Series: Beautiful Beatitudes | Part 3 by Justin Elson
Alice Han and special guest Ed Elson break down how Chinese investors are increasingly being shut out of America's hottest IPOs — even as China pours hundreds of billions into AI, robotics, and next-generation tech. They talk about the growing financial and technological divide between the U.S. and China, the Pentagon's decision to label companies like Alibaba, BYD, and Baidu as “Chinese Military Companies” and whether Washington and Beijing are entering a new era of financial decoupling. They also look at the big Chinese companies that could be next to IPO, and who China's Elon Musk might be. Plus: the growing worker backlash as AI transforms China's labor market. Recently, I sat down with my good friend James Iranzad (Gooseneck Hospitality) for a long-overdue catch-up, beginning with a piece that caught both our attention: Substance Abuse, a column by Ed Elson in the Simply Put newsletter. Elson's provocative thesis suggests that the dramatic decline in alcohol sales isn't primarily about health consciousness, GLP-1 drugs, or cannabis legalization — it's about screen addiction. Together, we broke down his argument, and discussed what it means for the hospitality industry.Next up: North America's 50 Best Bars returned to Vancouver last month, turning a spotlight on the city's growing international reputation as a beverage destination. What did the event mean for the local scene? Who showed up? And what does this continued investment in our city signal about where the global industry thinks we sit on the map? Then, we run through the results of the latest editions of Canada's 100Best Restaurants and the Vancouver MagazineAwards to talk about who made it, who moved up, and who got overlooked; as well as which patterns we're seeing across the lists — regionally, stylistically, and in terms of what the judges seem to be rewarding. Finally: Earlier this month, a temporary pop-up plaza was constructed next to Bells & Whistles in what appeared to be an accelerated timeline, prompting a report by CTV News. Iranzad gives his account of how the application came together, what the original vision was, and where the project actually landed.Midway through our discussion, James Langford-Smith (Pamplemousse Jus, June) calls in to fill us in about what's happening at the winery, and what consumers can look forward to from his latest vintage. This is a fun one as always. Do enjoy! If you have questions, observations, or ideas for future episodes, email at trackandfoodpod@gmail.com

"This is the LAPD. We're the most hated cops in all the free world. My own mama's ashamed of me. She tells everybody I'm a drug dealer." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your host A. J. Black is joined by brand new guest, host of spin-off AT THE MOVIES IN THE NOUGHTIES, Dev Elson, to look at the action buddy comedy from 1998, Rush Hour. The first of a hugely successful trilogy that cemented Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as one of the key buddy cop duo's of the late 20th century, Brett Ratner's film (and sequels) have nonetheless been questioned on several fronts in recent years, particularly from a racial perspective. But are they more inclusive and appreciated than people might expect? And what buddy movie lexicon are they part of? We find out! Plus, don't miss Tony and Dev next week over on ATMIT00s discussing the sequel, Rush Hour 2... Host / Editor A. J. A last minute replacement for the defaulted Northern Traverse by Ourea Events. If you've been following the ongoing discussions about the demise of one of the UKs biggest names in race organisation, you'll be fully aware of the fact that 2 phoenix's rose from the ashes. One being the Community Traverse and the other being the standalone race organised by Centurion.James talks about getting the race in place at short notice. The logistics of such an undertaking and how it went from an organisers point of view. We also talk about his personal experience doing the Sea 2 Sea himself in his own self supported style (other than a bit of help towards the end from Allie Bailey with a few gels and a sausage roll!)James confirms that Centurion will not be putting the S2S on again next year and he still confidently believes that someone will buy the NT and the other races and bring them back under new management. In this episode, Centurion Running founder James Elson joins the show to unpack one of the most complex moments in trail running right now.We examine the collapse of high-profile events like Dragon's Back and what it reveals about the economics of modern race organization - including rising operational costs, participant trends, and why certain race formats may no longer be sustainable. James also shares a behind-the-scenes look at how race directors actually think about pricing, no-show rates, and business viability. In the second half of the conversation, we turn to UTMB and its growing influence on the sport. We discuss the tradeoffs between scale and safety, the risks of removing qualification standards, and whether the current growth model is aligned with the long-term health of trail running. We also explore who is ultimately responsible for runner preparedness, the role of media and culture in shaping expectations, and whether UTMB is, for now, still a net positive for the sport.Partners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelMomentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order Kodiak Cakes - my favorite oatmeal and pancakes Support the show
