When the British captured Philadelphia, the seat of the American Congress, in September of 1777 General Howe delivered a decisive blow to American morale.  A month later, Howe tried to consolidate his gains with an attack on the American fortification on the Delaware River at Fort Mercer, now Red Bank, New Jersey,  and across the river at  Fort Mifflin.  The Americans not only repulsed the attack by a combined British & Hessian force, but in the process destroyed 64-gun ship HMS Augusta, the largest ship the British lost during war.  We talk about this with historian James McIntyre, analyst of the Delaware campaign, editor of the Seven Years War Association Journal,  and biographer of Hessian officer Johann-Ewald.

London is deeply divided in 1779 over courts martial of top naval officers and Parliamentary hearings with General Howe and Burgoyne over the loss of the army at Saratoga.  Irish militia also hold demonstrations over war-related trade restrictions. Politicians in London begin turning toward plans to cut their losses and end the war in America.  Only King George III seems to remain rigidly against independence.  He uses his influence to keep war hawks in power and encourage continuation of the war effort. “If old England is not by this lesson taught humility, then she is an obstinate old slut, bent upon her ruin.” This is the story of 1777. Playboy and playwright "Gentleman Johnny" is leading a Canadian-based invasion of upstate New York (seriously, why are those Canadians so militaristic?). It's a tale of egos. From Gentleman Johnny to the American side, a lot of dudes are looking out for "number one." The outcome of Gentleman Johnny's invasion helps Ben Franklin score a full-on military alliance avec la France. Meanwhile, George Washington throws down with General Howe in PA. George loses battles; Howe loses his dog. George is also about to throw down with haters in military leadership and Congress. He'll do so while facing the harsh cold at Valley Forge.

In the aftermath of France's entry into the war, Great Britain's resources were stretched thin. General Howe's replacement, Henry Clinton, could not be everywhere at once, so he evacuated Philadelphia to consolidate his forces in New York City. As the British marched across New Jersey, George Washington moved to intercept them. The two columns met at Monmouth Court House and fought for nearly an entire day in hot and humid weather. While for all intents and purposes this was draw, Washington demonstrated that he could continue to frustrate British efforts. Rather than continue the campaign in the northeast, the British chose to move south, which will be the topic of our next episode. Questions? Contact us at americawarpodcast@gmail.com. In the mind of General Howe and his subordinates, 1777 offered another opportunity to end the rebellion in the thirteen colonies. In spite of a sound plan to cut off New England with a pincer movement from Canada and New York City, Howe's plans were derailed with his move to Pennsylvania. While he was successful in capturing the city, the Continental Army survived to fight another day. Moreover, his insistence on moving south deprived John Burgoyne's advance from Canada of mutual support. If you like this episode, please write a review on ITunes. Questions, comments, and concerns?
