW: Indie Rock, Alt Country, singer songwriter Brad Byrd already hit the ground running in '24 with a return to SXSW as an official artist for the second year in a row. Byrd's forthcoming single "Cold World" released on March 7th, and is garnering a buzz in the music community. It is poised to join the over 50+ tracks off Byrd's catalog to be featured on film & tv to date. The songwriter and painter has logged many touring miles in his van in recent years, sharing the stage with the likes of Pete Yorn, Fantastic Negrito, Jesse Daniel, Jay Farrar (of Son Volt), and Paul McDonald to name a few. Along with consistent new releases and national touring; the songs off Byrd's extensive catalog have been receiving significant radio play, specifically on Nic Harcourt's morning show on KCSN in Los Angeles and on WXPN in Philly.
Self-described “lifelong hustler,” Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, is better known by his stage name Fantastic Negrito, and makes “black roots music for everyone” - blues with a giant undercurrent of punkass. Fantastic Negrito's songs tell of a hard life with some complete do-overs and a few near-death experiences. Coming from a crossroads with optional deals, his music might be informed just as much by California funk-punk (Bad Brains and Fishbone), hip hop, thrash metal, punk, Prince and his self-taught ways - specifically Dirty Mind (according to this Guardian interview) and the blues records he'd heard as a kid, visiting family in southern Virginia. Lately, his tunes have been placed and licensed for TV and film series (Empire, Hand of God, and in the case of his song “Working Poor,” Bernie Sanders' political campaign.) But back in the early 2000's he had co-founded a record label, which grew into Oakland-based multimedia creative collective, the Blackball Universe cooperative, fed and financed with the publishing royalties of his own musical alter egos Chocolate Butterfly, Me and This Japanese Guy and Blood Sugar X. Fantastic Negrito's 2018 record, Please Don't Be Dead, references his own near-fatal car crash, and is driven in part by political and social issues in these broken and fractured times. The record is full of heavy riffs, cheeky songwriting, playful musicianship, and a whole lot of surviving. It brings Fantastic Negrito to the studio to play some of these tunes. -by Caryn Havlik Watch the individual songs below:

During some downtime in Atlanta Fantastic Negrito was doing a little genealogical digging when he started to follow a trail to his seventh generation grandparents. It turns out that in Virginia in the 1750s his grandparents, a White Scottish indentured female servant and an enslaved African man fell in love and started a family. This discovery prompted an outpouring of creativity from Fantastic Negrito. Negrito released an album based on this relationship in 2022 called "White Jesus Black Problems". Currently Negrito is out on the road screening the film. He'll be at the Dakota on Wednesday October 25 for a screening, q & a, and an acoustic performance.
Today, we meet the man who reports on the athletes at San Quentin prison who play everything from basketball to pickleball. Then, Fantastic Negrito's drummer James “Sticknasty” Small talks about his debut solo album. And, we'll hear why a seminal Jewish text got an updated translation.
In this Roots Radio episode, co-hosts Lisa Bonta Sumii and Richie Nuñez feature singer/songwriter, Fantastic Negrito.Fantastic Negrito takes you on a journey, portraying a narrative of triumph over adversity. His journey is a representation of a musician from Oakland who experienced the zenith of securing a million-dollar record contract, plummeted into the abyss after a life-threatening car accident that resulted in a coma, and is now witnessing a resurgence that has brought him from the alleys of Oakland to international fame. This man's life story is as compelling as his music because his experiences shape his sound. The music, inspired by a life full of trials, is an expression of black roots music, woven with elements of slide guitar, drums, and piano. The tunes convey an atmosphere of urgency, desperation, and tension.Negrito earned nationwide recognition when he clinched the first NPR Tiny Desk contest in 2015. He followed up this success with Grammy wins for all three of his albums: The Last Days of Oakland (2017), Please Don't Be Dead (2019), and Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? (2021). The most recent album includes collaborations with fellow Tiny Desk winner Tank (Tank and the Bangas) and the Bay Area icon E-40.Negrito's journey has been full of exciting turns in recent years. His independent record label, Storefront Records in West Oakland, launched his two newest projects. White Jesus Black Problems (2022) and Grandfather Courage (2023) explore the forbidden love story of his ancestors — a white Scottish indentured servant and an enslaved African man on a Virginia tobacco plantation in the 1750s. White Jesus Black Problems is accompanied by a 42-minute video available for viewing on YouTube.Additionally, Negrito has initiated The Storefront Market, an outdoor community market located at Storefront Records. The tenth iteration of this market recently partnered with Thrive City at The Chase Center, home