(00:00-26:30) Couple of instant classics in the NFL Divisional round. Caleb Williams with an all-timer to tie the game late last night. Should they have gone for two after the touchdown pass? The Bears' Pujols/Brad Lidge moment. Quarterback critique from gooey butter cake. Ref show at the end of the Bills and Broncos game. Catch or INT? Sean McDermott didn't hold back post game. An emotional Josh Allen after the game felt like he let his teammates down. An uninteresting final four. How pissed do you think Allen Craig is?(26:39-57:30) Missouri in Baton Rouge, the Blues in Edmonton, the Cardinals Winter Warm Up....that's all. Nevin Shapiro has quite the dramatic prediction for tonight's National Championship game. Play big or go home. Cignetti and Cristobal have a moment when asked what a national title would mean to their school. How will the Tamm Avenue Capital Partners play tonight's game? Ballwin Beer Bitch is leading us off on the phone lines. Tim inspired the Billikens. The baby race. Cuban sandwiches and Heated Rivalry. Where will SLU be in the new rankings?(57:40-1:09:40) They're fired up in Bloomington. Joe Buck catching hell for his Lambert Airport tweet. Dirty ghost town. #371 - We Are Nick Thompson Decoding the Simplicity of Running and Unraveling His Enigmatic Father

Send us a textMany of us have complicated relationships with our parents and then wonder how much of our inherited traits we are passing to our own children; it's left up to us whether to nurture and grow those traits, or to discard them entirely. In his new book, “The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of Sports,” Nick Thompson describes how his dad one day taking him to watch the New York City Marathon led him to a lifelong love of running. Nick, the CEO of the nationally renowned publication The Atlantic, and his dad followed similar paths through New England prep school and then Stanford, and both pursued running to varying degrees, but there their paths diverged. His dad's life devolved from being a Rhodes Scholar and working inside the Reagan administration to a baffling, hedonistic life overseas. All the while, Nick's journalistic career blossomed and he became the Editor-in-Chief of Wired magazine, and running became an anchor of stability. He consistently cranked out speedy marathons in the 2:40s, sandwiched around his own serious health scare. Then an opportunity to train under Nike coaches led him to breakthrough marathon times and a greater awareness of his importance as a husband and father. “The Running Ground” also includes stories about pioneers such as Bobbi Gibb, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, and Suprabha Beckjord, a multiple-time winner of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon, a 3100-mile race run on a half-mile concrete sidewalk loop in Queens, New York. Nick has now ventured into the ultramarathon world, including breaking the previous 50K American 45-49 age group record previously held by the legendary Mike Wardian, running a 3:04:36. “The Running Ground” is a riveting read that deeply explores as only a career journalist can the complexities of why we run – the joys as well as the challenges and frustrations – and exploring that part of our life cycle that includes unraveling the mysteries about our parents. You can order both print and audiobook versions on Amazon. I also highly recommend subscribing to The Atlantic if you, like I do, want to read great in-depth reporting about the people and events that are shaping this world.Nick Thompsonnickthompson.comtheatlantic.comInstagram @nxthompson“The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of Sports" is available on AmazonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signupSubscribe to our Substack for my archive of articles of coaching tips developed from my more than three decades of experience, wild and funny stories from my long coaching career, the wit and wisdom of David, and highlights of some of the best WASP episodes from the past that I feel are worthwhile giving another listen.Search either We Are Superman Podcast or @billstahl8Register for the American Heroes Run: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=133138

