POPULARITY
Two wins against UCLA and Ohio State keep the Spartans at 22-5, but this episode earns its soul not from the wins themselves — the UCLA game was a blowout and the Ohio State game was an officiating drama wrapped around a Bruce Thornton highlight reel — but from the questions underneath: whether Kohler's foul trouble and shooting coldness is a problem that follows them to Mackie, whether Fears can finally become the guy Izzo is still waiting for, and whether Carson Cooper's career performance against Ohio State is a new floor or just a good day. Mick Cronin provides the comic relief, the Naismith committee provides the outrage, and Plum once again is right about Jeremy Fears being maddeningly inconsistent, even in a win.
Jeremy Fears has never done anything wrong
Xavier find a new way to break our hearts: overtime! We get into Xavier's struggles in close games and the reasons why. We also discuss the triumvirate of college basketball malfeasance: Jeremy Fears, Jon Scheyer, and Charles Bediako, as well as Darryn Peterson hating basketball and Pope Leo absolutely loving it.
Does Jeremy Fears' controversy outweigh his talent?
Valenti and Rico dished on the one team out of the ones with the shortest odds to win the Super Bowl that could actually win it next year. Then, they touched on the Jeremy Fears controversy before rounding out the hour with more Brad Holmes/Lions talk.

#5 Illinois falls at #10 Michigan State 85-82 in overtime. Mike Carpenter discusses the loss, the team's first since December 13, and the positives to take away despite the outcome. While Keaton Wagler struggled mightily from the field, David Mirkovic and Andrej Stojakovic picked up the offensive slack. Unfortunately, there was no answer for Jeremy Fears, who dropped 26 points and 15 assists. Next up: Wisconsin on Tuesday.

No Sam today. Dusty shirt is maize; get it before we play MSU again. Things Discussed: Men's & Women's Basketball win at Breslin: 40 basketball wins. Jeremy Fears's instant karma for his dirty play. Impossible not to see all the extra stuff that guy does when you rewatch the games: yankbacks, pulldowns, more trips. Ira counted 80 yards in penalties and a targeting. MSU game: Brilliant defensive first half, all MSU could do consistently was get to the free throw line. Calling out their dirty play goes right to their heart because it's the best thing they can do. Going 2-3 zone out of halftime made good tactical sense but ball betrayed them a bit, good resilience to fight back. More tactics: Michigan was getting it down to Mara but he's not big enough on the block to make that. McKenney love: He's played his way to Michigan's best two—Burnett and Gayle are losing minutes to him. Anticipates screens, is big, and his midrange pullups are a good floor for possessions that help you against an elite defense. Really important for what this team needs to be going forward. Who's M's best draft pick? We'd take Morez. Who's the best five? Depends on opponent and context. Might not play Mara vs a 5-out team, can go three bigs against an MSU-like opponent. Who's the best team in the Big Ten? Illinois. They go to Breslin and host Michigan but the rest of their schedule are the mids Michigan already played, they got the best player in the league from the composite 250s in Wagler—worst scouting miss in history? Hope Underwood calls out MSU's assist lies so Wagler gets his laurels for his real assists. Michigan next year? Might only have to replace Yaxel (McKenney and Cason take Gayle and Burnett minutes), can go to the portal for a difference-maker and run it back. Penn State preview: They have Mingo back but Yuric played out of his mind last time and think he's not coming back from a 103-degree fever on Saturday to play like that again. Have a bunch of questionable guys tonight. Think University Park atmosphere is similar to Saline 7th Grade Middle School game. WEAR PINK (I can't; I don't have any). What's the reverse Dusty May for Izzo? Sing he's a jolly good fellow, or bring out the newspapers. Hockey: MSU series could be for the conference since Wisconsin is wilting and Penn State just lost McKenna to a bar fight. Michigan needs to get more than a split because MSU has Minnesota, Notre Dame, and Ohio State left, and Michigan still has to play the other contenders. Put me down for this: Mick Cronin is going to complain about Michigan buying players when he comes to Ann Arbor. Craig says he'll dog his own players.

