REWIND! In 2024, ESPN's 30 for 30 Podcasts came out with a series called Searching for Hobey Baker, where they tell the story of one of America's greatest early athletes, and through letters and discussions with those who knew him, uncover his potential hidden sexual identity. In this episode, Madigan gives you the story of Hobey Baker; his life as an athlete, as a lover, as a fighter, and as a hero, and discusses the possibility of uncovering a person's sexuality posthumously. 1 Hour and 15 Minutes With David Nasternak and Alex Drain This Podcast Has a Sponsor: Michigan Law Grad Jonathan Paul is the guy with the C you want skating next to the ref and pleading your case. He's also a good guy to sit next to at the hockey games. Segment 1 Enjoy your retirement, Anže Kopitar. Kopitar was one of the most consistent and underrated players of his era. The Avs swept the Kings but lets recap some closer NHL matchups (NOT Sabres vs Bruins). The Oilers are underperforming with their star power, there are some fundamental issues within the program. Anyways, who's back for Michigan? Is Hage the favorite for the Hobey Baker award? There will be so much talent and you hope everyone can find their own niche because there's only one puck. Perron's still on the spreadsheet until he isn't. Garrett Schiftsky is going to be a dude going into next year. Slot Cole McKinney in as your 4th line center. Jack Nesbitt and Cameron Reid are coming in from the OHL. Expect JP Hurlbert to come in from the WHL. All four lines have depth and competition opportunities. Segment 2 Projecting the 2026-2027 defensive roster. Need Henry Mews to take on a huge role, but can he be an elite defenseman? Ben Robertson, Asher Barnett, Dakoda Rheaume-Mullen, and Drew Schock will give the team an unusually high amount of depth. Michigan might add one or two more players on defense to round out the roster. Expect Jack Ivankovic to remain the starter at goalie but Stephen Peck has at least earned some starts. This team should be stacked going into next season, but this time with more maturity. MUSIC NHL on ESPN Theme "We'll Meet Again" -- Vera Lynn Ice Hockey (NES) theme

Lane MacDonald is the Chief Investment Officer of SCS Financial, a registered investment adviser and OCIO platform with approximately $46 billion in assets under management. Lane was a U.S. Olympic hockey player and Hobey Baker award winner as the best player in college hockey in the late '80s, but his aspirations of following in his father's footsteps and playing in the NHL were derailed shortly thereafter by injuries. In the decades since, he spent a dozen years in private equity and the last eighteen as an allocator at institutions ranging from the Harvard endowment to the family office for the owners of Fidelity, and now SCS. Our conversation traces Lane's path from the rink to investing, and from dealmaker to allocator, examining what separates great investors from good ones. We discuss the importance of domain expertise, sector selection, alignment, and identification of a durable edge and structural alpha in increasingly efficient markets. We close with Lane's outlook on private markets and the lessons from hockey, endowments, and family offices that inform the team-oriented platform at SCS. Part 2 of All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories #078 Beer heir Grover Cleveland Bergdoll was an early adaptor to flight and it is his Wright Brothers biplane that suspends from the ceiling of the Franklin Institute. He was also the most notorious American Draft Dodger during the Great War. You met Hobart Amory Hare "Hobey" Baker in an earlier podcast when fellow guide Paul Sookiasian and I talked about his athletic prowess; I return now to discuss his life as a pilot, and add new information uncovered only last year by ESPN. Benjamin Lee II eagerly shipped off to be a flier before he finished his college days at Penn. His plane went down and his body never found. He has a cenotaph at Laurel Hill East.
