Throughout June we'll be highlighting thalassophobia and the fear of deep waters. This week the fiends Totemlydrunk and Grindhouse Zombie are going underwater, or rather, we're getting pulled into it. We're covering a film that has spent nearly 50 years being dismissed as a Jaws knockoff and deserves considerably better than that. Orca: The Killer Whale is not a film about a shark. It is a film about grief, vendetta, and the specific kind of reckoning that arrives when you destroy something that was capable of loving what you destroyed. After a life-shattering tragedy, Trish (Mel Jarnson) tries to comfort her best friend, Maddie (Virginia Gardner), by taking her on a spectacular adventure to a private lagoon halfway across the world. Part 2: Twenty Years of Action: What We've Tried, What it Cost, and What it Changed In this second episode of our multi-part series on Southern Resident killer whales, we take a look at the last twenty years of effort that has included new vessel regulations, salmon habitat restoration, contaminant monitoring, and the formation of a high-profile task force. Hundreds of millions to billions of dollars have been invested since NOAA first published the SRKW recovery plan. On this episode we discuss what we have actually done in the twenty years since the SRKWs were listed on the endangered species list, and what has it changed? In the second installment of Febwhaleary, we leave behind the fun loving world of Free Willy and venture to the cold climate of Newfoundland to witness the dark side of nature. For not all Orcas share the same sense of fun and need for human companionship like Willy, some…can hold a grudge. For Killer Whales the need for vengeance can be just as strong in Orcas as it can with homosapiens, as one fisherman in the 1970's found out. With rows of razor sharp teeth, designed to tear apart their prey, along with an extensive knowledge of explosives and natural accelerants; one does not wish to be on the bad side of this deadly mammal. For when one fucks around with nature…nature has a way of fucking you back. This…is Orca.I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we prepare to serve up a cold plate of vengeance are fellow cinephiles and marine biologists, Mike, Jackie, and Ryan.Topics of discussion in this episode include a breakdown of one of the most haunting and traumatic scenes we've ever witnessed on the show to date; Dino De Laurentiis thumbs his nose at Spielberg as he gives us one ocean hell-beast to rule them all; and finally, we analyze the Final Destination-esque methods that the Killer Whale in Orca uses to obtain his vengeance.Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, Follow Us on Instagram, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.comAnd thus concludes our dive into the vengeful side of the Killer Whale. Febwhaleary will continue next week, as we warp back to the future to save the Humpback Whale species with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. And yes, we promise, there will be whales here!

Hello, and welcome to Apocalypse Video's look at the gentle giants of the sea: Whales. All month long, we'll be discussing everything from Orcas, to Humpback Whales, as well as a special once in a lifetime look at one of the rarest whale species on the planet. This…is Febwhaleary. In this first installment, we will be covering perhaps the most popular whale in the public consciousness: the Orca - otherwise known as the Killer whale. But not all Orcas behave like their infamous moniker, some are gentle giants, case in point, tonight's subject: Willy. A performer for years before his eventual debut in Hollywood, Willy is perhaps the most popular killer whale in the world. Although his true life story is not as hopeful as his motion picture alter ego…I'm your host, Dave, and joining me on this quest to stop a power-mad Michael Ironside are fellow cinephiles and Willy fans, Mike and Ryan.Topics of discussion in this episode include the depressing story of Keiko (aka: Willy), and why it's never a good idea to turn a Killer Whale into a Golden Retriever; we'll also talk about whether Michael Madsen and Michael Ironside are too menacing in this movie or not menacing enough; and finally, we'll get into Ryan's childhood obsession with whales and how he may have gone down a different path in life had he lived closer to a Seaworld.Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.comAnd thus concludes our look at Free Willy. Febwhaleary will continue next week, as we take a look at a whale that more embodies the ominous nature of its “killer” moniker: next week we watch the 1977 creature thriller…Orca.

