Wednesday, 11 June 2025   For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law'; Matthew 10:35   “For I came to sunder man against his father, and daughter against her mother, and bride against her mother-in-law” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus noted that He did not come to bring peace on earth, but a sword. In explanation of that, He next cites Micah 7:6, turning it from a proclamation concerning the conduct of the people of Israel to a statement concerning the sword He referred to. He does this beginning with, “For I came to sunder man against his father.”   In Micah, this clause reads, “For son dishonors father.” In Jesus' statement is a word found only once in the New Testament, dichazó, The word is derived from dis, twice. Thus, it is a cutting apart. Hence, to sunder. Figuratively, it means to set at variance. It is akin to our modern prefix dis, such as in discord, disharmony, or the commonly used idiom to dis someone.   Jesus is probably saying that those who dishonor their father are the type to reject Christ. Such a person has ignored the Fifth Commandment, placing himself as one who rejects the structure of the home as ordained by God. As such, there will be a sword between the unrepentant son and the repentant father when the gospel is presented. Next, Jesus says, “and daughter against her mother.”   Micah 7:6 says, “Daughter rises against her mother.” This is like the first clause in that the daughter is set at variance with her mother, similar to that of the son dishonoring the father. There will be strife between the two because of His gospel. He next says, “and bride against her mother-in-law.”   Another new word is introduced here, numphé, a bride or a daughter-in-law. It is derived from nupto, to veil, as in a veiled bride. This is cognate to the Latin nupto, to marry. The word extends to a betrothed girl.   Micah 7:6 says, “Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” Again, we see a discord being explained by Jesus as cited by Micah. In the Hebrew of Micah, the word kalah, completer is used to describe the daughter-in-law. It signifies a bride because the daughter-in-law is what completes a family unit.   In other words, having a son allows a man to continue his name and family, but without a daughter-in-law, a completer, the family remains incomplete. As such, she is to be a treasured member of the family.   But that should go both ways. She should honor those of the family she is uniting with. However, with the gospel introduced, this special bond between the mother and the household completer is divided.   Life application: Despite the fact that Jesus is speaking to Israel while under the law, the truths explained by Him do not end there because these are truths that extend beyond to law. The family unit was established prior to the law. When something interrupts that unit, discord leading to dishonor will naturally result.   Paul even refers to the necessity of maintaining the soundness of the Fifth Commandment in Ephesians 6:1-3 –   “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 ‘Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise: 3 ‘that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.'”   This is not a matter of salvation in the church, but it is a precept that bears the weight of the family unit established by God at the very beginning. Son is born to father. Because of this, there should be honor given to him. This is not explicitly stated prior to the law, but it is a precept clearly understood in the Genesis and Exodus narrative prior to the giving of the law.   This follows through with respect by the females within the house as well. Honoring the mother is considered an essential part of the makeup of the nuclear family. As such, one can see why those on the left throughout the world are doing their utmost to destroy the nuclear family. In doing so, the supposed shackles of God's unjust plan are cast off, and the chaos of perversion becomes the welcomed standard.   Be sure to understand the spiritual battle that is taking place each time a government is influenced by those on the left. Their stand is ultimately a stand against God's structure and order for the family, something quite clearly upheld by the gospel because Jesus is God.   Lord God, help us to think clearly and reasonably about what Your word is telling us regarding biblical principles. There are things we are to do to retain a godly balance and propriety in our lives. Without knowing what Scripture says, we cannot do this. So, help us in this daily pursuit of Your precious word. Amen.

