Patrick Curran of Northern Michigan University's National Training Site is one of the US Greco-Roman program's brightest young prospects.
On this episode of Behind the Mitten, we says thanks to those who work hard to give back and to make Michigan just a little bit better for us all. We meet with four different non-profit organizations from around the state to hear about good things happening in the mitten. We start off with an organization that does some incredible work in the Traverse City region, The Father Fred Foundation. Candice Hamel, the executive director of the program joins us to tell us about the work they've been doing this past year. "The Father Fred Foundation offers help, hope, and compassion to anyone in our community with essential needs," and has been serving since 1989. The numbers speak for themselves: over 1500 pairs of new school shoes distributed, 15,000 bags of clothing and household goods handed out, close to half a million dollars in financial assistance provided, and almost one million dollars in food aid given. This was just in one year! Founded by Father Edwin “Fred” Frederick, a Catholic. priest who served the residents of the Traverse City State Hospital as its Catholic chaplain for thirty years. When the hospital closed in 1989, Fr. Fred's concern for the residents and their future inspired him to create the foundation, which now helps the entire Traverse City Community. Then we head to marvelous Marquette, and learn about the work that the United Way is doing in this part of Michigan. Andrew Rickauer, a Northern Michigan University grad, has been the executive director since 2019. United Way of Marquette County works together with the community on a variety of projects. They manage a county-wide volunteer program with over 2200 participants who have provided over 10,000 hours of work back, they've given away 10,000 pairs of socks, and have helped fund over 25 different community programs. Rickauer shares a few of their current campaigns, as well as why he loves this northern Michigan community. The Revive and Thrive Project is a unique organization that has a two-fold mission: to provide nourishing meals to those who are in a health crisis, and to train and empower our next generation of chefs. As soon as I heard this, I knew I had to volunteer. R&T works out of Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids (fun fact, this was President Ford's home parish!) and provides hundreds of incredible, healthy, delicious and nutritious meals to communith members who are undergoing a health crisis or medical issues. Executive Chef Mandy Thompson runs the show here, and shares why food is so important to healing, and why working with our Michigan teenagers in the kitchen is so vital to their development. Our final guest has joined us before on the show, and we are always happy to share updates on the important work he is doing around the state, and to talk about his award-winning pizza. Fredi Bello, aka Fredi the Pizzaman, is a man on a mission, who is creating postive change one sensory room at a time. He's been making pizzas since he was a child, and runs a small, very old-school shop in Melvindale right outside of the D. No online ordering, no phone calls, you come in and pull a ticket, place your order and watch the magic unfold. Magical these pizzas are, with bubbly dough that Fredi makes fresh every day, and that earned the unprecedented 8.7 on BarStool Sports. The Fredi the Pizzaman Foundation operates seperately from the pizzeria, and relies on donations to help them place one hundred sensory rooms and countirng around the state, everywhere from schools to large arenas like the Breslin Center at Michigan State Univeristy and Ford Field in Detroit. Fredi started his mission to increase autism awareness and accomadations after his own son was diagnosed. There truly is power in pizza, and you'll find it here.

This topic was recommended by our influencer guest, Jenna Shulman, Independent Educational Consultant with Jenna Shulman College Consulting in Florham Park, New Jersey. Bringing the practitioner perspective is an expert in the campus visit experience, Kate Hooper, Senior Associate Director of Admissions for Prospective Student Visit Experiences at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/adlunchcast/message