Part 1: How We Got Here In this first episode of our multi-part series on Southern Resident killer whales, we step back to look at the full historical arc — from the pre-capture population, through the capture era, to the endangered listing that shapes recovery efforts happening today. This episode sets the foundation for the entire series. Before we can talk about recovery strategies and efforts, we need to understand how the Southern Resident killer whales became endangered in the first place. We discuss what we know about the pre-capture population, the capture era and its lasting impacts, recovery and then decline, risk factors and the endangered species listing. Coming up in Part 2 we will dig into actions that have been taken over the last 20 years since the endangered species listing, how much it has cost and the results (or lack of) for Southern Resident recovery. Returning guest Jared Towers from Bay Cetology joins us on this episode of After the Breach Podcast to discuss a paper he co-authored in the Journal of Comparative Psychology, "Testing the Waters: Attempts by Wild Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) to Provision People (Homo sapiens)." Before getting into the paper, we talk a bit about the recent release of the updated Bigg's killer whale identification catalog! This is the first updated catalog since 2019 and hosts Sara and Jeff talk with Jared about the release. We move into the discussion about Jared's paper, which made international media when it was published earlier this year. What does it mean to provision people? What populations of killer whales are doing this? Why might they be doing this, what are possible motivations? What types of prey are they sharing? We discuss these questions and more with Jared, and we all share some examples of this from of our own experiences on the water with killer whales. If you are enjoying listening to our podcast, please share this with your friends, follow/subscribe, and leave us feedback/reviews wherever you listen to podcasts! And if you'd like to join Jeff and Sara on a whale watching tour in 2026, please check out to Maya's Legacy Whale Watching to book! You can also find us on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube. Please send us feedback or questions at afterthebreachpodcast@gmail.com. And remember, stay safe out there. Orcas vs Great White Sharks is more than a dramatic headline—it's a sign of how ocean ecosystems are shifting before our eyes. New drone footage shows orcas in the Gulf of California attacking and killing juvenile great white sharks in what scientists believe are nursery zones. The footage, captured in 2020 and 2022, reveals orcas flipping young sharks onto their backs, inducing tonic immobility, and surgically removing their livers—a precise and efficient hunting technique that may reshape predator-prey dynamics. For years, scientists have known about great white shark nurseries, but what defines a "true nursery" has always been debated. These new observations raise deeper questions: Are orcas expanding their hunting grounds, or are juvenile sharks moving into new, warmer waters due to climate change? If orcas continue targeting young sharks, could this affect the recovery and stability of great white populations across the Pacific? In this episode, Andrew explores the science, the controversy, and what these interactions mean for the future of ocean conservation. Originally released July 23, 2024. New Kindred episodes will drop starting in October 2025.In this week's episode, we travel to Denmark and speak with author and long time marine biologist Hanne Strager about the incredible and dynamic predator the killer whale, or orca if you prefer.Hanne specializes in marine wildlife, specifically killer whales, and has recently published her new book titled, The Killer Whale Journals: Our Love and Fear of Orcas. We wanted to speak with Hanne because we are keenly interested in the relationship humans have with predators and why killer whales have long been persecuted, misunderstood, and even demonised by humans, like MANY predators whether that be on land or sea. We think they are dynamic, highly intelligent, gorgeous, and captivating animals and Hanne tells us why! What an absolute honor to speak with Hanne. We steeped in her knowledge and experience and mostly her poignant insights on not only killer whales but also her view of the relationship we have with animals like killer whales and other powerful and intelligent predators. Also, take a listen to this week's introduction to the episode and weigh in on whether my “joke” about killer whales is actually a joke, a riddle, or just a question! Jenn is most definitely unsure! Susie learned about a shocking situation developing at a French aquarium housing killer whales where animal rights activists caught the trainers, um, handling the whales to alleviate adult desires brewing between the whales. We hear why it's happening, and why it's so upsetting (beyond the obvious). We discuss the situation between 74yo former NFL coach Bill Bellichek and his 24yo girlfriend, why we can't decide who the villain is, and why it's flipping the script of May/December romances. We learn the story of the Great British Bakeoff, why they take casting so seriously, and why the bakers hold disdain for a particular type of cast member. Susie talks about the lawsuit against airlines who charge people for windowless window seats on flights, and why we think it'll shake up the industry. We learn why many adults are ordering kids meals and why Sarah won't do it. And we discuss whether it is important to be able to read an analog clock and write cursive, and why learning handwriting is about far more than it seems.Brain Candy Podcast Presents: Susie & Sarah's SpOoOoOoOoktacular Spectacle, October 30, Oriental Theater, Denver, Colorado: Get your tickets!
