In today's sermon, Apostle Alfred Williams calls the church into deeper hunger for the Holy Spirit, urging believers to worship with full focus—hearts engaged, distractions shut out—so the Word isn't stolen from us (cf. Mark 4:15). He teaches that spiritual gifts are not casual add-ons, but are pursued with clean hearts and genuine desire: “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts” (1 Corinthians 14:1). From Romans 12:1–2, he explains that living as a holy sacrifice and renewing the mind are not optional extras—they position us to discern God's will and move in the prophetic chambers with clarity, purity and power. Apostle then breaks down the purpose and advantage of tongues: when a believer speaks in tongues, they speak directly to God, uttering mysteries in the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2), building themselves up while their spirit prays (1 Corinthians 14:4, 14–15). He charges the church to pray both in the Spirit and with understanding, and to seek interpretation—because tongues with interpretation becomes prophecy that strengthens, encourages, and comforts the church (1 Corinthians 14:3; Ephesians 6:18; Jude 1:20).
We Do Weird with Katie Campbell, who will be speaking on The Gift of Prophecy.
In today's sermon, Apostle Alfred Williams teaches that the outpouring of the Spirit was promised for all God's people—so that sons and daughters would prophesy (Joel 2:28). He explains that prophecy is not guesswork or hype, but mysteries revealed by the Holy Spirit—often through dreams and visions—and he anchors this in Jesus' words that the Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth and tell us what is yet to come (John 16:12–13). This sermon is also a sober correction: believers must stop chasing “a word” from people, and learn to hear God for themselves, because a Church that cannot discern will be easily misled and frustrated. Apostle then opens up the gift of tongues and its purpose: when you speak in tongues you speak to God, uttering mysteries in the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2), and you edify (build up) yourself—strengthening your faith and spiritual authority (1 Corinthians 14:4; Jude 1:20). He urges believers to pray in the Spirit and in understanding (1 Corinthians 14:15; Ephesians 6:18), and to seek interpretation, because tongues with interpretation becomes prophecy—meant to strengthen, encourage, and comfort the Church (1 Corinthians 14:3).

What if God still speaks today—not distantly, but personally—and invites us to hear His voice for the sake of others? In this episode, we explore 1 Corinthians 14 and the gift of prophecy as a Spirit-led practice meant to strengthen, encourage, and comfort, challenging us to listen, test, and boldly share what God may be saying to build up His people.

The gift of prophecy might be one of the more controversial in the list of spiritual gifts in Romans 12. Pastor Shirk begins breaking down each of the spiritual gifts in this message.
The gift of prophecy isn’t exactly about telling the future. Rusty extrapolates, with scripture, what this gift of the Spirit really is.

Jase, Al, and Zach reflect on Phil's uncanny ability to see through people, often calling out the truth before anyone admitted it, and how that instinct shaped the way he raised his sons. The Office of A Prophet Versus the Gift of Prophecy One is an ordained office; the other is a gift all believers can grow in. The purpose of the gift of prophecy/giving a prophetic word is to bring people closer to the Father. • 1 Cor. 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. • 1 Cor. 14:3 But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, encouragement and comfort. • 1 Cor. 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. • 1 Cor. 14:5 I wish you all would speak with tongues, but even more that you prophesy… • 1 Cor. 14:31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. • Acts 2:17 & 18 … and they shall prophesy. We are all called to prophesy, but we are not all called to be prophets. (15) Different Spiritual gifts: Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12:7 & 8 Office of a Prophet: Eph. 4:11 & 12, & 1 Cor. 12:28 Purpose for the office of a prophet: to equip, tell of things to come, warn of danger, to correct How to tell if someone is a true prophet: 1. Acknowledged as a prophet by church leader 2. Have high levels of authority & great humility 3. Speak about things that will come to pass 4. Predictions come to pass 5. Word aligns with the Word of God 6. Consistent Christlike character in their lives 7. Message glorifies God not themselves 8. Warn people of sin and judgment 9. Strong voice for justice/righteousness 10. Quick, accurate judgments 11. Great discernment 12. Don't want public attention (3) Levels of operation in the prophetic gifting: • Ministering in the prophetic out of someone else's anointing. Saul did this when he was in the company of prophets. 1 Samuel 19:20-24 If you are under a prophet, and you honor that prophet, you are going to prophesy under their anointing. Saul was not a prophet, but under the influence of the prophet Samuel he prophesied correctly. • Ministering under the gift of prophecy All believers are called to do this. 1 Cor. 14:1-12 • Office of a Prophet Eph. 4:11-13

What does this teach us about prophecy in the church?Prophecy existsNT Prophecy does not stand equally with the Scriptures.NT Prophecy is for: Edification & Strength, Conviction, Comfort, Bold ProclamationWe need to be extreme careful with the gift of prophecyEarnestly Desire Prophecy: 1 Corinthians 14:1 “Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.” Because prophecy helps us understand the Lordship of Jesus more clearlyBecause prophecy is a good gift that God gives to bless His ChurchBecause prophecy is a way that we can be used by God in a meaningful waySo,Pray God would give you the gift of prophecyPray that God would give others the gift of prophecy for the building up of the churchPursue prophecy by prayerfully opening yourself up to receive the gift, with humble willingness to fail as you learn. Our church is a safe space.Remember the NT gift of prophecy is about Jesus, not you.
In this message, we dive into the gift of prophecy—what it is, how it operates, and how believers can grow in it. From Scripture, we see how prophecy edifies, exhorts, and comforts, and we learn the difference between those who prophesy and the office of the prophet. Be encouraged to pursue spiritual gifts, grow in maturity, and become part of a prophetic church that glorifies God. In this informative episode, Dr. Ray interviews Dr. Janie Miner, who has been called as a prophet to the local church. 1 Corinthians 14:21-40 - The Gift of Prophecy and Tongues by Calvary Chapel Irmo
The gift of prophecy is one of the most misunderstood topics in Christianity. Many believe prophecy is future-telling or speaking secret truths of God. However, Scripture defines the gift of prophecy as God equipping someone to share the truths of the Gospel for the purpose of “edification, exhortation, and consolation” (1 Corinthians 14:3).
The Bible says to “desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy” (1 Cor 14:1). Why? Because prophecy builds up, speaks truth in love, and reveals the heart of God to both believers and unbelievers. In week 2 of our SuperNormalNatural series, we explore why prophecy is called “the greatest gift” and how it empowers the Church to move in love, truth, and supernatural clarity. God is still speaking—and He wants to speak through you.
