In this interview, Jessica Knowles discusses her current research into the apocalyptic stained-glass window in St Martha's pilgrim hospice church in Nuremberg, comparing it to apocalyptic windows in All Saints, North Street in York, northern England.Jessica is considering St Martha's window in its fullest context of the late-fourteenth century.  Therefore, this includes not only the images and the surviving text surrounding the images, but also the story these images and texts told, and how this story fitted with the stories told by adjacent windows in St Martha's.  In addition, she considers the people who saw the window and the ways in which they would have seen and experienced it, also the people who paid for the window and how they benefited from this donation and memorial.  Jessica concludes that, although today we see the apocalyptic images and windows as perhaps negative as the physical world burns and is destroyed, late medieval people would probably have seen them as positive, hopeful and an image of the salvation of their souls. This podcast is part of a series of interviews covering central Europe in the medieval period for MECERN and CEU Medieval Studies.

Episode 158 - Freedom's Path, The Story of Salem Chapel and the Underground RailroadDo you have a significant historical landmark in your community - have you spent time there? Well I did. I spent time at the last stop of the Underground Railroad, where black slaves seeking freedom found community, safety and the true freedom they desired. I had the honour to sit in this small chapel and to let the walls and the wood pews tell me about the history of this lighthouse of freedom.WELCOME TO THE SALEM CHAPEL SANCTUARY OF HISTORYPeople of African descent began settling in the St. Catharines, Ontario area around 1788 and they brought their religion with them. Many were followers of Rev. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Wesley was a staunch abolitionist and advocated for the end of slavery and the slave trade. Many of the freedom seekers that relocated to this area were also followers of Bishop Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC).An AMEC Society was established in St. Catharines, Ontario between 1814 and 1820. A small chapel was built to serve the faithful in the Queenston Street area. When construction on the first Welland Canal began (1824-1829) in their neighbourhood, members of the Black community relocated to the under developed area of Geneva and North Streets. In 1835, they purchased property on North Street from abolitionist businessmen William Hamilton Merritt and Oliver Phelps to build a new AMEC. This church would be the second in St. Catharines and it would hold about 70 members. In 1837, the St. Catharines group sent a petition to the AMEC New York Conference asking for pastoral care and to be received into the AMEC Connection. As a result of this action, AMEC missionaries stationed in Upper Canada were instructed to "regulate the existing Societies, organize more in other regions and also communicate that they shall be subject to the order of the Bishops, and amendable to the Annual Conference of the New York District." One year later, the New York AMEC Conference organized a church in St. Catharines with forty members and two local preachers. The church was named Bethel Chapel. In less than a generation this Methodist group would out grow the second church. The Black community inSt. Catharines began to increase immediately after the US Congress passed the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Thousands of free and escaped African Americans living in the Northern States moved to various parts of Canada West to secure their safety and freedom. The new fugitive slave laws also caused thousands of fleeing enslaved African Americans to settle in Canada. In order to accommodate the influx of new comers, the AMEC congregation in St. Catharines decided to build a larger church. Resident freedom seekers began to construct the third church in October 1853. On November 4, 1855 the new AMEC was opened and publicly "dedicated to the Service of Almighty God" by Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne. In less than one year (September 1856), most of the Canadian AME Churches would separate from the AMEC Conference in the US and establish the British Methodist Episcopal Church (BMEC). This was partly due to the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Most of the AME Church members in Canada refused to attend Conference in the US because of the fugitive slave laws. They also wanted to identify themselves more closely with the country that granted them their freedom and equal rights. As a Methodist meeting house, from its early beginnings the AMEC in St. Catharines hosted anti-slavery lectures, civic protests and provided shelter and aid to the newly arrived freedom seekers until the end of the Civil War. With no financial or family support, Williams received help from Jim Lindenmayer of the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program. Lindenmayer arranged for Williams to stay at a Canton motel and provided support for him to pass the General Education Development Test. This purchase, including parcels between North Street and the Cherokee County Justice Center, builds on a previous acquisition of a 2.4-acre law firm site in May 2023. The DDA has also engaged Goodwyn Mills Cawood for a $120,000 conceptual design and surveying project to explore mixed-use opportunities. City officials are working on a housing transition plan for current residents and integrating feedback from a recent downtown master plan. This redevelopment aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance downtown infrastructure and potentially include a new hotel and conference facility. STORY 5:   Canton Man Convicted of Possession of Sawed-Off Shotgun Matthew Miller, 35, was convicted on August 23 by a Cherokee County jury for possessing a sawed-off shotgun. North Street epitomises Belfast's disregard for its own backstory.

