This weeks guest, Hugh Evans, is the CEO of Global Citizen. At 14, Australian-born Evans spent the night in a Manila slum. The harsh realities of his hosts' lives motivated Evans to challenge the status quo of extreme poverty. Following a trip to South Africa in 2002 as World Vision's inaugural Youth Ambassador, Evans worked on the Make Poverty History campaign and helped stage the Make Poverty History Concert (fronted by Pearl Jam and Bono). In 2011, under the mantle of the Global Poverty Project (launched 2008), Evans co-founded Global Citizen, and with it, the Global Citizen Festival -- a free, ticketed event requiring fans to perform anti-poverty actions in exchange for entry, recruiting millions into the war against global poverty. In 2015 alone, Global Citizens took 2.3 million actions, helping to secure commitments from governments around the world that are set to affect more than 210 million lives. In this episode we discuss the birth of Global Citizens, the power of education to change people's lives, How a night in the slums changed Hugh's perspective on life in addition to getting a Masterclass in Fundraising.

Whilst the event is being hosted from Central Park in New York, the 24-hour event will feature performances from top artists all over the world, including: Lagos, London, Los Angeles,  Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, Sydney and other locations.Back in May of this year Harry and Meghan acted as campaign chairs for Global Citizen's VAX LIVE: "The Concert to Reunite the World" in Los Angeles,  during which Harry appeared in person and Meghan by video conference. That event focused on driving a worldwide effort to equitably distribute the COVID-19 vaccines and treatments around the world.Prince Harry also spoke on the issue of vaccine equity when he recently presented the GQ Magazine Heroes Of The Year award to the entire team of dedicated scientists whose research led to the development of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID vaccine – notable a team almost entirely made up of women.Global Citizen was founded by Hugh Evans who from an early age was involved in humanitarian work with the World Vision organization. Hugh has in the past founded or operated other non-profit organizations including the Oaktree Foundation; Australia's first youth-run aid organization; and the Make Poverty History campaign in Australia. In 2008, with grants from the United Nations, Australian government and British government, Hugh co-founded the Global Poverty Project (GPP) an education and advocacy organization aiming to increase the number and effectiveness of people taking action to end extreme poverty. In 2011 Global Poverty Project worked alongside the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation to execute The End of Polio campaign. In August 2012, GPP launched the annual Global Citizen Festival. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic Global Citizen joined forces with the European Union to help finance COVAX which buy vaccines for countries who cannot afford them. The sharing of COVID vaccines is only part of Global Citizen's plans for the immediate and long-term future. In their 2021  white paper called “A Recovery Plan for the World – A Campaign to end COVID-19  for all and Kickstart the Global Recovery” Global Citizen sets out their five pillars of action for 2021 and beyond which are:Ending the COVID-19 pandemicStopping the hunger crisisResume learning for all childrenProtecting the planet and Promoting justice and equity for allGlobal citizen announced that for their part, Prince Harry and Meghan will join the 24-hour global broadcast event in New York City's Central Park, to continue their urgent work with other world leaders in the pursuit of global vaccine equity so as to end the COVID-19 pandemic for everyone, everywhere and,  hoping that the G7 countries and the European Union will commit to share at least 1 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses as well as calling on Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna to share their mRNA vaccine technology with the World Health Organization.Global Citizen founder Hugh Evans tweeted “We are honored that Prince Harry and Meghan, are coming to #GlobalCitizenLive in Central Park event." If you follow US politics even just slightly you will probably be surprised to learn that Congress actually did something last week. And deeper still, the action they took was broadly in the service of humanity.   Just after the July 4th holiday Congress passed the Global Food Security Act, which was a piece of legislation that will inform how the US government fights hunger worldwide.    My guest today, Judith Rowland was deep in the trenches of the years long effort to pass this bill. She is the US government relations lead for the Global Poverty Project and we spoke just a few hours before the passage of this bill.    Judith discusses what is contained in the bill, including the strengthening of a Obama administration program known as Feed the Future. And we also discuss how in such a polarized political environment, something like the Global Food Security Act could get passed.

Americans discard wearables after about three months because of a multitude of reasons. We discussed the ways that entrepreneurs can change this dynamic; we discussed how tech ventures are biased towards younger people; the average age at founding of billion-dollar businesses is just 31 years old, while CEOs commence their tenure at S&P 500 companies at 53; we introduce the three teenage entrepreneurs who have launched Thinkspace for schools and colleges, continuing our practice of saluting teenage entrepreneurs. Effective communication today, irrespective of whether you use snail mail, traditional media or new media, it is absolutely critical. We discus each of the 10 elements that are absolutely essential for effective communication and assign a relative weight to each of these elements. This is a session that any businessperson needs to hear. We also talk to Chris Adams, Global CEO and Executive Director of online video streaming syndication company, Spondo. Chris has world-class, groundbreaking credits that go on for pages and pages. So I will just tell you a little bit.