Wednesday, 4 June 2025   And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28   “And you fear not from those killing the body, and the soul not being able to kill. But more you fear the ‘being able also soul and body to destroy in Gehenna'” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus told His apostles, “What I tell you in the darkness, you speak in the light, and what to the ear you hear, proclaim upon the roofs!” He now continues with this line of instruction, beginning with, “And you fear not from those killing the body, and the soul not being able to kill.”   Jesus introduces a new word, apokteinó, to kill outright. Figuratively, it means to destroy or put to death. It is derived from apo, from, and kteinó, to kill. Thus, it is more forceful than the word kill. Despite that, English translations generally say kill, not making a distinction between the words.   The words of Jesus, even without being finished, provide the hope of life beyond this earthly life. Otherwise, if the body died, the soul would die too. As Jesus is the promised One of God, His words then refute the doctrine of the Sadducees, who claimed there is no resurrection (Matthew 22:23, Acts 23:8).   Either this would be the case, or the soul that lived after the body would be forever separated from the body, something the Bible doesn't teach. As such, their doctrine was completely unscriptural.   Jesus told the apostles to boldly herald His instruction using the idea of proclaiming it from the housetops to make the point poignant. However, His words now are intended for them to understand that there may be consequences for this. Those who hear may be upset to the point that they would come after them and kill them for their words.   Despite this, and even if this were the case, the soul would remain alive, even with the body in a state of death. Understanding this, He next says, “But more you fear the ‘being able also soul and body to destroy in Gehenna.'”   Throughout the church age, these words have been fretted over by mushy scholars who cannot fathom that God would send someone to destruction, failing to realize that the God of the New Testament is the same God of the Old Testament. The coming of Jesus changes nothing in His nature.   Rather, Jesus was sent to save men, but not all men will be saved. The words clearly point to this fact. What would be the point of the apostles going forth to obtain converts if nobody were to face Gehenna? It would mean that those who received their message would be on the same footing as those who rejected it and killed them.   To get around this, these misdirected souls say that the words are speaking not of God but of the devil, as if the devil has the power to destroy those who are not saved by God. This would only move God back one step from the destruction process as He is ultimately in control of all things.   Or it would mean that God is actually not in control of all things and unable to save the souls He sent Jesus into the world to save. It would mean that God's plan for redeeming humanity was only partially effective.   In Job, Satan was prohibited from taking Job's life, demonstrating that God is even in control of that part of the equation. In the New Testament, we are implored to stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11), be sober and vigilant when considering the devil (1 Peter 5:8), and resist the devil (James 4:7).   Hebrews 2:14 says that the devil holds the power of death. This is true. Man fell because of the work of the devil. In that act, sin entered the world and death through sin (Romans 5:12). Life terminating in death is the default state of man. But the devil has no power beyond that.   Rather, the word says in James 4:12 that there is one Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy. In Revelation 20:10, the devil is cast into the Lake of Fire. Only after that does it say that Death and Hades were cast into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:14) and that anyone not found written in the Book of Life will be cast into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:15).   Clearly, Jesus' words here are referring to God in judgment against unrepentant man (see Revelation 21:8). The devil does not possess this power. Rather, he only holds the power of death over those who are not redeemed. Jesus, having prevailed over death, has secured eternal life and freedom from death for those who are saved through Him.   As such, we are not to fear those who can kill our bodies but not our souls. We are to fear God, who alone has the ability to destroy body and soul. Additionally, the words here, when rightly considered, confirm the doctrine of free will. There are those who will accept the word and those who will reject it. Otherwise, what would be the point of the apostles sharing the word in the first place?   Life application: Although this verse in Matthew doesn't specifically explain if there is eternal punishment or not, the Bible makes it clear that God doesn't just throw people into the Lake of Fire where they are incinerated and terminated (the doctrine of annihilationism).   Rather, the Bible explains elsewhere that hell is eternal. This is not intended to “scare people into heaven.” Rather, it is a truth that the Bible proclaims. Focusing too much on hell causes one to miss the wonder of God's grace found in the giving of His Son for us.   We are not saved to go to heaven, we are saved from our default position, which is condemnation (John 3:18, etc.). Heaven is a result of being saved by God through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Tell people today about the grace of God that has redirected human souls to the glorious path of life and restoration! Tell people about Jesus!   Lord God, how grateful we are to You for Your wonderful plan of salvation through the giving of Christ Jesus to redeem us to Yourself. We stand in awe of what You have done. Forever and ever we will praise You for the marvel and majesty of Jesus Christ our Lord. Halleluiah and Amen.