Men's Basketball vs Michigan State Starts at 0:51 Where's Tre Holloman at?? Michigan's first victory at Breslin since 2018. They managed to blow all of their 16 point halftime lead but only briefly. This year didn't have the same "helplessness" vibe of previous years. The grifting from Jeremy Fears was incredible. Michigan State's offense ended up being generating bogus calls and then hitting free throws. Their roster doesn't have the best athletes in the world but they have guys that have stuck around for a while. Trey McKenney is becoming a much bigger piece of this team, if Michigan goes on a tournament run it could be because he steps up as a major contributor. Is he the 6th man? They're running a lot of offense through Mara, maybe that should be going through Morez Johnson instead. Michigan is back to #1 in Kenpom and is projected to win the Big Ten outright but the end of the schedule is very tough. 2. Men's Basketball vs Nebraska Starts at 29:17 The vibes here were considerably worse! Nebraska was getting an alarming amount of open looks. Michigan wins by shooting what felt like 70% from two. Some of Cadeau's turnovers were just inexplicable. We can't pronounce Berke's name so he's just Berke Boyband. The studies say that every conspiracy theory you have about officiating is true. Pass blocking is not actually allowed in basketball. Nebraska is legit, this was a tough game that Cadeau almost gave away. Shout out to Fred Hoiberg for coming in with a great gameplan for confusing Michigan. The overturn on the challenge made no sense, how was that possibly clear? Should Michigan be going inside more when the threes aren't dropping? Michigan was missing open threes. They beat a top 10 Kenpom team while shooting 23% from three, that's impressive no matter what. Was LJ Cason unplayable? 3. Hot Takes and Hockey vs Ohio State Starts at 52:18 Takes hotter than Yaxel Lendeborg at the free throw line. Michigan gets five of six points over Ohio State in a frustrating manner. Stephen Peck played a great game on Saturday until the last five minutes. They're missing points here and there against teams that they're better than. Wisconsin somehow went from #1 to might miss the tournament. Michigan State is only one point behind in the Big Ten rankings. 4. Gimmicky Top Five Sports Villains Starts at 1:14:40 We're born haters so it's time for a gimmicky top five sports villains. There are a surprising number of ways to define "villain" in this context. There's a lot of NHL discourse because you used to just get paid to hurt people. Which Big Ten commissioners make the list (spoiler: all of them). Not posting spoilers here but yes there is a certain Wisconsin basketball player. Who's on your list? MUSIC: "Moody"—Royel Otis "Silver Joy"—Damien Jurado "Sweet and Dandy"—Toots and the Maytals “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra
In the latest episode of Steady Droppin Dimes, Sam Webb and Tim McCormick discuss the upcoming Michigan vs. Michigan State basketball game, highlighting the intense rivalry and the physical nature of the matchup. Before looking ahead, they reflect on Michigan's recent victory over Nebraska, underscoring the Wolverines' resilience, Nebraska's impressive performance, and Michigan's struggles with three-point shooting and perimeter defense. Turning to the Spartans matchup, they emphasize Michigan's frontcourt battle, particularly Yaxel Lendeborg, and the need for him to turn in a big-time performance against Michigan State's tough defense. They also break down the point guard matchup between Elliot Cadeau and Jeremy Fears, while stressing the need for Michigan to improve its transition game. Finally, Tim predicts a close game with Michigan winning by one point. We opened with a good conversation with noted MSU basketball parent Jeff Kohler, father of the Spartans' Jaxon Kohler — on this MSU team, Jaxon's development, his relationship with the fan base and more (beginning at the 9:00 mark). Then we picked this weekend's NFL playoff games and College Football Playoff championship, along with some other best bets (51:30). Plus, for the final 90 minutes, answers to your questions on MSU basketball — on Coen Carr, Jordan Scott, Jeremy Fears, the rotation and starters — and on MSU football recruiting, the Lions, life and more (1:06:00).
Josh, Dustin, and Raul break down Duke's gusty 66-60 win over Michigan State in the Breslin Center. Topics discussed include: Caleb Foster being the lead guard Duke needs in big games How Foster has separated himself from Cayden Boozer right now Cameron Boozer rallying to score 16 second-half points after hearing vulgar chants Nik Khamenia's big contributions from 3pt range and as a rebounder The defensive adjustments Duke made to slow down the two-man action between Jeremy Fears and Jaxson Kohler The legitimacy of Cam Boozer's fourth and fifth fouls Coach Scheyer's decision to switch to zone after Cam Boozer picked up his fourth foul Fears being held to 0-10 shooting after egging on the crowd What it means for this team to be sitting at 10-0 right now versus such a tough schedule The late-game execution and resolve shown by this team vs. last year's Possible concerns about free throw and 3pt shooting What they want to see from Duke over this upcoming extended break Then they wrap up the pod with a brief discussion of Duke Football's huge win over Virginia to win the ACC Championship. We dug into our takes and yours – on Michigan State basketball, whether the time is now to go after a national championship, on Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper, Jaden Akins and Jeremy Fears, on Jase Richardson's future and NCAA tournament seeding, on Michigan basketball, the Big Ten tournament, on MSU hockey and more.

