In this episode, Megan and Frank investigate the strange phenomenon of past life memories. Are past life memories evidence for reincarnation? Is what we remember a good guide to who we are? And how might a single identity span different lifetimes? Thinkers discussed in this episode include Plato, Pythagoras, Thomas Reid, J.M.E. We've arrived at our penultimate listener favorite from season 8. We called this one “Access: A love Story.” It was magical for Qudsiya to revisit the unforgettable day that she and her partner, also a Down to the Struts alum, Sean Collins, promised to love each other for the rest of their lives. They've been married for nearly two years now, and they've had their fair share of adventures since. But they continue to cherish those precious moments with the people they hold dearest in the world, because of the incredible work of access artist Cheryl Green and photographer extraordinaire, Jasmine Oliver, on their accessible wedding album. Qudsiya and Sean think of Cheryl and Jasmine every time they experience the symbiotic pleasure of image combined with voice. Also thanks to the audio talents of Ramya Amuthan with production and sound design support from the one and only Thomas Reid. Access truly is an act of love. And here, once again, is Qudsiya and Sean's love story. We're continuing our treatment of Thomas Reid's Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense (1764), now discussing ch. 6: "Of Seeing." Does vision provide the exception to Reid's point that our sensations do not resemble objects in the world? Images surely seem to do so! What does this mean for Reid's epistemology? We begin Bradley's argument for idealism: The world as we perceive it is appearance, not reality. In ch. 1, "Primary and Secondary Qualities," we see him give Locke's arguments for the distinction and Berkeley's response that both alike are in the mind, not the world. We try to make sense of this given our recent reading for The Partially Examined Life of Thomas Reid, who argued for realism against Berkeley and others. Read along with us, starting on p. 17. Continuing on Inquiry into the Human Mind, getting further into the chapter on smelling as well as the conclusion and Reid's exchange with Hume. What exactly is our relation with objects in the world according to Reid? Get more at partiallyexaminedlife.com. Visit partiallyexaminedlife.com/support to get ad-free episodes and bonus content.
On Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense (1764): the introduction, conclusion, ch. 2 "Of Smelling" ch. 4 "Of Hearing," and some correspondence between Reid and Hume. According to Reid, the big mistake of "modern" philosophy is thinking that objects in the world need to resemble the sensations we have of them. Smelling is supposed to give us an obvious counter-example: the scent of a rose in no way resembles a physical rose. Get more at partiallyexaminedlife.com. Send me a text message Join me for another heart-breaking episode, where I share the real life story of 'The White Witch O'Dalry', Bessie Dunlop. Bessie Dunlop was one of the many women to be persecuted, tortured and killed for 'witchcraft'. Her crime - helping her neighbours when they or their animals were sick, and helping them find their lost possessions. With the help of what I believe was her Spirit Guide, Thomas Reid, Bessie was able to find the herbs and plants that would cure ailments, and also call-on his help to locate lost items. Bessie was a well-respected member of the community who everyone liked. Until one day, when she couldn't locate an item for a neighbour, after saying she would help them.On Sunday 26th May 2024, I shall be lighting a candle for Bessie, and all the victims of the Witch Trials. This week I speak with Thomas Reid, sales and marketing manager for Lailey Winery. This week Lailey has had two wines in the Top Wines of Ontario count down and we will be speaking to Thomas about the 2022 Lailey Riesling and the Stonebridge 2019 Estate Chardonnay. We've got another 13 wines to go before we see who holds the #1 spot on our Rock And Grapes count down.
