“To The End of the Earth” is the last installment in Professor John McManus' trilogy about the US Army in the Pacific during World War II. This book chronicles the events beginning with the retaking of the Philippines and takes readers through the final capitulation of the Japanese empire. McManus is Curator's Distinguished Professor of military history at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is a prolific writer, with 15 published works and is often called upon by national media as a subject matter expert. He previously appeared on American Warrior Radio to discuss some of the more bizarre battles of World War II. He decided to write this series because even though the Army did most of the ground fighting in the Pacific, much of current literature has focused on the roles of the Navy and Marines. The lead actor for the Army in the Pacific was General Douglas MacArthur. McManus describes MacArthur as a complex figure. He was certainly vain glorious but also deeply insecure and loyal. We also discuss two other principal commanders who had distinctly different styles; General Walter Krueger and General Robert Eichelberger. Krueger was an immigrant who began his Army career as a private in the Spanish American War. He was very methodical, often frustrating MacArthur with the pace of his advances. Eichelberger was the exact opposite. A WestPoint classmate of George Patton, he was a “quick dash” commander often “leading from the front with a tommy gun in hand.” McManus' books are always excellently researched and “To the End of the Earth” is no exception.  He takes pride in the fact that he was able to represent the perspective of the average soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Readers will come to appreciate the tremendous logistical effort that was involved in supporting the island hopping campaign against Japan. The armada being assembled for the invasion of the Japanese homeland would have been the largest fleet ever assembled.

In this episode, I talk to award-winning director RACHEL LEARS ("Knock Down the House") about her riveting new climate crisis documentary, "TO THE END," and one of the film's stars, ALEXANDRA ROJAS, the executive director of Justice Democrats. Filmed over 4 tumultuous years, "To the End" captures the emergence of a new generation of environmental leaders and the movement behind the most sweeping climate change legislation in U.S. history. The film follows four dynamic young women— Representative ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ (AOC), activist Varshini Prakash, climate policy writer Rhiana Gunn-Wright, and political strategist Alexandra Rojas— as they grapple with new challenges of leadership and power and work together to defend their generation's right to a future. As Rachel and Alexandra tell me, these bold leaders went from street protests to the halls of Congress, fighting to shift the narrative around climate, revealing the crisis as an opportunity to build a better society. Check out the film's trailer and website below. It's been a busy few months and we finally bring you our interviews with four directors of documentaries and shorts from Sundance 2022. To The End is director and cinematographer Rachel Lears' follow up to her 2019 documentary, Knock Down the House. It once again follows representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and three women environmental activists pushing hard for climate change legislation- first with the Green New Deal, then with President Biden's Build Back Better plan. Rachel wants people to watch the film and become inspired to engage in politics in the United States in order to build a better world. To The End is currently playing at the Hot Docs film festival in Canada and is seeking distribution. Find Rachel Lears: https://www.jubileefilms.com/rachel-lears Twitter: @jubileefilms Instagram: @racheliplears As the title suggests, TikTok, Boom. is about how the social media app TikTok has exploded for both viewers and content makers. Shalini Kantayya's documentary explores the phenomenon, from the young people who consume it to the influencers who are now themselves a brand. But the Chinese company behind TikTok, Bytedance, uses the app for data mining, restricts certain content deemed too political, and could pose security risks for anyone watching or using TikTok. Shalini researched, found the TikTok influencers and shot the documentary very quickly. TikTok, Boom. also played at SXSW this year and has yet to be released. Shalini's previous film, 2020's Coded Bias is critically acclaimed and won several awards. Carlos set out to make it as a feature film, but decided to develop the story into a television series instead. In a heated race, Blur emerged victorious in our first-ever request episode. Suggested by our friend Molly in Boston, the 1994 British classic beat out over 40 other suggestions in a public vote. The 16-track LP is the longest album we've ever done but we tore through it, despite some fun surprise interruptions. Lots of strong opinions and amusing tales, including the time Sam and Adam squeezed into a tiny club with the band to watch up-and-comers Oasis. I've been wrestling with this for a week or so, whether it's right or wrong to use proving others wrong as motivation. Honestly, I don't think I come to a moral conclusion in this, but I do have an answer: No, it's not necessarily wrong, but there's a caveat. If you want