November 19, 2023: Capping what was a very good weekend for MSU sports fans with a basketball victory over Butler Friday night, the football team winning a road game, the MSU hockey team sweeping #1 Wisconsin, and the Lions coming from behind to climb to 8-2 on the season, the win over Alcorn State was icing on the cake. The Spartans were without leading scorer Tyson Walker but didn't need him as Tre Holloman had a career high 17 point behind 5/5 shooting from 3 to go along with five assists and 1 turnover and 2 steals. Aside from Tre's 3s came the highlight dunk of the season by Coen Carr who posterized a hapless Brave by going through him for a two handed dunk on his head.  This was a game Michigan State needed to gain some confidence and maintain their focus which they largely did. This year's free to the public event at Holt High School allows for all Spartan fans an opportunity to get an early glimpse of the incoming freshmen and a peek at how last year's players are progressing. As always, defense is optional at Moneyball so there's only so much that you can take away from the tournament. Many remember the summer that Tum Tum Nairn torched the nets from 3 only to struggle to score the following year during the regular season. So evaluations are best taken with a big grain of salt. However, there are things that can be discerned from what we see. We can evaluate the body conditioning of players, their ability to shoot (when wide open), athleticism, and their health. Oh, and can they dunk? On all those counts, MSU looks ready for next year and returning veterans will be joined by some very talented Freshmen including two McDonald's All-Americans, freak athlete Coen Carr, and sharpshooter Gehrig Normand. It's the bad gets show! So much of the discourse all spring is about "good gets", so we go over the signings we didn't love this spring in the portal. Booker was out of the top 100 when Izzo began his recruitment of the 6' 11" power forward but has recently moved up to the top of the charts this season as his game has developed. Booker has even been ranked as the number one of his class according to some recent rankings. Also, two new recruits for the 2023 class took their official visits to MSU this weekend. Both are out of region targets and very late in the recruiting process but word has it that MSU has a good chance on one if not both.
