Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers Our first stop is January, 1944. We're at Central Park. By 1944 Central Park, nearly one-hundred years old, was in the midst of renewal. Parks Commissioner Robert Moses had spent the past decade developing playgrounds, ballfields, handball courts, and other working class elements. In 1943 the restoration of the Harlem Meer was completed. "Please Keep off the Grass" signs, which had once dotted the meadows, were a thing of the past. Why are we in Central Park? Because over on the west coast, on Saturday January 22nd, Bob Hope, Dennis Day, and Joan Leslie appeared in a skit for Command Performance entitled “She Slapped His Face Under The Elevated Because He Only Had A One-Track Mind.” It was set in Central Park. In January of 1944 Bob Hope was radio's top comedian. His own show rating that month was 34.6. More than twenty-six million people were tuning in to hear him each week. Hope spent most of his time entertaining troops. For more info on Bob Hope in 1944, please tune into Breaking Walls episode 148. Five days after D-Day on June 11th, 1944, the park opened Weapons of War: An Exhibit of the Army Service Forces on the Great Lawn. Over the next two weeks, six-hundred thousand people came to see displays contrasting America's War Equipment with that of the Axis. The exhibit was organized by units: The Quartermaster Corps, the Chemical Warfare Service, the Medical Department, the Signal Corps, Ordnance, the Corps of Engineers, and the Transportation Corps. Each hour a flamethrower demonstration was staged for a grandstand which seated twenty-five-hundred people. The expo was in conjunction with the fifth War Bond Drive. #podcast #oldradioshows #oldtimeradio #historypodcast #oldtimeradioshows #editorial #1944 #centralpark #bobhope #joanleslie #dennisday

SEASON 6, EPISODE 18On this weekend's Behind the Mitten Show with Amy Sherman and John Gonzalez -- We are headed back to the island, Mackinac Island that is, and we couldn't be happier. Mackinac Island is one of our state's very special vacation spots, and we take you behind the scenes and all over the island to share all that is new for the 2024 season. We would like to thank Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, and our incredible driver Kaitlyn Mann, for transporting us from West to East, and to all points in between. We felt like royalty driving around in the rain in the wicker wedding carriage! Tune in to our special podcast with Kaitlyn about what it's like to be a carriage driver on the island, why the horses are a big part of her life, and what she loves about living on Mackinac. (LISTEN HERE.)We kick off this week with Steph Castelein from the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau, who gives us an island "overview". We talk about a new development at Arch Rock which will help out weary trekkers, a fun new spot to play some old school video games, plus get updates on remodels that happened all over the island throughout the winter months. One major remodel, that has completely transformed a long-standing favorite, happened out on the West Bluff, at Stonecliffe Inn. Closed for the last two years, the Inn has undergone $40 million dollars in renovations, additions, and improvements. We get to hear all about it from Bethany McCann, the director of sales at the resort. We also got to tour the Inn, and let me tell you, it is totally fantastic. The wallpaper! The tiles! The themed rooms! New restaurants! New pool! New family cottages! It's awesome, and you don't have to stay at the Inn to experience that view from the bluff. We'll tell you just how to do that during this segment. We hopped back into our wedding carriage in a an absolute downpour and headed just a little ways down the road to that big, gorgeous wedding cake looking out over the straits, the Grand Hotel. The property was just awakening from it's winter work, and it's always fun to see what transformations have taken place. Our interview with Jeff Hess, senior VP of operations at the hotel, confirms that the new ownership team is just as in love with this beauty as Michigan is. We talk about some of the historically accurate renovations they've been working on, and ways to visit the Grand even if you aren't an overnight guest. Finally, it was back out in the rain (thankfully cozy warm under the extra blankets Katelyn provided) and headed back down to Main Street and out to East Bluff, where you are greeted by the incredible Great Lawn at Mission Point Resort. The Ware family took a big leap of faith when they purchased the resort in 2014, but Liz and her brother Mark, along with support from their father Denny, had a vision and weren't afraid of hard work. Together, they've transformed the resort into a world-class destination. This summer, look for updated menus with delicious new items from Chef John Clements at both the Round Island Kitchen and at the