MARQUETTE COUNTY - The Lake Superior Community Partnership (LSCP) today announced the selection of Natalie Chmiko as its next Chief Executive Officer. Chmiko, a Skandia resident and seasoned Michigan economic development professional, will begin a structured CEO-designate transition on April 20, 2026, working directly with outgoing CEO Christopher Germain before assuming full leadership responsibilities in May. Chmiko brings more than 12 years of economic development experience to the role, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Culture and Collaborative Operations at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), where she oversaw strategy, organizational development, human resources, and other cross-functional operations. During her time at MEDC, she advanced from an entry-level analyst to a senior executive position, leading strategic initiatives, securing significant state and federal investment, and building collaborative teams that supported Michigan's small business, manufacturing, and community development efforts. Germain, who has led LSCP since 2022, announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down voluntarily to relocate with his family. His decision set in motion a deliberate, board-led search process focused on identifying a leader who could sustain and build on the organization's momentum. “I am so excited for Natalie to step in and continue the momentum we've built together at LSCP. The energy in this organization is real, and it isn't going anywhere. Natalie's depth of experience across Michigan's economic development ecosystem, and her genuine connection to this community, means we're in great hands. She will keep this work moving forward and find new ways to build on what our team and partners have accomplished.” - Christopher Germain, Outgoing LSCP Chief Executive Officer Chmiko and her family relocated to Marquette County in 2023, a decision she describes as intentional and rooted in a long-time love for the region. “My family and I have been drawn to this part of the U.P. for years. The people, the nature, and the sense of community is hard to find anywhere else. I am eager to get to work alongside the talented LSCP team and our incredible network of partners and investors. The organization is in a strong position, and I look forward to building on that by deepening relationships, enhancing what's already working, and helping Marquette County continue to grow.”— Natalie Chmiko, Incoming LSCP Chief Executive Officer During the transition period, community members and partners will have ample opportunities to meet Natalie at LSCP events and through direct outreach. Partners and community members are encouraged to join LSCP at its Annual Dinner on April 16 at Northern Michigan University's Northern Center, Natalie will be introduced ###

