Katie Campbell is the President and CEO of RedRover, a national animal welfare nonprofit organization based in Sacramento, California. Campbell assumed this role in March 2024. Campbell has been with RedRover for eight years, previously serving as the Director of Collaboration and Outreach. In this role, she supported the organization's outreach, awareness, and capacity-building efforts, particularly for their domestic violence assistance programs. She is passionate about animal welfare and has a strong background in the nonprofit sector. Campbell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Lees-McRae College and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology from California State University, Sacramento. Since 1987, RedRover has been a lifeline for animals in need. As a national animal welfare nonprofit, we're there for animals during emergencies, disasters, and times of crisis. Our three programs work together to provide comprehensive support: RedRover Relief offers grants for emergency veterinary care, including the Safe Housing and Purple Leash Project, which helps domestic violence survivors and their pets escape abusive situations. RedRover Responders, known as the "Red Cross for animals," deploys to disaster zones and rescues animals from puppy mills and hoarding cases. And through RedRover Readers, we're teaching the next generation about compassion and empathy. Join us to learn more about how RedRover is making a real difference for animals across the US and Canada. Web: https://redrover.org/ Mission: Our mission is to bring animals out of crisis and strengthen the bond between people and animals through emergency sheltering, disaster-relief services, financial assistance, and education. We accomplish this by engaging volunteers and supporters, collaborating with others, and maximizing the use of online technology. RedRover Relief: Offers pet parents grants and resources for animals in need of emergency veterinary care. Through this program, Safe Housing & Purple Leash Project (sponsored by Purina) grants also help domestic violence (DV) survivors escape abuse with their pets. Since 2012, RedRover has awarded 237 Safe Housing grants to shelters in 47 states, totaling more than $5.2 million. Additionally, Safe Housing grants have created the first pet-friendly domestic violence shelters in 10 states! We also created a collaborative project with Greater Good Charities' Rescue Rebuild program, called Dontforgetthepets.org (DFTP). This program helps domestic violence, homeless, and animal shelters create custom pet housing programs to fit the needs of their communities - everything from design and construction to policies and procedures. RedRover Responders: Known as the "Red Cross for animals," we temporarily shelter and care for animals displaced by natural disasters or animals rescued from puppy mills and hoarding cases. RedRover has deployed 280+ times since 1987, including to the Envigo beagle rescue, Hurricanes Katrina, Harvey, Ian, Superstorm Sandy, Camp and Caldor wildfires, Northridge earthquake, and many more. RedRover Readers: Helps children understand the emotional states of others and develop the skills needed for empathy to prevent animal cruelty and neglect. Hacks & Wonks Week in Review: Presidential Primary, Legislative Retirements, Police Recruitment in Seattle, Seattle Public Schools Board, and Burien Gets Sued Presidential Primary Takeaways  In this week's presidential primary, Trump and Biden secured enough delegates to clinch their parties' nominations. While Trump's impact worries moderate Republicans in Washington like Dave Reichert, Biden faces pressure from the "uncommitted delegates" protest vote demanding an end to violence in Gaza. Washington Legislative Retirements  Several longtime Democratic legislators, including Frank Chopp and Karen Keiser, announced their retirements after the recent session. This exodus provides an opportunity for a new generation of more progressive leadership. Police Recruitment in Seattle  The Seattle City Council discussed subsidizing housing and lowering standards to recruit more police officers amid a staffing shortage. However, mounting evidence and feedback from police suggest the culture within the department and lack of accountability are deterring recruits, not council rhetoric or compensation. Seattle Public Schools Board Appointments Seattle Public Schools is in the process of selecting two people to fill vacancies left by two departures from the Seattle Public Schools Board. Highlighting the diverse range of candidates, including labor leader Joe Mizrahi and Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce's Sarah Clark, the segment explored the potential policy implications and the importance of educational governance in the city. Sheriff Sues Burien Over Unconstitutional Anti-Camping Ordinance  Burien passed a stricter anti-camping law aimed at homeless individuals, which the King County Sheriff's Office refused to enforce as likely unconstitutional. In retaliation, Burien moved to defund the county's contracted police services, prompting criticism that it is escalating rather than solving homelessness. The WHEN DATING HURTS podcast has covered many facets of the domestic violence issue. But this one is new.  