very lovely Chianti. Insider tip: DO NOT MISS his pimento cheese dip. We also talk about the exciting new musical show that Mission Point is hosting all summer long at the Mission Point Theater. The McCartney Years is an international touring act featuring the music of the Beatles, Wings and Sir Paul, all brought stunningly to life by Yuri Pool, who will transform and perform each Wednesday through Sunday all season. This historically accurate show sounds incredible, and something totally new to enjoy with friends of all ages this summer.Where are we going to be next week? We don't know. But tune in to find out.Follow John and Amy:Website: amyandgonzo.comFacebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitterX at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

Exploring Central Park should be on your NYC bucket list. In this article, we're gonna simplify the best ways to get around Central Park so you can see all the sights efficiently. Pedicabs/Horse-Drawn Carriage On Central Park's website: pedicab tours are $150/hr and this is the discounted price. Usually cost $3-7 per minute. I've seen as high as $10/min. This is so expensive and no one on these tours ever looks like they are actually enjoying it. You'll miss most of the most famous spots just because the pedicabs can't go to the best places. Horse-drawn carriage on Central Park's website-$120 for a 30 min ride. $160 for 45 min ride. This does not include tip! Walk up prices will be much more expensive. Bike/Scooter Rental Bike rentals as low as $11/hr/person. Scooter rental is around $20-25/hr/person. Citi Bike: Day pass for $19/day. Free unlocks + 30 minute of free riding on a standard bike or $0.30/minute on an eBike Normal unlock: $4.79 for 30 minutes on a standard bike or $0.30/minute on an eBike Rollerblading or Skateboarding Rollerblade rental- $25 for 24-hour rental. Comes with helmet and pads. Would not recommend this option unless you are a very good rollerblader. The central park roads are sometimes uneven and the loop can get crowded. Would be fun if you are good but could easily be miserable if you are a novice. Skateboarding-- Same deal. You should be good at this. Probably best if you already live here and have one. While many visitors flock to Central Park, only a handful truly delve into the rich past and hidden gems of the 840-acre park! Whether you have half an hour or an entire day to spare, the park's sheer expanse offers something for everyone. But how do you learn about these landmarks as you explore?! Enter the Central Park Audio Guides which provide interesting audio readings of 40+ places in Central Park. In this episode, we'll dive into how to use the free audio guides, where to find them, and even give you a preview of what the audio guides sound like. While you can certainly book guided tours of Central Park, those cost money & require you to be there at a certain time and for a certain amount of time. If you're more of a DIY explorer and like to go at your own pace, the Central Park Audio Guides are for you! These guides offer historical information, fun facts, and little-known tidbits of info about 40+ landmarks. Each audio guide is available in English, Spanish, French, and ASL. For most locations, the audio snippets range anywhere from 90 seconds up to about 4 1/2 minutes. Here are the 2 ways you can use the Central Park Audio Guides. ⏬ Option 1: Phone Call Call the phone number listed on the sign near the location Enter the “extension number” listed on the sign Listen to the audio (preferably with headphones) If you want to save it in your contacts, here's the Central Park Audio Guide phone number: 646-862-0997 The main disadvantage of the phone call route is that you have to find the extension on the sign in the park. Option 2: Bloomberg Connects App Option 2 is to download the Bloomberg Connects app and find the Central Park Audio Guide there. The advantage of the app is that you can search for locations/landmarks without being right next to them. That makes it easy to learn about sections of the park before (or after) you check them out. Operator. Investor. Educator. No matter the role, Matt Higgins has always believed in trusting his instincts and never outsourcing his judgment. Higgins grew up in Queens, New York hawking flowers on street corners and scraping gum under tables at McDonald's to help feed his family. On a mission to escape poverty as fast as possible and provide for his home-bound mother, he dropped out of high school, took his GED and enrolled in college at 16 – eventually earning his juris doctorate from Fordham Law at night while working full-time. A decade after dropping out of high school, Higgins was appointed the youngest Mayor's press secretary in NYC history at 26, managing the global media response during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks under Rudy Guiliani. He then became one of the first employees – and