Scot and Jeff discuss The Apples in Stereo with Jack Butler. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Jack Butler. Jack is deputy editor for Free Expression, a new newsletter about politics and culture from the Wall Street Journal opinion page. Previously he was submissions editor for National Review Online. You can follow him on Twitter/x @jackbutler4815. And unless you're a 2:30 marathoner, you probably can't follow him in real life — unless he lets you.  Jack's Music Pick: The Apples in Stereo Get ready for sunshine melodies, fuzzed-out guitars, and pure pop sweetness, because we're diving into the colorful world of The Apples in Stereo. On this episode, we walk through the band's discography album by album, tracing how Robert Schneider and company blended psychedelia, power pop, and a DIY spirit into a signature sound. You might not be familiar with the band (yet), but you know the influences -- The Beatles, ELO, XTC, Pavement, Guided by Voices, The Beach Boys. We travel from the lo-fi charm of Fun Trick Noisemaker to the "space disco" feel of Travellers in Space and Time. Along the way, Scot takes the proper time to pay tribute to an all-time favorite album, New Magnetic Wonder, and we discuss the unorthodox ways the band found its way into children's programming. Plus Hilarie Sidney gets her due as an excellent and underrated singer, songwriter, and drummer.  Schneider's interest in science, space, and sound influenced the band's later work specifically, with conceptual elements and unconventional recording approaches shaping their music. New Magnetic Wonder even touts Schneider's invention of a new musical scale: the "Non-Pythagorean scale" (he's now a mathematics professor at Northern Michigan University, so it all makes sense in the end).  Throughout the years, the band kept pushing forward without losing a sense of wonder and experimentation that defined their earliest work and refined their ability to create hooks and melodies that lodge inside your brain for weeks at a time. And you can't tell the story of The Apples in Stereo without diving into the world of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, the loose collective of like-minded musicians that helped spark an indie-pop movement in the '90s. Jack takes the lead in describing this element of the show. This episode is a celebration of melody, creativity, and the joy of making something delightfully strange. It'll fill you with energy. On today's show, host Esty Dinur is in conversation with four guests–Joe Bates, Matthew Borke, Rob Lee, and Gracie Waukechon–who are fighting against the reroute of the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline around the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation in northern Wisconsin. Enbridge has begun construction on the reroute though the legal battle has not been fully resolved. Joe Bates discusses how he uses his drone to observe the construction. He's captured footage of the new easement where Enbridge plans to use horizontal directional drilling to install the new pipeline. Matthew Borke says that what we're hearing from the Trump administration is a forked-tongue message. He encourages folks to stay informed about the legal proceedings.  Gracie Waukechon says that this issue is personal. In light of the threat that the pipeline poses to the lands and waters of the region she says, “I feel as if my future has been taken away from me.” She's also worried about the future of resistance in light of a contract that Ashland County officials signed last month for policing protests.  Rob Lee talks about how Enbridge is starting to break ground on construction of the reroute, but it's not a foregone conclusion that they will get final approval. He reminds listeners that the oil that passes through Line 5 passes from Canada and back to Canada, which should concern people across the political spectrum.  Joe Bates is a Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribal elder and water protector.  Matthew Borke was raised in southern Michigan and graduated as a Chef from Northern Michigan University's Culinary Arts program. Matthew has been organizing for the complete shutdown of Enbridge Line 5 since 2017 locally, nationally, and internationally. Rob Lee is a Senior Staff Attorney at Midwest Environmental Advocates. His work spans a wide range of environmental and public health issues. His areas of focus include PFAS contamination, oil pipelines, Clean Water Act compliance, wetlands and waterways, the Great Lakes, Wisconsin's Public Trust Doctrine, hazardous substances, mining, and open government. Gracie Waukechon/Meyāwāēw (May-yow-way) is a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and a Menominee Descendant. She resides near the Menominee Reservation with her family. Gracie is a student at the College of Menominee Nation and interns at the Sustainable Development Institute. Featured image of the proposed Line 5 reroute via the Wisconsin DNR. This week, we visit Marquette Michigan, a gem no matter the season. This fun town nestled on the shores of Lake Superior is home to Northern Michigan University and really knows how to embrace winter with a flurry of activities and festivals. We kick off the show with Susan Estler from Travel Marquette who gives us an overview of winter in MQT, and then quickly gets down to business with what we love the most, where to eat. You need to warm up at some point, right? And Marquette has an incredible restaurant scene to check out, from funky dive bars with great burgers (yes, we are looking at you Pat's Bar) to hip spots like The Delft Bistro, where you'll feel like you might be in a slightly larger city. Of course, we'll gush on and on about one of our favorites, and a must stop when in town, delicious Lagniappe, which is yes, located in a basement downtown. First and foremost, you don't want to miss the very popular (and fun!) Winterfest and Rail Jam which is happening January 31 to February 1, 2026. Billed as a "marathon of mountain culture", this weekend will feature ski races, live music, and a freesyle rail jam. A highlight is the Torchlight Parade happening Saturday night, please be sure to register at the front desk so you can get your glow on. Also, don't miss FRESH oysters apres ski at the famous T-Bar, you probably won't be finding those anywhere else in the Yoop this weekend. Sunday, enjoy more skiing and racing.Orignally opened in 1957 as Cliff's Ridge, Marquette Mountain Resort is beloved by both locals and visiting tourists alike. In winter, enjoy skiing and snowboarding via three chair lifts and a rope tow. In the warmer months, bring your mountain bike and explore the trails, or just strap on your hiking boots. Anyway you experience MMR, you are sure to have a great time. https://www.marquettemountain.com/Next, Jason Rolling, Race Director for the Noqueamon Ski Marathon, joins us to explain cross country ski racing to us, since there are several kinds of races you can paricipate in.  We found this extra helpful, because now we'll sound like we know what is going on during the Winter Olympics. Thank you Jason! Honestly, this race sounds like it's quite the experience. Jason also shares how important community support is for this race, from the volunteers, to local landowners granting permission for racers to cruise through their private land for the race. Just another reason to love our Yoopers. And, lookin ahead, the 2027 Noquemanon Ski Marathon will be held January 22nd-23rd, so you best start your training now. Finally, we meet Todd Poquette, Director of Adventure forthe Polar Roll, which is the largest fat tire bike race in Michigan, and part of the Great Lakes Fat Tire Series. There are three different races you can participate in on February 21, and we'll just leave you with the race's tag line...."it gets worse, before it gets better". Sounds like this one is for those with experience on the fat tire, we will be at the mass start, which sounds like it might be a little bit wild and right up our alley. We love Marquette, and hope that you do too. If so, be sure to check out the Respect Marquette pledge, and let's keep it amazing for all of us.

Sean and Mike break down a jam-packed night on the ice, starting with the question every Detroit fan is asking: what's the Red Wings' biggest flaw right now — forward depth, defensive depth, or something deeper? The guys dive into the glaring lack of toughness, the missing physical presence that once defined Detroit hockey, and why nobody on this roster scares an opponent the way past Wings teams always had. They examine the growing frustration in net as John Gibson's struggles continue, the mounting case for giving Sebastian Cossa a shot, and the confusing signals coming from a team that can't find consistency anywhere on the ice. On the blue line, they assess Axel Sandin Pellikka's development, the patience required with young defensemen, and the unrealistic chatter around blockbuster Quinn Hughes fantasies. From veteran stability to CHL vs. NCAA development paths, nothing is off-limits.The show also checks in on Calgary, Colorado's nuclear start, Patrick Kane's narrow usefulness, high school hockey storylines across Michigan, the UP's resurgence, Northern Michigan University's stunning collapse, and Olympic hockey anticipation — all with Sean's usual mix of honesty, nostalgia, and humor. It's a full-spectrum hockey episode that balances big-picture perspective with real concerns about Detroit's long-term trajectory.