to The Golden State Warriors in San Francisco. This partnership offered a platform for various Bay Area artists and vendors to showcase their work in the city.Lisa Bonta Sumii, LCSW, CSW | Athlete Mindset podcast host:Lisa is a psychotherapist and mental performance consultant to high-performing athletes at the youth, collegiate, Olympic-hopeful, and professional levels. Raised in musical family, Giulio Xavier Cetto's musical influences range from his Venezuelan-Italian heritage to Bay Area rap. Giulio can play multiple styles and genres with ease, but at the intersection of jazz and hip hop is where his artistry truly shines. He brings an electric energy to his performances, encouraging audiences to not only vibe, but to get up and dance. Playing tribute to these genres, Giulio hosts and performs at a reoccurring "Sunday Slaps" night at San Francisco's beloved jazz venue, Black Cat. He also curates a weekly jazz set at Golden Gate Park's Stowe Lake Boathouse. Between gigging and recording with notable musicians including Kev Choice, Spelling, Kassa Overall, and Fantastic Negrito, he leads and composes original music for his own jazz band, Big Trippin. On their debut album, which drops this year, you can hear Giulio's passion for jazz and hip hop. On Rightnowish, Giulio talks about his favorite San Francisco venues to perform in, how the synthesis between jazz and hip-hop shape his sound and why the bass (upright and electric) is the heart of music.
“Grandfather Courage” Fantastic Negrito may have been born in Massachusetts, but he's a Bay Area guy through and through. The 8th of 15 kids, he moved to Oakland as a twelve year old and immediately immersed himself in the sounds of the 510 and the 415. He was no stranger to punk rock clubs like Berkeley's Gillman or the underground hip hop clubs of Oakland. He liked it all—metal, indie rock, soul, punk and jazz and the legend goes that he learned to play by sneaking into the music classrooms at Cal, even though he wasn't a student. Using his birth name of Xavier, in 1993 he signed a deal with Prince's former Manager's Lexington House Records who had a distribution deal with Interscope. Three years later he put out his debut album, simply titled Xavier. A horrifying car crash in 1999 nearly killed him but after waking up from a three week coma, he started to see his career in a totally different way. That new angle wouldn't take hold until 2014, seven years after a self-imposed exile of not making music anymore. He emerged in his 40s as Fantastic Negrito, a personae that made what he called Black roots music for everyone. And, it turns out, everyone was into it. Fantastic Negrito pulled off an improbable hat trick, winning the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2016 for The Last Days Of Oakland, repeating that feat for 2019's Please Don't Be Dead and doing it again for 2020's Have You Lost Your Mind? His new album Grandfather Courage is the acoustic reimagining of his 2022 album White Jesus Black Problems and it's nothing short of brilliant. It's indie rock soul, it's low-fi blues, it's big, it's grand, it's ambitious and it's one of the richer musical experiences you'll have all year. www.fantasticnegrito.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

When asked about his musical style, Fantastic Negrito says, "...I think it's the great thing about being a middle-aged guy doing this just from the streets. I don't need to follow those rules. I feel like it's the sound of America." Edited by: Matt Blake Stay up-to-date with Fantastic Negrito via the links below. An out-of-the-blue email claiming to be from a relative inspired funky blues artist Fantastic Negrito's acclaimed album White Jesus Black Problems. It saw him follow his family tree back seven generations to Elizabeth Gallimore, an indentured servant from Scotland, who was charged in Virginia, 1759 with unlawfully cohabitating with a Negro slave. Also known for his work as activist and urban farmer, Xavier Dphrepaulezz grew up in an orthodox Muslim household in Oakland. A near-fatal car accident in the 1990s derailed his pop music career but he reinvented himself as Fantastic Negrito, going on to win the first NPR Tiny Desk Contest in 2015 and a Grammy for Contemporary Blues Album in 2017. Fantastic Negrito performs at WOMAD in New Plymouth Sunday 19 March.
Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! In commemoration of nonviolent protest, overcoming societal struggles, community engagement, and voicing our dreams, today we’re putting the focus on Fantastic Negrito. Born just 74 days before Dr. King’s assassination, Xavier Dphrepaulezz spent his teens witnessing Black oppression firsthand while selling drugs and toting guns in Oakland at the […]

The January 6 committee's final televised session is today. It's also expected to make a criminal referral of former President Donald Trump to the Justice Department. Fentanyl overdose is now the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18-49, and the federal government failed to see it coming. That's according to a big investigative series by the Washington Post. When musician Fantastic Negrito researched his family history during the pandemic, he discovered a 300-year-old interracial love story and siblings he didn't know about.