Today's Ola Kala Moment: Farm to Table for Dinner Resources: Next Wave Sommelier of the Year Little Saint Executive Wine Director Alex Sarovich For many, the allure of working in hospitality often stems from early childhood memories of happy family gatherings around the dinner table. For Alexandria (Alex) Sarovich, who has four siblings and a shared Italian/Serbian heritage—this was precisely where her love for all things food and wine began. This sense of cooking and nourishing her loved ones inspired Alex to enroll in Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, where she would receive a Bachelor's in Business and an Associate's degree in Culinary Arts. During her time at JWU, Alex discovered her interest in wine. In 2015 she accepted a Beverage Director position back home in Chicago at an E2 Hospitality property. She spent three years honing her craft and running an award-winning beverage program inside JW Marriott hotel's contemporary Italian restaurant. Alex left her first program to explore the wine world in Australia. Alex had the opportunity to work as a sommelier at the World's 50 Best restaurant Attica, where she expanded her knowledge of Australian wines under the tutelage of fellow Chicagoan and acclaimed Sommelier Jane Lopes. After tracking SingleThread Farm, Restaurant & Inn for almost three years, in early 2019, Alex landed her dream job as a Sommelier at SingleThread. During Alex's time as Sommelier at SingleThread she passed the Level 3 Advanced Sommelier Certification. In her current role as Executive Wine Director at Little Saint, she is building an accessible wine program where she leads a talented team dedicated to creating a unique gathering space to support the community and to elevating minority voices in the wine industry. It is said when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. For Jerrid Burdick, through successes, failures, lessons and finding his way to life/work balance, there have always been people who have entered into his life just at the right time. It's all in the timing, and the humility to be open to the next lesson. Growing up on a farm on Florida Mountain, it would have been hard to imagine that Jerrid would have made his mark selling tuxedos for celebrations throughout the Berkshires. But, then again, throughout his childhood he never knew himself that his mother and grandmother were master seamstresses - and his natural ability with the measuring tape was no coincidence. "It's in your blood, pay attention, " he later heard when he began working in a tuxedo shop in North Adams. In business, Jerrid showed innovation right from the start when he was a teen-ager creating a service that delivered tuxes (no brick and mortar required) and found a niche in various high schools during prom season. He also felt the sting of stepping into a hyper-competitive market with heavy hitters who would try to take him out of the game - landing infamously on the front page of the local newspaper. He also felt the devastation of bankruptcy, which he says was the result of not keeping his own ego in check. Another lesson learned. Still, even when he went back to work in a more traditional job to get back on his feet financially, he knew where his passion was and he would not be denied. In this episode we cover his full professional journey, landing in the Berkshire Mall with Tux Express, and quickly realizing he needed more room to grow. The gutsy move to North Street raised eyebrows, as he was suddenly situated just a few doors down the street from his top competitor. We also cover: a surprise phone call that led to a lasting mentorship and enduring friendship, the development of a web presence for what ultimately became the Berkshire Wedding Expo, family life, fatherhood, self-care, the economics of weddings, capturing the business of those traveling in to get married in the Berkshires, the evolution of wedding and prom menswear, spirituality, the massive impact of COVID on his business and the industry, and not dwelling on mistakes, but instead, learning quickly and moving forward. Judge Frank C. Mills III, a former chief Superior Court judge in Cherokee County, died Friday at the age of 74 at his home in Canton. Mills was first appointed as a Superior Court judge on Feb. 9, 1981, a position he would go on to hold for 30 years, getting elected eight times. Before that, he was the district attorney for the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit, which serves Cherokee County — he was appointed to that position by then-Gov. George Busbee in 1978. Even after he retired as chief judge in 2012, he continued to serve on the circuit as a senior judge until last year. Mills' son, Frank “Tater” Crouthers Mills, said his father is the “epitome of selfless service.” Mills' wife of over 40 years, Mandy