Send us a textYour gut has tried to warn you before. That flicker when someone lingers by a bathroom door, shadows you to the elevator, or blocks your path with a smile and a prop—it's not paranoia, it's a baseline breaking. We dig into a practical method for spotting a cunning opponent early, whether it's a low-level hustler at the pump or a higher-stakes actor at a major event. The mechanics of deception don't change; only the stakes do.We start by stripping away the jargon and defining terms that keep you clear-headed. Opponent isn't “enemy”; it's anyone competing for advantage in a shared environment. From there, we map the four recurring tools that reveal intent: access, blending, manipulation, and timing. You'll learn how bad actors create closeness, hide in plain sight with props and roles, steer your attention, and pick their moment. Then we teach BASE—Baseline, Anomaly, Simplest explanation, Experiment—a concise loop you can run in real time to test what you think you're seeing without overreacting. You'll hear concrete examples from gas stations, hotels, tourist piers, and event lines, plus how to communicate what matters with short, useful language that prompts action. We walk through MLCOA versus MDCOA to balance likely and dangerous interpretations, then show low-calorie experiments—changing angle, reversing course, quick contact, second set of eyes—that force a reaction and buy time and distance. If you can catch a shoplifter's access play, you can disrupt a more serious plan using the same cues. This is situational awareness you can practice today: clean, repeatable, and calm under pressure. If this helped sharpen your instincts, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review. The Simplest (But Scariest) Way to Make MoneyThe simplest way to make money in your business is also the one most people avoid.I see it all the time: incredibly smart, capable professionals who know they have something valuable to offer… but keep telling themselves they need more clarity before they can start selling. So they plan. They overthink. They try to design the perfect offer before ever talking to a real person. It feels responsible. It feels safe. But it's quietly delaying their income — and eroding their confidence. In this episode, I'm breaking down the four traps that keep talented people from making money now — and showing you the three-step process for getting paid while you're still getting clear.Because here's the truth most people get wrong: You don't get clear before you get paid. You get clear in the process of getting paid.I walk you through:Why “waiting until you're ready” is costing you revenueThe 4 traps that keep people stuck in planning modeWhat to sell when you don't think you have an offerWho to sell to when you don't think you have an audienceWhy simplicity beats strategy at the startThe exact skills you actually need to land clients (and the ones you don't)This is the same approach I used to start my business — and the same one I teach clients who want to stop delaying and start getting paid without burning themselves out. When you get this right, everything changes:Conversations turn into opportunitiesOpportunities turn into clientsClients turn into income — quickly and naturallyIt's so much simpler than you think. And you can start right now._____Royalty Free Music from Tunetank.com Track: Urban Legend by Musical Bakery https://tunetank.com/track/3362-urban-legend/

Nicholas Thompson has long been known for his sharp and inquisitive mind as the former editor and chief of “Wired,” CEO of “The Atlantic,” and a writer who moves fluently between technology, culture, and the human stories that animate both. In his new memoir “The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of Sports” Thompson turns inward exploring the most enduring relationship of all, the one between a parent and a child. The book traces his deepening bond with his son through running, the sport that Thompson has loved his entire life and the way the miles on the road become a space for connection, conversation, and growth.

In this episode we talk a lot about running. But I want to expand it to all of you who spend a good amount of time outside in the elements. This isn't a discussion to should on anyone, but just to share the value we've found in going outside, year around, braving the elements and the discomforts of our own bodies. What we gain, what we learn. So if you ride a bike, hike, swim, even walk, I think you'll resonate with this discussion and possibly expand your joy in getting outside. My guest is Nicholas Thompson, well known as CEO of The Atlantic, an American magazine founded in 1857, which earned the top honor for magazines, General Excellence, at the National Magazine Awards in both 2022 and 2023. I've had multiple writers for The Atlantic on this podcast, such as Arthur Brooks and Charles Duhigg, both of whom have appeared here twice. Before joining The Atlantic, Nick was the editor-in-chief of Wired magazine and a contributor for CBS News. Nick has long been a competitive runner and in 2021, he set the American record for men 45+ in the 50K race. Nick just came out with a new book, The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of Sports. In it, Nick shares his relationship with running, pushing himself, overcoming a challenging father, the death of his father, his own bout with cancer, dealing with obsessions, and why in the hiring process he looks for people's ability to suffer for an end goal. I took the opportunity to commiserate with Nicholas on the joys of our devotion to going outside pretty much every day, to exert ourselves, and how the effort gives us a different experience of life. I think more so in today's culture than ever where we tend to both stay inside more, and avoid any discomforts more. Again, I think those of you who do such things will find this talk confirming, and for those of you who don't, I hope it will give more breadth to your thoughts about getting out and getting your heart rate up. Few people embody the intersection of endurance and intellect quite like Nicholas Thompson. He's a runner, writer, and CEO of The Atlantic, and in his new book, The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of Sports, Thompson explores how running has shaped his resilience, his leadership, and his pursuit of meaning in a relentless world. It's a story of motion–literal and metaphorical–from chasing split times on the road to navigating the fast-evolving media landscape.A lifelong competitor, Nicholas has defied convention by getting faster with age. At 44, he ran a blistering 2:29:12 marathon in Chicago; at 46, he set the American 45–49 age-group record in the 50K (3:04:36); and in April 2025, at 50, he won the Lake Waramaug 50-Mile in 5:43:08. His regular "run commutes" through New York and obsession with sleep have become trademarks of his disciplined, data-guided approach; one that keeps him thriving as both an athlete and executive. As CEO of The Atlantic since 2021, Thompson has led the publication into a new era of growth, championing thoughtful journalism amid a fractured digital age. But behind the boardroom and the headlines is a runner who sees training as a mirror for leadership–patience, discomfort, and long-term vision. He's here to reflect on the lessons behind The Running Ground:how running taught him to manage pain and purpose, how endurance builds empathy, and why mastering the miles has made him a better human. Whether you're chasing a PR or perspective, his story is a testament to running not just as a sport, but as a way of thinking–and living–in motion.Tap into the Nicholas Thompson Special.  If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it. Comment the word "PODCAST" below and I'll DM you a link to listen. If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend!S H O W  N O T E S-The Run Down By The Running Effect (our new newsletter!): https://tinyurl.com/mr36s9rs-Our Website: https://therunningeffect.run -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ-My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en-Take our podcast survey: https://tinyurl.com/3ua62ffz