an extended study about the topic, feel free to check out my blog and leave a comment there, with your opinion! I'm learning, same as you, and I don't have all the answers. This week's episode is dedicated to the books we've read this year. We made goals to read more books this year, and we did! Jihae has a goal of 19 for 2019, and Chris has already surpassed that, and Jihae just has 1 more to go. We apologize in advance for the audio issues. Not sure what happened, but it doesn't sound great, and we are sorry about that! 74 episodes in and we still aren't audio/technical wizards. We are actually replacing the original audio file, so if you listened to it before Friday the 8th of November, then you got the super crummy version of this episode. We are working on all these things! So, here is Chris' list of books that he read. The asterisk denotes that Jihae also read that book: Chris' books from 2019: 1- For Men Only- Jeff Feldhaun * 2 Team of Teams- General Stan McChrystal 3- Millionaire Next Door- Thomas J Stanley 4- Everyday millionaire - Chris Hogan (We mentioned "Thou Shalt Prosper" by Daniel Lapin, a great book we both read last year.) 5- You Can’t Make This Up- by Kevin Hart * And one of our FAVORITE books from this year! Worth the listen, as Kevin narrates it on Audible. 6- Tech Wise Family by Andy Crouch * Very good read! 7- 12 rules for life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B Peterson * 8- Mindset by Carol Dweck * Both read this, and it is a MUST-READ in our opinion! 9, 10, 11- 3 Mitch Rapp books by Vince Flynn about an assassin. "No thank you on any of those books" - Jihae 12- The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fu&$ - by Mark Manson * Really good read! 13- The Great Courses, Art of war by Andrew Wilson 14- Great Courses- CBT 15- Leadership: Gain Confidence to Influence as a Leader Through Communication Skills and Coaching by Nathan Smart 16- The Connected Child by Karen Purvis * Both read this, and it's in the top 5, and is a Must Read for foster and adoptive families (and parents in general). 17- Garbage Bag Suitcase by Shenandoah Chefalo * Great book. 18- Talk like TED by Carmine Gallo * Great book if you want to improve your public speaking. 19- The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni 20- Good Leaders ask Great questions by John Maxwell 21- Upside Down Crown by Robert Watson * BEST BOOK EVER! :) You can hear from the author on Episode 62. Also the only book he has read with his eyes this year! 22- Essentialism by Greg Mc Keown * Read this book and it's a great one! 23- The 3 Day Effect by Florence Williams. Jihae's books from 2019 (without the ones that overlap with Chris) 1. Epic Content Marketing by Joe Pulizzi 2. Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple  Such a fun read! And read it in paperback! Yay for reading with your eyes! 3. Permission Marketing by Seth Godin 4. Chop Wood Carry Water by Joshua Medcalf Not a great book. It's fine, but not great. 5. None Like Him: 10 Ways God is Different From Us by Jen Wilkin Another fine book, but not my favorite 6. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee FINALLY read this, and in paperback! Definitely now know why it's a classic. First 3/4s of the book was very hard to get through! But worth pushing through. 7. Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling Also a paperback book that I read, and it was Amazing! So fun! And she does narrate the audio version, so I bet that is amazing. I will buy this next book on Audible! 8. The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker This is one of my top 5! Definitely worth the read! 9. To The End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care by Cris Beam. Very difficult in parts, but worth the read. And it's pretty long, and mostly looks at foster care in New York.  So, that's it! We truly believe that readers are leaders! But not all leaders are readers, but the best ones are. In this episode, Beth and Jenna chat about writing To The End, Blessed is She’s 2019 Lent devotional, and about how, despite being terrifying, the practice of vulnerability is actually the key to an open-hearted life -- one that imitates Jesus and the Father. Resources mentioned: "I call heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live..." // Deuteronomy 30:19 “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” // C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

This week Renan and Bill welcome back season 2 guest Mark Netter to talk about what might just be the original mindfuck movie: 1961's French-language LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD, directed by Alain Resnais in collaboration with novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet. If you've never seen Marienbad, worry not, there is nothing we can say about it that will ruin this movie. Even after multiple viewings and a long discussion, we still don't know what it means—but that doesn't stop your hosts from trying! Also discussed: how Bill and Renan failed Marienbad on first viewing; how WWII and the Nazi occupation influenced the filmmakers; what major philosophical rabbit holes the movie opens up; how Resnais staged things to disorient the viewer; what that matchstick game is all about; how it was received in Paris and New York upon release; what Kubrick and Lynch and the Nolans—and even Blur—borrowed from it; plus, the "cameo" by none other than Alfred Hitchcock.