ultimately Chief Operating Officer – of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, created to rebuild the World Trade Center site. Higgins helped organize the largest international design competition in history culminating in Reflecting Absence, the September 11th National Memorial, and the development of the 1,776-feet-tall One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the northern hemisphere. Higgins has deep experience in sports, having spent 15 years in senior leadership positions with National Football League teams. Higgins cofounded New York City-based RSE Ventures in 2012 alongside developer Stephen M. Ross, amassing a multi-billion-dollar investment portfolio of leading brands across sports and entertainment, media and marketing, food and lifestyle, and technology industries. NYC's Magnolia Bakery is one of the latest additions to a portfolio that includes David Chang's renowned culinary brand, Momofuku, and Australian-inspired hospitality/lifestyle brand, Bluestone Lane. RSE has successfully backed many challenger brands from inception, including RESY, an Open Table competitor that American Express acquired in 2019; the Drone Racing League, which was named among Fast Company's 10 Most Innovative Sports Companies; and Relevent Sports, the leading international soccer agency in the US. Higgins was the first client and ultimately only partner in VaynerMedia, the largest socialmedia first agency in the world founded by Gary Vaynerchuk. Higgins is a prolific investor in the direct-to-consumer space, having invested in over 100 DTC brands throughout his career. He is a lecturer and Executive Fellow at Harvard Business School, where he teaches the popular course Moving Beyond DTC alongside HBS Professor Len Schlesinger. Each year, the course features real-world case studies on some of the top consumer brands in the US. Higgins' reputation as a self-made serial entrepreneur earned him a spot as a recurring guest Shark on the Emmy award-winning TV show Shark Tank during seasons 10 and 11. He will soon star in a new spinoff also executive produced by Mark Burnett. In 2019, he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, joining the ranks of seven former US presidents, Nobel Prize winners and other leaders for work to improve society. He is also a longstanding board member of Autism Speaks, advocating for scientific research and greater acceptance of neurodiversity. In 2021, Higgins had a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican to discuss human rights and solidarity with the world's poor. The Concert in Central Park is the first live album by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, released on February 16, 1982, by Warner Bros. Records. It was recorded on September 19, 1981, at a free benefit concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park, New York City, where the pair performed in front of an audience reported at the time as 500,000 people. Later estimates determined that the maximum number of people who could fit in the park space was 48,500. A film of the event was shown on TV and released on video. Proceeds went toward the redevelopment and maintenance of the park, which had deteriorated due to lack of municipal funding. The concert and album marked the start of a three-year reunion of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Welcome to Deeper Cuts: The Live Sessions – a three-episode miniseries which finds the Deeper Cuts trio looking at the live music albums that were meaningful to them, and pondering what makes a great live album. After exploring a theater and a concert hall as a setting for great live records, this time we consider the large-scale outdoor live show. To illustrate this context best, Shannon showcases a go-to live album for her – Paul Simon's 1991 live offering, Concert in the Park. For Shannon, it was a high school record; a put-it-on-in-the-car-and-drive-anywhere record. It meant freedom, adventure, and was a taste of the independence she would find later on when she made the setting of this record, New York, her adopted home. But how did this work for the Deeper Cuts trio? What did we think of an album that covers so much ground across a mighty discography? How do the songs translate on such a large scale? Can they emerge from the shadow of not only their original recorded versions but Simon and Garfunkel's Central Park Concert from a decade earlier? And how does it figure in the life of the artist, known as a purveyor of folk music across the decades? And, as always, what were the highlights and lowlights of this release? Reserve your spot on the Great Lawn, spread the blanket, and join us for this final installment of our Live Sessions miniseries of Deeper Cuts. Our Spotify Playlist covers each episode of this miniseries. And don't forget to talk to us on Twitter (@deepercutscast) and to rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts!

