This week's Ryecast features volcanoes, circuses, and a hasty move to Rye all thanks to Donald Trump. For over thirty years Graham Ellis, who was brought up in East Sussex, lived an idyllic life off grid on Hawaii teaching circus skills. He's been telling Ryecast about his adventures on the volcanic island, and how it all came to an end thanks to the former US President and a decades old cannabis conviction. Deported back to the UK, he's been living in Rye for the past year teaching juggling, giving talks on environmental sustainability, and playing an active part in the Rye Community Garden where he's the compost expert. If you want juggling lessons or advice on sustainable living from Graham, his email is alohajuggler@gmail.com To suggest a story for Ryecast email Ryecastsussex@gmail.com

Beloved, listen." -The Radiance Sutras "When you're on Clearwater Beach what do you need to do in order to be on Clearwater Beach?" - Adapted from a Graham Ellis quote Today's Practice: In the midst of an activity, like beginning to stand up, or mid-stride, stop abruptly (think of it like that old school game, 'Red Light, Green Light'!) and see what you feel in the body. You'll notice stillness... Silence. The mind falls quiet, and the quiet is LOUD. Like a big pause. Feel Love in that Silence. Know Love as the Silence. Recognize that this Loving Silence is always, already the case. You are always in It. You are always walking through It. It is seemingly appearing as you, as me, as everything. Stay in this knowing. Stay (t)here in the Silence. "Stop leaving and you'll arrive." - Lao Tzu Book Recommendations:Frank Kinslow's 'The Secret of Quantum Living'Lorin Roche's 'The Radiance Sutras'

Has society lost sight of sustainable living in the name of progress? Jamaicans lose sight of coconuts growing above their heads as diseases of modernization take hold of their population. At the same time, Americans vilify every real food leaving them completely at the mercy of food producers while we watch heart disease, cancer and new diseases skyrocket. Is there a way to re-capture our dietary choices of yesteryear? Guest heretic, Graham Ellis of Pono Solutions Consulting, and president of the Hawaii Sustainable Community Alliance describes how his childhood growing up in England not all that long ago is so different from the world we live in today. His family did quite well eating fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and milk that were not only local, but delivered right to their door on a regular basis. Boy, how things have changed! The commoditization of food has not only devastated our topsoil, but has raped local economies and deprived people of vibrant health. What can be done to move back to a sustainable society? Is it possible? What can you take to move towards this goal? Listen in as Graham tells us what we can do to recapture our dietary traditions and have a bountiful supply of delicious foods should the supply lines go down. You'll also learn about his USDA issued grant to help develop sustainability here in Hawaii.

Whatever happened to biofuels? They were seen as the replacement for fossil fuels until it was realised they were being grown on land that should have been used for food crops. But now there is serious research into new ways of producing biofuels, from waste materials, from algae and from bacteria. Gaia Vince takes to the water of Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland where Professor Matthew Dring and Dr Karen Mooney from Queens University, Belfast, are experimenting in growing algae that could be turned into fuel. She visits Professor Alison Smith's algae lab at Cambridge University. Graham Ellis from Solazyme in California explains how his company has already made fuel from algae that has been sold at the pumps and powered a plane, in a mixture with conventional fuel. And Professor Nick Turner at Manchester University and Professor John Love at Exeter University talk about how they are manipulating bacteria to make diesel.