In other words, they aren't generating the volume of leads required to sell.As I've already covered, this isn't getting easier in the current environment – it's getting harder. The problem is two-fold – the leads are harder to get, and once you have them it's harder to sell to them. Most founders try to solve the problem in one of two ways:Chase more leads: Makes sense on the surface of it, right? If you don't have enough leads, you should look for ways to get more. And so, they do. They start posting on new social platforms, running more ads, trying out different lead magnets... and most of the time, hitting up against their tipping point when they do.Create more offers: Faced with a shortfall in revenue, they decide to build out new offers to serve the people they already have in their audience. Revenue-wise, it works great. Time and energy-wise, it stacks their calendar with more creation and more things to deliver on, and they end up working more than ever. Here's the problem:Both solutions require MORE AND BIGGER to achieve the same endgame. If your goal is the $400k sweet spot, I have a different approach for you and I'm walking through what it is in today's podcast episode. Mentioned in this Episode: Get a Ticket for the $400k Profit Plan Workshop (to be held 24 November): https://www.lifestylebusinessschool.co/tyis8awr Get the Online Business Model Map I Recommend for 2026: https://lifestylebusiness.school/profit-plan-lm-1Want more? Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was recently at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. Save 10% with code STRENGTHRUN10 at checkout at moboboard.com. Thanks to The Performance Training Journal! The Performance Training Journal is now available on Amazon and debuted as the #4 new release in the running category. Since I started running in 1998, I've kept a hardcopy training journal. Holding a tangible log, writing in it daily, and reflecting on the ups and downs of running is a surefire way to improve. This hardcopy training journal helps you focus on the training metrics that matter, prioritizes a long-term outlook so you don't take any shortcuts, and maintains your motivation with strategic self-praise. With a no-frills, functional design, the Performance Training Journal includes coaching advice on racing, injury prevention, strength training, and more. It will guide you through race scheduling, how to plan your race morning, the best workouts for endurance runners, and encourage you to track your personal bests over time. You have the space to make this journal your own whether you're a new runner or a professional, a trail or road runner, or a mid-distance specialist or ultra marathoner.⁣ So don't just track your running, learn from it with the Performance Training Journal! Check it out today on Amazon. Thank you Gut & Green! Previnex's new Gut & Green Superfoods powder is my new go-to. It has organic barley and oat grass, alfalfa, spirulina, chlorella, kale and broccoli… and that's it. Their ingredients are backed by clinical data and contain three specific gut fibers that help promote GI health, digestion, reduced inflammation, and a better microbiome. And it has twice of the fiber of my last greens mix - something I'm trying to work on. I don't always eat as many whole foods as I should, so G&G gives me more peace of Mind. Plus, the flavor actually tastes good. I don't have to choke it down so I enjoy drinking it! Try it for yourself here at previnex.com and be sure to use code "JASONGREENS" to save 15% off your first order. Don't tell anyone, but if you put Gut & Green Superfoods powder in your cart, then the 15% off discount will work for anything else you add into your cart as well. Thanks Gut & Green!