His aim was to tour North American poetry venues for two years. He did not stop. Wakefield, who isn't concerned with what poetry is or is not, delivers raw, rounded, disarming performances of humor and heart. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The time to start feeding the grass is early in the spring so that it will be really healthy by the time it gets really hot. First, consider using an organic fertilizer to boost growth rather than a chemical mix. These products reduce the possibility of “burning” the grass and they don't have to be watered after application. Regardless of the product you use, you can end up with “stripes” across the lawn if you don't make careful passes with the fertilizer applicator. Try laying out markers at each end of the yard which are spaced at about the width of your spreader. 107 days.Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome. Maybe I've found a few more freedoms but lost my mind. I dunno. I never thought I would say this, but there actually a few things I'm going to miss about lockdown life.I only considered it last weekend, on what it transpired was my last lockdown picnic. Saturday was a glorious, warm summer night in Auckland. A whisper of a cool evening breeze. It was the sort of temperature where it's so perfect you don't think about the temperature. It doesn't cross your mind. The park was chocka'. Everywhere, families and groups of mates had laid out their picnic mats to lounge and laugh and graze and sip wine in the fading light. The grass was soft. Kids were playing. Birds were squabbling in the twilight. It was bliss.‘Why don't we always do this?' asked my mate.I reckon. Picnics were one of the few great pleasures of lockdown. I know it wasn't just me. Every evening I passed the park, it was close to standing room only. It actually reminded me of the Great Lawn in New York's Central Park. In a city where most people live in tiny apartments, it's normal to organise an outdoor picnic with your mates. As we learnt in Auckland this year, people will use good public spaces.I'm gonna miss riding my bike in lockdown. What a joy to race around the city with only half the usual traffic. Only half the usual reasons to be scared for your life. Apparently global bike sales have gone bananas during the pandemic. I looked at buying a bike from the U.K until I realised that because of demand, I'd be waiting almost a year for it to arrive. As I discovered in lockdown, there are a few simpler ways to deal with the stresses of the pandemic than by heading outside for a quick blat up Auckland's volcanoes, the elements on your face. What else will I miss about lockdown? I'll miss the flexibility of working in my pyjamas. I'll miss having an easy excuse not to hit the gym. I'll miss feeling a tiny bit excited about a trip to the supermarket... Countdown?! Oh, what a treat! The thing I hope I can sustain from lockdown is the way in which the restrictions make you reckon with the things that are important in life, but which we sometimes take for granted. Friends. Family. Job security. The local cafe that makes our neighbourhood just so. To slot back into pre-lockdown life, exactly as we were, would be a shame.Yep, I'll miss elements of lockdown, but I certainly won't miss lockdown.107 days. Good riddance to that.LISTEN ABOVE

President of Peachtree Residential Alec Rickenbaker joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick for this week's edition of the All About Real Estate segment of the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast. Tune in to hear the trio discuss Peachtree Residential's unique communities filled with urban farmhouse-style homes. An Atlanta native, Rickenbaker has worked in the area as a home builder and landscape architect. With over 30 years in the housing market, Peachtree Residential builds luxury homes throughout Atlanta and Charlotte. Notably called “the builder who listens,” the home building company prides itself on offering a wide array of personalization options to new homeowners. Peachtree Residential provides a design center where homeowners can choose from a variety of selections to customize different features within their new home. “With move-up buyers, they've obviously owned houses before and have learned a lot about what they want and what they don't want. With our pretty wide array of plans and options that we offer folks, they can really personalize what they do,” said Rickenbaker. Many contemporary homes from Peachtree Residential offer the urban farmhouse aesthetic which has risen in popularity. From brick water tables to board and batten siding and inviting porches, the builder's homes offer a relaxed yet stylish look by implementing thoughtful features in their design. Currently, the builder offers unique new homes in several new communities. Waterside at River Glen, a new community located within the existing River Glen neighborhood off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Suwanee, Georgia. Now preselling, this Gwinnett County community offers 22 incredible homesites, including 17 homes with direct access to the Chattahoochee River. Garden Park is a 28-lot gated neighborhood in the highly-rated West Forsyth High School District. Placed in a beautiful location, the single-family homes in this community priced from the low $600,000s feature Peachtree Residential's popular master-on-main floorplans. Ward Mills Farm in West Cobb offers 41 homesites priced from the mid $500,000s to high $600,000s showcasing popular urban farmhouse designs. Located off Lost Mountain Road, the community offers convenient proximity to Lost Mountain Park, The Avenue West Cobb and other West Cobb attractions. Among the builder's Charlotte communities, Blackwood Knoll offers 22 large homesites in the town of Huntersville. Priced in the $700,000s, Blackwood Knoll is an active community that includes a Great Lawn with an open area for outdoor activities. Summit at River Run in Davidson offers unique opportunities including both townhomes and single-family homes. Both South Charlotte neighborhoods, Kristen Lake and Hennigan Place each provide a limited collection of eight to nine beautiful homes priced from the $700,000s. One of the builder's most successful communities, McLean is a master-planned community located in the town of Belmont. With locations in both Atlanta and Charlotte, the Peachtree Design Center boasts talented designers to guide homeowners throughout the home design process. Peachtree Residential has noted current design trends among buyers include simple designs, textured layers, black hardware, light gray or neutral walls, floating shelves and black window mullions among other features. Peachtree Residential offers a variety of design packages to fit the modern design elements buyers are seeking. When building new homes, Peachtree Residential prioritizes placing its new communities in the city's best school districts. The builder focuses on the real estate value and popularity of these districts because families prefer to live in the best school districts. https://youtu.be/-LhjS-AtKy8 To learn more about Peachtree Residential, visit www.PeachtreeResidential.com. Just because you are hiring a lawn company does not mean everything will be perfect and that you do not have to do anything. In this episode we talk about the three main parts to a healthy lawn and the importance the homeowner plays in all of this. To have an amazing lawn you need to feed the lawn and soil, water correctly, and mow correctly. Often I see many people do 1 or 2 of the 3 and expect an amazing lawn. But that's not how it works. These are things you have to watch and inspect each month throughout the entire season.