Abusers often have patterns of violence towards all members of a household including children and pets. It's difficult enough for the abused to find shelter for themselves. For that reason, many survivors stay in abusive homes for fear of subjecting their pets to continued abuse if left behind. And sometimes, it's not only abuse, it's torture or death. RedRover, established in 1987, sought to do something to bring animals out of crisis. Establishing your niche is one of the most important tasks of building your speaking business. Like all important tasks, this isn't a one-step process–it is a long journey of discovery and refinement. Because this is such a hot topic among our TSL students, our latest coaches' corner podcast naturally focuses on finding your niche. In Episode 457 of The Speaker Lab Podcast, TSL coaches Maryalice Goldsmith and Katie Campbell discuss how to figure out what your niche really is. If your niche is an onion, this episode is peeling back the layers so you can hone in on your target audience and book the gigs that are best suited to your expertise. The more you narrow your niche, the more you attract the attention of the right people. That's how successful speakers build momentum, as Katie and Maryalice explain on the show. No matter how broad you think your message is, you can amplify it best by finding the specific audience out there whose needs intersect perfectly with what you bring to the table. At the same time, finding your niche should not be a limiting experience. Many speakers mistakenly think they have to draw only from their on-paper experience to find a niche. But if your industry is over-saturated, there is probably a gap in the market where an unexpected audience really needs to hear what you have to say!Another limiting belief that many speakers unconsciously subscribe to is that your story determines your niche. Stories are a core part of who we are and any speaker's personal brand. While your story informs your talk, it does not have to define your niche. Speaking at its core is about solving problems, not selling stories. If you feel stuck in your attempts to drill down in your niche, reconsider whether you have let your story eclipse the solutions you offer. Chances are, reorienting your speaker brand around solutions and transformation will give you a boost and help you reach the right people. That's what Katie and Maryalice will walk you through in Episode 457! You'll also learn all about: What your “unique leverage point” is and how to find it. How to apply your experience to a drastically different field. Why your expertise matters more than your stories. How to choose stories that connect to your solutions. How getting clear on your niche helps you sell yourself on the phone. The importance of coaching and mentorship to overcoming imposter syndrome.…and so much more! When Bonnie's husband decided he wanted to possibly kill her, rather than, oh, we don't know, love and respect her, Bonnie knew she needed to run. But with a toddler, a three-day-old baby, two big dogs and a 30-pound tortoise in her care, finding a shelter that could help her proved nearly impossible. An estimated 70 percent of domestic violence survivors have pets, but only a fraction of domestic violence shelters have the resources available that allow pets to come with a survivor. As a result, survivors with pets stay an average of two years longer with dangerous, sometimes deadly, abusers, afraid to leave their animals behind. The nonprofit RedRover is hoping to change that, aiming to make at least 25% of shelters animal-friendly by 2025. In this episode, we hear from Bonnie (don't worry, her story has a happy-ish ending) and then from Katie Campbell, Director of Collaboration and Outreach for RedRover about their amazing efforts to make sure no pet is left behind. You might even want to consider signing up to be a volunteer (like Amanda did), support in some other way or apply for help. If you're a shelter that wants to become pet-friendly, check out DontForgetthePets.org for more info! Grassroots organizations around the country are currently helping to care for animals of survivors in danger, and your support would be amazing. Check out Praline's Backyard in Georgia, Hush Puppy Haven in Florida and Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in Arizona to start. (If you run a pet rescue org that helps DV survivors, give us a shout and we'll make sure to promote you on our socials!) Survivors in need can also check out the Animal Welfare Institute's Safe Havens mapping project which tracks all the safe havens where animals of DV victims could be fostered in times of crisis.