My first guest this week is May Pang. May spent most of 1973 and 1974 being the most important person in John Lennon's life. May and I discuss the new documentary streaming now, "The Lost Weekend: A Love Story", the story that chronicles the years she spent as John Lennon's girlfriend - first at the insistence of Yoko Ono, but then things got....complicated. For any Beatles fan - this is a must-see-documentary. Over the thirty minutes we speak you will learn about May, and the incredibly interesting life she has led. This week I also speak with Thomas Reid, the Marketing and Sales Manager at Lailey Vineyards/Stonebridge. Thomas gives us an introduction to Lailey and the happenings as of late - and a look into how they approach creating premium wines in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The month of November marks the death of John Witherspoon, one of the most important and most underrated of the American founding fathers. Born in Scotland in 1723, Witherspoon received a Master of Arts at age 16 from the University of Edinburgh, where he would continue his studies in divinity. In 1745, he became an evangelical minister in the Church of Scotland. Witherspoon was no fan of the monarchy and was imprisoned the following year for opposing the royalist Jacobite uprising, an experience that damaged his health for life. After his release, he returned to pastoral ministry. In 1764, the University of St. Andrews awarded Witherspoon an honorary Doctor of Divinity. Four years later, Witherspoon accepted the presidency of the College of New Jersey, a Presbyterian college now known as Princeton University. Though the school's primary mission was to train Presbyterian ministers, Witherspoon found the school in quite a mess. The students were given poor teaching and an inadequate library. Through fundraising, reorganization, higher standards, and securing new resources–including donating hundreds of books from his personal library–Witherspoon transformed the college into a top-tier school. In addition to providing leadership at a crucial time in the university's history, Witherspoon taught courses in rhetoric, history, divinity, and moral philosophy, a required course at the college. His ideas were anchored in his Reformed faith and the natural law tradition. He was also heavily influenced by Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid's Common Sense Realism. These ideas took deep root in Princeton and across American society generally. Witherspoon's teaching laid essential groundwork for both the American Revolution and the government that followed. Leaning heavily on the Calvinistic tradition, Witherspoon promoted the rights of people to challenge governmental overreach, even by force of arms if necessary. Unsurprisingly, he strongly supported the American Revolution, especially concerned by a growing centralization of government and the Crown taking over responsibilities that were historically the prerogatives of the colonies. The final straw for Witherspoon was when bishops were appointed from England to oversee religious life in the colonies. Like his Presbyterian forebearers in Scotland, Witherspoon saw these violations as justification for revolt. He served in the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1784, taking on a prodigious amount of work and serving on over 100 committees. After the war, he helped draft the Articles of Confederation and later shepherded the Constitution through the New Jersey state legislature. Even with that impressive resume, Witherspoon's most important impact came from the students who took his moral philosophy classes at the College of New Jersey. Witherspoon taught James Madison the necessity of checks and balances in government. Among his other students were Aaron Burr, 37 judges, including several members of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and three justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, 10 cabinet officers, 12 members of the Continental Congress, 28 U.S. Senators, and 49 U.S. Congressmen. Witherspoon was arguably the single most influential founder who shaped the early years of the Republic. Despite all this, Witherspoon is mostly remembered today for owning two slaves. Like many of the founders, Witherspoon's attitudes toward slavery were complex and often contradictory, a fact that explains but does not excuse his stance. Witherspoon taught that slaves and employees should be treated with dignity and respect. He even spoke out against the institution of slavery at the college. However, he also opposed a measure by the state legislature that would have banned slavery in New Jersey. Like many others, Witherspoon believed slavery would die out within a generation, and thought the legislation was unnecessary and could interfere with the process he believed was inevitable. Though there were a few consistent abolitionists among the founders, Witherspoon was among the many elites in the eighteenth century who owned slaves as domestic servants or to work land. Witherspoon failed to extend his convictions about liberty for all to the slaves in his midst. That moral tragedy should not fully blot out the honor owed to him for his incredible contributions to the founding of the United States and the securing of the freedoms we enjoy. This Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Glenn Sunshine. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.
Today's episode gives attention to Fredrick Douglass' speech given in 1852, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? When he was summoned to deliver such a speech in front of a crowd of White Abolitionists on July 5, 1852, three million enslaved Africans were being denied their freedom. The Founding Fathers' grievances against King George III were articulated in their understanding in the Age of Reason of the Enlightenment in America. Learned individuals such as Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams were men who read Isaac Newton, John Locke, or Thomas Reid appealed to the innate capacity for reason of the common man. These men question hierarchies based on gender, race, and class. They hoped that natural philosophy might provide a way to transcend the differences that arose within America's exceptionalism. Leaders such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin translated Enlightenment ideals of liberty, rights, and self-government into the underlying premises of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. ► Subscribe Here: https://www.youtube.com/@unlockingourvoices832