Top story this week has to be the blackout that hit west Manhattan. Coming 42 years to the day after the 1977 blackout from last week's show, this year's power outage was much less dramatic and lasted only a few hours. ConEd CEO John McAvoy described the failure of both the primary and backup protection systems at a power substation at 64th Street and West End Avenue, leading to power outages once the system was interrupted by a subsequent substation at 49th Street. Although the blackout wasn't caused by a spike in electricity usage, the heat is still on in the city, with daily high temps in the 90s. In response, cooling centers have been opened across the city in senior centers, public housing, and public libraries. On July 18th, Mayor de Blasio signed a local state of emergency that calls on city government buildings and all office buildings over 100 feet tall to conserve energy and set their thermostats no lower than 78°. Temperatures are set to rise and humidity will increase, leading to heat indexes over 100° before rain arrives on July 22nd. You can do your part by turning off your air conditioner when leaving your home and using public transportation instead of driving, which will keep the air quality clear during the heat wave. If you'll be opening your windows to get some ventilation, you can install safety devices called vent locks for sash windows or metal clips for sliding windows that make sure windows can't be forced all the way open from the outside. 5 years ago on July 17, 2014 — Eric Garner dies after being put in a chokehold by NYPD officers 12 years ago on July 18, 2007 — A steam pipe explodes near Grand Central, sending debris flying and disrupting Midtown during evening rush hour 1 year ago on July 19, 2018 — A steam pipe explodes near the Flatiron Building, causing a large crater outside 141 Fifth Avenue Be aware of your surroundings during this time of year, as two of city's steam explosions have happened during just this week in history. New York honored the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team for their fourth World Cup victory with a ticker-tape parade and a presentation at city hall on July 10th where each member of the team received a key to the city. The team has won 48 of its last 50 games played and has now won four of the eight total women's World Cups played. Moving the Fourth of July fireworks back to the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time since 2014 went off without any problems, although it did leave a few flames burning on the bridge after the fireworks were finished. It seemed to be the smoldering remains of the fireworks casings or leftover chemicals and not the infrastructure of the bridge itself. The FDNY fireboats stationed in the East River made quick work of the flames, holding back from using the full force of their water cannons so as not to damage the bridge. This was the 43rd annual Macy's fireworks display. According to data collected by the CDC, July begins the active season for West Nile infections, which are spread via mosquito bites, so now is the time to be prepared and protect yourself from mosquitoes if you will be outside. If you'll be traveling overseas, take special precaution to avoid mosquito bites, and consider a vaccination against diseases that are common in the areas where you will be traveling. If you're staying in the city, you can even do your part by calling 311 with a report of standing water, defined as a place on public or private property where water gathers and remains for more than five days, creating a habitat where mosquitoes may breed. 108 years ago on July 9th, 1911, the New York Times described how a streak of hot weather, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees during the beginning of July 1911, made it difficult to transport ice from insulated storage warehouses to the "Greeks and Italians who have little ice depots in convenient basements", where people found it more convenient than waiting for the ice delivery wagons.