Monday, 5 May 2025   But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Matthew 9:36   “And having seen the crowds, He gut-wrenched about them, for they were having been enervated and having been strewn, as sheep not having a shepherd” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus was said to have gone about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues about the gospel of the kingdom. He was also said to cure those with every sickness and disease. Now, Matthew records, “And having seen the crowds, He gut-wrenched about them.”   Here is a new word, splagchnizomai, translated as gut-wrenched. It is derived from splagchnon, meaning the bowels or inward parts. Thus, it signifies to have the bowels yearn. A single, hyphenated word to get a literal sense of what is conveyed would be gut-wrenched. Figuratively, it signifies having compassion.   Jesus looked at the masses, and His internal parts surely moved with pity, sadness, and a deep yearning to take away their lost state. Understanding this, the reason for it is next stated, saying, “for they were having been enervated and having been strewn.”   Two more new words, both perfect participles, are seen here. The first is ekluó. HELPS Word Studies says, it is from “ek, ‘out from and to' and lýō, ‘loose, let go') – properly, let completely out as to (entirely) succumb, i.e. with the outcome of losing inner strength; hence, to become weary (exhausted), to the point of fainting.” Thus, a great word to match the thought is enervate.   The next new word is rhiptó. The root of this word signifies to fling. Thus, it gives the sense of being scattered about. A suitable word to catch the intent is strewn. The reason for this tired and disheveled state of the people is because they were “as sheep not having a shepherd.”   Sheep without a shepherd would be in just this state. They would be worn out from a lack of care. They would also be enervated and strewn about as they were harassed by lions, wolves, or other predators. This is what the people of Israel were like. The Old Testament repeatedly explains why this was so. Jeremiah 50 gives the sense –   “My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray; They have turned them away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill; They have forgotten their resting place. 7 All who found them have devoured them; And their adversaries said, ‘We have not offended, Because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, The Lord, the hope of their fathers.'” Jeremiah 50:6, 7   The shepherds of Israel, the leaders of the people, failed to responsibly tend to the people. They led them astray, they abused them for their own gain, and they wore them out in the process. This sentiment is reflected throughout the writings of the prophets.   Life application: In the New Testament, Jesus states He is the good Shepherd, thus fulfilling the typology seen in the Old Testament, such as –   “Behold, the Lord God shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him. 11 He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.” Isaiah 40:10, 11   By claiming to be the good Shepherd, Jesus was claiming to be the Lord incarnate. He was stating to the people that it is He who would tend to His flock and bring them safely through the times of trouble. This is not limited to the people of Israel, but all of God's people. Jesus is the one to unite the flocks into one –   “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. 15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.” John 10:11-16   Thank God for Jesus, who is there to lead and tend to His people.   Glorious God, thank You for the hope we possess of resting forever in Your presence because of Jesus. We long for the day when we, Your sheep, are gathered together forever under our Great Shepherd, Jesus. Amen.

Have you ever heard someone swear in church? What did you do?   Patrick Madrid dives into a heated choir issue! Michelle from Brunswick, Georgia, calls in with a unique problem: her small church choir members are dropping profanities during practice!    Michelle's Dilemma: Michelle, the new choir leader, is horrified to hear profanity in front of the Blessed Sacrament. She's unsure how to handle it without causing more disruption.   Patrick's Bold Advice: Confront them immediately! Tell them: "Stop using profanity in the Lord's house, or you're out!" No sugarcoating, no hesitation.   Be Firm: Patrick insists on standing firm, even if it bruises some feelings. "You're like the good shepherd. Smack the wolf with your staff!"  Figuratively, of course!   Outcome: Michelle feels empowered to take charge. With Patrick's advice, she's ready to handle this challenge and maintain the sanctity of their practice space.   Takeaway: "Bad behavior has no place in church, especially profanity." Sometimes, a direct approach is necessary to uphold respect and reverence in sacred spaces.