Thaddeus Lowe is not buried at Laurel Hill, but has many connections there. He was an balloon aeronaut during the Civil War, thus father of the United States Air Force. Grover Cleveland Bergdoll's family is in a huge mausoleum at Laurel Hill West. An early student of the Wright brothers, he became a poster child for privilege when he dodged the draft during the Great War. Hobey Baker's athletic gifts made him a natural pilot, but he crashed and died on the day he was scheduled to return stateside. Benjamin Lee II eagerly awaited his opportunity for a dogfight, but he was killed during a training accident. Holger "Hold Your Horses" Hoiriis was a Danish American flyer who made history when he flew across the Atlantic with a paying customer. Jacques Louis Francine was an All-American boy who used his flying skills to explore wilderness regions of northern Canada. His wartime service was very impressive. Edgar Loftus was commanding officer at a European Air Base in the final days of the war when Hitler's Iron Eagle made a surprise landing at his base, but then perversely refused to surrender. Fold up your tray table, fasten your seatbelt, and get ready as we take off into the world of pilots at Laurel Hill.

Tyler, Liam, Rick and Dan sat down for a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio. The group had some fresh news to talk about as well as on Tuesday, the Oilers acquired Ike Howard from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Sam O'Reilly. They discussed their initial reactions to the deal, where The 2025 Hobey Baker award winner was the top player could fit in the lineup next season, and which centre he could fit best next to. They also talked about the mini youth movement that could be happening next season in Edmonton and what the expectations should be for young players like Howard and Matt Savoie. From there, they talked about whether or not they think Oilers GM Stan Bowman is done for the summer. There are rumblings that they still might be looking to upgrade their goaltending tandem. They also touched on the recent rumours that Darnell Nurse was asked to waive his no-movement clause but refused. Nurse himself threw cold water on it, but the guys still talked about the idea that he could be traded at some point. To wrap up the pod, they hit on the Calder Trophy odds and a few over/unders for some players who are joining new teams next season on Bet365. They also gave out their hot performers for the week which included the Blue Jays, a viral fight involving a former NHLer, the new CBA, and the zoo. Hosted on Acast. Hobey Baker was considered one of the very first American ice hockey stars, taking the sport to new heights in the early 20th century. Tragically, he died under mysterious circumstances while in military service during World War I. A new podcast from ESPN's 30 For 30, Searching for Hobey Baker, investigates his life, death, and identity as a gay man in early 20th century America. Executive producer Andy Reynolds joins us to discuss.*Kousha Navidar Hosts*
His Princeton glory days behind him, Hobey moves to New York and begins a job at JP Morgan Bank. A member of what would be called the Lost Generation, Hobey misses the adrenaline rush of his college sports stardom and becomes despondent. But he soon finds himself in the social circles of the flamboyant and extremely wealthy Percy Rivington Pyne 2nd, who invites Hobey to live with him in his Gilded Age Manhattan mansion. As WWI rages, Hobey arrives in France to prepare for aerial combat. He embraces being a fighter pilot, finding the adrenaline-fueled commonality between war and sports. While in Europe, Hobey exchanges dozens of affectionate and loving letters with Percy Pyne. And during his off-duty forays into Paris, Hobey experiences the city's lively cultural scene – including a reignited friendship with famed songwriter Cole Porter. After proving his combat valor in the air, Hobey – now a captain - receives his orders to return home, but he insists on taking one last flight. It would turn out to be his last one. After Hobey Baker makes his triumphant Princeton hockey debut against Williams, we travel back to his early days attending St. Paul's School in New Hampshire. He develops a reputation as both an athletic phenom and a kind, generous sportsman. After the economic crash of 1907, his father struggles to send him to college at Princeton where he becomes a two-sport star in football and hockey. After graduation, Hobey embarks on a summer motorcycle trip around Europe – a grand experience interrupted by the ominous clouds of conflict circling the continent. Learn more about your ad choices. Every hockey fan knows the name Hobey Baker - collegiate hockey's most prestigious trophy is named after him - but very few know the real story of this all-time great athlete. Using an archive of personal letters and source materials provided by the Mudd Library at Princeton University, as well as original research, the series charts Hobey's glory days as the best collegiate hockey and football player in the nation, his post-grad ennui in Gilded Age New York City, and his exploits as a WWI fighter pilot, which ended tragically in a mysterious crash in 1918. Beyond Hobey's adventures on the ice and in the air, this podcast also re-contextualizes the hockey legend through the lens of his lesser known struggles as a queer man in the early 20th century.