Things Discussed: Hoops: We are still fascinated by Mick Cronin, even as he turns a top-25 road win into just another bottom-of-the-B1G team. Wolf back next year? Musselman clearly trying to talk NBA into existence, but NBA is listening. Big Ten MBB looks like a Michigan-Michigan State race with Purdue and Illinois on the 2nd tier, though Illinois can beat anybody—they're weird because they rely on the three. Brian: MSU is a better shooting team than they look: Akins is at least, and they hit free throws. Craig: MSU is really good, unbeatable when Izzo can browbeat the refs into letting them be handsy. Counter: they don't take many threes, with three primary players on the court non-shooters: using Jaxon Kohler as a shooter, using Jeremy Fears as a shooter, Xavier Booker as a shooter. Booker is a frustrating guy, more evidence that Izzo doesn't develop guys. It's also weird that Frankie Fidler hasn't been that good, and Calipari turned Johnnell Davis into a bench player. Shoutout to Dusty May, and what he's done with Nimari Burnett. Seth: he's not the 5-star Texas Tech thought they were getting; he's the guy Alabama thought they were getting. It's about anticipation; the game is coming to him so slowly. Brian: He's Bobby Hull! We eat crow for saying the two big lineup won't work—in our defense… https://twitter.com/EvanMiya/status/1879650374128447983 During break: Effort to bring Brandon Graham to Michigan; now he's going to keep playing. The guys do math. Speaking of Eat Crow: Wink Martindale NFL interest? Sam says they'll have to pay him; Seth says someone will because he's too good of an idea for an NFL team: NYG are 28th in DVOA and blitzy/1-high again with out him, meanwhile he's beating OSU with QQH. He's the guy who invented the most popular defense in the league, regardless if people want to claim Mac and Minter's defenses are "Fangio-style." But they're going to have to commit to him: he's not taking a pay cut. Michigan would have to put an extension in front of him as well.

Basketball After TCU Starts at 1:00 Gee golly willickers that was a lot of turnovers. Michigan's team of point guards has none, unless you want to call Danny Wolf the point. Weird game where they turned the ball over 16 times, most of those steals, and still led at the half because when they do get a shot it's always at the rim or an open look from three. How to get Goldin involved? He's not really into the game, not just on his teammates not seeing him, but it's that as well. Walters is the most efficient offensive player in CBB but he's playing the same position as Wolf. Trying to figure out how the lineup shakes out because we're not going to have an eleven-man rotation all year. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Big Ten Basketball Preview: The Bottom Nine to Kenpom Starts at 29:14 Washington: Great Osobor was a great portal pickup but they can't keep C Franck Kepnang healthy. Rice transfer Mekhi Mason and NoDak transfer Tyree Ihenacho are uptransfers who had high usage at the 3 and 2, Butler transfer DJ Davis doesn't really do to for us either. Injuries already. Predicted finish: 18th. USC: They got Terrance Williams and they're all Terrance Williamses: 6'7” guys who can shoot save for “PG” Desmond Claude. Already injured. Projected finish: 16th. Minnesota: Speaking of injuries already; Year 4 for Johnson is another Year Zero after the guy they spent on in the portal got hurt. Seth likes (and pronounces) Lu'Cye Patterson at PG, and we all respect Dawson Garcia, but with their only other returner being carried off the court it could be rough. Predicted finish: 17th. Nebrasketball: Welcome to The Great Mid: Every basketball team from here on save Purdue is ranked closely together. Close loss to St Mary's in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Injury to stretch 5 Rienk Mast really hurts them. We like Brice Williams and Juwan Gary, think Rollie Worster from Utah is a decent PG, but lost too much to make the tournament. Predicted finish: 15th. Rutgers: This is where I'm mad about the Kenpom format. Two top-5 freshmen join a very good backcourt of Williams and Derkack, but the loss of their center looms large. Problem is spacing. Predicted finish: 5th. Northwestern: Respectable loss at Dayton (71-66) and nonrespectable OT win vs #324 Eastern Illinois. No more Boo, and you can't make Ty Berry into that guy. Matthew Nicholson is a truck driver, Brooks Barnhizer has a bad stache, Nick Martinelli will have to drive the team. True freshman PG? Ew. Predicted finish: 12th. Iowa: Payton Sandfort is going to have to