Or to put it another way: Brett was convicted of 39 felonies, placed on the U.S. Most Wanted List, escaped from prison, and… he built the first organized cybercrime community, Shadowcrew was a precursor to today's darknet and darknet markets, and it laid the foundation for the way modern cybercrime channels operate today. Johnson was sentenced to 90 months in Federal Prison. End of story? Not hardly. Brett found redemption through his sister, his wife Michele, and finally the FBI. He was given the chance to turn his life around. He took it. Today, Brett is considered one of the leading authorities on cybercrime, identity theft, and cybersecurity on the planet. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: ACX Covid Origins Post convinced readers, published by ErnestScribbler on May 1, 2024 on LessWrong. ACX recently posted about the Rootclaim Covid origins debate, coming out in favor of zoonosis. Did the post change the minds of those who read it, or not? Did it change their judgment in favor of zoonosis (as was probably the goal of the post), or conversely did it make them think Lab Leak was more likely (as the "Don't debate conspiracy theorists" theory claims)? I analyzed the ACX survey to find out, by comparing responses before and after the post came out. The ACX survey asked readers whether they think the origin of Covid is more likely natural or Lab Leak. The ACX survey went out March 26th and was open until about April 10th. The Covid origins post came out March 28th, and the highlights on April 9th. So we can compare people who responded before the origins post came out to those who responded after[1]. We should be careful, though, since those who fill out the survey earlier could be different than those who filled out later, and this could create a correlation which isn't causal. I used a Regression Discontinuity Design on the time of the response to see if there was a break in the trend of responses right at the time the Covid post went up. Figuratively, this compares respondents "right before" the post to "right after" so can help assuage the confound fears. I find that the post made readers more likely to think that the origin was indeed zoonosis. And this is highly significant. Here are the results, in charts. Analysis Here is the number of responses over time, with the timings of the posts highlighted. We'll mostly just need the timing of the Covid origins post, which is around response 4,002. I'm assuming that readers who responded to the survey after the post went up have read the post before responding. This is the post engagement data[1] which shows within a few days of posting, most views of the post already took place. The ACX Survey asked respondents what they thought about Covid origins. I substracted 3 from the questionnaire response, to analyze a centered scale, for convenience. Here are the sliding window averages of 1,000 responses. There are some fluctuations, but quite clearly there is a break in the trend at the time of the post, with readers starting to give scores more towards zoonosis. Looks like the post lowered responses by about 0.5 points (this takes time to transition in the chart, because of the sliding window) There's not enough data to eyeball something about the Comment Highlights post. Another way to look at the same data is using not a sliding window, but a cumulative sum, where the local slope is the average response. I detrended this, so that it has 0 slope before the Covid post, just for convenience again. We very clearly see the break in the trend, and the slope comes out -0.52 points, similar to before. This is almost half a standard deviation, which is a pretty large effect. Needless to say it is extremely statistically significant. In fact, this effect made the Covid origins question the most highly correlated with response order of all survey questions. As a placebo test, I also checked whether this effect exists for other responses, even ones correlated with Covid origins before the post, like views on Abortion, or Political Spectrum. I found nothing that looks nearly this clear. The effects are much smaller if any, and not highly significant. I was curious if the post also had a polarizing effect, where readers became more likely to hold a stronger view after the post, i.e. Lab Leak proponents becoming more certain of Lab Leak, and zoonosis proponents becoming more certain of zoonosis. I don't find much support for this. The sliding window standard deviation of responses does not increase after the post. I'm not sur...

