Michigan State University Spartans Basketball Coach Tom Izzo met with the media on April 16 to discuss the state of the sport he loves and all of college athletics.Conversation Highlights:(0:00) – Tom's opening remarks. “We've created a bad system, and it's not specific to MSU. My biggest concern is that people are in the ears of the players all year. The portal is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. I'm worried about the kids; the pressure on them is enormous.”(10:24) – How do you manage the outside money? – “I'd love to have more transparency.”(16:44) – What keeps you doing this? – “I'm still living the dream.”(20:49) – Are these issues seeping down to the high schools?(25:06) – Talk about the departures of Gehrig Normand, Xavier Booker, and Tre Holloman.(31:48) – Are there conversations going on to try to change the system?(34:50) – Talk more about Jase Richardson.(39:26) – Is there an appetite among the players for more structure? – “There will be more unintended consequences.”(47:31) – What solutions would you suggest? And if nothing changes, where are we headed? – “I wish there was total transparency. And I wish coaches would respect each other more than I think we do.”(54:09) – How do you go about retaining your current players?(58:48) – Closing thoughts and Jud-isms.Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

HOT TAKES segment during the show if enough MGoBlog fans are there. Tickets. Things Discussed: Basketball big picture: they're a good team, though they've been more of a 10-seed than a 4-seed since January because they hit their ceiling. Strategy has stagnated but tactics are good, wins close games. Take Michigan in the 1st round vs a 12 or 13 because they won't have someone who can stop Vlad. Tre Donaldson needs to play better—ball is getting stuck in Wolf's hands, also Tre's defense has fallen off. Cason? Very high upside: defensive athleticism, #1 on the team at getting himself to the rack, shooting is just bad luck—big difference between his shots that circle the rim and Gayle's shots that barely touch it. But he's not going to be ready this year. During break: Craig uses the F-word. Is something wrong with Tre Holloman? Seth: If that guy played for us we'd love him. MSU floor-kissing: mostly nothing. Seth believes the rule should be whoever wins gets the midcourt/midfield logo. That game was over. Women's basketball: Michigan's playing five guards, the game has gotten much better, incredible what KBA did after her roster was gutted by the portal. They can stick with anyone in the country. Hockey: Need help. No bid stealers. Comfortable that one of the many Big Ten and Hockey East at-large teams will win their tournaments, need Arizona State to go out, need Quinnipiac to go out early enough not to pass Michigan or win their bid. Naurato: This won't be a problem again. What does he mean? Maybe he's going to raid Canada.

November 30, 2023: On Tuesday evening, Michigan State played the Georgia Southern Eagles from the Sun Belt Conference and did exactly what we hoped they would do - win easily. This game was really never in doubt but there were definitely some very interesting story lines that came from the game. The top story was that AJ Hoggard was replaced in the starting lineup with Tre Holloman. And Tre responded well finishing with 7 points on 2-4 shooting and 10 assists to just 2 turnovers. Jeremy Fears Jr. spelled Tre and also played significant minutes to finish with 6 points and 10 rebounds including a few assists. Although ultimately AJ played the most minutes, it will be interesting to see where Izzo goes moving forward with respect to the role, rotation, and minutes for AJ. Are you looking for collegiate apparel including Spartan gear? There's only one place we recommend you go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. (https://www.nudgeprinting.com) Nudge is owned and operated by Gabe and Brittany, two MSU alums. The business is operated out of Michigan and screen prints super high quality products. They also have a large assortment of apparel for other schools as well as stickers for your wall, car, or computer. If you have a home in Michigan you know the importance of clearing water efficiently away from your home off the roof. Unfortunately, the outdoor beauty of Michigan means you have to deal with leaves and debris that pile up in your gutters. Sometimes, those gutters also can't keep up with the rain or leave puddles by your foundation. If you live in the Grand Rapids area (Muskegon to Saugatuck to Rockford to Lowell) contact Kurt Stauffer at the Brothers that Just Do Gutters. (https://www.brothersgutters.com/grand-rapids-mi/). If you're anywhere in the metro Detroit area the Brothers have you covered too! (https://www.brothersgutters.com/metro-detroit-mi/). They are real professionals who will clean, repair, or replace your gutters and protect your home quickly and efficiently with friendly service. Mention Final Four to get 10% off your gutter work. #MSUHoops #MichiganStateBasketball #MichiganState #GeorgiaSouthern

