My biggest concern is that people are in the ears of the players all year. The portal is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. I'm worried about the kids; the pressure on them is enormous.”(10:24) – How do you manage the outside money? – “I'd love to have more transparency.”(16:44) – What keeps you doing this? – “I'm still living the dream.”(20:49) – Are these issues seeping down to the high schools?(25:06) – Talk about the departures of Gehrig Normand, Xavier Booker, and Tre Holloman.(31:48) – Are there conversations going on to try to change the system?(34:50) – Talk more about Jase Richardson.(39:26) – Is there an appetite among the players for more structure? – “There will be more unintended consequences.”(47:31) – What solutions would you suggest? And if nothing changes, where are we headed? – “I wish there was total transparency. And I wish coaches would respect each other more than I think we do.”(54:09) – How do you go about retaining your current players?(58:48) – Closing thoughts and Jud-isms.Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

We dug into to the news that Michigan State's Tre Holloman has entered the transfer portal — why it happened, what it means for Holloman and MSU. Plus our takes on Xavier Booker and Gehrig Normand leaving, on MSU's Elite Eight loss to Auburn and the season the Spartans had, on MSU hockey and the absurdity of a one-and-done NCAA tournament in that sport, and more.

August 9, 2023: 6'5" freshman wing Gehrig Normand joins us again to discuss his first impressions at Michigan State. Our sit down went down a number of avenues from what he thinks of East Lansing (in the summer), Moneyball, his freshmen teammates, and coach Izzo. When we asked him what he thought of the yelling from Izzo and the staff he simply shrugged it off and said it showed they actually care. Besides, he recalled, his dad yelled all the time and coached him through middle school. But is there a difference between Izzo's corrections and his dad's? Tune in to find out what he said. Are you looking for Spartan gear? There's only one place to go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. They also have a large assortment of apparel for other schools as well as stickers for your wall, car, or computer. You can also buy our merchandise to sport around town where all the sales proceeds go to support the show. July 26, 2023: Lansing's annual pro-am basketball tournament that features Michigan State's roster, Moneyball, is happening again this year. This year's free to the public event at Holt High School allows for all Spartan fans an opportunity to get an early glimpse of the incoming freshmen and a peek at how last year's players are progressing. As always, defense is optional at Moneyball so there's only so much that you can take away from the tournament. Many remember the summer that Tum Tum Nairn torched the nets from 3 only to struggle to score the following year during the regular season. So evaluations are best taken with a big grain of salt. However, there are things that can be discerned from what we see. We can evaluate the body conditioning of players, their ability to shoot (when wide open), athleticism, and their health. Oh, and can they dunk? On all those counts, MSU looks ready for next year and returning veterans will be joined by some very talented Freshmen including two McDonald's All-Americans, freak athlete Coen Carr, and sharpshooter Gehrig Normand. The last two put on a show with Normand hitting 3s and Carr putting down unbelievable dunk after unbelievable dunk. It's only Moneyball but the future certainly looks bright for this squad. It's the bad gets show! So much of the discourse all spring is about "good gets", so we go over the signings we didn't love this spring in the portal. Of course, this isn't to say a player isn't good, but the team-building strategy behind the move was often flawed and can be the difference between getting fired and going to the postseason. Plus, plenty of thoughts on recruiting, including Michigan State's recent heater with Gehrig Normand and Coen Carr, Kansas State's second top-75 recruit of the class, Ohio State's continued success with multi-year guys, and much more.
Justin Thind and Twitter sensation "MSU Chief of Propoganda" discuss MSU's four recent commitments of Xavier Booker, Gehrig Normand, Stanton Ramil, and Nick Marsh. Afterwards, they talk Michigan State football's preseason camp. Corey Robinson also joins mid-way through. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
August 2, 2022: Rod and Eric discuss the newest Michigan State recruitment of 2023 SF Gehrig Normand from Texas. Normand's commitment to MSU comes after just a three and a half week courtship with Tom Izzo and his staff. By all accounts, Normand was heading to Wisconsin to play his college ball until the Spartans staff reached out to him and convinced him that Madison really isn't as great a place to play basketball as East Lansing. Also, they discuss the hiring of a replacement recruiting coordinator, John Borovich. Borovich has deep ties to the team as he was a high school teammate of Matt Ishbia, played college basketball under Mark Montgomery, worked as a grad assistant under Tom Izzo, and later coached with Montgomery at Northern Illinois. Most recently, he was an assistant coach under Chris Collins at Northwestern. Borovich will fill the vacated role that Mike Garland left after his retirement this summer. July 31, 2022: The much hyped recruitment of Xavier Booker from Indiana went Tom Izzo's way as he selected MSU to play his college basketball. Booker was out of the top 100 when Izzo began his recruitment of the 6' 11" power forward but has recently moved up to the top of the charts this season as his game has developed. Booker has even been ranked as the number one of his class according to some recent rankings. Also, two new recruits for the 2023 class took their official visits to MSU this weekend. Both are out of region targets and very late in the recruiting process but word has it that MSU has a good chance on one if not both. Gehrig Normand and Coen Carr would fill the role of the 3/4 which probably be a large need with the departures of Joey Hauser and maybe Malik Hall. Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode of Bucky's 5th podcast, we've got a little bit of everything to get to. First, we start with Dana Rettke winning another award which adds to the insane list of awards during her UW career. After that, we get into some basketball and discuss Johnny Davis heading to the Washington Wizards as a top ten pick! Later, we give some other quick basketball updates including the Badgers ACC/Big Ten matchup and some recruiting news surrounding Gehrig Normand and a top-of-the-board player in the 2024 class. In the back half of the show, we focus in on Wisconsin football recruiting as the Badgers picked up another two BIG commits to bolster the trenches this week. First, we discuss Jamel Howard and his possible impact at nose tackle. After that, we get into Christopher Terek who should bring some serious size and strength to the offensive line room. Gehrig Normand is a big visitor for Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers basketball program. The 6-6 wing out of Texas would fill an big need in the 2023. I talk about his shooting ability and his offensive skill, he has a unique ability to score at all three levels and has the size and frame to play high-level basketball. In the next segment I talk about more football official visitors coming to Madison this weekend. Jace Arnold is an undersized cornerback from Georgia with a lot of speed and quickness. I love his ability on special teams to bring something unique to Madison. I also talk about Trech Kekahuna once again, the slot WR coming from Hawaii - why there may not be many receivers in this class. Finally some bad news for the football program, Travian Blaylock has a confirmed torn ACL. The injury isn't new, but the confirmation of the severity is -- its a really tough break for Blaylock who was in a prime spot for a starters position this year. Learn more about your ad choices.