About Our Guest: Steven J. Miller obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degree in Psychology at Northern Michigan University. He is currently in the part-time Master of Social Work program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Steven is an advocate for discussion among social workers about the impact of infertility on one's mental health. Steven and his wife had struggled with infertility before being successful using In Vitro Fertilization, resulting in now almost five-year-old twin boys. Steven started his own podcast called MILES highlighting the male experience of infertility and family building. He joined Men's Helpline as a board member in 2023. Men's Helpline is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide emotional support to all men who struggle with pregnancy loss, and infertility. After his MSW, Steven plans to become a LCSW and specialize in Reproductive Mental Health and continue work with the nonprofit. Thanks for joining us again on The Perinatal Podcast! Find Steven! I won state twice before women's wrestling was sanctioned in Wisconsin (2022). This allowed me to be the first-ever WIAA Wisconsin Girls State Champion at 138 lbs. Following this, I could speak in the Journal Sentinel, My Community Now, WISN 12, and other news organizations. My summer has been busy as I coached at multiple camps around Wisconsin sharing my experiences as a female in the sport. I also represented NMU as I raced in Grandma's Marathon where I won my age division. It is important to me to share my experiences to help empower other women. I have done this by speaking at camps, schools, and organizations to help better educate other women about their opportunities in athletics. I am the founder of the RBG club at my former high school (Brookfield Central) where I used that as a platform to educate young women about the importance of their voices. In college, I'm now a volunteer working with the Women's Center with that same mission. Contact her at:Instagram: @roth__marisaFacebook: @marisa.roth26Phone Number: 262-444-8092

Michael Brown joined the Army right out of high school because he knew he wasn't ready for college. After serving 4 years as an infantryman, Michael separated and used his GI Bill to attend Northern Michigan University. Earning a degree in political science and applied ethics, he went on to work for then Congressman-elect, Patrick Murphy, the first Iraq War Veteran ever elected to Congress. Michael served as his Military and Veterans Affairs Director where he supported projects such as the revision and updates of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. He then went on to serve as the Director of Veterans Services for Montgomery County Community College before accepting a role at Villanova University as the first Director of the Office of Veterans and Military Service Members. Since 2018, Michael has been growing the programs, opportunities and community at the university for students and alumni.Choosing to attend college in person, Michael was often the oldest student in his classes. However, he did not allow that to deter him from continuing his degree program. He appreciated learning different perspectives from other students and professors. College helped Michael learn what he liked, didn't like and how he fit into the world. It provided him with a longer landing strip to transition. The Post 9/11 GI Bill offers a maximum benefit of 36 months of education and housing allowance. Michael encourages service members to start taking college courses while they are serving. Not only can they utilize Tuition Assistance without tapping into their GI Bill, but they will also earn credits toward a degree and lessen the amount of benefit they need from their GI Bill once they separate or retire from the military. In Michael's current role, he collaborates with career services and learning support services as well as working with the alumni network and college fundraising arm to ensure student veterans have the resources they need to be successful. Student veterans attend college because they need to upskill or reskill for a meaningful career after military service. By giving student veterans the opportunity to provide feedback about college services, Michael is able to find out what they want and need to be successful in the classroom and in the workforce. Michael focuses on finding quality internship opportunities and creates networking opportunities to help student veterans build a solid network. Over the years, Mike has identified challenges that many student veterans face. First, many college campuses are more aligned with meeting the needs of the traditional 18–22-year-old student. In addition, it can be challenging for a veteran to develop an academic mindset. If you are a current student veteran or a prospective student, reach out to the college and inquire if a veteran office exists on campus. A college education can teach a person about who they are and how they fit into society. Earning a degree involves learning and mastering new skills which should give the student confidence. Interacting with other students and professors will help the student build their professional network. Just 20 minutes of improv theater can foster creativity and confidence, and help with anxiety, depression, and your ability to tolerate uncertainty. Link to episode transcript: https://tinyurl.com/4t9rjj58 Episode summary: Deema Altaher was never one for the spotlight. So when her husband signed them up for improv classes, she had no idea what to expect. And yet after one class, Deema was hooked. From active listening games to “yes, and” prompts, she found that improv exercises shifted the way she connected with other people, and eased her nerves as she navigated all the uncomfortable parts of starting a new job. She was also inspired to “say yes” to new life opportunities. In fact, an emerging science shows that improv can benefit many people in terms of fostering greater comfort with new situations, inspiring creativity, lifting your mood, and even easing anxiety and depression. Professor Peter Felsman is a social scientist and improviser himself who has tested this spontaneous style of theater in the lab. Felsman explains how improv might cause these improvements, and others, like lessening social anxiety in children.