On this episode of Behind the Mitten, we says thanks to those who work hard to give back and to make Michigan just a little bit better for us all. We meet with four different non-profit organizations from around the state to hear about good things happening in the mitten. We start off with an organization that does some incredible work in the Traverse City region, The Father Fred Foundation. Candice Hamel, the executive director of the program joins us to tell us about the work they've been doing this past year. "The Father Fred Foundation offers help, hope, and compassion to anyone in our community with essential needs," and has been serving since 1989. The numbers speak for themselves: over 1500 pairs of new school shoes distributed, 15,000 bags of clothing and household goods handed out, close to half a million dollars in financial assistance provided, and almost one million dollars in food aid given. This was just in one year! Founded by Father Edwin “Fred” Frederick, a Catholic. priest who served the residents of the Traverse City State Hospital as its Catholic chaplain for thirty years. When the hospital closed in 1989, Fr. Fred's concern for the residents and their future inspired him to create the foundation, which now helps the entire Traverse City Community. Then we head to marvelous Marquette, and learn about the work that the United Way is doing in this part of Michigan. Andrew Rickauer, a Northern Michigan University grad, has been the executive director since 2019. United Way of Marquette County works together with the community on a variety of projects. They manage a county-wide volunteer program with over 2200 participants who have provided over 10,000 hours of work back, they've given away 10,000 pairs of socks, and have helped fund over 25 different community programs. Rickauer shares a few of their current campaigns, as well as why he loves this northern Michigan community. The Revive and Thrive Project is a unique organization that has a two-fold mission: to provide nourishing meals to those who are in a health crisis, and to train and empower our next generation of chefs. As soon as I heard this, I knew I had to volunteer. R&T works out of Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids (fun fact, this was President Ford's home parish!) and provides hundreds of incredible, healthy, delicious  and nutritious meals to communith members who are undergoing a health crisis or medical issues. Executive Chef Mandy Thompson runs the show here, and shares why food is so important to healing, and why working with our Michigan teenagers in the kitchen is so vital to their development. Our final guest has joined us before on the show, and we are always happy to share updates on the important work he is doing around the state, and to talk about his award-winning pizza. Fredi Bello, aka Fredi the Pizzaman, is a man on a mission, who is creating postive change one sensory room at a time. He's been making pizzas since he was a child, and runs a small, very old-school shop in Melvindale right outside of the D. No online ordering, no phone calls, you come in and pull a ticket, place your order and watch the magic unfold. Magical these pizzas are, with bubbly dough that Fredi makes fresh every day, and that earned the unprecedented 8.7 on BarStool Sports. The Fredi the Pizzaman Foundation operates seperately from the pizzeria, and relies on donations to help them place one hundred sensory rooms and countirng around the state, everywhere from schools to large arenas like the Breslin Center at Michigan State Univeristy and Ford Field in Detroit. Fredi started his mission to increase autism awareness and accomadations after his own son was diagnosed. There truly is power in pizza, and you'll find it here.

Campus visits are important components of every college's recruitment and yield program. Having an opportunity to help students learn about campus life is critical. But what's the other side of that equation? What should colleges be learning about students during a campus visit to assist in finding a match? This topic was recommended by our influencer guest, Jenna Shulman, Independent Educational Consultant with Jenna Shulman College Consulting in Florham Park, New Jersey. Bringing the practitioner perspective is an expert in the campus visit experience, Kate Hooper, Senior Associate Director of Admissions for Prospective Student Visit Experiences at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/adlunchcast/message

Just 20 minutes of improv theater can foster creativity and confidence, and help with anxiety, depression, and your ability to tolerate uncertainty. Link to episode transcript: https://tinyurl.com/4t9rjj58 Episode summary: Deema Altaher was never one for the spotlight. So when her husband signed them up for improv classes, she had no idea what to expect. And yet after one class, Deema was hooked. From active listening games to “yes, and” prompts, she found that improv exercises shifted the way she connected with other people, and eased her nerves as she navigated all the uncomfortable parts of starting a new job. She was also inspired to “say yes” to new life opportunities. In fact, an emerging science shows that improv can benefit many people in terms of fostering greater comfort with new situations, inspiring creativity, lifting your mood, and even easing anxiety and depression. Professor Peter Felsman is a social scientist and improviser himself who has tested this spontaneous style of theater in the lab. Felsman explains how improv might cause these improvements, and others, like lessening social anxiety in children.