Ecclesiastes (Wisdom When it Comes to Life's Ultimate Meaning)The Smartest Man in the Room – Part 3 Senior Pastor Keith Stewart January 28, 2024 #realspringcreekchurch #thesmartestmanintheroom #solomon #ecclesiastes #themeaningoflife #songofsongs #lovelife #love #relationships #proverbs #wisdom  In the book of Ecclesiastes Solomon asks the question, “How can anyone discover the meaning of life?”  (Ecclesiastes 7.24). At some point, it's a question we all have to answer. Why am I here? What's it all about? Because every one of us longs to find the meaning of life. Ecclesiastes is a deliberate attempt to explore all the options available to us to see what, if anything, gives life ultimate meaning. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. As Pastor Keith pointed out, when Solomon says, everything is meaningless or vanity, the original Hebrew word was havel. Havel literally means “vapor, breath, or wind” in Hebrew. Think of a mere puff of air, the vapor on a coffee cup, or a passing sigh. That's havel. Figuratively speaking, havel refers to something that is empty of genuine gain, something that is fleeting and doesn't last, or is past the full understanding that you can't wrap your mind around. If you've done some reading in Ecclesiastes, what are some things that fall into this category? Now how about for you personally, what are things that are fleeting, don't last, or things that you just can't get your mind wrapped around? 2. The perspective that must be kept in mind as you read Ecclesiastes is Solomon's perspective of life “under the sun.” In other words, from a purely human standpoint, a view of things if you take God out of the picture, life as we see it, and experience it apart from God. In the message notes online, you can re-read the quotes from numerous celebrities who discovered that having money, fame or beauty was not all they thought it would be. Why do you suppose that is? Why is it so difficult to find satisfaction in life?  3. We're impacted by two universal laws. The law of unfulfilled expectations is all about achieving what we set out to do only to discover that it's not everything we dreamed it would be. And the law of diminishing returns is about how over time, the return we get from various activities and accomplishments is lessened. So it takes more and more to get the same level of high or euphoria. How do you see these two laws played out in society or among your friends? How have you experienced them in your personal life? 4. Think of work or money or pleasure as balloons. We fill them with our time, our energy, and our hope. We watch them expand. From the outside, they look to gain mass and you might even assume weight. But inside it's still only vapor. Death is the needle that shows the truth. It can all be taken away in a moment. This is part of Solomon's learning and something we seem to have forgotten in our death-denying, death-avoidant culture. How does the idea of death, facing our own mortality, teach us to live better and more intentionally?5. Pleasures are not goals to live for, but they are bonuses or consolations that we learn to accept with gratitude. The things talked about in Ecclesiastes are not inherently bad; they are just passing away. And because of that, they can never provide a permanent basis for happiness, contentment, or fulfillment. They're not bad things, just not a good foundation.  So pleasure and happiness can never be our aim, not our goal, not our purpose. But they can be enjoyed when they come into your life. How does this inform the way you live?6. As we have immersed ourselves in the wisdom literature of Solomon over the last three weeks, what have been your biggest takeaways? Where have you been challenged to think differently about these books or about your life?

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 18, 2023 is: zenith • ZEE-nith • noun Zenith refers to the strongest or most successful period of time for a person or thing. // At the zenith of her music career in the early 2000s, she released her best-selling album to date. See the entry > Examples: "Once deemed ‘one of the most underrated musicians in rock history' by David Bowie, John Cale is best known as the viola-scraping Velvet Underground co-founder who grounded the group in the avant-garde. But those years hardly marked a creative zenith for Cale. Since leaving the band in 1968, he has released more than a dozen solo albums, ranging in style from orchestral pop to new wave and punk; collaborated with luminaries like Patti Smith and Brian Eno; and scored numerous films." — Olivia Horn, The New York Times, 18 Aug. 2023 Did you know? When you reach the zenith, you're at the top, the pinnacle, the summit, the peak. Zenith developed from an Arabic phrase meaning "the way over one's head," and then traveled through Old Spanish, Medieval Latin, and Middle French before arriving in English. As long ago as the 1300s, English speakers used zenith to name the highest point in the celestial heavens, directly overhead. By the 1600s, zenith was being used for other high points as well. The celestial term is often contrasted with nadir, which refers to the point that is vertically downward from the observer (imagine a line going through the Earth from the observer's feet and out the other side into the sky). Figuratively, nadir simply means "the lowest point."