shoot, and shoot he shall. Josh Dix is going to have to take on a lot more usage unless Brock Harding can learn to score. Will be bad on defense but mid their way to wins with Owen Freeman the latest yucky C. Predicted finish: 13th. Michigan State: What are they doing in this section? It's a very Izzo team, with no idea what they're doing at C because nobody gets developed, and nobody making threes. But they do have athletes and Izzo will make them play defense. Frankie Fidler from Neb-Omaha was the top transfer in the conference, Jaden Akins and Jeremy Fears have talent. They'll be…MSU. Predicted finish: 5th, deservedly 8th. Maryland: I don't know any of these guys –Brian. Julian Reese at center you know. They're heavily reliant on a #12 overall Derik Queen, a one-and-done at the wing, but that's working so far, got a 4-point loss to Marquette out of him. Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Selton Miguel are a decent backcourt. Very mid. Predicted finish: 11th. 3. Big Ten Basketball Preview: The Top Nine to Kenpom Starts at 1:01:27 Penn State Way high at #34 due to a win over (very bad, no PG) Virginia Tech. Ace Baldwin is the latest PG who carries them, though there's some upside in Tennessee transfer Freddie Dilione. Predicted finish: 14th. Oregon is also rated too highly. Altman gets the kinds of guys who get rated for NBA purposes but makes decent teams out of them. C Nate Bittle and SF TJ Bamba are good enough to carry them, got an efficient PF from Stanford and upgraded PG Jackson Shelstad to a sophomore, so they're mid. Predicted finish: 10th. Indiana got some decent portal pickups but let's say it again: no shooting! We like former 5-star Stanford transfer Kanaan Carlyle and PG Myles Rice from P12, Oumar Ballo is 5-star from Zona to rim protect. So athletic, so little shooting. Predicted finish: 9th. Michigan 6th. Wisconsin: Back to being extremely Wisconsin including a 103-88 win vs Zona that featured a parade of whistles. Steven Crowl is now a point center extraordinaire, Nolan Winter is the next 6'11” shooter and rebounder, John Blackwell, Max Klesmit, and former CSU guard John Tonje can all play but not well enough to go to the NBA. PG Camren Hunter injury could set them back. Predicted finish: 4th. Ohio State: Led the year off with a win over Texas and a closs loss at A&M. Kept Bruce Thornton out of the draft and got back Meechie Johnson from a two-year lease to South Carolina. Added bigs from UK and Duke so maybe they can defense their way through the season. Predicted finish: 7th. Illinois: Only returning starter is burlyguard Ty Rodgers but they picked up two internationals who are Working Out: see threeing the hell out of Bama in a surprising road win. Ivisic is a 5-star little bro of the UK/Arkansas one, Kasparas Jakucionis is a lottery pick, Evansville transfer ben Humrichous is a stretch 4 with range, and backup PG from Zona Kylan Boswell and L'vile transfer Tre White have evident talent. Upgraded to predicted finish: 2nd. UCLA: Have a loss to New Mexico (not too bad and UCLA shot 5/23). Might be a defensive nightmare. Got Eric Dailey who we wanted, also Tyler Bilodeau, an Iggy like PF. Skyy Clark is not a good basketball player but Mick Cronin manages to win in ways Brian hates. Predicted finish: 3rd. Purdue: Matt Painter is the best coach in CBB. Braden Smith it turns out is much better than “guy who lobs it to Edey.” They found three more huge centers, though none are 7'4”, and the new freshman Gicarri Harris fits right in, looks like a find. Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn round out the most complete roster in the league. Predicted finish: distant 1st. 4. Hot Takes and Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:36:13 Guys I want to get this out: you know the scores. Northwestern shot themselves in the foot, MSU has no pass rush, Purdue is dead as a door nail, Washington-UCLA is how we learned UCLA lost their 4th eligible year of a starting quarterback to being the holder in 2021. Jeremy Fears Sr., the father of Michigan State standout Jeremy Fears Jr. and Oklahoma's latest recruit Jeremiah Fears, joins DeJuan Marrero and Co-Host Myron Jenkins to share his experience in helping both sons reach Division 1. He discusses the differing paths of Jeremiah and Jeremy, as well as how he has managed to keep his family close-knit.
On this episode I got my fellow MSU supporter Tyler back on the show to recap everything that took place during MSU's foreign trip out in Spain. We talked Jeremy Fears' return, Coen Carr's impact, Jaden Akins' struggles plus much more. Tap in