November 19, 2023: Capping what was a very good weekend for MSU sports fans with a basketball victory over Butler Friday night, the football team winning a road game, the MSU hockey team sweeping #1 Wisconsin, and the Lions coming from behind to climb to 8-2 on the season, the win over Alcorn State was icing on the cake. The Spartans were without leading scorer Tyson Walker but didn't need him as Tre Holloman had a career high 17 point behind 5/5 shooting from 3 to go along with five assists and 1 turnover and 2 steals. Aside from Tre's 3s came the highlight dunk of the season by Coen Carr who posterized a hapless Brave by going through him for a two handed dunk on his head.  This was a game Michigan State needed to gain some confidence and maintain their focus which they largely did. You can also buy our merchandise to sport around town where all the sales proceeds go to support the show. October 29, 2023: Well, if you attended the game or watched it on TV, you would be excused for not realizing that the 89-88 last second loss to Tennessee at the Breslin wasn't a regular season game. Aside from the first 6 minutes of the game where the Vols leapt out to a 17-1 lead, the game felt every bit like the even and hard nosed game we anticipated. Although, there was no disqualification from 5 fouls, the game otherwise felt like any other game except that it was two extremely physical and skilled teams. The Spartans never led the game but pushed Tennessee throughout and tied it with under 5 seconds on a 3 from AJ Hoggard. Unfortunately, a foul was soon called on Tre Holloman leading to the Vols splitting a pair of free throws to win the game by one. Are you looking for Spartan gear? The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.

September 4, 2023: Head coach Ben Johnson and the Minnesota Gophers are coming off of a statistically historically poor season. Out of 351 division-1 teams, the Gophers rated 235 in KenPom which was easily the worst in Big Ten. This is following a relatively successful year for a team that was cobbled together by Johnson with mostly transfers. Unfortunately for the Gophers, their weak roster was plagued by injuries to their star players - Dawson Garcia and Jameson Battle. The mild magic that occurred the year before (although Minnesota still didn't win a lot of conference games) was now gone and they only managed two wins in the league. Toughest yet is that Johnson and the Gophers continue to struggle to keep Minnesota talent from escaping the state and heading to other programs. Michigan State got Tre Holloman, Duke got Paulo Banchero, and the list goes on. So this year Minnesota is again faced with a challenging roster that has some unknown potential. Unfortunately for them, they will be without Jameson Battle and Ta'lon Cooper who have transferred out. Are you looking for Spartan gear? August 16, 2023: 6' 2" sophomore point guard Tre Holloman had a very solid freshman year playing nearly 9 minutes a game as a backup to AJ Hoggard. He was solid defensively and good protecting the ball with nearly a 2.5:1 assist to turnover ratio. Not relied upon to score last year, almost certainly we can expect to see him contribute more on the offensive side of the ball this year. Tre has been working on his shot and handle over the off season and those who went to Moneyball saw his improved confidence and three point shot. With the addition of Jeremy Fears as a another point guard there is a good chance that we will see Tre playing backup as both a one and two. Holloman also gave us his impression of Izzo showing up at his football practices in high school and comparing Minneapolis to East Lansing. Did you see Holloman's NIL hot dog commercial? October 17, 2022: Our final Big Ten Preview installment is the most important - the Michigan State Spartans. We finished our annual preseason deep dive on each player, things to watch, and predictions for the year. Exiting this year are Gabe Brown, Marcus Bingham, Max Christie, and Julius Marble. New players are freshmen Jaxon Kohler, Tre Holloman, Carson Cooper and grad transfer Jason Whitens (who was on the team last year but tore his ACL in the exhibition opener against Ferris State.) Last year, the Spartans were fantastic shooting the 3 but uncharacteristically struggled to rebound the basketball and defend in the post. That contributed to their #42 overall KenPom ranking as they had one of the worst defensive rankings for an MSU team since 2006. Unfortunately, a lot of areas in which MSU needed improved play just didn't materialize last year. The team just didn't seem to gel and figure out their roles until perhaps the last two weeks of the year - just in time for the Big Ten tournament and NCAA tourney. The most obvious question this year is what will happen at the 5 spot with the departures of Bingham and Marble. The spartans will have to rely on foul-prone Mady Sissoko and a pair of true freshmen in Kohler and Cooper to try and get by. If that spot struggles, it might be a very long year our guys as the Big Ten still have a lot of teams with good centers. The other big question is can players like Akins and Brooks elevate their game and become big time contributors. Rod and Eric take the deep dive to prepare yourself for the season to come.