There's a lot of buzz around town about the inaugural September 15-17 Annapolis Songwriters Festival. And with anything inaugural, it's hard to know what to expect. That is where we come in! We sat down with Kris and Laura from Rams Head Presents (a sister to all the other Rams Head businesses) to find out. And in a word... OMG!! There is a lot to digest, but it is three days long, encompasses venues from Westgate Circle to City Dock, has more than 70 (yes 70) free performances, has several paid performances, and will be an incredible time for music lovers! Rams Head has the experience as they have done the world-famous Key West Songwriters Festival for years, and Annapolis really made a lot of sense. And while there are internationally known songwriters coming to town, they did not forget the wealth of talent right here and you can hear from local scribes like Skribe (see what I did there), Jimi Haha, Brandon Hardesty, Ruben Dobbs, and more. Some of the national names you know will include Amos Lee, Jake Owen, Lucinda Williams, Fantastic Negrito, Josh Ritter, James McMurtry, Madison Cunningham, and Robert Randolph! Robert Randolph is kicking off the festival with a free event at MC3 on September 15th at 5:00 pm, along with Dean Rosenthal, Skribe, Jimi Haha, and Honest Lee Soul! You will be hard-pressed to find a downtown Annapolis venue without live music over these three days--and even on the water with a concert on the Harbor Queen and Songwriters on the Severn! So much going on. Have a listen! LINKS: Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Website - Tickets) Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Facebook) Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Instagram)
When musician Fantastic Negrito researched his family history during the pandemic, he discovered a 300-year-old interracial love story and siblings he didn't know about. Some six months into the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the two sides are fighting close to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Nearby residents have fled over fears of a Chernobyl-like disaster. North Carolina voters passed constitutional amendments in 2018 that aimed to make voting tougher. Lawmakers who put them on the ballot may have been elected illegally. Eight fraternities at USC have disaffiliated with the university this month over new rules that were supposed to address allegations of sexual assault at parties. Artist Michael Heizer, who created “Levitated Mass” outside LACMA, has finished “City,” which is more than a mile long in the Nevada desert. Few people will be able to check it out.
In 2020, while looking back through his family tree, Grammy-winning musician Fantastic Negrito learned that his seventh-generation grandparents had been a white indentured servant from Scotland and an unnamed enslaved man, living in a common law marriage in 18th-century Virginia. The discovery inspired Fantastic Negrito to write an album about their union, titled White Jesus Black Problems. Fantastic Negrito joins us for a Listening Party. Fantastic Negrito will perform at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! this Saturday.
Fantastic Negrito talks about his new album, 'White Jesus Black Problems,' which was inspired by his discovery that his 7th generation grandparents were an interracial couple, a white indentured servant and an enslaved Black man, who put their lives in danger and challenged white supremacy in the name of love. Fantastic Negrito is one of the most original and successful performers to emerge from the Bay Area over the last decade. A musician, a storyteller and a carrier of our region's Black musical traditions, he began performing on the streets of Oakland. Now he's won 3 Grammys and he's got a new album coming out today. Alexis, Mina Kim and some lucky KQED Live fans, got to hear a preview of that album a few months back, and we're excited to finally be able to share Fantastic Negrito's electric performance with you.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." - MLK (1963) This week, we reject our flawed, siloed thinking and embrace the oneness of social justice and environmentalism as a singular, inclusive movement. In the Summer of 2020, our guest, Leah Thomas, coined the term “Intersectional Environmentalism” with a graphic she shared to Instagram that read, “Environmentalists For Black Lives Matter” as a call out to all environmentalists to stand in solidarity with BIPOC communities that face compounding social and environmental injustices daily. The Instagram post went viral, and the pledge she introduced along with it, The IE Pledge, has reached over a million people. And so now that it's 2022 and counting, how can we continue to root ourselves in that moment of clarity in 2020 and hold to the truth that you don't have to separate race or racial justice from environmental advocacy? How can we scale climate solutions while advocating for marginalized communities all the while not making excuses for extractive industries? We're also joined this week by special co-host Abigael Kima, a young energy expert and climate activist from Kenya .She is the producer and host of the new Hali-Hewa (Swahili for ‘Climate Change') podcast, which will profile African activists and climate experts airing through to COP27 on themes including a just energy transition, loss and damage, youth participation in intergovernmental processes and indigenous rights.