It's another conversation on audio description, with two unique perspectives. First up, Steven and Shaun talk about audio description on advertising following a comment by one of our listeners. How prevalent is audio description on advertising worldwide, and what does it mean for ads to have AD added to them? Also, the guys talk to blind narrator and voice-over artist Thomas Reid, who has created memorable audio descriptions for some of the biggest hits on Netflix. Thomas talks about his career and how he got started after losing his vision early on in his life. As always, your feedback is welcome. Producer and host of Reid My Mind Radio, Thomas Reid, stops by to share his journey that started as an infant with a rare form of cancer, retinoblastoma, that eventually took both of his eyes and how life began anew in 2004. Thomas explains what he does to make blindness sound funky and shares some girl dad advise with John. As a pioneer in the new ear of audio description, Thomas talks about the art and creative side of AD and opines on the importance of including the blind and visually impaired community in the process. On today's ID the Future Lehigh University biologist Michael Behe addresses what Philosophy for the People host Pat Flynn considers some of the best objections to Behe's central intelligent design argument. As far back as the 1996 book Darwin's Black Box, Behe has argued that certain features in biology are irreducibly complex. That is, they require numerous essential parts, each carefully fitted to its task and integrated with the other parts, in order for the molecular machine or system to function at all. Two examples are the bacterial flagellum motor and the blood clotting cascade. Such systems are, in Behe's words, irreducibly complex and could not have arisen through any blind and gradual evolution process. The better explanation for their Read More › Source
It's been a few months since our last purely Mixed Bag Monday episode of Outlook, but we're back, in the middle of August, as summer begins to wind down with a mixture of topics we're discussing. Kerry's been writing and taking classes in writing and the natural world and then reading her words, in community with others. Brian's been having a rather creatively productive month, practicing with other likeminded musical friends he's known and performed with for years. Sometimes, it's nice to work on our creative interests, outlets in a tough world where there's always something serious happening in the news and around the world, and art helps us be able to let loose a little. Whether it's the stress on the healthcare system in this province and across the nation, abortion rights for women and other pregnant people being at risk and how this issue in the States finally gets us to study up about the issue in our own country, or August 15th being exactly one year since western countries pulled out of Afghanistan which leaves Afghan people and especially women behind to face oppression and other dangers, human rights of all kinds are threatened and this impacts everyone around the world. It's important we talk about all this on our show, hosted by two disabled siblings in Ontario, Canada. From saying farewell to a friend or opening beans when you meant to open lentils, it's truly a mixed bag of topics. We are spending the week with family, celebrating our nephews and their birthdays in August, and talking Blue Jays baseball, a super summery subject. And last but certainly not least, to round off the show this week, we're sharing promotional material sent to us by Cheryl Green, on behalf of Green and project partner Thomas Reid on the survey they're launching. With support from the Disability Visibility Project, they're putting out a survey collecting information from Deaf and disabled podcasters and consumers of podcasts on building a network or community of Deaf and disabled content creators and consumers of said content. We'll let them explain all this further, but we then go on to discuss an article Reid wrote for DVP on the discussion around whether giving an image description of oneself is necessary, in meetings and in workshops for example, and if there's equity or discrimination in the practice or in the resistance to it since the pandemic and Zoom made us all faces, in little boxes, on a screen. Fill out the survey for Project Project or Podaccess as it's being known as here: https://bit.ly/PODAccess Find Thomas Reid's article (Making a Case for Self-Description: It's Not About Eye Candy) on the Disability Visibility Project's website: https://disabilityvisibilityproject.com/2022/04/12/making-a-case-for-self-description-its-not-about-eye-candy/ And for more background on Green and Reid, give a listen to this captivating discussion on the podcast Down to the Struts on the episode Disabled Podcasters Unite!: https://www.downtothestruts.com/episodes/season-4-episode-6-cheryl-green-thomas-reid

Hi, Y'all! My friends, Cheryl and Thomas (who are superb podcasters BTW), are taking over the Think Inclusive feed for a few minutes today to tell you about a special survey project they are doing. With support from the Disability Visibility Project, Cheryl Green and Thomas Reid are gathering information about disabled podcasters and podcasts focused on disability and accessibility (or “disability podcasts” for short). They will use this information to develop an online listing of podcasts and resource for disabled podcasters to find each other and find audiences. Awesome right? Here is the link if you are interested in taking the survey. Here is a transcript of the promo from Cheryl and Thomas. Thanks for listening, and we will catch you next week in the feed with another episode of Think Inclusive. - Tim

The emergence of a Scottish 'school' of common sense philosophy has not yet been given the historical attention it deserves, despite the fact that the rise of common sense philosophy was one of the most important intellectual developments in the Atlantic world during the second half of the 18th century. In this lecture, Professor Paul Wood examines the responses of common sense philosophers such as James Beattie, James Oswald and Thomas Reid to David Hume's perceived scepticism and irreligion as well as Hume's subsequent reply to his critics. The lecture concludes with an account of the precipitous decline of the Scottish 'School' of common sense.