Mills, added that her husband was “truly the kindest and best of men.” Here is one of Judge Mills' longtime friends Billy Hasty talking on their friendship. ***Audio CTL Billy Hasty*** Outside the courtroom, Mills was active in community affairs such as the Boy Scouts of America, serving as district chairman and was the recipient of the District Award of Merit in 1992 and the Silver Beaver Award in 1996, the highest award on nomination of a Boy Scout Council for distinguished service to youth. Mills was also presented the Whitney M. Young Award in 2005 for distinguished service to rural or low-income urban youth, was a volunteer Red Cross lifeguard, CPR, first aid and wilderness first aid instructor, and also received the Justice Robert Benham Public Service Award from the State Bar of Georgia. In 2013, the local chamber of commerce named him the First Citizen of Cherokee County. A former Cherokee High School art teacher is bringing an art studio to downtown Canton this summer. Shanna Coulter, who was an art teacher for seven years at Cherokee High School, is opening Local Color Studio, a 6,200 square-foot art studio that is expected to open in May. Coulter describes what Local Color Studio will be as a “creative co-working space” for Canton, similar to Made Mercantile in downtown Woodstock. The studio is located at the basement level of the former Audio Intersection building at 210 E. Main St. in downtown Canton. The entrance to the studio will be on North Street. The studio, designed with an open floor plan, will feature a ceramics studio, classroom space and private studio spaces for lease. Classes will include painting, drawing, ceramics, collage and mixed media. Coulter said she will teach several classes as well. Membership will work like a gym, with studio and equipment access and discounted classes and workshops, Coulter said. Walk-in guests will have access to the maker space, as well as the 2D and ceramic studios, artist workshops, classes and socials. It was forced to stave off a spirited late push, but the Walton girls basketball team defeated Cherokee 66-56 on Friday night at Wheeler to claim the Region 5AAAAAAA championship. The Warriors outscored the Raiders 33-32 during the second half, but Lexy Harris' 35 points were too much to overcome as Walton beat Cherokee for the first time this season and win its first region title since 1983. Cherokee had no answer for Harris, who dominated the paint on both sides of the floor. Behind her, Cici Childers finished with 15 points, while Graycen Ehlen and Kate Bagley each scored eight points. Toni Warren led the Warriors with 20 points, Hannah Harris scored 14 points and Elle Kenney added seven points. Friday's loss marked the end of Cherokee's six-year region championship run, along with its 13-game winning streak. For Walton, it finally broke through after dropping its first two games against the Warriors this season. The Cherokee County School District is a step closer to replacing Free Home Elementary with a new facility. Thursday, the school board unanimously selected Carroll Daniel Construction for a $36 million construction contract to build the new Free Home Elementary School. The project is funded by the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which voters renewed in 2021. As of October, Free Home Elementary has an enrollment of 311, one of the smallest schools in the district. The project has been brought on by the state's plans to widen Highway 20 — the campus, at 12525 Cumming Highway near Canton, is in the area slated to become new highway lanes. In 2021, the school board purchased land from the county for $1.6 million for the new school. The 40.7-acre site is near the current school, north of the intersection of Highway 20 and Highway 372. Free Home Elementary School has a long history in Cherokee County. While the current facility was built in the 1950s, the site has served as a school for over a century. Etowah wasn't going to let it happen again. Last season, in Class AAAAAAA, the Eagles reached the region title game before losing to Roswell. This year, the Eagles were given the chance to win a Region 6AAAAAA championship, they didn't let this one slip away. Etowah used its trademark defense and transition game to put away a stubborn River Ridge team 61-54 in the region title game Friday at Rome High School. The Eagles, now 19-8 on the year, claim the coveted No. 1 seed from the region heading into next week's state tournament. For the River Ridge Knights, a 20-7 record and a No. 2 seed in the state tournament are good accomplishments — but the coaching staff knows that to win games on the state level, the Knights will have to be more focused. Brandon Rechsteiner, a Virginia Tech signee, led a balanced Etowah attack with 17 points. Aiden Weaver scored 15, Etter added 11, and Angelakos chipped in 10. River Ridge was led by Jay McCord's 16 points, while Greyson Hopf scored 11 and Grayson Helms added 10. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews           -          -          -          -          -          -          The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. Register Here for your essential digital news.             This podcast was produced and published for the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger and TribuneLedgerNews.com by BG Ad Group     For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com/    https://cuofga.org/   https://www.drakerealty.com/   https://www.esogrepair.com/         See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The love of beer and the magic of the pub. Sarah Real and Mike Dell'Aquila have been together since their days at Penn State, and since, through their days in New York City, traveling around the world and now finding their ways to the Berkshires - they are now fulfilling their dream to open a brewery. Hot Plate Brewing Co. is expected to open on North Street this fall. Meanwhile, the couple is busy telling their story through community, creative social media content and, of course, developing exceptional brews. In our conversation we cover the early days and early inspiration in their days at Penn State, a cross country trip, speaking the language of beer internationally, the universal magic of the pub, making beer in a tiny New York apartment, the incredible origin story of the Hot Plate name, extract vs. all-grain brews, Sarah's Mexican American heritage and its importance in this industry today, their journey to the Berkshires, falling in love with North Street, the business model for Hot Plate, documenting their journey, German Reinheitsgebot, craft beer as punk rock, beer bros., the three-tier distribution system for beer, shelf wars, quality control, beer telling the story of a culture, the visibility of the brewing process in downtown and an intuitive dog. I hope you'll enjoy my conversion with Mike and Sarah! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-krol/support

While bookstore bars have usually been bookstores first with OK coffee, and both wine and snacks from a box - things are changing. Bookstore bars are now as much a bar as they are a bookstore and are looking to build a sense of community over a great read. They are a better place to bring a date, and you can read a good book while sipping a glass of wine in a big comfy chair. It turns out that the businesses help each other, not only in creativity but in revenue - when your book sales are low, the bar can keep the business afloat and vice versa. What's not to love? Check out some highlights in this article on the subject https://www.eater.com/22882395/bar-bookstore-cafe-trend-natural-wine-coffee-menu Monster Beverage Corporation is now going to be a Brewing powerhouse after acquiring the CANarchy Brewery Collective - adding craft beer and hard seltzer to their company. The transaction includes the Cigar City, Oskar Blues, Deep Ellum, Perrin Brewing, Squatters, and Wasatch brands. Barring any regulatory staling, the sale should be completed by the end of the First Quarter of 2022. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/monster-beverage-corporation-acquire-canarchy-130500240.html And is it a case of Willy Wonka, or a copycat of BrewDog's recent gold can contest? Louise Simone Bennett-Coverley or Miss Lou, OM, OJ, MBE (7 September 1919 – 26 July 2006), was a Jamaican poet, folklorist, writer, and educator. Writing and performing her poems in Jamaican Patois or Creole, she worked to preserve the practice of presenting poetry, folk songs and stories in patois ("nation language").Louise Bennett was born on September 7, 1919 on North Street in Kingston, Jamaica. She was the only child of Augustus Cornelius Bennett, the owner of a bakery in Spanish Town, and Kerene Robinson, a dressmaker. After the death of her father in 1926, Bennett was raised primarily by her mother. She attended elementary school at Ebenezer and Calabar, continuing to St. Simon's College and Excelsior College, in Kingston. In 1943 she enrolled at Friends College in Highgate, St Mary where she studied Jamaican folklore. That same year her poetry was first published in the Sunday Gleaner. In 1945 Bennett became the first black student to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after being awarded a scholarship from the British Council. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Bennett worked with repertory companies in Coventry, Huddersfield and Amersham, as well as in intimate revues across England.[6] During her time in the country she hosted two radio programs for the BBC - Caribbean Carnival (1945-1946) and West Indian Night (1950).
